Visited Jackson for the first time (from Fresno) in more than 35 years. My Mother was born and raised here, so my Brother and I came back you re-trace her/our roots. Checked into the National about an hour before our scheduled check-in time of 3pm...no problem at all (our room was ready and our receptionist was more than willing to provide the early check-in). First off...the hotel, both inside and out, from the front steps to the Main Lobby to the Rooms to the Hotel Bar and Restaurant, is immaculate! We understand the Hotel recently went under a complete renovation. Don't know what it looked like before, but it's certainly beautiful now!!! Our room (a Queen Suite) was "smallish", but suited our needs perfectly. We selected this room primarily because it had a bed in each room (1 Queen bed for my Brother and 1 extremely comfortable Day Bed for me). I mention this because it is our understanding that most rooms only have one bed. Each room had a 32 inch flat-screen TV (with DirecTV). The bathroom was nice...sink, toilet, and a stand-up shower. Both rooms and the bathroom were adorned with beautiful antique furnishings. STAFF: Exceptional!! Kind, attentive, courteous, and helpful. Questions about the Hotel itself (or the city, or the "sights" or just about anything) were thoughtfully answered at a moment's notice. BAR: Excellent!! Outstanding staff (Kristen was a GREAT personality AND Bartender). DELI: Top-notch Sandwiches, Salads, and Desserts; all made on-site. A complimentary breakfast is served there each morning. RESTAURANT. Stanley's Steakhouse, although "high-end" (price range), serves delicious gourmet dinners (and Champagne Sunday Brunch). The 9 ounce Filet Mignon I had for dinner was the best I've ever tasted!!! The only minor (very minor) "con" I can mention is that the rooms don't have refrigerators. But, on the positive side...we purchased some frozen, homemade Ravioli from a local establishment on Saturday afternoon. The Hotel Concierge took our package of Ravioli and stored it in the Hotel freezer until we checked out on Sunday. When we return to Jackson ANYTIME in the future, we will be staying at The National Hotel. read more

What a wonderful Hotel to stay at. Everything about this historic hotel, from the fantastic restaurant, the food, outstanding bar, it's employees, the clean accommodations (did I mention how GREAT the bed was?) was memorable and located within the foothills of the mother lode of the Sierras. It was quite evident that the ownership of this facility invested a pretty penny to modernize everything. It's very ADA compliant with such a comfortable and inviting environment. If you are the type of customer that is looking for a super spacious type hotel room......this may not be your cup of tea. However, for the rest of us that enjoy the simple things in life..........you're going to love it. It's quite simply beautiful in it's own special way. I'll be back! read more

Too cute....and only an hour from home! I was there last week for a small work planning meeting and plan to return again soon with my husband! The rooms are renovated and very clean and comfortable. My bed was super comfy, sheets were soft and the bathroom had everything you need. Was lucky enough to be in a front facing room with the big balcony so got to see all the comings and goings of Jackson (which is not much mid week, but could be entertaining on the weekend!). A big thanks to Stephen and Ashley for assisting with meeting arrangements and going out of their way to make us feel at home. Amazing customer service! Hope to be back soon....and just maybe I'll get to see the ghosts that everyone talks about! read more

Unfortunately we had a bad stay here. The event planner would not discount our rooms, even though we had a party of 15 couples staying the night for a 50th birthday and we had agreed upon discounted price on our room block. We also had a horrible....and I mean horrible dinner downstairs in the steakhouse that is on the ground floor of the Hotel, called Stanley's. The food was served to us cold and undercooked and when we sent it back to the kitchen it took almost an hour to get back our meal! It's such a shame that this hotel is being wrecked by the poor quality of service in the hotel and the restaurant, because the history of the property is so neat. Oh well until the service is improved I would steer clear of this hotel, and pick another location. read more

I am not sure just how to rate my stay. I stayed here two weeks in a row. The night manager and front desk man were very kind and made me feel extremely welcome. The room was beautiful and the bed plush. But I swear the "Spirit" in the Mansion does not like me. Twice I stayed and twice I woke up with something strange in my bed and it did not come from me. Either their is a Spirit messing with my head, or someone is crawling into my bed while I'm asleep. Either way I am freaked out! Thank you to the Night Manager for taking care of the situation and handling it with the utmost care. read more

