Went here for a birthday and it's a great way to celebrate. Atmosphere is okay, nothing special, and the bathroom you want to get in and out of in a hurry. I've seen much better hibachi chefs. These guys are just average and don't seem to be having a lot of fun in their job. Best part is the food of which everything was good. With a first time dining experience which was positive, I would have to return to offer a more final review/opinion. Here's what we ordered: Edamame--we requested it without salt. It was good. Standard. Can't do much wrong with steamed edamame. Vegetable gyoza--spinach translucent steamed veggie filled and delicious. There were 6 to a portion. The rest of our order was from the 50% section: 2 orders of soft shelled crab rolls. These were good. Crunchy with brown sauce drizzled on top. Filling. Broccoli tempura--didnt try this Asparagus tempura --my selection. Rolled on the smaller side but with a nice crunch and delicious. Tiger roll--my selection--with salmon skin and avocado, drizzled with the brown sauce. I thought it was flavorful and good. Shrimp mango roll---i didn't try it but it looked good. Kind of came across this spot by accident. I was on my way to Park Slope to indulge in a slice from Two Boots when to my dismay I discovered that Two Boots isn't open for lunch in the fall (gasp!). Disappointed at my discovery I wandered down 7th Avenue bound for the F train to bring me back to work when I stumbled across Shinju. I scoped out the lunch menu and liked what I saw. $2.50 rolls, $1 pieces of sushi. All along I had no idea that Park Slope had places like that...I only thought they existed in my dreams (or in Bensonhurst, whichever). I did a quick check on Yelp to make certain that nobody died from food poisoning and then ordered up tres rolls. 1) Shrimp & Mango, 2) Spicy White Tuna with Crunchy, and 3) Alaskan (salmon with avocado). Paid just over $8 for my 3 rolls and waited patiently for my order to be ready to go. In less than 10 minutes the waitress had the order in my hands and I was out the door and on my way back to the office. I promptly got to work on my meal. First thing I noticed was the presentation was spot on. Usually they kind of jip you at places where the sushi is half price, but not here. The fish itself actually looked fresh (and smelt fresh too!) and I was salivating within seconds. Favorite roll was the Alaskan roll - the salmon was perfect. I also enjoyed the spicy tuna, except I'm pretty positive it was just regular tuna and not the white tuna that I had ordered. The Shrimp & Mango was interesting, I don't think I've ever had mango in a roll before, but I found the shrimp to be a tad overcooked. Overall I really enjoyed what I had for lunch. The rolls were hefty and I wound up sharing my lunch with my co-worker who agreed with my thoughts, that the sushi was fantastic. Although Shinju is a bit out of my way I can see myself coming back here for take out in the future and maybe even dinner on a night out in the Slope. The salmon was yummy, the tuna was chewy and still a little frozen and the yellowtail was straight up yellow around the edges and generally questionable. All slightly smelly (not good). He laughed us off then neva made the rice. When the serve came back, i told the served there was not enough rice for a table of 8 adults with 3 men & 5 women. The serve & manager offered to make more rice for the table if we agreed to pay $3 each then changed her mind & said $4. The manager explained the chef didn't speak English but he was able to speak to us the entire time we sat in this restaurant. This establishment is very unprofessional and terrible customer service. I wouldn't recommend anyone to come here. It's unfortunate because I love trying new restaurants but this wouldn't be on my list of returns or recommendations. Waste of money. If you're coming to a show at Barclays I recommend getting there early and grabbing sushi here. Shin Ju has a vast menu and fast service. The wait staff couldn't be more pleasant. The special rolls come out fast. We were a party of two and between us we ordered four different rolls. All were pretty solid. We has a chicken pad Thai also. Shin Ju probably won't displace your favorite sushi spot but it beats eating inside the arena and having bar food for about 20% more. We had 4 rolls, Pad Thai and a Kani salad and after tip it came to $72. The place could use a refresh and extensive cleaning. Tables feel a bit sticky but not dirty per se. Probably my favorite sushi delivery spot! They're always quick, call if there's something they need clarification on, and food is on point! I order from here probably once a week. Their fish is pretty fresh and their rolls are inexpensively priced. My go-to's are salmon sashimi, boston roll, spicy salmon roll, fire and hot roll (no scallop, sub salmon). Shrimp tempura and white fish tempura rolls are good as well. Their hibachi fried rice is great too! I also almost always get hot and sour soup (which is veggie!) and seaweed salad. Another unique item they have is call Powerball which is spicy tuna (or salmon if requested) on top of crispy rice. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because a few times the rolls have been smaller than I'd like and the soup isn't as flavorful so sometimes they are inconsistent but let's be real, there's a reason we keep coming back here. As others have mentioned - they have under both Natto and Shinju on Ubereats. We've been in person as well and though many times it's not very packed, the service has been good. I had one of the worst experiences of my life at this restaurant. I learned that the staff at this establishment are both unreasonable and prejudice. This has been my favorite restaurant to go to in Park Slope for 7 years. A friend and I have frequented this sushi spot since our freshman year of high school way before they relocated to 5th Avenue. We've never had any problems with the food or the staff until yesterday. There was a miscommunication while a new waitress took our order. We asked if it was possible for the waitress to take it back and correct the order and she refused. We talked to the manager and she very rudely said the same. She claimed that we ordered the dish and therefore, we had to eat it and pay for it. We attempted to reason with her, but she was set on talking over us, refusing to give us a chance to speak. Just to clarify, we had not touched our dishes, nor were we implying that if we had ate the food we would not pay. The manager was very adamant about us eating and paying for food that we did not want. After realizing that she would not correct the order, we proceeded to get up to leave. The manager blocked the door with her body, and instructed one of her employees to call 911. We asked her to move out of the way and grabbed the handle of the door, but she would not budge. Two other customers in the restaurant reiterated that she could not force us to eat food that we did not want or pay for food that we did not touch. What we experienced was not fair. We could not come up with any other rational reason that we were treated this way other than we were two black women dining at this restaurant. The manager clung onto her prejudices and ran with them, treating us like we were not reasonable customers, but thieves trying to get over on her. It took my friend reaching in her pocket and giving the woman twenty dollars for us to leave the restaurant. Even then, she refused to move away from the door. It was an awful discriminatory act that will stay with the both us when we did absolutely nothing wrong. read more

