This review is long overdue! I've been going to Nargis religiously for about 6 years, ever since they only had one store front with two long tables, and I must say they came a very long way. Nargis is truly my most favorite Uzbeki/Eastern European restaurant I've ever been to, I've tried several in and around NYC, but none compare to the quality, taste and service. The most important thing that makes me come back, is the consistency. The portions are always good, the taste is always delicious and the atmosphere is always alive. I never had any bad surprise eating at Nargis, only good surprise, like when they added green plov and other specialties to the menu, it was my first time trying it, and I enjoyed something new, even more than that I enjoyed something authentic! The meals here are like a journey for me, starting from the salads, to the soups, onto the appetizers, and finally the main event with the kebabs and garlic fries, I arrive at my destination every time! I enjoy bringing my visitors , co-workers, dates and family here for any occasion, not once has anyone complained about the food, they always tell me that they ended up coming back and get me jealous that they went without me. The staff is great too, they're trained properly, very approachable and courteous at all times. BTW, I went to tsob tsob across the street from Nargis, and the food is nowhere close to as good as Nargis, the portions were small and simple stuff like salmon wasn't fresh. I was actually hungry after we left, I told my friends lets stop by nargis for some real kebabs, they thought I was crazy, I told them they're twice as crazy for taking me anywhere but Nargis especially if we're within walking radius. Don't waste your time or money experimenting, just go to Nargis and treat your appetite right! Never really had uzbeck food and it turned our to be a good experience. I will be honest i am not even sure what i was eating but i couldnt stop. Normally if you want great Uzbek cuisine you need to go to Queens but if you're in Brooklyn the best place is Nargiz Cafe without a doubt. Not only their dishes are perfectly prepared with exceptional seasoning and prompt timing but their service is unparalleled. You can tell that the training the staff receives is on point and systemized. We recently had dinner there with 12 people for my mother in laws' bday. She dropped a bday gift, envelop with cash, by accident and left. The waitress found it and gave it to the manager in case we return. She didn't have to, as there would be no way to prove that the envelop was misplaced at the restaurant. Great etiquette and culture among my their staff. Nargis Cafe is Street Meat with a dining room. Crowd sourced hype drove us here. After a huge schlep from the boardwalk we then were hit with a very long wait. Staff was efficient and pleasant and based on a peek at the cyber menu we had high hopes. Started with bread (extra charge) which was akin to stale matzoh and then a couple salads; radish and cuke (best thing we had) and slimy eggplant overloaded with garlic. Then things started to go downhill. The kebabs were cheap but small portions and of the lowest quality street meat. The seasonings are weak, the so called "chicken breast" was actually slimy thigh/skin/fat, the lamb tasted gamy, was full of fat and the beef tasted as though the animal could have pulled a carriage behind it and was recently retired from service in Central Park. Rice, bland cafeteria pilaf, also extra. Do NOT consider this "Cheap Eats" despite what the tourist mags have told ya. The portions are small, every single item is a la carte and the tab, exceeding $36 per person will then have a 10% service charge attached, which they fail to inform you of. The price point winds up at $$$. One more bit of advice. Be sure your trip home doesn't place you too far from toilet access. No kidding here. You're gonna need it. read more

Salad wasn't fresh , beef kebab was very tough and has some weird taste , chicken kebab was just okey , lamb was a bit salty and tough as well . I Have ordered delivery several times and loved the food, so decided to stop in. Just as expected the food was great .......... however the service was strange at best. We ordered apps to share and 3 main dishes. The 2 mains came and the third never arrived. 