3weeks ago had issues with my Honda Odyssey with catalytic converter. The car would stall out. They recommended to change the spark plugs too, so I did. I picked my van up on a Thursday and did not get 3 blocks when the car did the same thing again. Took it back to Neal's and they looked at it again and told me something different was wrong and that it had to do with a recall issue. They told me the part they needed was on back order and it would be until July 2nd before I could get it back. They also told me they would try to get Honda to pay for it. The following Monday I received a call for a gentleman who told me he had my van. He told me NEAL'S Garage loaned it to him for a trip he'd had to go on to Ohio. They told him it was their Aunts car. His car was in for repair as well. The man became suspicious and looked in the glove box and got my name and called me. In total disbelief and anger we both went down and confronted Chris, the owner. Needles to say you can not believe the lies. I took my car to Honda dealer and had it looked at and as suspected, the work was not done and even the Oxygen sensors had been tampered with to make it pass inspection. A bunch of liar, rude and shady to illegal. Oh, if that's not enough, they inspected my other car earlier and I found out they put the wrong vin number I wonder who got their car inspected...not mine. read more

I decided to take my car to Neal's Garage after reading the good reviews on Yelp. Having recently moved from NYC to NC, I was worried about finding a mechanic that wouldn't rip me off (especially since I'm a girl and know nothing about cars). Well, I was not disappointed after my experience here...I dropped my car off and they looked at my car's tires immediately because I was bringing it in due to poor alignment. They told me that my back tires would need replacing in the near future, but that it was not necessary to do it that day. I appreciated the heads up and that they didn't just tell me it needed to be done right then and there. I was expecting to pay at least 500 dollars to fix my car (lots of issues), but I ended up paying under 150, which was a fantastic surprise! I didn't even have to ask them to apply my 10% Duke student discount...they automatically asked me if I was a student there. I would recommend this mechanic to anyone (and have already sent my friend there...she was equally as happy)!!! read more

Absolutely hellish is the only way I can describe my experience with Neal's Garage. They had my car for five weeks. Their work was slow, sloppy, and incomplete. Customer service was abominable. When I called to ask what was going on and why it was taking so long, I got a lot of loud mechanic nonsense which was used to bully me off the phone. When they finally told me the car was ready, the check engine light was on. When I called back to talk about this, instead of discussing my dissatisfaction with their work, they accused me of damaging their loaner car. Offering no evidence whatsoever other than their word, they expected me to fork over almost another thousand dollars. I filed a claim with my insurance company, but instead of working with the insurance, they waited eight months and then informed me they were taking me to small claims court. Stay away! read more

I took my car in for the first time last week. It was very easy to make an appointment and the abundance of shops and cafes in the area are nice if you find yourself with an hour and a half to kill. Prices were a bit higher than I'm used to paying at national chains, but I'm happy to support local businesses. One thing I did not appreciate, however, was repeatedly being called "dear" by a young man working there. I am a 30something woman and do not need to be patronized by a young 20something man. Neal's Garage did a solid job on my oil change. They were polite and efficient. When the oil change took a bit longer than expected, they were apologetic and explained that they were having some equipment problems. I wish they had a larger waiting room instead of just one bench inside (since it's too hot to wait outside during the summer) but they're so close to various restaurants and shops that it's okay. They offer a 10% discount for students, teachers, etc. I would definitely go back in the future! read more

Let me first say that I have not had any repair work done at Neils Garage, and if I needed it desperately, I still would not give them my money. My husband and I stopped by Sam's grill to pick up lunch and parked in the parking lot lot beside the building. It took all of five minutes to order and get our hotdogs. We walk over to our car and notice a car is pulled up very closely behind us (sideways). I'm thinking they are grabbing food also, so we wait patiently. A young guy is sitting in a car in front of us like he's waiting on us to pull out-but soo not the case. Another young guy walks hurriedly by us to a truck that is kind of parked beside us (but we could back out strategically)which was my plan. Guy in red truck pulls up completely beside us and the guy that was in front of us slants his car so that we can't get out. We then realize that we have been purposely blocked in!! I wondered why the red truck guy said, you have to see my manager to get this car from behind you. Well, my husband gets out of the car, to do just that, and the guy, who I later find out is the owner, says that we can't park here. My husband explains to him that we were trying a new spot for lunch and did not realize that. He said well you can't park here because it's private parking, I say "there is no sign up stating that". He says "I own the lot across the street (Neils Garage) and this lot". I say "how would I know that?". He says " well you can tell that to the tow truck driver" and starts walking off! My husband says " you can tell the police when they get here". My husband proceeds to call the police and right before he hangs up, another young guy comes out and says "this ain't right, they do this all the time". Now, I have no problem not parking in a private lot whatsoever, if I know that it's private. Evidently, they were watching us while we parked, while at the outside grill, and walking back. Why couldn't they stop us then? Is $50 worth that much to you where you need to mislead people and not have any type of "no parking" or "private parking" sign posted?? Needless to say, I will not ever take anything of mine to their establishment. P.S. I bet they will have a sign posted tomorrow-because they know they are wrong!! read more

