Pulled pork quesadilla and hatched chili Mac
    Christina B.

OK, getting a drivers license in Texas right now is crazy, I had to wait two months and drive out to Tolar, to get one... Next-door was this amazing barbecue place, everyone at the DPS office was talking about it and they couldn't quit raving about their patty melts. After Smelling them, while waiting in the queue, I had to go get something. I walked into Hill city chophouse. Outback, they have wood grills running and the smell was making me drool for hours. When I walked in, I didn't see Patti melt on the menu so I ended up ordering a quesadilla with pulled pork. It was damn tasty, they are very generous with the meat and the meat was succulent. I also got a side of their hatch, macaroni and cheese because I wanted to try it. I have to say the quesadilla was perfect, their green tea sauce has a little cake to it, and it was a perfect accompaniment. The hatch mac & cheese was a little light on flavor, but when you mix it in some of the tomatillos stuff it kicked butt. The only letdown I had there was the beans, they're just wasn't a depth of flavor to them, and there were so much other good food. I didn't want to waste space while sitting there eating my quesadilla. Someone came in in order to Patti and I went you can get one... The Grill master/owner came out to talk to his friend and I mentioned I wanted to try the patty melt and so he whipped me one up... It was to die. Totally worth all the hype, it was juicy and it had lots of good pepper in it. The cheese was perfectly melted, and bread was crispy and buttery and perfect. I put half my quesadillas away most of the patty melt. While sitting there I was talking to his friend and Grimm and he discussed his smoked turkey but they were out, so now I have to drive all the way back to Tolar to try the turkey cause it is totally worth it. I highly recommend taking a trip just to eat. By the way, the people there are super sweet, and couldn't be nicer. So when you're in Tolar next to Granbury, stop by and say hi.

3 meats- sausage, brisket and pulled pork 3 sides- macaroni (regular), slaw and beans Bread pudding

First time trying here and it was very good! Staff was super friendly and the food came out fast! My husband and I shared the 3 meat and 2 sides platter (which was way more than enough) we had so much leftovers. We got shredded pork, brisket and sausage. The brisket and sausage were so so good! The pork was just ok (in my opinion). We got the beans, regular Mac and coleslaw. Everyone raved about the coleslaw, personally it wasn't my favorite. I enjoy the sweet type of slaw and this was not sweet at all. The macaroni was so so good! Also the beans were spicy and great as well. We'd order those again. My husband got the bread pudding and it said it was fantastic. This place is definitely a good bbq place and we will go back

    Very clean bathrooms!

Guy, y'all have to eat here!!! Personally, I rank this BBQ as some of the best I've ever had! As soon as you walk in, you're created by very friendly staff. Get in line to order your food, and you're met with the great staff. My husband and I got a three meat, two side plate to split, and we still had left overs to take home! Each meat is 1/2 pound, and the sides are huge. I cannot believe the amount of food you get for their prices! Jalepeno Cheddar sausage : Soooo good! Very juicy, the cheese oozes out with just a hint of jalepeno. Ribs: I am not a fan of ribs in general, but I would eat a whole rack of these ribs as they are so tender and fall off the bone. Turkey: Smokey and peppery, while remaining juicy. Very good flavor. Sides: Tator salad: Mustered base, and good. Nothing special, but definitely very good. Slaw: EXCELLENT! Only open Thursday-Sunday from 11a-2p. Met some family from Stephenville here, and they said they found a new spot to keep going back too. About a 20 minute drive from Stephenville and about an hour from Fort Worth. We will absolutely be back. Well done, y'all!

Three meat plate with sliced brisket, turkey breast, waygu jalapeño sausage with basic Mac and cheese and borracho beans.

We're always checking out new Texas BBQ places. We saw this on the Texas Monthly up and coming bbq places and decided to check it out. The brisket was thick, juicy slices that melted in your mouth. The turkey breast had great flavor with the pepper rub. The stand out for us was the waygu jalapeño sausage. Great snap and extra cheesy! It has some kick, but wasn't too hot. The sides were good but not great, but still wouldn't be surprised to see this on Texas Monthly's Top 50 next year. Would definitely make the stop again.

2 meat plate: ribs, jalapeño cheddar sausage, potato salad & slaw.

This restaurant has wonderful space--they have indoor seating and then a separate, HUGE pavilion. We opted for the pavilion because it is dog-friendly. It was perfect--multiple TVs, long bench-style tables for parties of all sizes, a stage for live music, a small bar area, and outside of it, pickleball courts! To eat, I ordered some "Mozzarella Cheese sticks," a "Brisket Sandwich," and a side of "Mac and Cheese." The cheese sticks came out fresh with cheese melted and dangling with every bite as it should. The brisket in the sandwich was moist and tender and the Mac and cheese was also very flavorful and delicious. I topped it off with some sweet tea. The cherry on top for us was the wonderful customer service--a manager/owner came out and spoke with us, asked where we were from and thanked us for coming by. Great hospitality. We had an amazing experience here and would recommend Massey's to anyone!! Can't wait to come back whenever we're in town.

