Love this place. Every time I've gone the staff has been super knowledgeable and helpful. I always walk away having learned something new. Good selection of plants. The main drawback is that since they spend time talking to/advising each customer, it's a slow process getting someone's attention or getting through the checkout lines. I came here a little concerned about the negative review that had been previously written. I was looking to buy six plants for my apartment, and they would all have different light exposures, and more importantly, I was going to need help! I went on a Saturday morning and there was one person working there. He was patient and helpful in dealing with my wife and I as we discussed different options, explained our needs, changed our minds a few times and asked questions. He was also helping other customers at the same time. I have to admit I was hoping for a wider selection, but at the end of the day we found great things so I'm happy. Horrible customer service, I've been here two or three times- purchased maybe twice, never been asked if I needed help. When I asked questions of the staff, they were dismissive and not helpful. I live in Boerum Hill and I've been shopping here for about 2 years now. They have a good selection of vegetable seeds and very reasonably priced dirt (especially compared to some of the garden shops on Atlantic Ave. - pffft). All the plants I've gotten from here have thrived. It's true that the manager isn't like, over-the-top friendly, but I actually prefer the more straightforward kind of service as opposed to the fakey-smiley kind. They're smart, they're stocked and they're real. The soil price and selection is very good, as far as the outdoor variety is concerned. The plants are a little pricey, but the quality is very good, based on what I saw today. They're an honest to goodness organic gardening supply house, which is pretty hard to find in Brooklyn. Love the casual vibe of this place. It's partially outdoors and indoors with most of the products such as sprays, fertilizers, nutrients indoors. The bigger plants are outdoors with a few flowers curbside. It is not the biggest garden supply store. I am not looking for a home depot or anything but if it is smaller I would expect something more specialized like organic supplies, exotic plants, etc. I guess it is mainly organic supplies but not such a large selection as far as plants go. I would stop in here for a quick re-up on soil and ground supplies but the plants/seeds themselves I won't expect to find here. Nice, hands off service as well. Not too invasive but willing to help. I wish I could give a higher rating as the service when we first bought our fiddle leaf fig here was lovely. However, since arriving home our tree has been sick (Despite us following the care instructions exactly and repotting our plant with soil purchased here). We discovered a couple days ago the soil seems to be infested with what appears to be millipedes. We went back to the store and showed the woman at the counter photos and she suggested we buy Neem oil. However, we did not want to spend more money here after having been sold a sick tree. and wish we could have been offered a better solution. read more

I love this place! It's three blocks from my home, and I've been shopping here since it opened. The owner is always calm and helpful, even though he works his *ss off most days of the week, not only running the store, but working on landscaping projects at customers' homes. The plants are always healthy, and the ones I've bought there have flourished. I'd rather spend my money here, and support a local, black-owned business where I get personal service and learn more about gardening each time, than at a large chain store. I have been going to this place for several years- I've usuallly bought my plants from Joel- who is cool af, knowledgeable about the plants there, will take his time to answer questions a customer might have and is down to earth. HOWEVER- I had a really shitty experience here today. there was a white british lady working the counter was rolling her eyes at me before even speaking a word. You really have to try to be that disrespectful, unnecessarily mean and taking it out on the customers. She was rude as hell when I asked a basic question about the plant I wanted to buy- her response was "WHO DO YOU THINK I AM?!! GOD ?! " I was really taken aback, flustered and was extremely confused. I asked a question about the plant I wanted to buy... because she works in this store... and it happens to be a nursery ... where they sell plants.... I suspected she might be having a bad day. My response was that I didn't mean any disrespect with my question and told her I assumed I could ask her a question because she works there.... I asked her if she was ok and then she told me she was in a shitty mood and blamed it on her boss " because HE is here..." i was met with more of the same bs but continued with my purchase despite the worst/ rudest customer service. I told her that I hope her day gets better despite the terrible encounter and was met with another rude eye roll. I'm not one to write shitty reviews just to blow off steam. I am writing this hoping the owners/management are able to re-evaluate their staff - you really have to try to be that mean and nasty. If I need a plant, I'm calling beforehand to make sure I don't have to interact with her again. p.s. when I got home, my small plant was all fucked up and wouldn't be surprised if she crushed it on purpose based on this encounter. read more

