The definition of "hidden gem"! Located right in the middle of downtown Ione is the Ione hotel and I've been wanting to try this place out for years. I am seriously shocked at how good the food was and the overall experience. My girlfriend kept saying how the inside reminded her of how the titanic looked on the inside and I can definitely see that. The food was amazing. The menu had a bunch of great options to choose from but we went for the sirloin steak & shrimp scampi for entrees. Before the main course we ordered a plate of boneless wings (1/2 lemon pepper 1/2 buffalo). I can't tell but I think this were cut up and trimmed in house because I've never had boneless wings like this. They usually resemble chicken nuggets but these had a different shape to them. They were golden brown and fried to perfection with an amazing crunch! The flavors were just right and made the whole plate delicious. Like seriously I would go back just for the boneless wings. If you come here come HUNGRY because the portions are huge. My steak came with a choice of about 5 sides to choose from AND either soup or salad AND garlic bread. I went for the minestrone soup and I was very pleased. It was almost closer to a chili than minestrone but I enjoyed every single drop. It had a little kick of spicy that I loved! My steak was cooked to perfection and was a huge cut. Served with a big side of rice pilaf & veggies made it the perfect dinner for me. My girlfriend loved her shrimp scampi especially with the risotto and she ate them together as one. She liked how cheesy and creamy the risotto was. We also each got a desert to take home (we haven't tried them yet but they are huge). The prices of everything are really amazing as well! We had so much food and the total was around $75. Overall if you're in the area at all you should definitely stop in and eat here. You will not be disappointed!! I can't wait to go back!! read more

This place is a hidden gem. I've been taking motorcycle rides through the NorCal foothills/Gold County for over 30 years and never took the time to stop at the hotel. I spent most of my time and $ at the bar across the street. I am a paranormal enthusiast for reasons that could go on for pages... when I heard about the Ione Hotel being "haunted," I reserved "the most active" room for my birthday. Supposedly room #13 is pretty active and someone actually died in the room.. and was the former "Black Rose" prostitute's room. Good enough for me. To make this short, I did see a figure to my left as I was locking my door to go down to the saloon. Actually looked like a miner. I turned around again and it was gone (2nd floor staircase, first room on the left near a display case). BESTOF ALL... the steakhouse is great. It actually has on old Miwok Indian well in the middle of the restaurant. My personal experience.. it was my birthday and my wife called ahead to pay for my dinner as a surprise. The restaurant owner found out and bought me a birthday Brandy Old Fashion (my fav) and went above and beyond that to make my birthday dinner exceed all expectations. The prime rib was awesome Thank you, Cindy. I'll recommend the Burke Family restaurant to anyone traveling though Ione or just looking for a great steak dinner. I'll be stopping more often on my motorcycle rides for sure. Oh, only reason for 4 stars.. the rooms could use some new paint and TLC, but as it is, it adds to the impression that this was an old West hotel/brothel back in the day. Have not spent the night yet here but hopefully in the future. I did eat at the restaurant and it was fantastic! There is a well inside that you can look down. I had the spicy chicken sandwich which I recommend my friend had veggie omelet with potato hash. If you are ever in the area or are passing through you have to stop and eat here. I can't believe this place only has 3 stars! It's awesome! Old building in downtown Ione- every room is uniquely decorated and completely old school! The entry walkway is beautiful! Did not spend the night here. Did wait in the lobby for guests who where staying there. Old charm of a mining town. Wonderful huge staircase. A collection of curios in several display cases. Old chairs and furniture. Lobby bar has a collection of historic photos. Lobby could use a good dusting. read more

Deadwood meets Barton Fink with a little Shining thrown in. This historic hotel and saloon in Amador County has seen better days, much better days. The building itself (originally built in 1851) is interesting and they have managed to preserve some of its original character. However, this old cowboy is tattered. And he needs some new clothes and a shave, badly. Our room was shabby, and I don't mean shabby chic. Torn curtains, missing tiles in the bathroom, stained carpet kind of shabby. Polyester blend sheets. Flat, synthetic pillows. Lumpy mismatched comforter. The room was big, though, I'll give it that. We tried the dining room on the first night. It was institutional food at best, the kind you imagine they ate in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Completely inedible. The biggest effort made was probably opening up the cans of sauce and microwaving the vegetables. Sleeping was difficult, especially on Saturday night, and not only because of the shoddy bedlinens and uncomfortable mattress. At about 3am, one of our fellow guests was pounding on her door, apparently locked out. This went on for about 1/2 hour before anyone let her in, or she passed out in the lobby. About an hour later, I heard the melodic trills of a couple having throw-down, full-on sex in the parking lot outside our window. I thought we had miraculously gotten HBO on the crappy mini-TV in our room. No, no, it was live and about 100 feet away. Not that this was the hotel's fault, but it does speak to the environment. I couldn't sleep till everyone was satisfied, which thankfully didn't take long. It's hard to see a landmark with so much possibility in a such a miserable state. On our way out of town, we heard that there is new management coming on board, and the town is hopeful to see some improvements. Ione Hotel, I hope that you get the help that you need and deserve, for it would be a shame to see you continue to be down on your luck and eventually waste away. read more

