    Wood fired Branzino
    Peter D.

If it seems like it's impossible to get a reservation at every cool, delicious restaurant in this city these days, you should give this little izakaya a try. I haven't loved a meal (and I mean the food, the cocktails, the ambiance) in a non-packed restaurant this much in months, and it's probably only a matter of time before they are packed every night. So make a res, and check it out. We started with cocktails; I rolled with the Just Mai Type because it was hot, and sunny, and I felt like something tropical. It was perfection. Her lychee thing was floral and strong and good, but we both got Just Mai Types going forward because it was that good. The menu is Japanese and while they have all the sushi, I wanted to go with all non-sushi, which sounded far more interesting. We started with the Drunken Garlic Shrimp, and I would gladly have eaten nothing but these for dinner. Amazing flavor. Beautiful presentation. They are head and shell-on, so you get properly messy while eating them, but it was so worth it. In a seafood mood, we also got the softshell crab mazeman and the wood-fired branzino. The mazeman was a nice balance of fried softy and excellent noodles, with tiny threads of chili (that I don't know how they cut) that contrasted with the chunks of jalopeño and set off the entire presentation. It sounds like they usually have a mazeman on the menu, but the softies were just in season. A good choice. The branzino was perfect. A gorgeous whole fish, filleted and flattened out skin-side up with a bit of char in all the right places. They served it with ground turnip that they recommend you add to the ponzu (we did) with a little bit of the chile paste for spice. We devoured every bit of the crispy skin, and every bite of fish except the head and the tail. We added the Addictive Cabbage as a side, and its fermented crunch was a nice complement to the seafood. All in all, an excellent meal. If there was a downside, it was a little bit of delay in the service. She was excellent and super nice, just overwhelmed. It seemed like she was the only server there, but she was definitely doing her best. Hopefully they'll get her some help when this place blows up more.

Great food and reasonable prices. The place was super cute too! Highly recommend! What a gem in the neighborhood

The Matcha Jade Sour alone -- I'm obsessed. Overall, I would say it's 5 star food with 3 star pacing, but maybe it was an off night. I came here for dinner for two on a Saturday night, and I was so impressed by the food and drinks. However, we were served one of the appetizers before drinks, another appetizer right around the time of the drinks, and then had to wait a while (after we had finished appetizers and the roll) for the mazumen to come out. In the time we were waiting, no one checked in to refill our water. It's minor stuff, but the awkwardness of the pacing took away from the meal a bit. Would recommend trying the karaage (we got mushroom) and addictive cabbage. The soft shell crab mazumen was also great (weekend special). Loved the ambiance in here, especially the live music.

Our first time at Cotra tonight was a great experience. Above all, the sushi is some of the best we've had in the neighborhood, with super fresh fish in generous amounts; the addition of quinoa and chia to the sushi rice also gives them an unexpected and cool extra level of flavor. The extensive selection of really interesting cocktails is great as well (the matcha one with bright lemon and ginger). A tip: the restaurant's carryout/delivery menu is different from sit-in (I got confused about this and the staff very kindly accommodated an off menu item for me as a courtesy!) And a side plus: in a world w so many horribly uncomfortable restaurant chairs, the chairs here are actually comfortable!!

Great service, friendly staff. The food is high quality and very tasty. Everything is presented well and of high class. The interior gives a very date night vibes, low light, trendy, and not loud. What a lovely bar they have and clearly the bartender knows what he's doing because the drinks are exquisite. Happy hour special is a great deal too. I will be back for sure

A mix of rolls. Not sure which ones.

My friends and I visited Cotra on my birthday back in November 2024. Service was okay. Waiter wasn't rude, he just seemed indifferent and inattentive. Asked him to bring me a drink that was not too strong or too sweet and he brought an old fashioned. Needless to say it was way too strong. Had to order a ginger beer to balance it out and he initially declined to bring me a can. The bartender eventually brought a can tho. The fried chicken was tasty. However, they brought all our rolls out together on one plate. We did not like that and the waiter was not accommodating. I forgot his name. AA male, light-skinned, glasses (I think) and locs in his hair. My spicy tuna roll was cool. My friends didn't care much for their rolls. Place has potential but not sure I'd return. Also way smaller in person than in photos.

My review would be closer to 3.5 stars. It may be that a lot of these dishes I was trying for the first time, but I was not really amazed by anything.

I've now been to Cotra 2x and I loved my first experience there which was birthday dinner with my husband over the summer and I just recently went back with two girlfriends for a girls night out and it was even better the second time! Short review: excellent, creative, delicious food, fair pricing, amazing cocktails, inviting decor and ambiance and attentive, kind, non-annoying service = the perfect night out! My first visit was with my meat-loving husband and second visit was with a vegetarian and a vegan (who will cheat somewhat and eat vegetarian at restaurants). Cotra has a varied enough menu that it can please everyone! With my veggie ladies, we had the deep fried king oyster mushrooms, yuzu cured olives, (my favorite) the most delicious potatoes you've ever eaten that can be made vegetarian by leaving off the fish flakes (we got them on the side so I could still enjoy!), both salads (Caesar and fennel), addictive cabbage, the best edamame I've ever had, and I had the Goma Kanpachi sashimi for myself and they each had a veggie sushi roll. It was a ton of food and we ate everything and even got a second order of both edamame and fried mushrooms! On both visits I had the Porco Rosso mezcal cocktail since I enjoyed it so much the first time! Since the three of us hadn't gotten together in a while we really lingered over our dinner and were not rushed. The restaurant was busy enough for it to feel happening but not so packed that you can't get a reservation fairly easily. This is definitely my new favorite Asian restaurant in the area. I would go back very regularly if I still lived in the neighborhood!

