Massaman Curry
Mark T.

7/27/25 Naung Mai Thai Kitchen 86 Kilauea Ave Hilo, HI 96720 I have been here many times and I am convinced this is the best Thai in Hilo. It's on a small alley way with limited street parking so a walk may be involved. It's a small cozy table and chair setup with really gracious and helpful people. Our service was great. We ordered the Massaman and Salmon curries at the Thai spice level. My Massaman curry was exceptional with good coconut flavor, thick slices of seared beef, sweet potato, Kabocha pumpkin, carrot, broccoli, cabbage, onion and peanuts. It's really authentic with the twist of featuring local ingredients. Wifey's Salmon curry had large slices of braised salmon. The spice level was hot but we both liked it. The ingredients, flavors, quantities, preparation and quality of the dishes are great. Have and will repeat. They are closed on Mondays.

This place is such a cute small place. The employees are friendly. I wish I loved my meal more bc the pad see ew noodles were fresh, but it had no flavor. I did try the curry, which had flavor.

Smells so great I'd in here! A tiny dive with a handful of tables and street parking only. We ordered the Thai spring rolls, Panang curry w chicken, pad see ui, and the Tom yum soup. The spring rolls were crispy on the outside, with delicious vegetables and pork on the inside. They came with a yummy sweet and sour dipping sauce, and served on a bit of cabbage. These were really good. The Tom Yum soup was absolutely delicious, with plenty of vegetables and a buttery broth that was rich with lemon grass flavor and all the goodness you expect from Yum soup. They had a really nice dark brown rice that I love, and I put my panang curry on top of it. I ordered medium spice, and it was definitely medium spiced. I appreciate that because most people think that I don't like spicy food, so they don't ever spice it the way I want.the curry was creamy and delicious, the chicken was a little dry, but the vegetables were cooked perfectly. The pad see you was really good, with a very rich flavor that was a little different than I'm used to. I liked it a lot. The noodles were really soft and chewy like I like them, with crunchy carrots, and broccoli and zucchini with enough vegetables. Most of the time they don't give us enough vegetables, but I liked this very much. We also had a Thai iced tea, which was rich, creamy, flavorful, and super sweet. Just like Paula likes it! While we were sitting here, the place got super crowded, and it looks really popular, the service was great, and if you want to come, just know, you might have to get here early. There's not very many tables and it's apparently a very popular spot.

Baby cockroach

Food is okay until you find a cockroach in it. When you discreetly tell the waitress of the find, she says she'll "let them know". I didn't see roaches advertised as one of the ingredients? There will be no compensation on your bill, or even an apology. The appropriate action in such situations would be to make it right. Visited this place many times, but will not be anymore.

We went to the restaurant for lunch and specifically requested basil friend rice. However, the server forgot our request and only brought plain rice. When I asked for basil, she initially refused and then brought plain basil. Additionally, I wasn't satisfied with the fried rice. To make matters worse, while we were still eating, the server asked if she could take away our dishes. Overall, I advise visiting this restaurant at YOUR OWN RISK.

Naung Mai is really good Thai food tucked down a side street in downtown Hilo. A colleague recommended it and we were glad he did. We were a little early for lunch and were waiting outside when they opened at 11! The servers were really friendly and welcoming, especially to a pair of doorbusters. We agreed on one noodle dish and one curry dish as they are served family style. The food was ready pretty quickly and the portions were generious. Drunken Noodles - my friends in Hawaii turned me onto this dish and the one here was excellent. The noodles were very wide and chewy and kind of rolled up. When I was serving myself, I thought they were some kind of vegetable I didn't recognize! There were plenty of vegetables and shrimp and the sauce was very good. Since we were at a new Thai restaurant, we went with Mild, and I would not have minded a little more kick. Pineapple Curry - I really love pineapple curry and it's not that common. However, a lot of places in Hawaii serve it! The one here was very good! it was very saucy with plenty of chicken and veggies in a nicely flavored curry. I asked for extra rice to soak up even more! Again, we asked for mild, and I would have been happy with a little extra kick (and I don't really consider myself a hot head). I really enjoyed my meal here and would recommend!

I love this restaurant. I have to eat here at least once a month. Sometimes every week. They have the best Thai curry, it's addicting ! They give you such a generous amount of vegetables and the taste is always great. The staff is very friendly as well. My favorite place to eat in Hilo.

Red Curry with Chicken and Jasmine Rice (spicy)
Prath C.

