And now to take a short break from finishing a jillion review drafts from the vacation we took in January I'm still catching up from... to finish a review draft I started last *December*, on my way to visit my parents for Christmas in NorCal. (Conveniently, too, given we're driving the same route in a couple weeks - might well stop here again. It's definitely way better than the usual big-name fast food options that are your only choice for *most* of the drive.) I'd just try to make sure to get there before 1 PM - last time, we learned, we made it accidentally *just* in time for their breakfast menu, which not only means you can get a fried chicken sandwich with a fried egg, clearly making it better, but it's also several dollars *cheaper*. For 9 bucks with fries - compared to 14 for the dinner version - that's probably *cheaper* than the average fast food chicken stop, separate from the fast that it was about a thousand times tastier. Though, while the vibe of this place is very much fast food, the food *itself* isn't fast food - it took exactly as long as you'd expect, given they're making everything fresh to order, but not any longer than that. (I didn't have any complaints about the speed, but it isn't Burger King.) Anyway, we figured since they had two breakfast items (the sandwich and a breakfast burrito) and there were two of us, we'd split both of them, which I wouldn't recommend as much. The breakfast burrito was by no means bad, but it was a bit floppier and not quite as filling - great chicken obviously, being the same chicken, but we agreed, we'd had way better breakfast burritos. The breakfast chicken sandwich was absolutely bomb, though. (Though their "medium" spicy was only a *hint* spicy, in my opinion - I never go straight for the "hot", cause sometimes at hot chicken places it's *stupid* hot, that and I was sharing them with my pepper-averse spouse, but if I went back, I'd just get my own sandwich and make it a little spicier.) Is it the best hot chicken sandwich in California? Probably not... but it *is* probably the best hot chicken sandwich you can get while driving from SoCal to NorCal, so I'm glad it's there.) Also, as far as value... they give you a *lot* of fries. Possibly too many fries. The fries were good, but there was nothing particularly special about them, other than the quantity. We could absolutely have shared an amount of fries *each* of our orders came from, for the two of us. (We didn't finish all the fries.) Only minor complaint, their drinks are all super sugary, and a little pricey at $4 for fountain soda - but at least it's a more premium brand of soda... still probably more than your daily sugar per cup, but at least it *is* sugar, not high fructose corn syrup. It does feel like they're missing out by not having a license to sell beer, though. That sandwich would go *really* well with a craft beer. read more

We visited Nate's because I was in my anything but McDonald's mood. Nate's was a wonderful surprise for me. We ordered 2 of their Nate's sandwiches with fries. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich was good. I ordered the chicken medium since their lowest level was naked. The medium had a pretty good kick to it. The chicken sandwich was topped with cole slaw and pickles. Both my wife and I enjoyed the sandwiches. The fries that came with our sandwich were delicious. It is one of my favorites fries. The two meals came with so much fries that we eventually threw most of them away. It would be nice if Nate's could sell their sandwiches without fries. We were passing through Paso on our way to Monterey and we didn't want to go to a sit down restaurant, but we also didn't want fast food. We both love hot chicken so stopped at Nate's and so glad we did. We had the hot chicken strips and the portion was good. The hot fries were tasty and plentiful and the bonus was the texas toast that came with the meal. These types of meals usually come with a slice of wonder bread so it was a nice surprise! They also provided 2 dipping sauces, a spicy one and maybe a ranch. The spicy one was legit spicy and very tasty. We sat outdoors, there were plenty of seats. The restroom was clean. These were the best chicken wings I have ever had! Nice and crunchy on the outside hot and succulent on the inside! I chose to go with mild for my spice level. It was a good choice. All the spiciness and flavor without the burning heat. The fries were great but the star was truly the wings! Their vanilla milkshake was pretty tasty. Super thick! Maybe I should have read reviews before trying Nate's Hot Chicken. As I sit here writing this review I find myself nodding to many of the comments that are listed in the "Recent Reviews" column to the right. Especially the 2/3 star ones. We definitely didn't have a 4/5 type of experience. Dear Hubby and I were driving back from the Bay Area. It was about dinner time, and we didn't want to take the time for a full sit down experience, even though it was his birthday. We'd had a long few days with ailing family members / hospital visits. We were just anxious to get home to our own bed and routine for a bit. In the same center as Starbucks and Tortilla Town, we decided to give Nate's a try. We were hungry and tired, in search of a break before more road time. Turned out to not be our best spontaneous choice. Music much too loud. No one eating there in the 6:00 hour; might have been a sign. The cashier wasn't unfriendly, exactly, but not very customer service oriented, either. When I mentioned that it was my husband's birthday, the man didn't smile, didn't offer a simple "Happy Birthday", nothing - deadpan. Maybe he couldn't hear me because the rap music was annoyingly playing at high volume. I get that Nate's, and other hot chicken places, are going for an urban anti-chic vibe, but it's not really family friendly, which cuts down on potential customers. The interior design had some interesting elements, but it didn't warm the cockles of my heart, let's just say. Foodwise, the piece of chicken on my sandwich was good, but it was thicker and smaller than the bun, and smothered in a lot of slaw and sauce. Thus the whole thing fell apart before I came close to finishing the chicken. That left a lot of mushy bread and very sauce-covered fingers to deal with, which was messy in the extreme. The taste was okay, but not memorable in a good way. In the dining room they had a TV playing "Fail 101" videos, some of which were amusing, but to watch people be humiliated by falling down or randomly getting hit with something unexpectedly got old before very long. I didn't feel uplifted by the dining experience. It was overwhelming/underwhelming at the same time. I might consider ordering something to go at a future time, but they're not at the top of my list during a drive-through trip past Paso Robles. Also, it wasn't that reasonably priced for what it was. I did like the fries. The chicken sandwich was so filling that I didn't finish all the fries. Brought them home and revived them in the air fryer for lunch another day. read more

