Nara Sushi was a pleasant surprise on a drive through Folsom. We were looking for a late lunch and decided to give it a try. Since it wasn't very busy when we arrived, we were seated right away. The dining room is fairly large, with a mix of tables, booths, and counter seating. Each table has a tablet for electronic ordering, but we decided to go old-fashioned and order through our server. We started with a large hot sake and six pieces of gyoza, asking our server to hold the entrées until we finished. The sake hit the spot and paired nicely with the gyoza. The gyoza tasted good but was just a bit harder than we'd like. For the main meal, I ordered a bento box with nigiri sushi and tempura, while the others chose a salmon teriyaki bento box and a Spicy Yellowtail Roll. My nigiri tasted fresh and nicely prepared. I also tried a piece of the Spicy Yellowtail Roll and found it to have a nice flavor profile. The salmon teriyaki was clean and sweet, with a natural salmon flavor, and was tender and juicy. The portions were generous, making for a satisfying meal, and everyone enjoyed their food, although my companions thought the tempura was a bit too oily. Despite the slightly firm gyoza and oily tempura, the good sake, generous portions, and relaxed atmosphere made for a very enjoyable lunch. Service was prompt and provided feedback for ingredients I was looking for. It was also shared that I could add ingredients if I wanted to special order. Restaurant was clean inside. I believe they have a TV playing sports but I could not view it, okay by me. I liked that I enjoyed the jalapeño roll the way I liked it with an additional ingredient. I dont know how this place has such great reviews.. I ordered and am very unhappy. I ordered edamame that was hot & lightly salted. Miso soup had little to no flavor. 2 rolls that reek of fish (good fish shouldnt smell like fish). The hawaiian volcano roll was ok, the yummy yummy is horrible. Came around noon when they were just opening. There was only one other party dining so service was quick. There's a tablet on the table where you can place your orders. We quickly were served water. We got the dragon roll, spider roll and the popcorn lobster roll. Lots of big unagi pieces on the dragon roll! We also got the calamari tempura and the batter was well done. I used my Uber Eats credit to order pick up from here via Uber Eats app. The entire process was easy and the ready for pick up time was accurate. I ordered the Chirashi (sashimi over sushi rice) and it came with miso soup and a salad. I liked the fish it was pretty good. The whole meal was super filing and I think a great deal for the price. This is our new favorite sushi restaurant, it was a great experience and family friendly! Everyone is very kind and welcoming, and the ambience is very traditional. The interior is focused and intimate, utilizing wood booths and panel walls creating a serene space that is almost ritualistic in a peaceful and unwinding way. The waitress was very Kind to us and the chef was prompt. On top of our orders, the chef brought out carved fruit for our kids twice! Before and after our meals. We thought this was such a great gesture and make the kiddos happy and feel special. The food was great! Love that they have a protein section using no rice to skip the carbs. Their toro was fantastic, and the chef even placed 24k gold flakes on top when he presented the dish. This was a great experience and we cannot wait to return and enjoy another wonderful experience! Came here specifically because I saw someone ordered mulhwe here, so I was super excited to finally try it! As soon as we arrived, we were seated and I asked the server about the mulhwe. She had no idea what I was talking about, so I showed her a picture of the dish that the person I knew had ordered and even the name of the dish written down. She kept saying no and didn't even read or barely look at the photo! It seemed like she just didn't understand me and didn't even care to ask other people around. I am guessing she wasn't the owner because the other person who had been before had described the owners as so friendly and welcoming. It made me so mad that I drove 40 minutes here just for one dish and she couldn't even bother to TRY to help me! I settled on ordering a Poke Roll, and then I saw another younger server came in. I decided to give it another try and asked that girl instead, and she immediately knew what I was talking about and added it to our order without any issues!! I was happy that I got to finally get the dish but very turned off by how the first server treated us. The food came out looking very beautiful despite the otherwise average looking sushi restaurant interior. My mulhwe was delicious - a spicy cold noodle dish with sashimi and tons of fresh veggies. It was very refreshing! I loved the apples/pears inside and the avocado. So many different textures. It was loaded with salmon and tuna and squid. It was a huge portion, I'd recommend getting it for two people to share, with another dish! Otherwise the taste can get a bit tiresome for one person to finish entirely. The poke roll was also very good, loved the fresh fish on top and it was good quality. Even our kids ate their entire meal of teriyaki beef and gyoza! Despite the rocky start I'm glad that we finally got the dish we came here specifically for. We had eyed the menu of this place and were curious to try it. Although it is true that it takes a bit to get served, the staff is great and the food is worth it. We enjoyed the ramen, which was very flavorful and traditional- not great to carried away, but a good solid serving. We tried the tempura as well, and fried dumplings and they were on point. Place seemed clean and had a pleasant decor. The service was quick and friendly. The menu is really "all over the place" including sushi, ramen, bulgogi, tempura etc. They are trying too hard to be the jack of all Japanese foods but fail at the basics on any single item. We ordered the spicy rainbow roll and the combination tempura dinner. Both exhibited the symptoms of lacking flavor and freshness as well as being low on the learning curve for Japanese cuisine. The tempura was over battered and tasted of almost nothing but breading. The rice was hot but way too dry to be eaten. Miso soup was overpowering and simply too salty. The salad lettuce seemed fresh but the salad dressing was weird. The sushi was just bad unfortunately. The fish on top of the roll was mediocre at best. The spicy tuna inside the roll had zero flavor/spice and had the consistency of being in the refrigerator for a long while. The rice also lacked the right consistency or flavor; if it had any seasoned rice vinegar, I couldn't taste it. Sorry, but this place didn't meet our hopes or expectations. read more

I don't like posting bad reviews really and I'm shocked this place has such high ratings. The two people working were super duper nice I will say that, but we didn't have that great of an experience. First off it smelled really weird, like something burnt or leaked and not from food. The salmon on our salmon roll seems like it was about to turn. There was hair in an appetizer, which honestly isn't even a big deal to me but it was coming out of both sides of the jalapeño like it was two hairs and don't get me wrong, they addressed that.. but after I found the two hairs in one plate, I took a better look at the table and found one on another plate. Then on one of our rolls, half of it was good but the other half was really cold almost like that half wasn't Fresh and I don't know how to explain it even when it was plated they were individually apart, so it's almost like part of the role was an old one maybe like a mistake that they made or something then reserved and then the other half was Fresh. I'm not saying they served us old food, but I just found that really odd that there was such a temperature difference on one roll. Service was good like I said they were really nice. I just was really unimpressed with the food and probably wouldn't go back. read more