We really enjoy good BBQ. We were not disappointed! Massey's is located on the highway between Glen Rose and Granbury, adjacent to the golf course. The building is decorated with pages that kids colored. There's an arcade. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. The live music takes place in the outdoor seating area. I ordered the Massey Mess with pulled pork. It's a frito pie with delicious BBQ. The serving is massive. My wife had the loaded baked potato with brisket. She couldn't finish hers either. Both dishes were delicious. The meat was tender and full of flavor. All the ingredients were fresh. The service just couldn't be beat, beginning with the owner. Todd Massey himself greeted us as we came in and gave us a warm welcome. He answered all our questions about the menu. How often does THAT happen? The serving staff is sweet, friendly, and attentive. We never had to wait. They brought our food to us and checked on us often. Free refills on drinks. The music venue is very family friendly and roomy. There are fans on the perimeter and ceiling fans to keep everyone comfortable. The lighting was great and the sound of the band was too. There are ample clean bathtrooms. We sat there on a Saturday evening eating delicous BBQ and listening to good music. There were kids playing in the grassy area behind the pavillion. Couples got up and danced to their favorite songs. There was a nice breeze blowing. In the distance you can see the golf course. Folks, it just doesn't get much better than this. Mr. Massey even made sure we had a good time and thanked us for coming as we left.

It's a bit of a drive from Granbury, but 100% worth it for consistently great Texas BBQ. The meats are always smoked perfectly with excellent flavor and tenderness, we love loading up on brisket, ribs, sausage, and whatever else looks good that day. We've dined in multiple times and also ordered big family plates to bring home for parties, holidays, and events. Everything travels well and still tastes fresh & huge hit with our whole crew. The sides are homemade and solid (the mac & cheese and potato salad get mentioned a lot in our house), and the portions are generous for the price. The rustic, down-home Texas atmosphere is part of the charm, friendly service, plenty of parking, and fun shops nearby (like the giant rocking chair spot). It feels like true Texas Hill Country hospitality. Whether you're stopping in for a quick lunch or catering a gathering, this place delivers "Dang Good BBQ" every visit. If you're anywhere near Lipan or Hwy 281, make the drive. You won't regret it we keep coming back and bringing friends/family with us!

We bought two meat plates and the BBQ potato. The potato was by far the best meal of the day. Nailed it. Portion sizes were great overall! The meat plate BBQ was alright. The issue we had was with the sides. I had mac and cheese and the potato salad. I will say, everything felt and tasted homemade. However, I feel like the chef is trying a little too hard to get authentic flavors. Let the BBQ be the star and give us some old-fashioned mustard potato salad and normal mac. Both of my sides tasted strange. They had a weird aftertaste, kind of sour or old, not sure. I never throw out food, but I didn't take the leftovers with me. My last critique is the actual BBQ sauce. It also tasted original and homemade but seemed to be trying too hard to be different. It almost felt like a tangy, sweet salsa or puree. Keep it simple, or perhaps offer choices between a general sweet traditional BBQ sauce and your homemade version. Giving it 4 stars until we visit and try again.

The place wasn't very crowded so got seated quickly. Ordered drinks and a few appetizers. Got the Coyote Balls and the chips with queso and salsa. Coyote Balls were excellent but the chips with queso and salsa were just ok. Got a lot of tortilla chips but look like got the bottom of the bag or someone used the bag of chips for a punching bag. Not very many whole chips. Then came time to order and one of us ordered ribs and were told the ribs had sold out and that all the bbq except the sausage was sold out. That's what we went for so would have been nice to know when we're seated that they were out of bbq. I get it, and know a lot of bbq places run out before end of the day. But most other places let customers know before being seated or at least when taking drink orders. So we had to shift gears and find something else. Wife and I shared a Chicken Fried Steak with Cole slaw and fries. Chicken fried steak was very large and didn't have a lot of breading and was ok. Slaw was ok and the fries were good. It's still the same thing eclectic Loco Coyote with the rustic Texas type decor. The troughs in the men's bathroom have wooden dividers between them now. Maybe just an off day or got there at a bad time. I'll give it a try again one of these days when in the area. Hopefully will have a better review next time. But for now sticking by my 3 stars.

Is this up there with the great bbq places in the state? No. It's not trying to be. Hint hint daynes. Its a cafeteria style, you pick your meal, you go down the line, pick you sides and sauces..and your done. We had the three meat plate, and brisket sandwich plate. The meats on the plate were brisket, jalapeño sausage, and turkey. The sides on both plates were spicy pinto beans, Mac, and green beans. We had regular and spicy bbq. All the meats were good to great. The brisket was good, but missing that bark we like. The turkey was not dry. The best thing here, is when they say spicy, they mean spicy. Like runny nose spicy. Man it was good. The spicy bbq sauce was especially great. So just be careful because the beans were bordering on too spicy. The sausage was what daynes wished it could be. I know I keep ragging on daynes, but come here first, then go there and tell me if daynes belongs on any top list! I would pick still smoking any day! The Mac was delicious. The green beans were out of this world. Why not a 5? Well let's be honest, once you tried the true best in the state, it's hard to live up to it! As great as this place is, it's not snows or franklins or burnt bean epic. We still will definitely stop by when travel again!
