My favorite Thai restaurants in Hilo. It's a hole in the wall but the food that comes out of the kitchen is nothing short of heaven.

It was just ok. The food was ok, and the price was ok. Just like a usual thai restaurant. There was no air-conditioner and the ventilation was not good. So if you are going there in Sep and dine at noon, it gets quite hot inside. Parking is street parking and convenient. But I feel it is not a very safe neighborhood, so do not leave any belongs in your car. Nothing was impressive but nothing went wrong. read more

If I had to picture the worst restaurant experience ever, this would pretty much be it. We walked in as a group of 7 but was forced to divide the group into 2 parties, of 3 and 4, and sit at opposite sides of the restaurant. We were "greeted" by a nasty hostess which literally spewed unhappiness and attitude. If you work in any service, no matter how big or small... put a smile on and be nice to your customers (or just be fake nice!) Long story short is the food is good (not great but good), the service was atrocious. Not coming back here. read more

Loved this place! My daughter found it on Yelp, so we gave it a try, and so happy we did. The Pineapple Fried Rice w/ Chicken & Shrimp was delicious. My daughter got the Massaman Curry (this will be my go-to next time!), and my dad got the Garlic Stir Fry w/ Beef. All of it was amazing, as were the Spring Rolls appetizer. The Thai Tea was incredible, worth the trip for that alone. We had the tapioca for dessert, and it was perfect. My daughter is Vegan, and was thrilled that they had so many options for her. The food is not bad, tasted like Thai food. But don't try the spicy. It's super spicy even I only order medium spicy. My stomach still feel terrible next day morning. The service is disaster. The waiter only come to my table twice. The first time is to order, 20mins after I sit down. And second is deliver dishes, 45mins after order, even I only order a curry. read more

absolutely loved it here! tasty quick service and the lady (I am assuming shes the owner??) is super nice and friendly :) I really enjoyed the light - yet super tasty flavor the pad thai and red curry had- I also really appreciated that the food was not greasy sometimes you eat thai and you feel like you have eaten WAY too much after only a few bites and this was not one of those times. with great portion sizes you will easily feel satisfied after enjoying a dish here. This Pad Thai looked great but tasted bitter, watery, and flavorless. The chicken was thick and had strange texture. They gave lots of veggies but they were undercooked and they didn't give any lime/lemon or peanuts. I've been going to all the Thai restaurants from Hilo to Pahoa to try out Pad Thai my favorite dish and so far this has been the worst. I don't like putting negative reviews and I know everyone's struggling right now but that includes the customers like myself who when finally have the funds to treat themselves to a restaurant want the food to be worth the money. In this case the food was not worth the sub-par customer service over the phone, the street parking, or my hard earned money. Definitely the best Thai food in Hilo! Best ambiance and best food in town, period. The food is fresh and authentic, and thet'll spice it up as hot as you like! So many of their dishes are good, but I particularly like their Tofu Panang Curry, Mussaman Curry, and their Pumpkin Curry. Their salads are great, too. I haven't had anything I didn't like. The service is prompt and friendly. They are particulalry accomodating to veggies/vegans because unlike the other Thai places in town, they don't use fish sauce! Also, they don't charge extra for fried tofu (Sombat's does). Their lunch specials are fantastic. They cook it fresh for you, and very quickly. It's much better than the goopy steam-tray stuff at the other places. Their food is very fresh and local. They are very environmentally conscious -- they walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Good food, nothing thats gonna blow your taste buds away. IMO somewhat pricey but they're open on Sunday so that's a plus... I had the combo special (bbq pork skewers, sticky rice and papaya salad) Nice filling portion, good flavor on the papaya salad and good sticky rice. The bbq pork was edible. Somewhat tough but not bad. For $12 it was alright. To me this is a lunch special that should be around $9. Anyway, my co-worker had the garlic stir fry. Not much garlic flavor but loaded w/ veggies and chicken. Cooked in a tomato based sauce that was interesting. Edible but probably wouldn't order it again. IMO this place will satisfy your craving for Thai food but w/ many other Thai options in Hilo, I'd go elsewhere. Thai iced tea was 'ono' though. Hope this yelps ;-) read more