I'm a big fan of horror and paranormal stuff. So needless to say, I was pretty excited to stay here especially after reading articles about the legend of this hotel and the stories that came with it. Unfortunately, with the exception of a few unusual noises, I can't say that I actually had witnessed anything. Bummer. But overall, I liked staying here for the ambiance and the history. Everything had a very aged and authentic feel. If you keep that in mind ahead of time about this place then you won't be setting yourself up for disappointment, as the point of this hotel is its history. Not its lack of 5 Star amenities. That being said, if you're going to spend the money for a flat screen TV in every room then the next focus should be the bedding. The blankets and covers were pretty flimsy and the ease with which the sheets pop off the mattress makes me question how often they're changed and washed. The only other thing I found an issue with was the gentleman who was managing that evening. Upon checking in, we requested to have a late check out the following day (were in town for a wedding and was anticipating a huge hangover from the reception party). This is a pretty straight forward request and I've always been answered with either a 'yes' or 'no' in the past. Instead, we were told that the request would be accommodated free of charge.....as long as we left a big tip. .........ummmm.....yeah. We reminded him that their website clearly stated 'late check outs must make prior arrangements'. I guess that really means we were supposed to do it at the time we made the reservations.....? I don't know, but he just replied with the same comment about leaving a big tip. He was better off declining the request and that would've been it, but I found this to be pretty tasteless and unprofessional. Hence the three stars. read more

Stayed in the bridal suite. The room itself was themed really well. The claw foot tub was big enough ti fit me. I'm very tall so it was a pleasant surprise. Large shower big enough for two and then some. The downside to the room was the heat. Unbearably warm. No AC in the room at all. There was a fan that we used in the doorway to pull cooler air in from the hallway. If it's going to be hot you'll probably want to stay elsewhere. read more

Definitely think the place was overpriced for the quality of the room. Unfortunately we had to stop in town on a road trip and it was late so our selection of places was limited. The guy at the counter was very friendly. The parking behind the hotel was a little confusing as well. The rooms were definitely outdated and very small. The bathroom was cool, the toilet had one of the hanging chains you pull to flush which was fun. But it flushed so loud! Supposedly this place is haunted? Whatever, I slept great! read more

This is a quaint hotel in downtown Ione,CA. The feel is very old timey which is the quaint part. Our room was lacking in several areas . There was no coffee service in the room or available for guests. There were no cups or glasses in the room, taking night medication was nearly impossible. There were no Kleenex. There was no way to open the drop down curtains, prohibiting sunlight from entering. We made several attempts to turn on the TV but couldn't figure it out, a directions sheet with the satellite instructions would have been helpful. A reservation was made well in advance with Amood. The evening I arrived the note on the desk required me to call a phone number. Amood told me he was all booked up even though I reminded him of my reservation. After some discussion he agreed to rent me a room for one night for $99. His handy man showed up and did the paperwork and showed me to a room. It was well used and a bit shabby to say the least but acceptably clean. Certainly not worth $99--more like $50. The loud music downstairs continued until 10:15 so after that I was able to sleep. The toilet hardware leaked a little onto the floor each time it was used. No ghosts showed up. I'm not going to try the place again and I don't recommend it. Very poor management. read more

