I gotta give props to the owners of Nara Sushi for opening up shop during these times. Having dined here last month, I experienced first hand the amazing sushi and skilled cooking from the kitchen chef. They got something special here. Plus the service was good, our waiter was an enthusiastic young man. He was brand new to the job, heck to waitering in general. But he was uncommonly kind and earnest. We ordered 6 piece deep fried gyoza appetizer. We also ordered bowls of white rice, the baked yellowtail collar appetizer, and rainbow sushi roll. We got our bowls of rice and gyozas first. The gyozas wee darn good. Flavorful filling. Fried crispy exterior without the greasy mess. Next the roll was delivered. Mmm. The cuts of fish tasted fresh. Yummers! It was visually gorgeous. Another wait person brought out the potsticker while our waiter brought out the rice. The sushi chef personally delivers us the roll. But hey now, where is the yellowtail collar? I asked our waiter. He goes to check with the sushi chef. The sushi chef goes to work the kitchen. It got lost somehow. So we wait. We ate everything else at this point exist for some rice which I am saving to eat with for the yellowtail. We wait... did I mention we waited. The yellowtail collar (hamachi kama) hits the table. Hello gorgeous. Beautifully cooked, smelling divine. Grilled to a slight crisp edges with the soft filet part being moist and flaky. Topped with slices green onions and sesame seeds. I was not expecting the sesame seeds. Delicious though. It is served with ponzu sauce. The customer service kinks will work itself out. As any new restaurant with a humongous menu as theirs and new staff, they may experience slight hiccups. But the food is delicious and fresh. Our waiter had the best attitude. Wow, I didn't expect such great quality sushi here in Folsom. Restaurant was clean and spacious, service was great and everyone friendly, and the food was delicious. Although I wanted to go for the large special mix sashimi, we settled for tuna and salmon sashimi, pork cutlet dinner, beef teriyaki dinner, and mix tempura. Went in with high hopes due to the many good reviews from this restaurant. We were sat almost immediately and ordered three rolls. The first two come out and we're not entirely impressed, but no immediate red flags. Doesn't taste all that amazing, we were expecting more due to the reviews, but we didn't think anything was wrong. At least not until the third roll came out. Immediately saw the discoloration on the fish, this slimey silvery white strip (featured in the photo below) and immediately told my sister not to eat it and be careful with the other rolls. Tried this sushi place while working close by and overall it was a nice mom and pop place with good sushi and overall good flavor on the rolls. The sushi appeared and tasted fresh and the ambiance felt nice and perhaps maybe even more upscale than I was anticipating but nothing too upscale, just nice. The only negative was the customer service. I sat down at the sushi bar and with only 3 tables in the rest around 1pm, it took about 7 to 8 minutes to get any kind of water or service and it ended being done by the sushi chef as the server was who knows where and the other sushi chef was sitting with what appeared to be his family or friends. I'm all about enjoying family and friends but if this is your restaurant, I think the customer's experience should be top of mind and not your own family. Not a huge deal, but it did somewhat bother me enough to place it on this review. Overall, still a good option for sushi in a nice setting. read more

Ajumeoni (Aunty) always makes sure every customer is satisfied with their meal which makes this restaurant have that home-cooked meal feeling that you do not get from anywhere else. Chef-nim puts so much love and effort in every dish he brings to the table that even my 4 year old daughter craves for the food here! We normally order the following : Toro - you can't go wrong on this one as it is always fresh and delicious! Bento Boxes - we have tried most of the pick two bento boxes and everything tastes delicious and Ahjumma does not skimp! Rolls - Nara Special, Mango Salmon are my two favorites! Tempura - light and not greasy! Tastes authentic! The service here is above and beyond that's why we got hooked. It is run by a family that knows how to treat their customers right. We've been coming here for awhile and have really enjoyed the food but tonight there were some issues. First, we got our rolls before the appetizer showed up. Then the sweet potato in the mixed tempura was old. Not over or under cooked, but dry and tasteless. The rest of the food we ordered was great though. The bigger concern was the new server, Hannah. She refused to pick up any of our dirty plates. They sat there until we left. I saw one customer actually try to hand her his empty bowl and she walked away. It was so bizarre. And so his bowl sat on the corner of the table. When she brought our bill, she sort of did a drive-by dropping it off and thanking us as she was literally walking away. I had to call after her to get a pen. They were not busy, with only 3 tables occupied. I'm not sure if their standards are going down or not. We will try going here again and see. read more

Ordered a rainbow roll and a sweet mango roll with an order Saba nigri. The food came out fairly quickly, the food was well plated. The rolls were appealing looking and showed a touch of flair in how the fish was placed on the top of the rainbow roll. Here is were the bottom fell out of my dining experience. The rolls had no distinct flavors or character, in other words they were surprisedly bland. The cut of Saba was fair but fell flat with it's taste. Would I go back? First time visit and so 4 of 5 stars (leaning toward 5). I decided to go with something simple for a first visit and ordered Sashimi Combo and a Kirin. First thing that was nice was the salad. Nice spring greens with a sesame vinaigrette instead of the normal Japanese mayo sesame. Miso soup was good. The portion of sashimi and the quality were top notch. Especially good was the escolar. Creamy, buttery & delicious. The restaurant is quiet with some elevator-pop music playing. The area is open and feels relaxing. My waitress was very attentive and pleasant. Service was prompt without feeling rushed. I will be back and next trip I intend to push the limits of the chefs. LOL read more

Me and my boyfriend wanted to go out for a nice dinner date together, I was first surprised to see that this place was a ghost town on a Saturday evening. Glancing at the menu everything looked great but a little bit overpriced compared to other spots in the Folsom area. We ordered a spicy California roll and a fried Philly roll with two orders of miso soup. The miso was great, unfortunately I was served a spicy tuna roll instead of the spicy California I ordered, they then realized their mistake, took it back and gave me my spicy California. I couldn't help but notice the server saying to the chef "this is the second time you've done this, served spicy tuna instead of what they ordered". It seems like mix-ups happen often even though there is no rush of customers. There also was no music playing inside the restaurant and it was dead quiet which made it really awkward and difficult to converse and enjoy a date night out, which the server also pointed out to the chef "there's no music playing dude". The sushi was a mess, Cali roll tasted like nothing and there was no "spicy" factor, no flavor at all. Philly roll was okay. It seems like they know they can do better but... aren't?