We visited this place on a Saturday evening for dinner. This is a quaint place behind a busy street. As the place is slightly smaller, there is limited seating inside and no outdoor dining. We were seated relatively quickly and the service was very friendly in taking our order. The ambiance was nice and peaceful, away from the busier street. We ordered the following: 1. Red Curry with Chicken and Jasmine Rice (spicy) - Super creamy 2. Spring Rolls - 4 spring rolls cut in two 3. Fried Rice with Tofu (spicy) - delicious and the rice was soft 4. Spicy Basil Stir-fried Tofu (spicy) - the vegetables were delicious and fresh 5. Pad Kee Mau with Chicken (spicy) - delicious and the noodles take amazing and chicken was tender Overall, the food was delicious and very spicy as requested. Price-wise, given the price, the portion sizes were a bit on the smaller side. Overall, definitely enjoyed eating here and recommend it!

The best green papaya salad. Lots of vegetables and peanuts. The dressing is excellent. A bit pricey, but worth the experience.

I think it's Overpriced for portion and taste - just know the chicken satay is an oily dish vs. on the skewer

The lunch special is served with an Asian side salad that has a vinaigrette dressing, which was a nice way to start the meal. The curry itself was also great. Seems to be a local favorite during the workweek for people who work in the area, and I can see why!

I loved the variety of the food. You can never go wrong with a Thai noodle dish, and the pad kee Mao was definitely my favorite. The noodles were the perfect texture and very flavorful. The papaya salad had a good crunch, and the green curry was delicious. The pork basil dish was a little interesting, and I would probably skip this the next time. We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.

I chose to enjoy a meal at a place that's tied with deep sentimental value. Where stories were shared, memories were created with my late grandmother. This was her favorite Thai restaurant when I was a kid. A bit smaller than their original location but still offering a feeling of nostalgia. It used to be located on Mamo Street known as Royal Siam Thai Restaurant. A name change happened years later to Hilo Siam Thai Restaurant, when a brother and wife duo from the same family took over. It's still located in historic Downtown Hilo, now on Furneaux Lane. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The ambiance is simple. Intimate and casual yet comfortable. The high ceiling drew my eyes upward creating the illusion of grand volume in a small space. Would softer lighting and decorative elements elevate the prevailing feeling or tone, adding a stylish touch in dramatic fashion I thought? As I sat down on one of three tables, the ocean breeze gently whisked through the front door. Delightful. Friendly and attentive service from start to finish from the owner who took my order. As he diligently managed multiple takeouts phoning-in and picking-up on both visits. Ice cubes in our water would've been nice yet, glasses were constantly refilled and never left empty. It felt like I was dining in someone's home with the kitchen nearby just steps away. The husband + wife team were at the helm of every menu item I ordered, as I peeked into the kitchen from an outside jalousie window. Here, food is their main focus and they delivered well beyond my expectations. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ "Green Papaya Salad" Vibrant and crunchy from shredded green papaya, julienne of carrots + tiny pieces of chopped peanuts. Complex and refreshing yet with minimal heat coming through. I have to appreciate the labor involved, shredding each papaya by hand for one order. The sauce, a harmonized balance of sweet, sour and tangy notes. $10.95 as of March 2026. "Eggplant w/ Sweet Basil & Pork" "Basil Beef w/ Bell Peppers" Distinct flavor layering, extremely fragrant. I enjoyed the scent first, then allowed the flavors to pop as a result of fresh basil. A savory sauce coats an ample amount of finely sliced pork and pieces of tender eggplant on one dish, beef with bell peppers (no round + green onions request) on the other. This one played with my senses. Bold aromatics. $13.95 as of March 2026. "Yellow Curry with Beef" Herbaceous and earthy notes without the spicy elements. Aromatic with generous amounts of sliced beef only paired with potatoes. A premium feel. Hearty, warm and rich as the spices of the curry come through vibrantly. $13.95 as of March 2026. "Buddha Rama with Chicken" The defining element, a rich and savory peanut sauce. Creamy and complex with a handful of underlying flavors. Highly irresistible, extremely addicting. Tender pieces of chicken and spinach, with chopped peanuts adding a delightful crunch to each spoon-full. A distinct flavor profile. This one was grandma's favorite, it's now mine. $13.95 as of March 2026. Order a bowl of fragrant steamed Jasmine rice on the side and Pad Thai Noodles with your choice of protein like me. Compliment your meal with a glass of Thai Iced Tea topped with sweet condensed milk as well. Don't forget to order your spice level. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Culinary execution with care, delicious flavors from exotic spices and ingredients. Keeping operational costs to a minimum, allowing Hilo Siam Thai Restaurant to price menu items lower than others in-town while offering generous portions. A cozy, homey setting with close and friendly service. Discover the time to find parking and enjoy lunch + dinner at specific times throughout the week like I did. Dine-in or call-in your order for takeout. Hilo Siam Thai Restaurant, a hole-in-a-wall worth finding. A delicious hidden gem, uniqueness in a tucked-away setting.
