My wife and I were in Everett for a wedding and had a couple of days to explore the town and surrounding area. Stumbled across Narrative on Yelp and decided to give it a go. And we are so glad we did. We had a pour over and a latte and both were fantastic - especially the pour over. We arrived at the opening and learned we'd have to wait a bit for the kitchen to open which is 30 minutes after the store opens. We ordered breakfast and it was certainly worth the wait as well. I'll start by sharing this place offers oat milk, which is a must for me personally. That being said, the rest of what this place offers is just the cherry on top. You absolutely cannot got wrong with ordering anything, whether it's a pastry, sandwich, salad, pour over coffee, espresso drinks, or quiche. Yes, quiche. I have gone multiple times and ordered all I have mentioned--i was not disappointed. I live in Seattle, but I have gone all the way here on a weekend or for training day to have oat milk deliciousness. The espresso is sooooo smooth I just love the beans they use. Super plus for me is that the staff are super friendly, helpful, and always smile and give positive vibes off. I absolutely love this place! I came here the day of my cousin's graduation, so it will forever be known for that, and it was just wonderful. I got the biscuit and a ritual mocha, while my mom got one of their sandwiches. The service was just wonderful and the barista introduced himself to me as well. It wasn't that pricey for how fancy the place felt. Honestly, the ambiance was just wonderful. It felt very hipster, but comfortable. Now for the food. The biscuit was so big and had all the layers that we love biscuits for! It came with some homemade butter and some strawberry compote. The layers were flaky and buttery and a million times better than the Pillsbury stuff. My mom didn't say much about the sandwich but she finished it all and seemed to enjoy it. The mocha was divine. Absolutely divine. It used Ritual Dark Chocolate and made the drink so decadent and savory. It wasn't bitter at all as some dark chocolate mochas are, so I really appreciate that too. Let's start with it's small (as others have said) for $6 plus tip (awkward alert: They stare down at the iPad as you type). Then let's add a surprise: free griddle grit hidden on the bottom. If burnt stuff weren't there, the waffle would be okay -- nice sugaring crunch on a couple edges, although the dough itself needs some work in terms of flavor; my best waffle ever tasted like a donut. Mmmmmmemories! Although I was not able to solve the problem then and there because I got my order to-go, the owner did respond quickly as you see below, so extra star for that. I very much like this place as a place to work. Great vibe, excellent coffee (they know what they are doing!) and good food. My only gripe is that they seem to be pushing prices as high as they can. $6 for just about smallest of coffees (Cortado) is the highest I have seen anywhere, including in some high-end coffee places in downtown Seattle just last week. The other disappointment, especially for those looking to settle down and get some work done, is that street parking is generally for only 90 mins. Obviously that is absolutely outside the control of Narrative (and every other coffee place in the area has to contend with the same), but it's a factor to consider. Otherwise, highly recommended, for those with deepish pockets. read more

Can I just say... wow! I'm normally disappointed by food I order. I always anticipate the worst and hope for the best. This was the best. I ordered a cheddar and egg biscuit and added avocado and bacon The biscuit itself was so crunchy but soft in the middle, best biscuit I've had a restaurant ever! The avocado was perfectly ripe. It's one of those places where you order at the front cashier and then try to find a table. Which on a Friday morning is very difficult to do. The coffee is really good but EXTREMELY overpriced. If you're lactose-intolerant, vegan, or just want to be healthier, you're even more out of luck, because they charge $1.5 extra for alternative milk. I don't know of a single place that does that! I was shocked that my tiny oat cortado came to no less than $6.5. How can I still be expected to tip and support the baristas on top of that? If you charge this much for your coffee, you have the room to lower or get rid of surcharges altogether. I drove 28 miles to try Narrative Coffee out and I don't regret it at all! With that being said, if you're in the area it's a must try! On a Saturday afternoon a friend and I decided to embark on a mini road trip to Everett to give Narrative Coffee a try. We are coffee crazy and haven't had the greatest of luck with new coffee places (as of recently) but Narrative definitely curved that curse away from us. I went with a regular latte (usual) and my friend went with an almond milk latte. The barista (who I've forgotten the name of.. maybe Michael?) was extremely, nice and friendly and even threw in a chocolate chip cookie for us. The coffee was delicious, the shop was beautiful, staff was friendly and the cookie was amazing. I'd definitely drive back to Everett just for Narrative. 10/10 would recommend. read more

