Yum! My friend and I used to order from here all the time when she lived nearby. We stopped in for dinner the other day. It's always so nice eating sushi with friends who like the same things as you. We got some tuna, eel, lobster and soft shell crab in our 3 rolls we shared. I also had a Thai ice tea. Solid Japanese food, good quality sushi. My favorite was the Yuzu Ginger yellowtail, but funnily enough I didn't see the sauce in the bag and had it as-is... just the fish alone was very well prepared with bits of roe and lime zest. I tried a bit of the sauce at the end and it was incredible too (I'll try to remember it for next time). The sweetie roll was just okay--I found that the tempura shrimp had an odd flavor and was a bit too thickly battered for my taste. But the mango avocado and salmon on top were good, it needed a nice coating of eel sauce which I added on the side. I liked the famous crispy pancake because you got to try lots of sashimi with shredded mango (so different not in a roll!) and sauce--they mixed the spicy mayo and eel sauce together in the sauce container, I would have preferred them separate because I'm not a huge fan of spicy mayo and only wanted a little. But the dish itself was very different, the pancake was this almost chicharrones texture but in the form of a neutral tasting chip, very interesting. Glad I tried but not sure if I'd order again. I love sushi. In my area, my favorite place where I bought sushi was closed, I decided to find another sushi cafe. My choice fell on Japanese sushi. This is delicious sushi and lychee sake. The place itself isn't much to look at but the staff was super nice and accommodating and looked like a spot that locals frequent. We started off with a kani salad which was delicious - just enough mayo and light. I had a tasty Miso soup with salmon prompts for the merge of the Miso and fish. Then I had the tuna which was sensational I have the flavors in my mouth as I'm writing this review. For the main entree, we had the sashimi and sushi for 2. We were a party of 4 and could not finish it. The portions were massive! Came here for dinner on a whim because I didn't feel like traveling far to get sushi. That is a mistake I won't be making again. Ordered the fried calamari salad, the Kirin roll (soft shell crab, eel and tuna), shrimp and veggie tempura, the monkey roll and eel cucumber roll. The salad was beyond disappointing and disgusting. I couldn't find a single piece of calamari in it and ask the waitress if I had the right order. She told me it was shredded calamari mixed with the carrots that's fried so it's in there even if I don't taste it. So for $10 I had a plate of chopped Roman lettuce with some leftover tempura. If it tasted amazing, I would have still been ok but it was tasteless because there is no dressing that comes with that salad. The shrimp and veggie tempura was borderline ok. The shrimp wasn't properly deveined though and the veggie consisted of 1small piece of broccoli and 1 thin slice of taro. Inflection much? The rolls were ok, nothing special and I honestly didn't feel well after eating the Kirin roll. Wow, this place is mediocre at best. Service is ok but everything is sticky, from their tables to their seats and lastly their floors. Which makes me wonder how clean the place is and if the raw stuff is fresh. Decided to order take-out sushi from Jpan on Saturday afternoon. Too pricey for pretty standard sushi dishes. Quality: After a long night out, wanted to order some sushi to replenish the system. Jpan is the closest spot to my apartment, so decided to check it out. The food was okay, but for the higher prices I don't think it was worth it. I started with the Tuna And Salmon Lunch Platter, which comes with two pieces of tuna sushi, two pieces of salmon sushi and a tuna salmon cucumber roll, along with soup and salad. The lunch special is a decent deal, but I did not like the combo roll and felt the tuna was not very fresh. I also ordered the Crazy Spicy Roll, which was salmon tempura and avocado topped with jalapeno and scallion. It was not something I would order again. The Fire Island Roll, shrimp tempura and avocado topped with spicy tuna, was a good mix of flavor though pricey. Quantity: The lunch special is a good sized meal. The house specialty rolls are quite large, one and a standard roll would be quite filling. Value: $14 for the Tuna And Salmon Lunch Platter. $12.50 for the Crazy Spicy Roll. $14 for the Fire Island Roll. Ambiance: Jpan is located along 5th Avenue in the Park Slope area. It is a relatively small sushi spot with about six tables up front, and a little sushi bar area in the back. I believe they may have an outdoor patio open during warmer months, but since I was just grabbing take-out I stuck near the front. The front area was decorated simple with some bamboo sticks to separate tables and dim red-tinted lighting. There was no music playing while I waited, which I found weird. Crowd: There were two families dining inside and two individuals waiting for take-out orders. It is a fairly casual spot, but definitely set up more for take-out. Service: My take-out order took about fifteen minutes longer than the estimated time. I put in the order close to when they opened, but they need to update their system to be more accurate. My experience at Jpan was amazing. My husband and I were looking for a new sushi spot and we found heaven on earth. The service and hospitality are outstanding. We asked for recommendation from the server, and she did not disappoint us. We tried, the crazy spice roll, monkey roll, sweetie roll, ocean roll, winter roll and fantastic roll. The sushi is fresh and delicious. My husband uses a wheelchair and was unable to get in the front door, they brought out a table and chair so we could dine outside (during the summer). Finally trying out this place per Will C's and Jackie W's reviews and I can see why this place is well recieved. Decor is nice and there's an open area in the back (seems like all restaurants have these "back yards" along 5th Ave). Service was nice, but I don't recall a warm wet nap like most Japanese places provide prior to ordering. The special rolls are what people come here for apparently as they are very tasty - altough I don't think I'm that into the texture. The rolls are following a trend of non-seaweed wrap. Volcano using scallion pancake (awesome), and Ever Green some sort of soy wrap. Inventive and delicious however difficult to pick up/ hold together with a chopstick as it falls appart pretty easily. App 12 bucks for special rolls. I also had a nebayaki don and it was super delicious and a pretty good value since it includes a salad and two pieces of shrimp tempura for 9 bucks. Decent sushi restaurant in downtown Brooklyn. They have a good selection of sushi rolls that are moderately priced for this neighborhood. I came in earlier in the evening and it wasn't too packed, just a few families out for dinner taking their kids to try Japanese food for the first time. For my rolls, I went with the Dragon roll and the Eel & Avocado roll. Both were decent. My main course was a big plate of Vegetable fried rice. This really hit the spot. Anyway, my order was: -1x tuna dumpling -1x Black Sunshine rolle -1x kid's chicken katsu Yes, I really wanted chicken katsu, but it wasn't the lunch menu anymore. But guess what? The kid's portion is also gigantic (comes with shumai and rice). What the hell kind of kids are they feeding? The katsu was good. They cut holes in the box so it doesn't get soggy. The tuna dumpling was the star of the meal. I've had something similar at Kyoto on Smith (theirs has lobster, so it's automatically better). But Jpan's is one gigantic one filled with crab. The tuna "skin" of the dumpling was fresh and delicious. The Black Sunshine roll was fine, but I could've gone with something else. Fresh food and a nice wait staff. Arrived 45 minutes to close to no other customers. They had a large menu and multiple cuts to choose from. They were out of uni that evening, so I opted for salmon sushi and added edamame, yakatori, miso eggplant, Philadelphia roll, salmon and tuna roll, and a special roll. They must have heard me incorrectly because they presented me with tuna sushi instead. But honestly, I didn't mind because their tuna was superb.