I wanted to like this funky plant shop, but I went one day and got a price quote on several bags of soil, then went back the next day with the means to transport the soil... only to be told a new, higher price by the same person. Quite honestly, I was excited to come to Natty Garden to pick up some herbs, and tomato plants for the upcoming growing season. I was somewhat pleased with the selection of tomato varieties, and was fine with the 3/4 bags of potting soil available... but was very dissatisfied with the service (or lack thereof). I rarely complain about service, but the man working here today was not only ignoring the three people awaiting checkout (he was too busy watering plants to step away for a moment)... but also asked the customers in front of me about the price of an item and then told them it was incorrect (that it was actually higher)-- he then told them that the credit card machine wasn't working after taking payment moments before. Had a pretty frustrating experience today at Natty Garden. Went in to buy a cactus and everyone I picked up the sales person would say, "oh that one's not for sale." Why put them on she shelf if they're not for sale?! And all the ones that were for sale were pretty sad looking. Will not be going back here again. read more

If I could make a suggestion, I'd suggest that they get a more modern system for ringing people up. When it's busy, the checkout line can be quite long and slow. This review is for customer service -- or the depraved lack thereof. You know that planning thing you do sometimes when your time is very short but you need something very specific that you think might be available at a location that is very inconvenient to you? You know ... you phone ahead of time to see if they have that very specific item in stock before you spend time and energy getting there and back? THAT! This very common planning strategy can work quite well, unless the person on the merchant end is too lazy to even check inventory and just responds in the affirmative. Who cares if a potential customer is inconvenienced? I called Natty Garden yesterday to ask if they had pine bark nuggets in stock. I need a very coarse ground cover/mulch. The young woman on the phone assured me that they did indeed have it in stock. I was thrilled because nearly everyone else in the area seems to be out of stock. I can't finish the last planting in my garden without this stuff to discourage some local critters from using the beds as a litter box. And I need to get this stuff all done before leaving town tomorrow. "Great", I thought to myself, "I can plan the rest of my garden and get this done today." So I walked over there early this afternoon, having scheduled my entire day around getting this stuff. It was a nice day so the 40 minute walk seemed like a good idea, and I had a car ordered in advance to get me and my new bags of pine bark back from Natty Garden to my home. I went inside to ask about it, and young woman behind the counter smiled and asked "You called, right?". Right. I did call. That was me. We went outside to the soil/mulch/compost area, about 16 paces, only to find that they didn't have it after all. The young woman now told me that maybe because it was on order she had mistakenly thought that it was in stock. She assured me that they had some in stock previously. I called in advance to inquire if this particular product was in stock NOW. That's why I asked "Do you have this in stock now?" Why would I care if you have it on order if I'm asking if you have it in stock NOW? Why would I care if you had it previously when I ask whether or not you have it in stock NOW? You would have had to walk approximately 16 paces to check inventory when I called, yet somehow that was too much to ask. Thanks for really screwing up my day today, Natty Garden. I did manage to find what I needed at Botanica Garden Center on Atlantic Avenue. I called ahead. They understood about what I was asking, told me what grades of the product that they had in stock, sold it to me and helped me pack it into a car to cart it all home. I wanted to really like this neighborhood spot. But I can't say anything good unfortunately. I waited almost half an hour as the guy at the register was pretty busy. When he eventually had time to talk to me he just told me to read the various signs for more information. The bigger plants have the prices on the bottom and were barely legible. When you go to Home Depot or the big box stores there is usually no one available to help. If I am going to spend money, I want to go to a place where I can get knowledgeable advice. The location is super convenient, they generally have what I need (and actually told me to go somewhere else, rather than settling for what they had), and the guy that I've spoken to seems to genuinely care about plants. I buy all of my plants at Natty Garden. There is a great selection and there are new plants coming in all the time. The owner is very helpful. I had a lot of questions about what types of plants to buy based on the sun exposure in apartment. He helped me select the right type of low light plants and guided me in what type of soil and pots to buy. All of the plants are doing very well. He is also very kind to his return customers. If you are looking to work on a garden or indoor plants and care for them over time, this is the best place to go for purchasing your plants and everything you will need to maintain them. read more