I've been back two or three more times since my original review and maybe it was just bad timing but when they first opened, the music was on a different level, like an adult level. It would've been super awkward to take any children there. I didn't get back there for a couple more years as I'm from Southern California. I brought my wife and son in there who's 9. We had a great meal the food there is outstanding and if you like it spicy, you can definitely get your fix there. I always try to stop by if passing through. read more

stopped here on our way up north from LA! i've tried soooo many hot chicken places over the years and this spot is solid. unlike the other reviewers, my siblings and i appreciated the loud music! it kept us vibing as we ate. all the food was up to par with other great hot chicken joints. we loved that the toast that comes with the tenders was garlic bread! it was unique. there was also an abundance of condiments-- my favorite is always the honey or mayo ketchup! or both! i had a really good root beer with my food from the amazing soda fountain. i can say i genuinely enjoyed my meal. the interior of the restaurant is also super sick. such a cool spot! read more

I'm from the valley but work in Paso. I was looking for a hot chicken place to try in the area. I decided to give Nate's Nashville a try. Boy was I not disappointed! I ordered wings and 1 tender to try it out. First off the hot is HOT! Dont think you're getting a Dave's Hot chicken hot. It's HOT but the kind of hot that makes you torture yourself to eat it because it's that good! The tenders and wings came with ranch and a chipotle aioli sauce. That chipotle sauce combined with the wings or tenders is worth taking a drive to Nate's. Service was quick and it's a really nice place to just sit and eat as you ponder why you love torturing yourself with spicy food. Now that I know where to go I'll be revisiting this place as much as my mouth can handle it :) read more