2 people were done with main course when we began asking wait staff as to what happened to the third main course. Our inquiries were met with lots of confusion but finally about 10 min later the dish arrived .... the WRONG dish. We were offered to wait for the originally ordered dish but the wait would be 20 min. Throughout the entire exchange the waiter mentioned twice that he would have to pay for the incorrectly ordered meal, making us feel very uncomfortable, although it was clearly his error. The water glasses were filled as we originally sat down and refilled after we were done with our meal. We did get one thing comped: tea - 20 oz of hot water and a few tea leaves. The bill arrived with built in 10% "service" charge. I have heard something about restaurants putting the tip into the bill so did not mind paying, HOWEVER then when the credit card slip was printed there was a section for a tip AGAIN (on top of the 10% added to the bill service charge) and that had suggested gratuity from 10% to 20%. Seriously? You want me to leave u more than 30% tip? Its too bad about the service, the food is pretty good :( Follow up after reply from restaurant; Boris, thank you for your reply. I think you may have misunderstood - the original delay was NOT caused by error in order. The main course for one of the diners was not served with the others and ONLY when everyone except that person finished their food and we inquired about the missing dish it was brought out BUT turned out to be the wrong dish. This place is not only 100% hype without substance but also run by some let's just say dishonest people from the greeters, waiters, and the owner. I arrived there today at 10:40 with my kid brother (I did not know that it closed at 11) However, I was told that only the kitchen closes at 11 and that I can stay until 12 as long as we could order in the next 5 minutes or so. Which we did. We were kicked out of the restaurant before being able to finish the meal. Furthermore, the waiter misled me several times regarding the prices (what he said and what was on the check were totally different) I asked for water, which is usually complementary and without telling me that it was extra, brought out bottled water. I love Nargis! their food is amazing, their service is great and its a really nice place. the only negative, Its small, therefore everyone is on top of each other. Thats the only reason I didnt give them 5 starts. They did expend and now they have banquets. There are always people there therefore you will be on top of each other no matter what. This place is definitely one of the best in Brooklyn! I've been ordering delivery from them for quite a while but decided to bring a group of friends to the restaurant after a long day at the beach. None of them had ever had this type of food before but I promised them it would be good. Even though it was a bit of a wait (we had no reservation and 8 people) it was well worth it. Every single dish was delicious and plentiful. We ordered a ton of different things but the real standouts are: Meat Cuchvara- These amazing little meat dumplings served with sour cream which are just out of this world. I could eat them every day. We ordered 3 servings and there were none left by the end of the night. Lamb Kebabs- One of my friends declared it was the most delicious lamb she had ever tasted, and I'd have to agree. The meat was so moist and tender and they definitely do not skimp out on the portions. Pickled Herring- Herring is not my favorite fish but this was delicious. It was cooked perfectly and the accompanying potatoes swimming in butter and dill were outstanding. I could go on and on about the food, but the service deserves mentioning as well. Our waitress was excellent and there is always someone by to get you anything you need. The manager/owner was really nice and welcoming. He came by multiple times to check on our table which made us feel very welcome, especially since none of use spoke Russian and were clearly out of place. My rating for places that claim to specialize in Uzbek/Russian/Central Asian depends on the following factors - the appetizers, the manty, the samsa, and the kebabs. While popular, the food here seems too dietetic to impart the real flavor of the region. The salads are refreshing but not spectacular. Further, I don't think I am alone when I state a strong preference for lamb dishes that are dripping with lamb fat - they way they are SUPPOSED to be prepared. The meat should be juicy and flavorful. Unfortunately, the meat here was uncharacteristically dry and chewy. The plov, which I do not usually purchase as it is very difficult to prepare correctly, was predictably atrocious - dry rice, no flavor, rubbery meat. The saving grace of this establishment are the kebabs and if I had to return, I would easily forego the other dishes and simply order a big stack of kebabs. Fine cuts of meat, juicy, and served with slices of hot fat on the skewer in between the meat. If this place only served kebabs, I'd give it five stars without a second thought. Lastly, I'm not a stickler for service or atmosphere if the food is outstanding. However, this place is packed all the time on the weekends - and I mean PACKED. People are sandwiched in like sardines. The tables are so close together that you are constantly forced to stand up and shuffle around in order to permit the wait staff to sit customers at adjacent tables. Your table will shake. You will be bumped. You will feel rushed. As an aside, I rate Tandoori Food and Bakery in Rego Park, Queens, as the five star standard bearer for Uzbek/Russian cuisine as it should be and I would recommend a genuine comparison of these establishments to anyone interested in this type of cuisine. read more

