Went here for breakfast since we were staying in the hotel. My friend ordered a latte and it was a bit dark in color and was very bitter. We overheard another lady complaining about hers as well. So the latte is definitely not very good. Other than that everything was good. Our server was friendly. The breakfast was good. My sausage was actually great and the breakfast potatoes were crispy. Everyone in my group enjoyed what they had. We ate dinner there later that night and it was pretty good. The curry could have used a bit more flavor but it wasn't bad. I was looking forward to trying this restaurant for breakfast. The ambience is very nice and it has that New England quaintness that I like. However, the food was somewhat disappointing. The coffee wasn't that hot and the toast was somewhat burnt. The sweet potato hash could've been cooked a little more and would've benefited from some seasoning or onion. Service was somewhat poor. My waitress never came back to ask if I needed anything or if I wanted a refill on my coffee even though she did so for the table next to me. Apparently she abandoned me and the hostess later brought me the check. I find this rude. Not a good place for a solo dining experience. read more

Always excellent food here may I recommend the bowl of oatmeal it has clumpy raisins in it. That's absolutely delicious. A little hint on your toast. Ask for the orange butter very very good. We stayed at the Hawthorne, so it was only logical to grab breakfast at Nathaniel's. Our experience was decidedly not good. We were the only guests in the dining room, but it took almost half an hour to get a server (Christina) to take our order. The hostess had to hunt her down, and then when she came into the dining room, she acted as if we had just sat down and wandered off without taking our order. When the food finally came out, another half an hour later, it was cold and lacked seasoning. Christina had to be hunted down two more times during our visit. She spent most of the time in the banquet room talking to the people who were prepping for an 80 person funeral banquet. She was not helping, just standing there talking. Other customers started filing in and while they waited forever for her to notice them, she and the hostess played with their hair over the banquet room's drink station. Ate here last year and we loved it. Had great risotto and lobster bisque. This summer came back, made reservations for 5pm over a month ago. We made reservations for the restaurant. We arrive and find they "last minute" booked a wedding in the restaurant and they expected us to eat in the bar "tavern" which is loud and dirty. Asked to speak to a manager who told us they booked a last minute wedding. Really? Nobody books a wedding last minute. There was nothing done except "sorry". Never mind we drove 2 hours to come to the restaurant. Nice to know they pushed their regular customers for a wedding with no heads up or concern. Will never be back. Food was definitely 5*, but the service was lacking severely this morning for breakfast. Service was 5* yesterday for service and food. I believe our server today was Taylor. She was great to start out. But then she disappeared. She finally came back to check on us. My friend needed more coffee as it had been empty and also needed more syrup. I works have liked more water. By the time she came back, I was done eating, so my friend didn't want more coffee or syrup. She told us that she was signing up for insurance. I'm sorry...we're customers. If you're going to do that, have another server check on your tables. After that, she was very short with us and not courteous at all. She was good when she was there. Local here, I came last night to watch a friend play, had a group of 6 of us. Accessible seating without reservations, but could have been iffy because their sister tavern (across the lobby) was closed for light reservations. Our server, Brandon, was swamped as the place was packed and I thought staffing was light. However, the bartender jumped in as needed. Drinks took an extremely long time to get to us, note we got our appetizer before any drinks. The app was the flatbread with ricotta and, nuts etc. It's delicious, a little too much on the cheese, but it's still decent. Hubs and I split the Chicken panini, and this was pretty good as well; it missed the mark slightly on the pesto pizazz you want, but overall, it was satisfying. Bonus here: if you have yet to try their cucumber salad, it is divine! Must get. Prices are super reasonable as well. Small restaurant within the hotel. Food wasn't bad but it wasn't particularly good either. Service was ok (went to the breakfast buffet so they don't do more than bring you your drinks and check). Reason I had to give it the two was the pricing. Really too overpriced for a basic breakfast buffet of fruit, eggs, bacon, sausage, and potatoes, with a couple of bad pastries. Not worth it. OH and originally made reservations thinking it was a sit down / menu brunch place based on their website. If it were the case that it's only on Sundays or something they should really state it on their website. read more