I really wanted to love this place--every small town needs a solid chicken joint. The concept is there, but the execution just isn't. I've given it three tries now, hoping for a better experience each time, but I keep walking away disappointed. For starters, there's usually a funky smell when you walk in--definitely not the kind of thing that whets your appetite. The place is never sparkling clean, always a little grimy, and that's a red flag for me when it comes to food spots. The service is where this place really falls flat. When I walked in, there was no warm greeting, no smile, no sense that they cared I was there at all. I'm not expecting five-star treatment from a casual chicken spot, but a little enthusiasm or effort to make customers feel welcome would go a long way. Instead, it felt like the staff couldn't be bothered. Having worked in customer service most of my life, I know how much of a difference a simple "hello" and "how can I help you?" can make. That kind of basic courtesy wasn't there, and as a paying customer, that lack of care is pretty frustrating. As for the food, it's underwhelming. I'll give them this: they crisp the chicken nicely. But it's so greasy that the crispiness doesn't make much of a difference. The buns are subpar, and the fries are nothing special--just your average frozen fries you'd expect from a fast-food chain. The real disappointment, though, is the price. Almost $15 for a meal (without a drink) that feels like public school cafeteria food--and not in a good, nostalgic way. Wow! An amazing hidden gem in this town! PROs: The decor is on point. Awesome vibe, has a TV for games, and plenty of seating. The staff was very quick and knowledgeable on the menu. The menu has many different versions of hotdogs, fries, and chicken with 4 different spice levels. I had the chicken sandwich combo, level 3 and it was perfect. The chicken was hand breaded and fresh - not frozen. Fries were seasoned in a delicious way and the dipping sauce was delicious. There are multiple clean bathrooms and parking was easy. Just a follow up, yes I still consider Nate's one of the best Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich locations, period. So freaking good and so much better than most especially the fast spreading chain with a different first name starting with a 'D'. I have told many people about Nate's in Paso as a must stop by location when passing through Paso!! Especially if exiting 101 at 46E for gas or food or traveling hwy 46 snd or 101. If you live in Paso you are lucky to have such a great choice in town!!! Everything in my first review still stands but have not tried ordering ahead online again, but given owner kind response to my review I can only assume problem has been addressed so as not to be s issue again. The only real competition Nate's has a very good Nashville Hot Chicken restaurant in SLO at Bennetti Ranch Commons (S Higuera & Tankfarm Rd). I feel sorry for whomever put in all the hard work to make this a great work environment. The Tuesday AM crew looks angry from the moment you walk in. No conversation or hellos, not busy at all.... Not very fun getting glared at menacingly while waiting for a meal. The food is pretty good for a Paso spot and honestly just need to find a way to have employees that align with the company, these guys didn't want to be there....thus ruining the experience. Visited Nate's on 1/29/24, around 6:30pm, and ate outside at the picnic tables. My husband and I eat ordered a tenders & fries combo, 2 tenders with texas style toast, pickles and fries. You pick your heat. I went for medium because I was a scaredy-cat. My husband went for the "hot" and ended up with hiccups at the beginning, but ended up loving it. The chicken tenders were thick and juicy, and the toast was an excellent accompaniment, but the fries were damn outstanding! We also shared a chocolate shake. We were really impressed with the quality of the food. Loved the ambiance. I'd read some reviews about the explicit music, and I was not disappointed, loved it. Service was friendly, and quick. This sandwich gets the job done. It's meat with fixin's between bread, and it's not bad. But it's also not great. The crust on the chicken was a 6/10 - I've had worse, but I've also had much better (Grinning bear in Pismo!). A great crust needs to be crispy, with lots of crevices and nooks and crannies in the fried batter. The crust on this was closer to a chicken nugget than what I consider proper fried chicken. The breast meat itself was on the dry side, particularly in the thicker portion of the breast. Had they pounded it flat before breading and frying, it probably would have been more consistently cooked. I ordered Medium spice, and the spice was right for me, but of course that is all subjective. The slaw was OK, but for me personally I prefer less mayonaisey slaw. I prefer a vinegar based slaw, and this definitely wasn't that. All Mayo, all day. The fries were a pleasant surprise. Beer Battered? cooked well, seasoned well. I would normally give a 3 star review based on food alone, but the employees were pretty rude when I was in there, so I took an additional star off. The cashier didn't speak great english, and I had to ask them to repeat themselves a few times, and I had to repeat myself a few times. The cashier was visibly annoyed he had to repeat himself, and then laughed at me with the cook after taking my order. This place is amazing!! Apparently they just opened up 6 days ago and boy they did NOT disappoint. One of the best fried chicken places we have ever tried. Everything smelled really tasty walking in, the sauce can be a bit much for some. My wife had the Nate's original, but getting the sandwich out of the box it fell & came apart. With the fries etc the box was full. Maybe the box could be easier to tear to get to? I had a side of 2 tenders & coleslaw. The tenders were crisp, not juicy & very tasty. The coleslaw for me was bland & tasteless, I ended up not finishing it. We spent about $35 & then a tip so seems a bit much, but I like local restaurants & the owners of this have been successful in many of the endeavors. Being new I am sure there is a learning curve. My order somehow had his heat level which was completely unbearable for me to consume, while his lacked the heat he was anticipating. Decided to try this fairly new spot in Paso Robles. I ordered the chicken tenders and waffles and a side of cole slaw for pickup (through GrubHub). Order was ready when I arrived (10 minutes). The two medium-sized chicken tenders were well seasoned and spicy and the waffle was delicious. The cole slaw left something to be desired. It was bland with no seasoning and just cabbage and a little mayo. All in all, a good but not great meal. read more

Their sauce was yummy chipotle esq nice. I almost didn't go because there are no kids menu or ice tea. What sort of "southern" place doesn't have ice tea???