I've been here a couple times--once to buy a plant, and again to pick up some potting soil. It's a great little nursery, with stands of healthy seedlings outside and a good selection of established plants and baby trees/shrubs. The only reason I'm giving this place four stars instead of five is because the second time I dropped in, they were unofficially closed even though it was the middle of the afternoon. The front gate was locked but I caught the attention of a guy standing in the yard, and after explaining my situation--precious tomato plants getting rootbound! walked a mile and a half with a granny cart!--he let me in and helped me load up my cart with bags of great organic soil. He was kind of incredulous that I bothered to come out in the rain, which was why he'd locked the place up. But he was super friendly and helpful, asking me questions about my setup and giving me some gardening tips. Thanks guy! Next time it's raining on my free day, I'll call first! The organic potting soil I bought was almost 7 bucks for 16 quarts, a great price considering it was mixed with compost and natural fertilizer (25-10-10) and locally sourced too (from Long Island). They usually sell cheaper soil without fertilizer too, about 4 bucks for the same size bag, but they were out the day I went. The guy said they'd probably restock the cheaper stuff the next day though, so you might be luckier than I was on that score. The plant I bought earlier is doing well on a shady windowsill, as promised. Can't wait to see if the wildflower seeds I bought come up; I thought it might be kind of late to start these now, but the guy said it should be fine and the info on the inside of the packet backs him up. Someone else mentioned that they don't take cards, but they took my debit card with no problems. They also recycle those plastic plant containers; I think they're free since the guy offered them up (they had a bin filled with various sizes) but not sure about that. Worth asking! read more

He gets only the healthiest - all my ivy is growing like crazy, my magnolia tree even looks like it will bloom, and if you're really nice and flexible, he'll even find a way to deliver stuff for you. If you want service, but not servile, then Natty Garden is a flowerbed of equality. I've bought my Christmas tree from Joel for 7 years in a row, and always received a good tree at a decent price. I've picked up house plants and community news. I'm glad not to have the kind of ingratiating, 'fixed smile' service that you'd receive at Home Depot, where there are punishments for being real. I love Natty Garden. Joel built cedar beds for my tomatoes and herbs and they are beautiful, he helped install them, too and their price for organic soil is very reasonable. Sometimes service is a little slow, but it's just because they don't have enough workers so if you can be patient, you will enjoy this wonderful store and get lots of cool-ass plants here and not have to go a big chain store. read more

I live on the block, and I've seen this place grow tremendously. I think this plant shop is great. The main guy is a little reserved, but is a very nice guy. The workers on the other hand, one female in particular is a bit...blah, but I don't care about that. I still have plants growing and coming back after the season. This place is a way better investment than Lowes, or Home Depot, you get good healthy plants and support local business. I recommend this place, and support it fully. read more

Nasty Garden! When Natty Garden moved into Prospect Heights I was nothing short of thrilled. An adorable nursery within a short walk of my home. On top of great plants they play great music, and had great treats in the summer...pickled mango, tamarind balls, sugarcane, and fresh coconuts! I began to buy all my plants and plant needs there in addition to all the delicious treats. Then I spread the word to friends, friends of friends, and perfect strangers....singing the praises of this wonderful place. This is where the story takes a turn for the worst. I felt from the beginning that Joel had a chip on his shoulder...but i gave him the benefit of the doubt. I would say hello as i passed by...and would get a snarl as a response. Over the past year or so he has become progressively bitter and cold. Whether it is just his general nasty attitude or an actual encounter....ie changing the price on something after ringing me up for it, or condescendingly questioning whether what i have asked for is actually what I want (umm yes i am sure i want potting soil)....he is just genuinely the nastiest person I have encountered in a long time. Until now I have kept it to myself.....until now. This past weekend I was at a BBQ where people were talking about their terrible Joel experiences. Stories of unprovoked rudeness & bigotry...I decided enough is enough. Someone put that boy in his place! I will say that I think everyone else who works there is quite nice...but knowing that any money they make goes to Joel's wallet makes me sick. I will never shop there again and you can be sure that with the same passion that I spread the word of the wonderful Natty Garden... It's a neighborhood establishment. Having said that we moved here only a year ago but this nursery sets up a nice vibe for this neighborhood. The owner is busy and is full of good useful tips. I haven't found his other employees very helpful. So best to go to the store on quieter days. had a great experience: i emailed asking about delivery and got some useful answers, then came down to the store to pick out some soil. Joel, the owner, was really nice and helpful with recommendations for my small garden that made sense for me, not trying to upsell me on the more expensive options. prices were super reasonable: a bag of organic soil was about the same as a bag of regular soil most other places. then, when i was trying to figure out a time for delivery, joel said since i live just a few blocks away, he could just do it himself right then. For a few extra bucks, he brought all my soil right to my door. I didn't get anything but soil, but their other plants, indoor and outdoor, looked nice too. will definitely be coming back read more
