Was really pleasantly surprised by this place, since the reviews I read before were not the best I had the pleasure of coming here for a party where they closed out the whole restaurant for the occasion. I really liked the setup of the restaurant, felt very intimate and authentic. I can't judge the service since it was obviously good for us because we had a closed off party. However the food we ordered was the same food they had on the menu, and I enjoyed all of it. The appetizers were all fresh and flavorful. I usually am not the biggest fan of stuffed grape leaves, but I couldn't stop telling my gf how much I liked theirs. They also gave us this goat cheese, mint, raddish and nut platter which we used to make little sandwiches with the hot lavash, and it was so damn good We ordered one of the stews, and it was very reminiscent of the creamy beef I tried at Baluchi's, which is one of my favorite dishes. And last but not least, all the meat was very fresh and cooked medium and juicy, and served with a side of well cooked rice. To be honest the place is great, it may look bad from the out side but the food on the inside is really good. I usually get chicken and rice and it is always cooked to perfection! The place is a little short staffed but the food makes up for it. Many people don't like to try different foods from different countries but it's always great to try. The place was close to empty on a Thursday night; the service was just inadequate. At some point, we felt like we were actually bothering the owner by calling him over and trying to order food and drinks (we ordered food for almost $100 for the 2 of us; they did accept $25 coupon from Restaurant.com). After having heard rave reviews from several people, finally got a chance to visit this restaurant this week. It's right in the middle of Summit downtown on Springfield Ave, parking was easy to find given that it was a week night. The ambiance is good - authentic Persian style decor. The place is a little small but that's what makes it feel intimate. I am surprised that so many folks here have complained that there is very little space around the table - we didn't find this to be true at all. The space between tables is just right to give you privacy yet not too far so the place seems lively. The lamb chops with jasmine rice and boneless chicken kebobs with rice were Outstanding with a capital O. I am a foodie and it's hard to find good lamp chops - here they are just about the best I have ever had. If you're unsure what to order, give the lamb chops a try - you won't be sorry. The place is BYOB - like most Middle Eastern restaurants, they will provide you with the glasses for wine, but they won't pour - absolutely fine with that. Prices are reasonable given that it is in the heart of Summit with some more expensive restaurants in the neighborhood. Service was friendly and prompt. Already planning on going here again with another group of friends - that's how much I liked it! read more

This place is unfortunate. The food I have to admit is good. Service mediocre. But the owner is rude! I bought an amazon Local deal. When I arived at the restaurant I was told I could not use it so I asked why? The owner rudely told me that he makes no money from those deals and that I needed 4 people. So I pulled up my amazon local account and showed him that what he was telling me is not what it says on amazon local. He said well he told amazon what he wanted and they made a mistake. So I said sir I am a customer what can I do to make this right. He said I had to order 4 dishes. It was just me and my husband. This was terrible. What a rude nasty owner who has no regard to his customers. I will never step foot in this establishment again. Which makes me sad as the food is tasty. I came here for an early Valentine's Day dinner as a surprise. Unfortunately the place was dead but had potential to be full because the food was great! however, the service was pretty horrible. I had to ask or server twice for water. I don't know any other Persian/Iranian restaurants in the region so it's jar to compare but with such a friendly staff, some outdoor seating up front and with the tasty nicely served food it's a true pearl in the heart of Summit. The only downside is the price. We had stopped in for lunch after visiting the Summit farmer's market. Comfortable outdoor dining, but few customers in sight. I had the falafel with hummus, diced cucumber/tomato/onion salad and flat bread. My wife had a vegetable lentil stew over rice and a friend had a chicken dish over rice. One of the worst dining experiences I ever. Ever! Upon entering Negeen at 5:30 PM on a Wednesday night, it was 90 degrees with 100% humidity, and NO air conditioning. The door was open for flies to come in and it was hot. The next thing I noticed was the smell. I will be polite and simply say "this was not an odor someone would want to bottle". Next, the owner/waiter/chef came over. His name is Merhdad a.k.a. Mike. He was wearing a shirt, and shorts similar to what someone would wear to clean the attic. His clothes were filthy . . . I mean covered in dirt and grease. Scary dirty. Mike, whose clothes were filthy, had no gloves or hat for his hair, and was about to cook our dinner. Despite this start, we wanted to try something different. so we stayed. Bad decision on my part. I had purchased a Groupon. It was a purchase price of $18.00, for $35.00 worth of food. No other rules applied. When we ordered a salad, 2 appetizers, an entree, and 2 drinks totaling $40, Mike said he wanted us to order more food. I responded by asking why, and he simply said, "since we were using a Groupon, he just wanted us to order more". Clearly asking us to do something he should not be doing. That's the purpose of a GROUPON. When we told him we can order whatever we want, he told us to leave. Amazing!!! We were the only customers in this HOT, SMELLY, NO A/C, dirty chef, restaurant during the dinner hour, and the owner walks us. I contacted GROUPON and got a full refund. We've been to Negeen 4-5 times since they opened. They have stumbled for a bit in terms of service and quality but based on our last visit (last night), I think they have begun to turn things around as we hoped they would (and in response to consumer feedback). We ordered two stews, which were delicious if somewhat small in portion size, shirazi salad (tasty although again, small), and several platters of kabobs (chicken, salmon, lamb, and beef). Their meat had a tendency to be dry, but last night it was tender, juicy and flavorful, especially the beef. We also enjoyed the rice dishes including shirin pollo and the basic white and saffron rices. For first-timers I would recommend trying the flavored rices, the salmon, and the beef/lamb as opposed to the chicken which can be dry and tough. Service is very well meaning but definitely not very professional -- a work in progress. The atmosphere is very pleasant, the owners are friendly, and we will be back hoping to see continued improvement. read more