PROS: This restaurant is ran by the hotel don't forget. They had good food and the staff was very nice and accommodating. They have a lot of room to sit many people. Made a reservation for breakfast here on Saturday at 11 and upon arrival we found out that breakfast ended at 11. However, we received a yelp reservation confirmation the day prior. After speaking with the front desk and ultimately the restaurant manager, Mike, they were all super kind and were more than willing to accommodate us even though they were closed. This was not what we were expecting but we took them up on their offer and enjoyed seafood Benedict, pumpkin pancakes, and some great coffee. We absolutely appreciated the service from Emily, the hospitality of the entire hotel and their willingness to correct the issue. Often times this is not seen in dining facilities. My husband and I recently had dinner at Nathaniel's during our stay at The Hawthorne Hotel. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary. The experience was absolutely wonderful. The staff knew we were celebrating our anniversary and brought over a complimentary champagne toast! Everything we ordered was delicious. My husband and I shared the baked soft pretzel appetizer. The seasonal dipping sauces were tasty. We both ordered the braised short rib as our entree - to die for! Finally, we shared the turtle cheesecake for dessert. It was scrumptious. The speciality cocktails were creative and fun. Our server, Nickolette, was superb. She checked on us frequently and always made sure we had what we needed. She was super kind as well. Not impressed! They advertise both a breakfast buffet and brunch on Sunday. We showed up at 10:15 for our reservation only to have them tell us that neither the buffet or brunch was being served at that time. Their website says that the buffet is served until 10:30am. They then told us we can order off the menu just like the buffet. However, the buffet was $11.95 per person. They charged us over $45 dollars for two people. We had another party of two sit down next to us at least 15 minutes after we were seated. They got their drinks and ordered their meals well before our drink orders were taken. I ordered poached eggs. They came out hard boiled! We sent them back. In the meantime, the couple that ordered their meal before us actually finished it, paid, and was leaving before we even got our meals. No, just leave them at home. Overall, GREAT experience at Nathaniel's! I spent a few days in Salem for a work trip a couple weeks ago. One night, our boss made reservations for a group dinner at Nathaniel's. There were 16 of us. It was a little unfortunate that they had to split us up into 3 separate tables, but it worked out in the end. First off, service was top notch! Very attentive, friendly, not all stuffy and hoity toity. For a large(r) group, at no point did we feel like we were waiting too long for anything or like we were being neglected. Nice job training your staff, Nathaniel's! The food was delish! Everyone started off with an individually plated little crostini appetizer, compliments of the chef. And compliments TO the chef because that little toasted piece of bread with edamame hummus was tasty! Our table then shared the goat cheese/prosciutto dates, heirloom tomato medley, and the watermelon sundae (this was SUPER good - savory and refreshing at he same time). All the appetizers were very good. For my dinner entree, I had the Pan-Roasted Mahi Mahi with a Mint Emulsion. I was really hesitant about the mint part. I was afraid it was going to taste like toothpaste or Listerine! To my surprise, it was light and gave a nice subtle but good flavor to the sauce and fish. I ordered the demi-portion which seemed like a pretty big amount to me, and I was stuffed afterwards. All my other coworkers really liked their meals as well...so much that we were all too stuffed for any dessert. Side note: Not that I usually eat a gluten-free diet, but I can appreciate that their menu had so many gluten-free items. The town of Salem is kinda sleepy if you ask me, so most places are closed by 8 during the week...Nathaniel's closed at 9pm. I would say that's the only draw-back. We were there just past 10 and at no point did the rush us or feel like we were being kicked out. But for a larger party that likely will take a few hours for everyone to eat, the hours may not coincide unless you arrive early for dinner. I would highly recommend dining here for a nice dinner when in Salem. I doubt realistically I'll ever be back in the city to enjoy it again, but if I am I'd surely make a pit stop! read more

We made reservations for a Sunday Brunch at Nathaniel's for today , 7/19/2020, a few days ago. I have received and responded to a text to confirm the reservation. But when we showed up. There was a function at Nathaniel's and it was not available for the confirmed brunch reservations. We were then passed on to the Tavern On The Green, whom we were told will be honoring the reservation. The wait was long to get seated, and even longer for the food. I understand that they are trying to cater to their own patrons plus probably the reservations made for Nathaniel's Restaurant, like our group. This review is for Nathaniel's and our experience (non experience) of having our reservations not honored and passed on to the next adjacent restaurant. They should have not taken our booking if they were already booked for a function. That's a poor way to do business. read more

