This is the best sushi I have ever had. Though, I should mention I only recently learned to enjoy sushi and have not indulged beyond salmon rolls and haven't yet gained appreciation for raw fish with a bite. Regardless, it's the best salmon roll I've ever had -- buttery with a delicate, fresh flavor wrapped in fragrant rice in perfect proportions. After experiencing the first salmon roll that I could stomach and finally understanding the hype a while ago, I've tried dozens of rolls throughout the city at many price points and this was my favorite experience. It's also relatively very affordable; my meal of a miso cod appetizer (flaky scrumptious simplicity), miso soup, a salmon roll, and green tea cheesecake came to $54 + tip. The service was also excellent. I'm the sort to dine solo with a novel, want to be completely left alone, and not notice the quality of service at all. The waitress provided the feel of an independent experience while also being very attentive, pleasant, and informative. There was an art to her skill that prompted me to observe and note an art to the service I rarely do. The staff was very watchful and reaction; everyone was well cared for. I'm inspired to try something over than a salmon roll. This seems to be the place to do it. I'll also add I was surprised to read the review on them refusing to let a guest take their leftovers home. Tried the Omakon, chef choice 5 shashimi, 6 nigiri and 1 handroll. Overall I loved each round of seafood. They picked the progression perfect. Previously (I think) Michelin starred sushi restaurant - the Brooklyn location is the original, there is an additional in Manhattan. The ambiance here is simple but welcoming. The sushi chefs are all or nearly all Japanese and trained in Japan from what I can tell. They have incredibly affordable options for omakase - we chose the $80 omakase including 6 nigiri, 5 sashimi and 1 hand roll. Met a friend here for dinner last night. We warmed up with some lovely hot sake and then both ordered the omakon (chef's choice of five sashimi, six nigiri, and a handroll). Every single bite was delicious! We sat at the counter, so we got to watch everything being made, and then the sushi chef explained each item to us as he served it. The chef and all of the staff were really nice and friendly, not at all pretentious even though it's quite a pricey place (but worth every penny!). The interior had major wood and bamboo elements. This is the best sushi I've had. The rice was perfectly seasoned and paired nicely with the fish, which were buttery and mild. The hand rolls were wrapped in rich and crispy seaweed with equally buttery tuna. The uni was also a standout, melting away in seconds. First off it was a Sunday night and we didn't have reservations, we just walked in. We really didn't need reservations anyway, they were half full at best. The bar was for Omikase only which we opted out of. We wanted Ala Carte . I had the Red Miso soup and we shared the Ahi neck bone both were delicious. We opted for the mid range 12 pieces of sushi which was stunningly delicious. Unfortunately just not enough for me to be satisfied so I added on a Tuna roll at the end. Oh, just your neighborhood sushi spot that flies fresh fish from Japan on the daily...and closed on Tuesdays. It was a beautiful night in Brooklyn Monday, Eric R.'s and my last night visiting my brother, SIL, and adorable niece. My brother highly recommended we eat here during this trip, and my mom got to have it as takeout when she visited in December. I heard it was really amazing from her, and she is quite picky. We called in advance to make reservations, and were seated outside at a four top with a high chair for my niece. Jeff L. and my SIL recommended the omakase. When I lived in Vegas, some restaurants offered omakase but required a few days' notice (kind of like kaiseki). Here, we just showed up and there were many options. I ordered "open-ended" omakase. The server asked me if I had any allergies or dislikes, which I did not. I thought that was amazing because they would not give anyone something they could not eat or did not want to eat. My brother and SIL ordered the kosher style omakase, since my SIL is allergic to shellfish. Eric R. was skeptical of omakase and chose the "sushi and sashimi dinner" which still was chef's choice with fresh items. We ordered edamame for the table and kanpyo maki for my niece. Eric R. and I got Sapporo, and my brother ordered iced green tea. The edamame came out hot and salted. My niece enjoyed munching on the kanpyo maki, and it was really cute to watch. Eric