Took my van to Neal's on a Monday, for repair of catalytic converter and diagnos why my van was stalling out. They told me on Thursady that it was ready. I picked it up and I did not get 2 blocks and it was doing the same thing. I had just paid an 1100.00 bill. I immediately took it bac to them and once they looked at it they told me that there was a problem with the fly rod and that there was a national back order on them and it had been a problem with the Odyseeys. They told me that the part would not be to them for repair until July. Since I had another vehicle to use I said okay. The next Monday morning I received a phone call from a man who said he had my van and that Neal's Garage loaned him my van to drive 250 for the weekend. Of course, I was in disbelief. The man and I went to Neal's Garage and confronted him with the situation. Chris from Neal's said he needed for someone to drive my van 150miles to test it. They felt like they had done nothing wrong. The catch here is that Neal's Garage told the man that this Van belonged to their Aunt and it would be okay. To top it off they inspected another car of mine and when I went to get the license plate, they had put in the wrong VIN number. They are shady and beware. I took my van to the Honda dealer to see if the work had actually been done and it had not been. They had not changed the catalytic converter and they had altered the oxygen sensors to give a false reading at inspection. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR THERE. THE WORST DECISION OF MY LIFE. Had to share this unbelievable story from a co-worker who left her car to be repaired at Neal's Garage. Since a part was needed, my coworker left the vehicle in the care of Neal's Garage until the part came in. Unbelievably, this vehicle was LOANED out to another customer for a weekend trip to Ohio! My coworker would not have known this, except the second customer discovered the ruse when he found the vehicle registration in the glove box and realized the car belonged another individual, NOT Neal's Garage. I took my 1999 4-Runner to Neal's to have the water pump replaced. I'm a prior F-15E crewchief and lifelong car guy. I know how to work on cars, I just don't have a garage. After the work was "complete"and I was checking over the work, I discovred they failed to re-install 3 of the 4 radiator mounting bolts. Additionally my alternator belt had about a 9 in cut in it that was NOT there before I took my vehicle in. The mechanic TRIED to explain to me that the radiator and fan shroud didn't have to be removed to get to the water pump for them to replace it. Huh, that's interesting, the radiator didn't shake like this when I dropped it off and I know for a fact that I didn't take the bolts out. After some convincing, he said that he and I could look in their metal trash bin and low and behold we found 3 bolts that were just like the ones I were missing. I wasn't going to try and argue about the cut belt due to the fact that that wasn't the reason I brought my 4-Runner in for service in the first place. I took my car to Neal's Garage after getting my car jumped (my battery died). I was first turned off by the fact they asked for my registration. Why do they need my registration to replace a battery? The customer service was pretty bad. I've never seen such lifeless, bland, unfriendly people. They did replace my battery, but I noticed the next morning that they did not return my registration! As it turned out, they gave my registration to another customer who drove out of town after she left the shop. These people did not seem to understand the enormity of their mistake. I got a weak apology, and they told me they would bring my registration to me after the other customer mailed it back to them (whenever she got around to it). Really unimpressed with these people. Immediately after getting my oil changed at Neal's Garage I started to notice a pool of oil forming under my vehicle. I took my car to a different mechanic to have them check it out and they discovered that there was no longer a gasket on my oil plug. I lost about 2 quarts of oil and fortunately got everything fixed before any permanent damage was caused. How on earth someone who works on cars for a living managed to put an oil plug back in without a gasket on it is beyond me. Considering these guys can't get something as simple as changing the oil right, I wouldn't trust them to do anything else. read more