I absolutely love this coffee shop! I don't live super close, but I'll find an excuse to drive out of the way for the delicious coffee and food. This place is super busy on the weekend so prepare yourself for that. That being said, staff does an amazing job accommodating each customer. I mean for goodness sake's the person working the front takes orders and also makes pour-overs at the same time! The avocado toast is mouthwatering and they have a good selection of drinks to choose from. The spot is pretty spacious and has a nice exposed interior design. This has been my favorite coffee shop since it opened! It's like a little piece of Seattle, right here in Everett. It's been so fun to watch them grow... adding pastries, then wine & beer, and now breakfast & lunch menus! (Side note - they have the best chocolate chip cookie I've ever had ) The space is so open and beautiful - exposed brick, wood rafters, sleek tiling, etc. The baristas are all friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. They take the time to explain the menu, roasts, and to learn your name. Not the pretentious hipster stereotype! Narrative has created a truly great atmosphere. Annndddd most importantly - the coffee! The roasters rotate, and they are always delicious. The seasonal drink specials are creative and fun, and the standard menu items are always a good choice. We love Narrative and how they always pivot to make the most for their customers despite the times. A friend and I were in Everett this rainy morning and had breakfast at Narrative. Wow what a surprise. Super cool place. Kind of reminds you of Camber in Bellingham, except warmer and cozier. This place was hopping at 10am! Barely a free table or seat. Lots of staff. SupEr helpful young man taking the orders. We got the Bourbon bUtterscotch cortado and the fruitier version of the Pourover. Both great choices. Also had the Avocado toast which came with some funky raddish salad, really good! And the CroqUe Monsieur, which rivalled Brasserie 4 in WallaWalla, was beautiful. I love a ham that isn't sweet. The perfect amount of sauce. I have not a bad thing to say except maybe the restroom could've used a bit of care (cleaning). I will definitely come back! And to the couple with the 4yr old ? in pajamas and rubber boots.....maybe they could keep their feet on the floor where they're meant to be, and not on the couch, where people sit? ‍ just saying. read more

Best breakfast choices I've ever loved. Never disappointed in the menu, nor the chocolate croissants! Love their way of doing coffee, with a liquid sweetener to make it really memorable. Love the ambiance of this restaurant. Sometimes the employees can be too loud and disrupt the experience. It's a tall place, so tone it down a bit! Love sitting on furniture, across from new potential friends. Love the young people who come in. Bought a sweatshirt to remember them by when I moved away. Hands down the best coffee in the Seattle area in 2018. These guys are pulling amazing shots. Seriously, they are worth the trip to Everett. They also have some tasty noms - try their waffles. Amazing! Busy shop on a Saturday at 8 AM, but definitely one of the few espresso/speciality coffee places that also serves a good amount of food and not just pastries. Service was great and people adhered to COVID guidances. I tried an oat milk latte, a breakfast sandwich and a chocolate chip coffee. The coffee was the perfect temperature and milk nice and foamy. The biscuit used for the sandwich was divinely buttery and moist. The chocolate chip cookie had nice grains of sea salt on top to help cut through the sweetness. I was in Everett for jury duty and in desperate need of a coffee fix so I started to look for local coffee spots to hit up during the break. Just my luck that this place is not even a block down from the Snohomish court. It's such a quaint place. Love the atmosphere. Love that the music is not loud but loud enough that you enjoy it. Seating is adequate for both large groups and small alike. There's stool seating facing the window so if you just want to grab some coffee and sit by the window, it's perfect. Now the most important part! The coffee is amazzzziing! You can tell it's made with care and love. It's easily one of the best coffee I've ever had. I ordered a simple but my go-to drink: a vanilla latte. It was smooth and gave me the pick up I needed for the rest of my day. I also tried their salted chocolate chip cookie and it didn't disappoint either. Very happy with this find. Pretty sure I'll be here everyday till my jury duty is over. read more