R. did get three courses, though he was initially concerned because he thought his first plate was the entire meal. His plate was really beautiful, and even though he told the server he did not like a few fishes, he did not mention oyster so he got one and gave it to me! He also had me try his mackerel to make sure it was something he would like (it was) - he was relieved because he does not usually likes saba sushi. Our platter came out, and two of three were the same for all omakase orders. I wish I could remember all of the options, but in the first round they included kinmedai (which was so good I ordered another piece), chutoro and two other pieces. Our second platter included king salmon, hamachi belly with shishito puree, otoro, and one other piece. For my "open-ended" plate which diverged from theirs (I included a photo of their third plate too), I received botan ebi with fried head, Hokkadio uni, seared salmon belly, and one other piece. Eric R. ordered a negitoro handroll, I ordered negihama and salmon skin handrolls, and Jeff L. got a salmon skin handroll and negihama maki. My SIL also ordered several pieces she liked from the omakase, and Eric R. and I both got a kinmedai nigiri to enjoy. We chuckled a bit at the bill because it is not every day that we spend these prices on a meal, but we had a lot to celebrate. We got the omakase but nothing really stood out to me. I felt very rushed by the waiter who I felt was watching me the whole time waiting for me to finish so he could take our plates away. We originally had a 5pm res but we're running late, and the restaurant was very accommodating in letting us push back to 5:30 (and we were still 10 min late). The restaurant is quite small and unassuming, an extended seating area in the back that we were seated at. The tables are pretty close together, enough that I could hear both parties' conversations around us. We started with a miso soup for each of us and a fish appetizer. Came here with family and friends on our NY trip for our first omakase experience. The atmosphere was pleasant but the seating was a bit tight. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. We started with the kinoko, gyoza and shrimp tempura appetizers. The mushroom-soy appetizer was the standout of the group. Very tasty and left me wanting more. The gyoza was similar to others I've tried. The shrimp tempura was perfectly made with a nice light batter. But in the end we were here for the sushi omakase. This came in 4 rounds with 3 pieces the first 3 rounds and and a hand roll to finish it off. The wasabi in the yellow fin tuna roll was a bit strong for me but the other pieces were delicate and tasted great. My standout favorites were the yellowtail, fatty tuna, trout and mackerel. I was very surprised by the Spanish mackerel since I normally find mackerel too fishy but this was really good as well. My least favorite was the uni but this was the first time I had it and it's just not my thing. The fatty tuna roll at the end was a great way to finish the meal. After hearing so much about Sushi Katsuei, I finally stopped in. I was in the area and had reason to celebrate so I treated myself to the $55 sushi omakase. It was four rounds - the first three were 9 pieces of sushi, and the final was a hand roll. I'm not going to remember everything I had - but the highlights were the bluefin tuna, uni, Spanish mackarel, and red snapper. All very fresh, carefully crafted, and beautifully presented. Some of the better sushi I have had in my life. The experience of eating here was great - the waiters were very attentive, they explained the dishes they brought out, they made sake recommendations. They went out of their way to make you feel like you were having a fine dining experience. And the quality of the fish and the rolls was fine dining level! The restaurant is rather small, and actually doesn't look that fancy in terms of the vibe. It is a more casual atmosphere to get a top notch meal. I will say - it is VERY expensive. Whenever a menu has items on it where the price is variable...or the price isn't listed...that's how you know you better brace your wallet. A while back, a friend's birthday dinner brought me here for the first time. We did a la carte and ended up demolishing their uni (sea urchin) inventory!! I've been meaning to go back since and I'm glad that I did. We arrived late noon for lunch and opted for omakase. We sat at the chef's counter and enjoyed a light conversation while watching each piece of delicacy being prepared professionally right in front of us. I've been to a couple places