I won a certificate for brunch for 2 at Nathaniel's for their Sunday Jazz brunch through a holiday raffle that benefited Rosie's Place. My husband & I stopped by for the jazz brunch on Sunday and enjoyed it! I recommend making a reservation. We didn't think of that and the only table for 2 that was available was directly in front of the musicians. If my husband shifted in his chair, he probably would have knocked over the guitarist. The wait staff was attentive, and the 3 course brunch menu had lots of tasty options. I'd definitely recommend the jazz brunch to a tourist visiting Salem, because it's a fun experience. We headed to Nat's for Sunday Jazz Brunch after visiting the PEM. Not being sure how long we would spend in the museum I made a reservation for 1:15, in hind site I'm not sure if it mattered. We arrived at Nat's early, really early for our reservations (12:35), and inquired if there was anything but acknowledged that we were way off base. Sadly, nothing was available, but we could wait in the hotel lobby or the bar for a drink. We chose to relax in the lobby, knowing we should settle in. Sadly, our reservation time came and went and still no table. The hostess did come out and apologize and offer us a drink while waiting (we declined, we were tired as it was). And we waited and waited...just a moment or two before 1:45 (a full half hour after our yelp made reservation) we were seated. Our hostess was super apologetic again and offered a drink again (we just got juice). Our server came, we ordered our starter and main, got coffee, jazz played. All was good. Starters: Fruit Plate-decent portion, good flavors fresh as heck. Raspberry, mandarin and frisee salad: No raspberries?? Pecans very tasty. Entrees: Steak and Eggs: Steak cooked perfectly, eggs looked just right, bountiful plate. Seafood Eggs Benedict: Eggs over poached, otherwise really quite good. Coffee refresh could have been a bit quicker (since the cups are tiny). Jazz duo packed it up at this point, so we only had 1/2 a jazz brunch...if only we had that table at 1:15 (as planned). Deserts...Both of us wanted the marscapone cake, but sadly only one slice was left. I had the cheesecake which had the most undercooked and sad crust in the land. The bite of the other cake was AMAZING...so if you go, get that. Oh and do yourself a favor and get there for the first wave of brunch, seems no one wants to leave...lots of birthdays etc there. I want to give more stars, and realize that it's hard to manage guests out when they don't want to leave, but when your first seating is still there almost to the end of brunch, you have to do something. read more

Stopped by for breakfast, Monday morning, returning home from a vintage event in the area. The Hotel is gorgeous, constructed in 1925, and has been beautifully maintained. I did not have a reservation, but gave my name and was seated within 15 minutes. Hostess was pleasant. Dining room is lovely, quite formal. Typical breakfast menu/offerings. Had coffee/juice and caprese Benedict. Server was very friendly and attentive. I was a party of one. Only very minor issue was: the Benedict was served on a tomato and Only a tomato. I was under the impression there would be an English muffin, THEN tomato, egg, etc...otherwise I would have ordered a side of toast, but not big deal. Potatoes were amazing. Price was average. What I do like is hat the home fries are deep fat fried vs browned on the flat top. On the down side, the eggs had a tendency to be overcooked. What did I learn today? My husband and I decided to try this spot out during restaurant week in Salem. I have never eaten here before, and I wanted to see how the Hotel decorated for the holidays. The decor was beautiful and really helped us get into the holiday spirit! I love the historic feel of the Hotel and stunning woodwork throughout all the rooms, I am a sucker for it. The room was quaint and cozy, a wonderful spot for a date night. For an appetizer my husband got the mushroom soup, it had great flavor! The scallops wrapped in bacon did not disappoint either. I had a nice piece of fish, and my husband had a steak that was cooked perfectly. The best part about our evening (other than the food) was the entertainment. We were able to listen to some very talented musicians on the piano, flute, and acoustic guitar. The singer had such a wonderful voice, and her bubbly personality brought a sense of humor and relaxed feel to the band. We will certainly be going back to Nathaniel's soon for our next date night! read more
