Soooo disappointed!! Ordered from Express waiters and was just shocked at how poor the food was- over cooked vegetables with no favor -reheated leftovers and the smallest proportions ever. I didn't even get a full bowl of soup!!! I am not a big food delivery but I'm home sick and was craving soup and so used the delivery. I have been to this place several times and loved it in person but based on my experience today with food delivery, I would not ever order from them again. So little for the high price, the Spring rolls were rolled so loosely and a small shrimp hidden inside, the sauce was terrible vinegary and the Green curry had to much spice, we asked for no spice because of the children, the fried rice was sticky with no flavor and also the basil chicken had to much of that brown sauce and or msg. My favorite Thai restaurant in Hilo (which is saying a lot because Hilo has many excellent Thai restaurants). The spicy clams are a nice surprise. Seafood salad has an amazing herby/citrusy/slightly sweet dressing. The salmon curry is also a mandatory order for us. The noodles are yummy too. We got dinner delivered so I can't comment on the restaurant feel or service there. We ordered the Red Curry, the Funn Noodles, Pad Thai, and Mixed Vegetable Sir Fry. I'm giving this a 2 star review because all the food was unfortunately very bland. There was very little flavor in any of our dishes and even though we ordered medium spice level, there was no heat. The Pad Thai was particularly bad because the noodles were way overcooked and gummy. I don't often leave low star reviews, but I think it's worth the warning that you might be disappointed by eating here. read more

I ain't no Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors loving, bandwagoning scrub. /end basketball nerd I haven't actually been to this restaurant as the food I've had was delivered by a family member, but I did thoroughly enjoy it. I got the yellow chicken curry, and man oh man, did it hit the spot. I'm always a huge fan of the Japanese-style yellow curry, so I figured that it would be a safe option. And I was right! The curry was very tasty. Not too spicy, but still very flavorful, with lots of chicken in it, as well as lots of veggies. And deez nutz. Whoa. There was the perfect amount of that coconut milk flavoring that is so great in curry. Always thought you can never go wrong with Thai food until my group and I ended up here after seeing good reviews on both Yelp and Google but soon to learn that the food was awful. Pad see ew is my go-to and the sauce was practically just soy sauce and my dry noodles were on a bed of liquid. My friend's pad thai was cooked with ketchup. Also ordered chicken satay which was different from the usual chicken in a stick version that we are used but it was good. We moved here a little over 6 months ago and are always looking to try some place new. One of the few places that stays open on Sundays. We enjoyed the food. I especially liked the beef salad. I'm not usually one to handle spice very well but the medium spice was just right for me. We also got the green curry w/ chicken and one of the noodle dishes with beef. Large serving sizes so we went home with a lot of leftovers. Prices are decent. The service could have been better. We asked for lemon for our water at least 4 times before we got it. We asked for an extra straw twice. The appetizers and salad came first, but shortly after we were served our entrees. Barely enough time to dig in to the appetizers. This is a small restaurant which seems like a family run business. We just stopped by for a quick dinner since we needed to drive back to the other side of the island back to our resort. The service is a little slow. Might be because there seemed to be just one person who served food. Thai Summer Rolls weren't that great. I think it was prepared right but I didn't like the taste of raw veggies and rice paper. It was weird. Pineapple Chicken Fried Rice in the main course. It was delicious and interesting. I had never tasted something like that before. A little on the sweeter side but I loved it. My husband took Veg Fried Rice which was good too. When we arrive to the island, we asked our driver "what food should we get?" And he recommended us to get any Thai food in Hilo. So then of course we opened our Yelp app and look for Thai food. Found this place, 4 stars and plenty of reviews. We arrive to this location, it's small few areas to sit but no waiting time. Our server give us a menu and asks what we want, we ordered Pad Thai, Pad See Ui, Chicken Satay, and a Thai Iced tea. Food took about 20 min to get to the table. The chicken satay looked odd to us. It was green and not in a kabob, it was chopped up. The peanut sauce was crunchy, but it was enjoyable. Actually the peanut sauce was the best thing about this place. The Chicken Satay was a curry chicken. We didn't ask for curry chicken but that's how they season it. Not what we wanted. The pad Thai had cracked eggshells in it and it had no taste, very bland and poorly season. The pad see ui was colorless, and in taste bud terms, it was distasteful. Again no flavor or seasoning. At this point we decided it would be best to give this place 2 stars but then the worst was brought upon us. The best tasting part of the restaurant, the peanut sauce, had a hair in it which made us almost throw up. In other words I wouldn't recommend this Thai place, I honestly don't even think it's Thai food. They are best know for their curries by the look of all other customers. Honestly my fave and go to Thai place! It's a little hole in the wall restaurant, but the staff is sooo friendly. The only downside is that parking can be a little of a hassle because it's in a small one way street, but to me I think it's worth it if I have to walk a couple minutes. They have about average prices, but they give out good portions. I usually order take out (which you can call ahead) and they are fast and efficient. They give good portions here for sure, so come hungry! It's a very cute little place with ample street parking out front. I tried the Pad See Ew and my friend tried the Sweet and Sour Pork. We ended the meal with the House Delight dessert, which was a couple scoops of mango ice cream over coconut sticky rice and peanuts. Thai iced tea was also tried. :-) In general, the food was pretty good. My only issue is that all the items are very heavily flavored, from the iced tea through to the dessert. Hands down this is the BEST Thai restaurant in Hilo!!!!! We've tried most of them and this place had the most rich tasting curry I have had! The veggies were large and fresh! It looks like its organic or localy bought too! The Thai teas are super sweet! Just the way I like it! The ladies there are very pleasant and the food taste like home cooking! It's just plain lovely! This place small business in Hilo. Parking was really easy to find and when we got here at 5:30 ish it was not super busy. They were so accommodating from the moment we walked in. We have a big family (6 people) so it's always a gamble to see who is willing and able to serve us. We totally lucked out with this choice. We ordered pineapple curry, chicken pad thai, and crab fried rice. Everything was great, but that pineapple curry was our favorite. Also, if you haven't been to Hawaii... not everywhere has a restroom on site so going to an establishment that has its own restroom (like this one) is a plus. My picky kids ate their food with no complaints and even told us how much they liked it! Definitely recommend!!! read more

They give a generous amount for the pumpkin curry, but I found it to be very bland. It needed salt or some type of seasoning. Maybe it was an off day, but I was not impressed. Was happy they offer brown rice though. Quite different looking (dark), but it was good. The shrimp pad Thai was decent. The shrimp was cooked nice, but again nothing outstanding. The service was slow. Especially when we were trying to pay. There was no one left in the restaurant and for some reason it took at least 10 minutes for my friend and I to split the tab. Not sure if they did not know how to do this or the machine was down. No communication with us though. I've always had a pleasant dining experience at Naung Mai. Their yellow and green curries are delicious as well as their cashew chicken and fried rice. Each dish is made as mild or spicy as you want. I wasn't a big fan of their pad thai noodles. It tasted like it was made with tomato sauce which I don't believe is the "traditional" way (but hey I'm not Thai so I'm no expert). But other than the pad thai, everything else I've tried on their menu has left my stomach happy and content. The restaurant appears to be a little "hole-in-the-wall" place on the outside. On the inside, however, although small, has very appealing decor and colors that make you feel like you're dining in Thailand. The small space may make it hard to get a seat (it's probably got less than 10 tables in the restaurant), and close seating means it can get loud (and scrunched) when it's crowded and every table is talking. Parking may also be tight since it's street parking on a narrow, one-way street. Despite those downfalls, the food is enough to keep me going back. That, and the thai iced tea =) read more