for omakase and this one is more traditional in a no-frills sense in comparison. After our last course was presented in the form of a hand roll, my friend and I each added a piece - he fancied squid and I hearted uni. It's a chill and unpretentious spot for great omakase at a modest price. The place itself is a lot more spacious than its Manhattan counterparts with rather minimalistic and zen decor. Katsuei is a Michelin Guide recommended restaurant, and I can understand the hype though I wasn't particularly wow-ed. I got the $57 sushi omakase, while my bf got the $77 sashimi and sushi omakase. The fish was very fresh and we loved every single bite. With fish flown in from Tokyo, this place has ruined sushi for me. This was my first omakase experience (got the kosher option) with 12 pieces of sashimi. Each piece of fish, especially the ootoro, melted - quicker than butter - almost like a creme brûlée. The chef uses real wasabi, paired with the best toppings and sauces for each fish. My friend Jenni W. proclaimed Sushi Katsuei to have the best value for omakase sushi. While I was a little skeptical, I was also super excited to give it a try. It was located a brisk walk away from her apartment in Brooklyn, which was very convenient. We made a reservation for a late Saturday afternoon lunch and thankfully there was no wait. I decided on the $72 Sashimi and Sushi omakase versus the $52 Sushi omakase, because go big or go home, right? Probably the most expensive lunch I've ever had. But it was worth every penny! We also ordered hot tea to counter the icky weather outside. The meal started with a salad, which was fine - can never have enough veggies. Then came the real winner - a beautiful plate of sashimi - amberjack, tako, Spanish mackerel, medium fatty tuna and a raw oyster. Each bite was perfection. Two pieces of each, aside from the oyster. The server was very attentive, waiting for me to finish my plate before bringing out the next plate of three nigiri - salmon belly, Jack mackerel (aji) and otoro (fatty tuna). Each piece was glistening and fresh and delicious. Finally, he brought a last plate of California uni, Japanese sea bream, and hamachi (yellowtail). And when I thought I was sadly finished with the meal, he brought a fresh tuna hand roll that really capped off the omakase experience. I also can't keep to myself that I also ran into a minor TV celebrity here. I couldn't enjoy my food until he left and I ran after him to say hi. Awesome to see celebrities enjoying the same food that I love. Overall, value and quality and experience added up to a great meal at Sushi Katsuei. Miso Cod: Solid, tasty, well executed. $14 Maguro Avo - Diced tuna, with avocado & fresh wasabi sauce: Lot's of wasabi. Yum. $14 Open style Omakase: 12 pieces of sushi, no appetizers, no dessert, no soup, for $109. Some pieces were great (including the Saba, Hamachi belly, Toro, Chu-toro), but some were over-seared, and/or over-marinated, to the point they were extremely sweet or spicy. The rice itself was good. For $109, this Omakase doesn't justify its cost. -- SERVICE -- For its cost, the service could have been better. The waiter, while knowledgable about the food, wasn't able to explain in a clear manner the difference between the different options in the menu. Additionally, the restaurant does not serve free tap water. Which is a no-no in my book. -- OVERALL -- We enjoyed eating proper sushi after so long, and I think the sushi here is good. Disclaimer: I'm not a big fan of sushi/fish, so it is hard for me to rate this properly, but I would say it is a 5 in terms of quality/service, but 3 for me personally because I just don't have enough background knowledge/experience/interest to care about Omakase. I've only had Omakase once before on our anniversary, and I was a bit underwhelmed (and hungry) at the whole experience. I think for me, I prefer a communal dining area where I can sit, relax, and catch up with my friends/family. Omakase is not the place to do this. With its rules, it feels too restricting to enjoy - no questions asked; no dipping soy sauce; ginger afterwards; use your fingers, etc. I just can't deal. In any event, we went with the sushi Omakase each and round after round, the preparation was careful and executed magnificently. I really enjoyed the whole experience, but again, I was left hungry and a confusion in my stomach to all of the umame, without any of the satiation. I like my nori crisp, not soggy, so this worked out great for us! My yellow tail belly and salmon belly nigiri sushi were sublime! Absolutely fresh and delicious!