I attended a Paranormal investigation this weekend at The Ione Hotel. The staff was very accomadating and eager to show us around, give us history and paranormal information they had. Its a 14 room hotel with 2 balconies a BAR, billard room with Kareoke and Let me just say I ordered a burger ( Cheese burger) and Fries and It was one of the best burgers I have had in a long time. If your looking for a Historical experience with a paranormal twist this is definetly a place to check out! I must say 1 day wasnt enough!!!!! SO we are going back and I am gonna book 3 day trip and really get the feeling of the hotel Hopefull this time I can geta Haunted room. :D Yes I am in to this kind of stuff. Stayed here over Thanksgiving and had the hotel mostly for myself-- the manager was friendly and accommodating, a super nice guy.. The room ran a little cold ("cold spot"? ooooo!) and if the famous supernatural residents were present, they didn't seem to care much about me. The room was clean, in good condition, and charming. (One recommendation I would give is that they upgrade the bedspread to a duvet to help with the cold situation!) Thought we'd try this place because of the history. I ordered clam chowder and pasta with meat sauce. The clam chowder had an excess of hot sauce in it. The pasta came with a blob of sauce in the middle. Pasta was cold and chewy. I sent it back to get heated . It came back in a smaller bowl but it was hot. This time the pasta was raw. Decided not to try again cuz I was afraid of what might come back. If you go, stick to a sandwich. But, if you order fries, bring your own catsup. The waiter couldn't seem to find any. I can't speak for the hotel but my boyfriend and I went here for a romantic dinner and was extremely disappointed. First I ordered a Bloody Mary it tasted like tomato soup. The waitress came up and saw I was dissatisfied with it and asked if I wanted to send it back which I did. We then ordered dinner. We got a pasta and a salad. I could've made better food at home the noodles were extremely under cooked we took a few bites and couldn't eat any more. The salad was nothing special. The waitress was very kind and tried to help. A very rustic location. It reminds me of many other turn of the century hotels I have stayed in over the years. The beds were worn but the pillows were fantastic. Old fashioned toilet and unique decorations throughout. The manager ended up putting 4 of us in one room after I had ordered 2 rooms. I read the other reviews regarding this hotel and I'm a bit surprised. I understand certain points of them but not others although this hotel just underwent a change of management I think for the better. I stayed in room #2 and my two friends in #12. We had a fine time in the hotel. In fact, that night, I came down with a nasty case of the flu that I wasn't aware of that morning. Anyway, the girl at the front desk was so nice and brought up food to me from the adjoining restaurant which was good and offered to bring up hot tea, etc free of charge. The room was adorable. Very feminine and I loved the antique furniture. The bed was a little hard but it's a hotel bed...what are you going to do. I even think I had a visit from one of the hotel ghost's (a woman). Either that or I was really delirious from the fever. I thought it was a quaint hotel and I would stay there again, hopefully not sick, etc. The only weird thing was that when I woke up and I was trying to get my friend's room number (I couldn't recall), there was not front desk staff to be had. There was only the housekeeping staff whom didn't speak much English and I didn't speak Spanish so that was difficult. But that's really the only thing. I thought the hotel had character although they should fix some of the outside since that is looking a bit run down. After two fires, I suppose that will do it to a hotel like this. read more

Such a charming hotel! Totally makes you feel like you're on the set of Gone With the Wind as soon as you step inside. Its very unique and well maintained. I wouldn't even give this place a star if I didn't have to. THIS IS A WARNING. Do not go by the pictures that are shown. The management does a 'bate and switch' They take pictures of two rooms that are really nice, but when you there and they give you a room, its a dump. The furniture including the mattresses have to be purchased from a thrift store, the linen is soiled and smelly. I believe they have bed bugs or some kind of bugs, since my family all received red itchy bites after sleeping in the beds. It is the worst place I have ever stayed, and anyone considering this place, please use caution and bring RAID with you. We paid $122.00 for this terrible experience, sleepless bug ridden room. The TV, three channels on a really really old tv. Oh, no coffee, no tea, no water, no amenities, either were provided. But, the cleaning people left an envelope on the counter where someone wrote 'tip' and Thank you. Amazing! read more

I dont have high expectations but this hotel I will never stay here again and I feel i must warn others. I made reservation for 2 room for 7 people. when we arrived a few minutes to 9 pm, the manager on duty told us that the place was sold out and he tried calling us all day to confirm our reservation. He gave our room away, he said he was holding 2 smaller room for us just in case we did show up and at 9 pm he said he was about to give the room to another man that had been waiting to take our room. I was very upset, we told him we had reservation, our phone number on file was our home phone and we where at the lake and wouldn't of been able to receive call. my 5 year old had to sleep with my sister in law with her kids in one room. My room it had a twin bed, I had to sleep on the floor with my 8 month old baby for fear he roll off. I would of packet up and left but near by hotel where all sold out and had no choice but to stay. next day I refused to stay another night at 7 am their was no one at front desk, only 1 house keeper. I told her I want to check out, all she said its fine. I wrote a note for someone to call us back, they never called. My sister in law said they still charged for 2 night. Room are over price, its a old style that i did like but the bed mattress are very old and hard, wifi was weak. i have said my peace, dive a extra 15 min to jackson lodge, for the same price i stayed in a wonderful cabin for $140 and i didnt have to sleep on the floor. read more

We were a bit wary after seeing some of the reviews, but this hotel is not as bad as some of the reviews portray. It is an old historic hotel and could use some updating. But it does have rustic charm. The rooms were basic but clean and for the price not at all bad. It has a very comfortable feel and the owner and staff were friendly and helpful. It needs some TLC (including some better linens and comfier beds) and hopefully it get will get that with time, but I would be comfortable staying here again. I gave it 3 stars because it is not a luxury or chain hotel, so don't have high expectations. One thing to be aware of is that the bar downstairs is very popular and plays loud music, so it is loud on weekends. Ask for a room at the back if that bothers you. Sub-standard cleanliness, safety, upkeep and amenities, VERY over-priced for the conditions.No hot water in AM or PM. Food debris under the bed, stains in carpet, stained and broken bathroom tiles. No central heat, had to huddle under blankets until the room warmed up enough with the space heater for me to take a COLD shower. No kleenex, drinking glasses, coffee makers, or hair dryers available. The seating and tables on both balconeys were filthy, had to dig paper towel out of trash to wipe down. Broken equipment laying around. No manager around after check-in for help. Bar and restaurant shuttered and dusty. SHABBY, not chic!