Wonderful experience, 2x in the last few weeks. The staff was very friendly, the room was immaculate, very clean, and bed was super comfortable. Will be staying here again. What a fantastic stay at the national hotel, not only do I think this was a wonderful place to stay, but all 13 people with us did also! The staff was very accommodating and friendly and helpful. While there we had a wedding rehearsal dinner for 40 people. The steaks were delicious , sea bass outstanding, chicken moist and yummy. The continental breakfast was a surprise, and was very good ,fresh fruit, delicious pastries etc. very nice.They took care of every detail with smiles.... The hotel is beautiful, and bed linens over the top! You won't be disappointed if you stay at the hotel. read more

I have stayed at the National Hotel countless times in the past, but had stopped going there as it fell into neglected disrepair. The new owners have performed a miraculous transformation without losing the sense of stepping back in time. They have added an elevator and central air, heated floors in the bathrooms, luxurious linens, etc. There are many places to explore nearby and great entertainment in all seasons, I especially like to go to Daffodil Hill in the Springtime, there are many vineyards and tasting rooms, Kirkwood for winter sports, great fishing etc. I can't wait to organize a group of friends to go there like we used to for a relaxing fun-filled weekend. read more

This review is for a block reservation of rooms - Oh boy, where do I even begin. Back in September my husband and I reserved a block of rooms for our friends and family for our May wedding at nearby Amador Cellars. From the very beginning communication was a big problem with the front desk staff and their event coordinator Stephanie (who has since left the hotel). We gave them all the information they needed (guest names, number of guests, type of room, etc.) in a highly organized excel spreadsheet, listed in multiple emails AND verbally in phone conversations. No matter how organized we were, the staff just couldn't figure it out - it was pretty pathetic considering there were only about 10+ rooms in the reservation block. Throughout all of the countless hours of phone conversations and emails with multiple staff members over the course of several months we remained patient with them and continued to correct their ongoing mistakes, but things got really bad when our friends and family began to call the hotel with their credit card information. They LOST more than half of our family's credit card information (my own dad gave them his credit card number FOUR times because they kept losing it). It was very embarrassing to have our friends and family give the hotel their credit info multiple times. At one point a front desk staff member even offered the honeymoon suite to my husband's brother when he called in his credit card information. What?! Additionally, confirmation emails were only sent out to some of our family and friends (we even got some sent to our email address by mistake). We also asked if it was possible for the hotel bar to stay open later for our wedding after party (and for them to get more of our business!), but got no response from anyone on the staff for three weeks, until we finally sent a nasty email. I guess they don't understand the concept of customer service. It was just one problem after another and the level of incompetence was overwhelming. These problems listed above were all just leading up to our wedding weekend, but the weekend itself had many problems as well. The only special request we had was for my cousin and his large family to have two adjoining rooms (a King Suite and a King Regular). We were assured many times in the months prior that this was no problem and they specifically gave us the room numbers ahead of time. Well, to no one's surprise my cousin and his family were given two King Regular rooms on separate floors AND they tried to charge them the extra amount for the King Suite room that they DID NOT receive despite our reservation. Wow. My dad tried to talk to the manager (who was not onsite that day), and he had to wait almost 45 minutes for the manager to show up. All said and done after MONTHS of struggles and stress with this hotel and the manager only comped one night for the honeymoon suite. If I had to do it over again I NEVER would have gone with this hotel. There was so much work and time on our part doing the hotel's job. During our correspondence with the hotel staff in the months leading up to this weekend, the only apologies we received were blaming past staff members and previous managers. There was no consistency, as the staff turnover rate seemed very high - we talked to several managers and event coordinators all blaming the previous one for mistakes in communication. It was just like children blaming each other for their mistakes. If you are considering booking a block of rooms at The National Hotel I would highly advise against it, because that is just too much to ask from a hotel which operates on chaos, disorganization and incompetency. I wish I could give them less than 1 star, it was THAT bad. read more

We were in a king room, it was a nice, the of size bed was excellent we had a private balcony the air condition was phenomenal and the TV works great and the bathrooms are nice did I mention it was clean. We had dinner found it to be good food but way overpriced! Walked away feeling I would have given it five stars if it was reasonable priced. read more