Delicious sushi after giving birth the first thing I needed was some good sushi. The only good thing if any of having to visit my baby in Nicu was that, good food wasn't hard to find in the area. This place is, my, JAM - $2.50 rolls, $4 beers, and the nicest staff ever. I've eaten here no less than 12 times, and fortunately haven't suffered the torments of previous reviewers. There's really no reason to steer away from the regular rolls: the bbq crunchy roll, spicy tuna, and octopus/crunch/jalapeno do me just fine. Doesn't hurt that there's a huge tv with ESPN on it as well (and let's not forget the 90's jamz!! soothing our inner Mariah. Sorry, exclamation marks and the word jamz (!!) go hand in hand). One of the best restaurants in Park Slope! Not only is it cheap, it's delicious, fresh, and well made! I've eaten here numerous times, several times a week, and Shinju II is always consistently excellent in quality. This is the best half-priced sushi place, better than Manhattan ones for sure. I never miss the expensive $30+ per person (without alcohol) sushi places when you can get a meal for LESS than $10 here and be completely full and content. The waiters are friendly and very accommodating; the decor is excellent for date night. Things are still rather low key, so don't feel like you need to dress up. They have a full bar and pour a decent drink. Hot sake is pretty good and affordable. Cold sake has a decent selection, though it is definitely pricier - my personal favourite is still Otokoyama. It's got a pleasant flavor that doesn't burn at all. Cheapest thing to order for a meal, any time of the day, is 3 rolls. This is usually enough to make a grown man full, and it is less than $10. All the basic sushi/roll things on the menu are great and well crafted....tuna, yellowtail, spicy crunchy roll, tempura...it's all good!! I do think if you dine in (versus takeout), your sushi will be very slightly bigger and better. But take out is still decent, though I'd still recommend even just calling in your order and picking it up yourself. My recommendations: Salmon/Tuna avocado roll - incredibly fresh avocado, very creamy. The salmon is also fresh, well marbled, and melts like butter in your mouth. This is my absolute favorite on the menu, and often I consider ordering 3 rolls of it. Tuna is also good, but I think the salmon ends up being creamier since the cut you get has more fish-fat marbled in than the tuna cut. Spicy crunchy ____ (insert fish name here) roll: all meat choices are great here as well, including yellowtail. Tempura roll: Shrimp and crab are both good and HUGE!!! 2/6 of the pieces you get are bigger than a mouthfull. Fried squid is alright but not the best. Salmon Teriyaki - amazingly done!! They cook this perfectly, with high heat that sears it deliciously crisp on one side. Teriyaki sauce is marinated well in to it, causing the fish to be very flavorful, with a good portion of rice to go with it, and lots and lots of steamed vegetables. Broccoli, carrots, corn on the cob, mushrooms (yum), etc. Then you also get complimentary miso soup or salad with it too. You're guaranteed to be full...I usually ask my boyfriend to help me finish this thing off. Chicken Katsu Curry (lunch time only) - great value for the price; it's like $7-8...along with anything else on the lunch menu! Extremely worth it because the portion is dinner sized! It comes with lots of veggies, and I can't seem to find Chicken Katsu Curry anywhere else in Park Slope. I'd give this meal 3.5 or 4/5 stars. Tonkatsu (Pork): Also good; your standard breaded pork cutlet with katsu sauce on the side. They don't do shaved lettuce like in Japan, but it tastes pretty good. Since it's all meat, I'd recommend you choose a salad instead of soup to go with it! Food you should NOT order: - Any of the Thai dishes - These were recently added sometime this year...and I have no idea why. They don't cook it well at all...if you want Thai food, do yourself a favour and visit an actual Thai restaurant (there's a good one nearby called Nahm). - Gyu-don - This is absolutely NOT prepared the way gyu-don is supposed to be prepared! When this arrived in front of me, it looked like a huge hot mess....literally....seemed to me the chef had no idea what gyu-don was and just whipped something up that contained beef ("gyu") and rice ("don" being rice bowl). Absolutely abysmal. Overall....Shinju II is a great local restaurant in Park Slope. You get a cheap meal with delicious and generous food. Depending on your choices, it's pretty healthy too! Their sushi is amazing and so is the salmon teriyaki....I only caution you to stay away from the Thai foods and the gyu-don. read more

The salmon tartar was mostly chunks of apple (not mentioned on the menu) with a few roughly chopped chunks of oddly pale fish. The rolls were misshapen and looked unappetizing; mushy rice contributed to their grossness. My lychee martini was cloyingly sweet, and the lychees themselves were somewhat beat up, which made them difficult to eat with the plastic sword. Admittedly, I went for lunch when it was slow and the first shift was on. Basically, everything from the sushi to the tempura bento box is pretty standard tasting, if not bland. I did like the eel sushi. The meat was hot, sweet, fatty and had a nice nutty taste, but the rice was cold. The decor is hip; complete with a translucent bar top made out of stone (so the waitress told me) and illuminated by red lighting. MTV was playing on the Hi-Def and I believe Kraftwerk was booming on the iPod. My only question is: where are all the stroller mommies going to park their babies? read more