Ambiance: Unlike what some other reviewers said, this place was not dirty or un-welcoming when we went. While the decor is simplistic, the seating (table and chairs) is just fine 3. Staff: The lady who took our order and served us was very friendly. 4. Food: Ordered veggie pad thai and veggie pumpkin curry - pad thai was a bit too sweet and the pumpkin curry was fine. Looking for Thai food in Hilo, found an assimilated version. Last time I was in Hilo, I was looking forward to trying this place out. We decided to order take-out on the last day we were there. It was promising that the food was up to Thai standards of spiciness. The food was spicy even for 'Mild'. I always felt that a sign of a good Thai place would be specifically states if they have an 'American-Hot' and 'Hot' option. However, there were things that seemed amiss from what I was expecting. We got some Summer Rolls, which seemed more westernized. The rolls were so thick; they seemed more like mini-burritos. They also filled the roll with too many carrots. We also had the Pad Thai, which was more on the blander side. The Basil Eggplant was good, but not too stellar. With both dishes, the flavors seemed more subdued, and there didn't seem much else was going on. The food seemed adjusted for the local palette. However, I did find the Panang Curry very tasty: I was impressed. The curry was better than most places in Oahu who go overboard with the coconut milk. It has a better fusion of flavors than the dumbed-down versions you abundantly find on Oahu. The dishes all tasted very healthy, and I thought the food was good. I just found some quirks to be very puzzling. Some of the dishes we had just weren't too good. Others were still tasty, just not the best. While the coconut shrimp was great, I would say avoid pad Thai here at all costs! The mild pad Thai had an abundance of curry powder which lent it a bitter taste and no fresh limes on the side of the dish or tamarind flavoring to balance the dish. The overall pad Thai experience is bland and bitter so avoid this dish. The locals seem to be happy here though so maybe it's that dishes are prepared such that it's more suited to local tastes and not something anyone who has travelled to Thailand or had Thai food anywhere else in the world would like. Came back here for lunch while visiting, and Naung Mai continues to have mind-blowing Thai food. We had the pumpkin curry and a yellow curry, both were completely amazing. Somehow much better quality ingredients than anywhere else I've tried. We finished it up with their amazing coconut ice cream topped with homemade tapioca and fresh strawberries. Maybe my favorite thing I consumed on the whole island. Ever. The whole thing was reasonably priced (around $25), lunch specials are a steal. This place has better Thai food than a lot of other Thai restaurants I've tried! Its not fancy at all but the food is awesome. We visited this place 2 times during our 3 night stay in Hilo! The Green Papaya salad was delicious and we just could not get enough of it. The pumpkin curry was also very good. For dessert, they have nice ice creams. We got the Poha Berry ice cream. And you absolutely have to get it topped with Tapioca pudding - yum! Its located in downtown, so not too far from pretty much anywhere in Hilo. He ordered a curry with pumpkin and I opted for a mild chicken curry. Service was so so but the food was tasty and filling for the lunch portion. I was very disappointed with your food today. Our Boss bought us lunch 8 plates for lunch at 15.00 each plate and the food was not good at all!! The fried rice was hard and not cooked just tasted like pineapple and dark brown, and not to mention that 2 of the staff ended up with a very upset stomach. It was expensive and not worth it at all. I called to tell the owner and she said that she will be more careful. It was a very expensive lunch! Not what I expected at all! I wont ever go there again!!! read more

This is one ofthe best Thai places I have eaten and certainly ranks high among the several Thai restaurants in Hilo. The food is fresh, prepared well, and very tasty. Kane, our server, was friendly and approachable. he took the time to explain the dishes to us, and was very attentive throughout. His smile and warm demeanor made the experience a delight. About the food, we enjoyed the level of spiciness(hot). it felt authenticallt thai, but then again we love spocy food. in general i think people would prefer mild and medium. we really enjoyed the pumpkin curry and green curry. Absolutley delicious. the sweet and sour fish was average. the basil eggplant was quite yummy - very well seasoned. the spicy basil noodle received mixed reviews from our group. some thought it was okay, but some thought that the beef was tough. finally the tom yum soup was delicious. not too sweet and great blend of spices. many of the dishes came with rice. they had red(brown), sticky and jasmine. some of us felt the red rice was a little dry. the dessert was heavenly, definitely a great end to our meal. mmm. we ordered three kinds of ice cream - coconut, poha and lychee. hilo homemade ice cream lived up to its reputation. all three were really really good. we also got a mango sticky rice. kane apologotelly told us they were almost out of stocky rice, and suggested yhat we substitue with some red(brown) rice instead. it turned out to be a fabulous combination, and the mango sticky rice is to die for. For our party of six we spent about $90 before tip for a very satisfying meal that left us bloated and very happy. Will definitely come back again. read more

I've been here twice now and have ordered the Spicy Basil Chicken dish and the Eggplant Chicken dish. I would say both were average but unfortunately both times we visited our waitress informed us that there was no sticky rice! The first time I figured it was a fluke but the second time makes it a habit in my eyes. The place is BYOB and doesn't charge a corkage fee which is pretty nice. Service was around average in my eyes with the water coming out pretty slow the second time. (Our food was hot I tell you!) I don't think I'll be coming again because like the old saying goes: No sticky rice once, shame on you! No sticky rice twice, I'm trying somewhere new! read more