I love the way their coffee tastes. I got a 12 oz double oat latte, no flavors. It really tasted like coffee without being acidic. Instead it had nice and sweet caramel and chocolate tones. Perfect! What wasn't so perfect was the atmosphere, I really did not enjoy watching the baristas taking out the trash and scraping food leftovers from plates right in front on me while I was trying to enjoy my coffee at the bar. Can't they do stuff like that in the back? What ultimately also put me off was the sticker shock: $7.50 for a 12 oz latte?!?!?!? And I thought Starbucks is fueling the inflation! It's really 3 1/2 stars. It's tough to give a coffee place with a great atmosphere and an amazing latte three stars. If you know my reviews I strive for fair and accurate and also understand there's others who can read the review and decide for themselves what's important to them. With that in mind, here's why: On the website I was impressed and inspired by the term quality forward to describe their product. And I would agree that the quality of the coffee and the clean and inviting atmosphere are quality forward. But the individual at the cash register was sullen, placid and truly not very helpful when I was struggling with the selection. Quality forward must indicate all products and (people!)exuding Freshness combined with flavor made with care and quality ingredients I would say. The biscuits professing I think to be house made, resembled more of a hockey puck. It wasn't hot and fresh - it was thick and greasy...clearly didn't seem made that day instead seemed held over anywhere from 1 to 5 days. Something I would expect at A non-quality forward place, such as Popeyes chicken. One final aspect as a barometer to my reviews in the past, now and going forward, is an element of a sense of 'value' about my experience...Always waiting at least an hour to remove any lingering emotion from the experience. To be blunt, I felt ripped off getting a biscuit like that and not feeling welcome into the establishment. So in the spirit of holding accountable businesses to the end of providing consumers the best value and quality for their money I give this- yes delicious coffee aside- 3 1/2 stars. read more

I don't really find such spacious cafes let alone so many different areas/types of seating. Probably only in Portland and other places further away from here. But man this place!! Whether you want to sit on a couch, be super focused in the corner next to the bathroom and have the least amount of interactions with people, or even a huge wooden table with a large group (if it's not already taken). This is advantageous in many ways with how the sounds aren't picked up and it's not too loud to get work done, but also you can conversate all day with your friends without distracting others. I got one of the drinks on the special holiday menu with the hot toddy and it wasn't exactly my cup of coffee but I thought that I'd try something new. The barista was super helpful in explaining the drinks, but now I know that I prefer not to have my coffees with coconut from personal preference. Ambience is great and the coffee was good, but I wasn't a fan of the ham and gruyere sandwich and probably won't order it again. I've worked in a cafe before and for ordering one coffee and sandwich to go, the service was slow- it was 25, maybe 30?minutes before I got my sandwich, and the group who ordered after me got their food first. As I waited and watched all the food being served, it all looked really good though and now I wish I had ordered something different. I'm from an area where you walk everywhere, so it's odd to wander around Everett and see how few social spots there are. Narrative is kind of an island of like-minded people in what otherwise feels like a sort of sleepy and anti-social neighborhood. Narrative's got a really nice atmosphere, friendly staff, and some great drinks. In particular the salted bourbon butterscotch latte stands out to me (I know, it's got quite the name) as well as the true test of a good coffee shop, a solid chai tea latte. On top of all that, they've got a pretty decent food menu including sandwiches, salads and biscuits. Narrative's by far my favorite place to work or study out of, and it's a pity there aren't more spots like this around. So long as you like being around people and don't hate "trendy" places, this is by far the first place I'd recommend checking out. read more

I came here during my lunch break while I was at Superior Court down the street for work (I am a paralegal). I am surprised that this place isn't flooded with attorneys and employees from the court house! It is so cute and beautifully decorated. The staff is so friendly, as soon as you walk in you are greeted with a warm genuine welcome. There is plenty of seating. I love how it is only one block away from the court house (there aren't many other options nearby either). I was super impressed with their products. I ordered an oolong tea and I was pleasantly surprised they use real loose leaf teas and they make it just how I learned tea is supposed to be made when I was in Beijing! They run hot water back and forth from the mug to the tea pot through the filter, that is the traditional method that not many places do anymore in the US. Of course tea bags are a big no no.