Recently my best friend and I planned a long overdue "girls weekend". I chose the National Hotel because I'd always wanted to stay there. I had been to Jackson several times and had enjoyed the town very much. We had a GREAT time! The Hotel is gorgeous! The restaurant was very good! (The filet mignon and creme brûlée were to die for!) We had the John Wayne room and I Loved the big white robes and hanging out on the balcony! My friend loved "ghost hunting" and I had a blast just being there! The locals and shops are very cute and friendly and the front desk manager Stephen D. was AWESOME! He really went out of his way to make sure we had a wonderful stay! This place is HORRIBLE. I came here many years ago before the recent "restoration" and it was magnificent in every way. Very much an intact old-west mining town hotel, with rickety floors, and actual old furnishings and fixtures like the original bar, original doors and windows, and so forth. Now it has been completely destroyed by people with absolutely no sense of aesthetics or history. A calamity for California and its disappearing treasures. All horrendous and personality-less yuppie interiors that should be in a Best Western or some quaint little potpourri shop, NOT in a historic goldrush hotel. Absolutely unforgivable. We celebrate our Christmas-time anniversary locally every year. We are from San Andreas and we find a different hotel and restaurant to enjoy for one night, and then hurry home for our Christmas festivities. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and night at the newly-renovated National Hotel in Jackson. We love to support business in our Mother Lode area and we'd heard mixed reviews about the new hotel. We decided to jump in and give it a try and we were thrilled! The hotel and our room were beautiful, fancy and lush. Our package came with complimentary drinks and appetizers and breakfast with beverages, pastries and fruit---very, very reasonable. The restaurant was warm and friendly with a great waitress who was attentive and helpful. The menu offered a variety of taste treats. The entire staff went out of their way to make our stay memorable. read more

Beautifully restored hotel with very helpful and friendly staff. Our room was impeccably furnished and the updates to accomodate the demands of the 21st century guest were tasteful, definitely an upscale experience. Prices for March even during "Dandelion Days" were reasonable, especially when compared to equally priced but less-luxurious chain hotels. Dinner was also very good. The hotel and main street in Jackson have a lot to offer, and the charm of the hotel was a pleasant surprise. read more

My husband and I stayed here for my birthday and had the best time ever! I have stayed in the best hotels all over the world and this is my favorite place to stay. The rooms were amazing with heated bathroom floors and fluffy beddings. The food at the restaurant was so good we even got desert and we both don't like sweets. You can even go to front desk and ask for a ghost hunting kit and run around the hotel looking for spirits. The bar is fun and lots of history. Love the staff .... read more

Came for dinner with my family with a reservation. We waited over an hour for our food after placing our order, which came out cold and some of the steaks were under cooked. Not up to par at all with $20 to $35 per plate. We were extremely disappointed. My sister barely ate her steak after it was put back on the grill, but they didn't take it off the bill. Since we were a party of 12 we expected to be taken care of more. The waitress was extremely nice, but was also very new and management should not have given her such a large party. The National Hotel in Jackson, CA is a very prestiguous, outstanding place to stay and to relax. I really enjoyed my pleasant overnight there last night. Spencer is a wonderful, friendly, awesome hotel clerk that I have met him last night. The hotel service is excellent. The owner, Stanley, whose I met is a friendly, wonderful, awesome, too. The restaurant downstairs is a very pleasant, classic atomosphere. I give the National Hotel more than five star rating. It is a six star award! read more

I love historic hotels. I kind of expect some flaws here and there in a building that's been around for a hundred and sixty-six years, but that is not the case with the National Hotel! I don't know that I've ever stayed anywhere that everything was so perfect. The room was absolutely beautiful. With it's antique King size bed, fluffy down comforters, cozy fireplace, and all the other antique furnishing, I was sorry I didn't have more time to spend in the room! The bathroom, while blending visually with the period environment of the room, was filled with all the luxury one would expect in a modern 5 star establishment. The food was wonderful, and all of the staff were friendly and professional, and they even had a young lady singing and playing guitar in the bar/restaurant that evening! I considered staying in the room until they had to evict me, but decided it would be better to be allowed to come back. Can't wait!! read more