My husband had the kaishin don, I had the Ozakaya donburi set and our girls shared the shoyu tonkatsu ramen. The fish was so incredibly fresh here and the rice was seasoned perfectly. My donburi set also came with dashi broth that the waitress later brought over to pour on top of the leftover rice in my bowl to be enjoyed at the end of the meal. The broth and rice combination was really comforting and satisfying. This dish was something I wanted to try in Japan but did not get a chance to experience when there, so I was excited to try it at Ozakaya. I was really pleasantly surprised by the ramen here as well. Although the pork could have been better/more tender, the broth was rich and seasoned so well and not too salty like other places. Last but not least, the service here was excellent and efficient. I would definitely come back here the next time I visit Brooklyn as there were many dishes on the menu I wanted to try!

For our food we ordered the hako sushi, tornado omelette fried rice, trio tuna sushi roll, yakitori platter (ordered chicken gizzard and gyu harami on the side) and the A5 Wagyu cooked on the stone grill. I recommend getting the yakitori platter as it's a nice sampler but my husband especially enjoyed the chicken gizzard. My dad never had wagyu before so he especially loved the wagyu but I do think it's expensive for the amount they give you, I can see why it's pricier but just know before you order it's like $45 for 2.5 oz or in our case about 5 thin slices of wagyu. My brother said the tornado omelette was tasty and filling and he enjoyed it. The trio tuna sushi roll was very fresh. As for the service, I think everyone was pleasant but the vibes were a little off, it seems like they were just very exhausted. This doesn't affect the quality of the food or the experience but it was just something I noticed. They were still very attentive and provided great service. The reason for the one star off is because I do wish the Hako sushi had a bit more flavor, I saw so many different ingredients and fish but none of the flavors were impactful, it was rather one dimensional which was disappointing because it was presented so beautifully. Overall, I recommend giving Izakaya nana a try and I would definitely go again to try other things.

Even before the food arrives, the restaurant leaves a strong impression with its stunning Japanese-inspired interior. The space is beautifully designed, blending warmth and elegance in a way that feels both inviting and refined. From the soft lighting to the natural wood accents and thoughtfully arranged decor, everything about the atmosphere feels intentional. It captures the intimate charm of a traditional izakaya while still feeling modern and stylish, making it a wonderful setting for anything from a casual dinner to a more special night out. The food more than lived up to the beauty of the space. One of the first highlights was the salmon onigiri, a dish that proved how satisfying simplicity can be when it is done well. The rice was soft, fresh, and perfectly formed, holding together without feeling too compact, while the salmon added a savory richness that made each bite feel comforting and flavorful. It was balanced, delicate, and deeply satisfying in a way that made it memorable despite its simplicity. The seared salmon salad was another standout. The salmon itself was beautifully prepared, with a lightly seared exterior that gave it a subtle crispness, while the inside remained tender, buttery, and smooth. That contrast in texture made the dish especially enjoyable. Paired with the freshness of the salad, it felt light and refreshing, yet still substantial enough to feel like more than just a side dish. It was a dish that managed to feel both clean and indulgent at the same time. The grilled squid was particularly impressive and easily one of the most memorable items of the meal. Squid can often be difficult to get right, as it can become rubbery or overly chewy if even slightly overcooked, but that was absolutely not the case here. The texture was spectacular--tender, delicate, and pleasantly springy without any toughness. Each bite had a light smokiness from the grill that added depth, while the squid itself retained its natural sweetness. It was expertly prepared and showcased a level of precision that really stood out. For the main courses, both the Tonkatsu Ramen and the Black Pepper Ramen delivered distinct experiences, each with its own appeal. The Tonkatsu Ramen was deeply comforting and satisfying, with a broth that had a rich, velvety texture and a full-bodied depth that coated the palate beautifully. It felt smooth, hearty, and luxurious without being too heavy. The noodles had an ideal texture as well--firm enough to provide a satisfying bite, yet soft enough to soak up the broth and integrate perfectly into the dish. Altogether, it was a bowl that felt warming, balanced, and incredibly comforting. The Black Pepper Ramen, on the other hand, brought a bolder and more assertive flavor profile. The broth had a smooth, glossy texture, and the noodles again had a pleasing chew that gave the dish structure and substance. The black pepper added an unmistakable warmth and aromatic intensity that made the ramen stand out immediately. It was flavorful and memorable, though the pepper was slightly overwhelming at times. A bit less black pepper would have allowed the other flavors in the broth to come through more clearly and created a more balanced bowl. Even so, the ramen was still enjoyable, especially for those who appreciate strong, pepper-forward flavors. Overall, Izakaya Fuku is a restaurant that succeeds on every level. The stunning Japanese interior creates an atmosphere that feels both immersive and elegant, while the food reflects a real attention to detail in both flavor and texture. From the comforting salmon onigiri, to the fresh and beautifully prepared seared salmon salad, to the expertly grilled squid with its exceptional texture, and finally the rich and satisfying ramen dishes, every part of the meal felt carefully executed. It is a place that offers not just excellent food, but a complete dining experience, and it is well worth visiting for anyone looking for standout Japanese cuisine in New York.