Just got back from a meal at Nargis and HAD to write a review. First of all, the service was OUTSTANDING. Our waitress Sasha was just excellent. She was warm, friendly, attentive, genuine and helpful. This really made our entire experience wonderful. The rest of the staff appear to work very hard as well, courses come out quickly and accordingly. It's like they keep a really good watch on how you're doing because we were lingering with our appetizers for a while but the moment we were ready for entrees they magically appeared. This was also on a Monday night with the restaurant half full (impressive). They are very attentive. As soon as kebabs were removed from the skewers, someone would come along to take the skewers away. Now on to the food: We ordered quite a bit. Several salads, potatoes with mushrooms, fried liver - all excellent. Although I didn't try everything I can attest to the rest of the party loving everything. Entrees were plov, kebabs, french fries with garlic and herbs, sauteed veggies, and lots of lepeshka (bread). We also had the homemade compot (which is a fruit juice made from cooked fruit). EVERYTHING was delicious. It was fresh and the recipes excellent (the herbs in each dish were perfect). We finished the meal with some green tea which really helped settle the stomach after such a big meal. Overall, excellent service, great food, and the bill for 6 people only came out to $160. Like some other reviewer mentioned, the pop music really doesn't seem to go with the wonderful authentic Uzbek decor, but it wasn't loud or bothersome. Will be back again! Thank you! read more

I am in awe of this place! You have a beautiful walk at Brighton Beach and then you think of dinner date. So Nargis Cafe is the place to go! The area around Brighton Beach is a bit quiet with all small cafes around but this place is an exception. We enter this place and are warmly welcomed. The servers are very good with service. The authentic urbez food is Samsa and Manti which you should not miss on trying. I am a vegetarian and opted for Salad. I have never had such a tasty salad and the portion served is too much for one person. Also, try their breads which are home made. I've only ordered this through seamless and I love the food. I always get the shish kebab combo which comes with 2 kebabs of your choice, a salad, a side item, bread and a drink. The beef and chicken kebabs are always moist and tender. I always order the garlic and herb fries (lots of garlic in it)! They are the best fries ever! The spring salad is very refreshing. My family of 7 and I entered on a Sunday afternoon, and were immediately screamed at in Russian by who I assume was the hostess. We don't speak Russian so we were confused as to what was being said to us, but she kept screaming, "close the door, close the door". That left a poor first impression on us, but what made it worse is when she finally managed to speak in English, she said we wouldn't be able to be seated because we have no reservations. I would have been more understanding if she was kind, but the screaming and the attitude were completely uncalled for and unnecessary. We left immediately and will never be returning. read more

Just awful. I use to really like this place. I came here tonight for a friends birthday and we were treated like they were doing us a favor by letting us eat there. The food changed, just not good quality anymore and the service is complete garbage. Anytime we needed anything we had to ask 4 different people and wait at least 10 minutes for each request. We asked for water 3 times, for bread 2 times, and for sauce 4 times. One time we asked for our waitress and she came up to us and said "what?", that was the rudest a waitress has ever been to me. We paid for the check and waited 15 minutes to get our credit cards back. We asked for our food to go and we were told they threw it out by accident. For a party of 6 we got a lot of food to go and then all she could say was sorry. When we asked to speak to the manager she said ok and then came back with our food that she said they threw away. One of two things happened, she took it out of the garbage or she lied to us when she told us they threw it away. I stumbled upon this restaurant when in Brooklyn via Yelp. I was looking for good quality Uzbek food. I really enjoyed the food here and ordered a variety of dishes. First of all, the meat quality and seasoning was great for the kabobs and you could taste the flame of the BBQ which was great. The bread was also very good Uzbek bread. I had the liver which I also thought was good. The place was packed but I was still seated quickly and it did not take a long time to bring the food. The hostess was quick and the service was good as well. I would recommend going back or coming by if you are in the area it is clear that this is one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood. read more