Outstanding Persian food, probably the best in the Metro-Area. The restaurant was very warm and friendly and the food looked and tasted as if it was made at home. I really enjoy the zeresk polo and my wife's Shirin rice was really good. I had some Persian ice and shared a pot of tea with my wife. I love the little tea cups which really made it feel as if I was in Iran. The only sour note was my son who would only eat a hamburger and refused to have the Persian. One of the drawbacks to dining in New Jersey while living so close to NYC is the lack of diversity for tasteful food on a tight budget. While this was not the least expensive weeknight choice for dining out, it was reasonable, and by far one of the best surprises to my palate! All of the food here is prepared authentically, fresh, and with lots of love. It feels a bit like going to someone's home for dinner. Since I am new to Persian cuisine, the waitress/ cook/ owner(?) took time to describe dishes and flavors of herbs on the menu that I was unfamiliar with, (like "Fenugreek"). Also, when my date asked about "Doogh", a salty yogurt-based Persian beverage, she brought us small samples to try. The pickle and olive appetizer was a generous portion but a tad generic; the stews on the other hand were homemade, unique, and wonderful! I look forward to going back and trying many other dishes... One note: though this is a wonderful little date spot, I would perhaps advise against "first dates"- my partner and I both experienced some seriously stinky gas later in the night! ;) read more

I discovered Negeen from an Internet search and was pleasantly surprised. I'm gluten-free and when I asked what dishes on the menu are GF, I was surprised to learn that EVERYTHING on the menu is GF (except the pita bread)! They'd be wise to promote that they're GF. The food was very good, large portions. The eggplant appetizer was quite good, as were all our entrees. The owner, who served us, was lovely and she chatted with us a bit. Nice, cozy atmosphere. We enjoy middle-eastern food and were looking forward to the dinner. We were early for the dinner and were the only diners. We braced ourselves for disappointment when we heard the familiar microwave "ding" sound, followed by our warm appetizer - charbroiled eggplant puree (mirza ghasemi). At least the bread was hot and tasty - this too turned to a disappointment when we received the bill and noticed that the bread was charged $1.95 - 1) we did not order it, and 2) there should have been some communication that if we need bread we should order and pay for it separately. The main course was Beef & Chicken Kebab combo, and Fesenjan (Chicken Stew). The kebab's were over cooked and tasteless. The chicken stew was over sweet, uniformly grey and microwaved - should have guessed as the entrees arrived even before we could finish our appetizers. We have had better food experience in less fancy restaurants. Would strongly advise against this restaurant for their bad food, over-priced, less than honest business practice. I've eaten here a few times before, the last with a $40 for $20 Groupon, and found the food to be fairly good. Menu prices are a bit high for what it is, but with the Groupon you can't complain. Or can you? The other night I went with another Groupon. We ordered the stuffed grape leaves (very good), 2 shish kebabs (pretty good) and an order of bread, which came to $43 and change. When I presented my Groupon, the waiter said we had to order 2 appetizers or an appetizer and a dessert to use the Groupon. I pointed out that the deal did not say this, only that we got $40 of food for $20. He went to the manager (?owner) and came back, accepting my Groupon. At this point, my GF tells me she watched a group come in after we were seated, present their Groupon, be told the same story, and leave. There's something wrong here. I won't be back. read more

Negeen is a hidden gem in Summit. Their meze and kebab selection is great and every item I tried was delicious. I definitely recommend the mixed grill! The only downside of dining at Negeen is that they are usually short on staff and the service is a bit slow. read more

5-star price...0-star service This guy who served us was outright rude. No smile, no checking on us during the meal, no water even though we had 2 big glasses. We had to pack our own leftovers, and when the check came, he just dropped it on our table and walked away. There was an extra charge of a bread that we did not order and was just an add-on to the humus we ordered. This was the final straw for me - sneaking in an additional charge. The food was 2 star at best. The only thing that was good was the humus, the salmon entree and the kabob koubideh entrees were very average and definitely not worth the price of the service.