Our car stopped working a month ago or so. We took our car to Neil's Garage to get it fixed. We have 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe. Scott (at the front desk) gave us an estimate around $1200 (ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS). Too much to spend on our old car however we believed that they were going to do a good job. Big mistake. We paid the around $1200 to Neil's Garage, took the car back (with a 3 or 4 days of DELAY) , the car's engine light was still ON(???) I was driving the car with my two toddlers and the car stopped in the middle of the road. Almost hit by someone behind me. I called the Neil's Garage and talked to Scott. He was very aggressive and rude to me on the phone during our conversation. No word of apology, no word of sorry. Long story short, we took the car back to Neil's Garage hoping they will fix it again. After we took the car back to them the second time we received a call from Scott asking us to pay another couple hundred dollars to fix the car AGAIN. We said goodbye to Neil's Garage. Took the car to another car repair shop.The owner is the sweetest elderly man, grandfather of 15 children. He checked our car and found a different problem than what Neil's Garage told us and he charged us less than Neil's Garage's estimate. Since then my car is happy again and engine light is finally OFF. I still feel lucky to find this new car repair shop and of course regret my experience with Neil's Garage. read more

So, my car had been making this whomp whomp whomp noise when I braked. Turns out it was not an easy problem to fix, mostly due to a series of unfortunate events beyond Neal's control. For example, the new axle they put in was faulty (came from the factory that way, not Neal's fault) and busted a seal or something as soon as I drove it out of the garage, so I had to bring it right back to have the axle re-replaced. The guys at Neal's bent over backwards to resolve the problem once and for all. In the end, I bought a new axle (just one, I didn't pay for the one that was busted). When I picked up my car, not only was the noise gone, but they had cleaned it (inside and out), deep cleaned the headlights, and filled it up with gas, at no charge. Who does that? Awesome, awesome, awesome. Thank you, Neal's! I really don't have the words to say how happy I am with their service, kindness, and dedication to resolving the issue with my car. read more

Wish I had searched the Yelp first! Awful customer service and mechanic work! Took my car to get the alternator replaced but of course they wanted to get you for the diagnostic testing. First easy check is to take the negative battery cable off while it's running. If it dies it's the alternator if it continues to run the battery may needs to be replaced. So they charged me $500.00 for a new battery, programming the new battery and the diagnostic test. Well 30 miles driving and the car dies again. Battery not charging! I guess it's the ALTERNATOR! So they keep the car all day and don't even bother to call me. First time I came in they drove me home in a parts pick up van. The next day they take me home in one of the new Fiat fleet cars. Those of you that had great or good service? You were the lucky ones. Like one of the others has said. Get a second opinion. Trust your instincts because I didn't. read more

I went in for the first time to have a diagnostics test done on my truck, and when I came back to get it after the estimate was too high for my allowed budget and I had decided to go with a family friend mechanic, the manager (Chris) came out to confess the he had personally lost my keys. I'm not sure how this is actually possible?? But he immediately offered to have someone come out and make a key for my truck and motorcycle (Two very important keys out of many that were misplaced.) or have one of his employee's return my keys IF he found them. Turns out the manager had left them in the owners Fiat?? and was having someone drop them off at my house. When his employee Larry dropped them off at night my truck key, motorcycle key and bike lock key were all still missing!!! This all happened on Monday, and now on Wednesday I am pulling teeth to have someone take responsibility for losing my truck and motorcycle key at the very least (I do not have a spare for them) and the manager after refusing to put me in contact with the owner, telling me I shouldn't have given so many keys to them, and assuring me they were all there when returned to me, has yet to realize that had my keys been where they were supposed to be when I came to pick up my vehicle that it would have been easily acknowledged that there were still some missing, I can't believe this place is actually open!! This is the worst experience I have EVER had at any business EVER. read more

My first time dealing with Neal's Garage and I am left with issues of mistrust and dismay. My vehicle was towed to its location over two weeks ago and upon a scheduled appointment I was informed that a mechanic had became ill. I made two personal visits and discovered that my vehicle was not even looked at for at least a week and half. One aspect in business dealing is when the person on the other end of the line is talking very quickly - something is usually wrong. The initial issue was the wire and then all of a sudden it finally came down to the starter. My bill for parts and service was $700.00. I decided not to have my vehicle inspected because I felt cheated and did not want to fall for another sales pitch. The going vicinity price for a new starter is usually under $120.00. I was charged $170.00 dollars for a 17 year old vehicle and labor was $367.86. The owner at the inspection station told me that he would have charged me under $100.00 for the starter. Several friends told me that I was ripped off again. I was not even given the extent to utilize a vehicle for the unnecessary extended period of service. I do not understand why city managers allow businesses to continue to lie and cheat trust worthy customers. Many mechanics today are greedy for money and will do anything for the sake of money. One thing that is important to remember is the power of the pen aka the power of the internet. One cannot continue to be prosperous when one keeps planting seeds of discord and dishonesty.