The food at this place is so inconsistent. I've been coming here off and on for the last 4 years. Sometimes my food is really good (by Hilo Thai food standards), and other times it's really bad. After a really bad experience, my husband and I usually call it quits for a few months, then try them back again hoping for a better experience. I'm not sure if they switch out their cooks, but that could be a reason for the inconsistency. But even on a good day, you will not find authentic Thai flavors here. It's all wrong, the curry is too sweet, pad see ew is too salty...at least their Thai ice tea is pretty standard. I had the worst meal here last night, the bbq chicken combination with sticky rice and papaya salad. Sounds pretty simple, but it was like eating a salt brick. Thai bbq should be sweet salty, this was ALL salt. Even the papaya salad was salty. It tasted like they used soy sauce in it. Papaya salad should be at the very minimum sweet, salty, sour, and spicy (optional) - amongst other flavors. There were no other flavor distinguishable beside salt. That's the last straw. I don't think I could go back to this place and the "cook" that made the food last night, definitely wasn't their regular cook, and should be ashamed to put out food that bad. 2 stars for the few times of actual edible food. Definitely my fault for keeping coming back hoping for better food, but I definitely feel I gave them more than enough chances to redeem themselves and make better food. read more

This little Thai restaurant serves fresh ingredients and has an excellent menu. They have an array of curries (I've had the Yellow, Panang, Green, and Massaman) and they're all excellent. One curry and an appetizer can usually feed two moderately hungry people. All the curries come with your choice of white, jasmine, or sticky rice. The noodle dishes are equally as good. Pad See Ew (Funn Noodles) are excellent and you won't be able to stop eating them. The Pad Thai is not my favorite, but they have so many other wonderful dishes that I'm not worried about it. You can select mild (one pepper), medium, hot, or Thai hot (five peppers!) for your dishes and if you choose Thai hot. . .beware. You'll need at least 3 tall Thai Iced Teas to wash it down which, incidentally, are delicious. Sometimes parking can be a pain. It's located on a one way street behind Pineapple's, next to the Garden Exchange. Also, if you check in on the Yelp app, you get 10% off your first check in! Awesome! read more

Maybe it was an off night or maybe we just ordered wrong but I really thought this food was beyond mediocre. The chicken sate was gross. It had not been grilled, just sauteed in a lot of tasteless glop. The peanut sauce didn't do much to redeem it. The red curry was almost flavorless. My second visit and another great experience. Authentic clean "old Hilo" atmosphere. Fast friendly service, good food, good prices. We had chicken satay ($9, which is just not a few skewers of chicken, but a plate with a pile of grilled chicken); and sweet and sour beef ($11) loaded with fresh veggies. Rice is included, not extra cost. Delicious Thai iced coffee ($2) and a canned soda ($1). So a pleasant dinner for 2 for under $30. They have a nice picture menu that they bring along with the regular menu. My only suggestions are that the menus we got needed to be cleaned, and the atmosphere needs a little something to bring it to 5 stars... music would be a good start. read more

The salad I ordered never came. When the main dishes were served, I canceled my order of salad. At a table next to mine, the couple complained to the server that other people who arrived after them already had their food served to them, but they (the couple) were still waiting. They left, unserved, to catch their movie. Then their empty table sat empty for a long time despite there being people waiting for a table. I ordered the pumpkin curry, based on all the Yelp reviews mentioning it favorably. It was pumpkin and it was curry. Nothing especially creamy or outstanding about it. The brown rice that I ordered turned out to be unique. It looked like white rice that was stir fried in soy sauce. It did not have the texture of brown rice. I went to find the server and, when I did, I ordered white rice. It never came. The server, by the way, was excellent. The problem was that she was the only server in the whole restaurant! When I went to the cashier to pay the bill, I noticed that tons of takeout orders were ready to be picked up. So that is what was keeping the kitchen staff so busy, and disorganized. read more

No sugar coated review for this place, this has got to be the WORST Thai restaurant I have been to EVER!!! If I could score it below 0 stars I would. Having been to Thailand and being from California there is an expected level of food quality and customer service. I am all for paying for well presented great tasting food but the portion sizes they serve at this place are ridiculously anemic. I ordered a chicken with vegetables dish, the meat portion of the dish practically disappeared under all the vegetation. The sauce was watery and bland, chicken dried out white meat, and veggies soft like tofu. The salad was even worst. Veggies had sort of brownish edges and were heavily wilted from the dressing. Not fresh at all. The Pad Thai dish, noodles were over done and kind of gooey. Again, HUGE rip off on the meat, saw a few specs in there. No flavor at all. The service was just as anemic as the food. The waitress was super rude and unwelcoming. When we questioned the portion size of the dishes she said "So.... You basically want more food and don't want to pay for it". Who in the hell says that to a customer??? Then when the quality of the food was questioned we were told "Well we originally didn't want your business so we did you a favor". What???? Of all my years going to Hawaii, I have never had an unpleasant meal. Rule of thumb to live by for Big Island dining, eat local food and steer clear of this place.