Loved this place! As soon as we got there for our impromptu stay they offered to show us the room before even making us book it. I was in love with the queen suite with the nice huge bath tub! After checking in we went down to the bar and we just loved the bar tender I think her name was Kelly ! She was very nice and inviting! I'd definitely stay here again in a heart beat! Btw.... I had always wanted to stay here. It's nice and I had heard it was haunted and wanted to see for myself. So my husband booked a night here for us for my birthday. The hotel is old and beautifully updated and the staff is friendly and attentive. Our room was really nice (King Suite), the bed was very comfortable and had nice high thread count linens. We ate dinner at the steak house and everything was delicious. After that we walked around town, everything in the town is so old and interesting. We got back to the hotel around 10 and I wanted dessert so we went to the bar and asked the guy behind the counter if we could order, turns out the kitchen was closed but they had celebrated one of their family members birthdays that day and had leftover birthday cake. Someone ran to the kitchen and served me a slice. The guy behind the counter was the owner. He sat and talked to us for a good hour telling us what went into the renovation. Super nice guy. So if you are contemplating staying here, do it! You'll love it! Oh and we didn't experience anything paranormal but we did sleep like the dead! Bwahahahaha!! Sorry, couldn't resist! read more

On the weekend of may 2nd and 3rd my wife and I plus 4 close friends spent two nights celebrate my wife and I 30th wedding anniversary at the National Hotel . We all really enjoyed our stay. The hotel was comfortable, hotel staff friendly and very helpful, making for a very wonderful experience. We hope to return for another stay in the not to distant future. Came on a whim. Asked if they had a room for the night . It was sunday during hoilday. was told yes. We currently had reservations at another hotel. We called and cancelled our room at the other place. We then unpacked all our bags,after parking (which was a nightmare), We asked for a room,A man whom was working sunday with a nice younger gal. Said rooms wont be ready for couple hours. It was 2;30. check in was 3;00pm. This person was rude! really needs to be taught how to talk to customers. I f I had a person like this working at mY shop,I would want to know. Things like sorry sir, I apologize sir. Lets see what we can do,or Im sorry we did not tell yoi about the delay. shessh, instead he said because you did not have reso's cant get you in. He also said they had a heavy duty sat and rooms are all dirty. We had one hour to make a wedding. so we could not wait 2 hours for a room. I t would have been nice to have been told when we first asked for a room, that check in would be late.We understand things happen. But its the we were talked too.rude rude rude. we will try next time to make reso's. lets hope we don't see mr RUDE. read more

I stopped by the Deli at the National recently to check it out, while I noticed many tasty looking treats in the glass display cases, I was primarily looking for a quick tasty sandwhich for lunch. Unfortunately, I got neither. There were two other "tickets" in front of me, a single gentleman awaiting coffee and a husband and wife with a baby. The single staff member behind the counter was very nice (which is the only reason I rated any stars on this). I ordered a turkey, swiss avacado sandwhich on a sourdough roll, which I found to be very pricy at almost $9. I happened to be watching my phone the whole time because I was hoping to see a friend on their half hour lunch break... I ordered at 12:55 and didn't get my food until 1:25... by then my friend's lunch was over and I was very disappointed that it took SOOOOOO LOOOOONNNNNGGG to get a flippin' sandwhich. And then on top of that, it tasted terrible. The sourdough roll was dry, there was too much mayo on the sandwhich and very little meat, cheese or avacado. I ended up throwing my bread to the birds and the rest of my sandwhich in the garbage after only a couple bites. Please, if you are local or visiting and looking for lunch on Main Street Jackson, I advise you to go up the street to the Motherlode Market and Deli. Not only is their food fresh and delicious, but you get it QUICKLY. P.S. ~ I was not the only disgruntled person at the deli this day. The gentleman waiting for his coffee waited too long as did the husband and wife with the baby... I even shared a look of annoyance with the wife at how long it was taking to get anything. I felt so bad for the one staff member behind the bar because she was taking so long that I even took the liberty of bussing a table for them... The Hotel is very pretty, but after my experience there and looking at their prices for the deli, the steakhouse and the room rates I think they need to watch a few episodes of Hotel Hell so they can get a better idea on pricing... I know they may want to appeal to "higher end" people, but locals help keep places like this in business... I hope they figure this out because I think the place has a lot of potential to do good and Jackson could use something to perk up the run down Main Street and bring the locals back... but at the prices they have, that won't be happening for a bit... read more

My husband and I visited this hotel June 7th 2013 and left on June 8th 2013. We loved the staff the food and room with a few exceptions. When we checked out we were asked if we enjoyed our room. We let the gentleman at the front desk know what the issue's were and he said yes other guest said them same thing and that the owners were working on the issue's. We stayed in a king room, there was only one small shelf in the bathroom so I couldn't put all my stuff on the shelf nor could my husband. There was no mirrors except in the bathroom over the sink, and there was no area vanity for me to sit to put on my make up. You see I am handy capped and have to sit down to put on my make up.
