Terrible restuarant! This owner ruined my Sunday evening by kicking my family out of restaurant because we were Groupon user. I purchased $30 Groupon for family of three as Q&A said it is okay. However, owner asked me to order two appetizers, 4 entrees and 2 dessert to use groupon. He said this is his store rule for groupon users. I asked him there is no policy like that and I love to spent $60 value as I purchased but that is too much food for my family. He just rejected what I said and told me that if you not gonna order all these, you can't use your coupon. OMG! How he treat customers so badly!!! Even he let us sit very small table right next to door although restuarant was almost empty. Just two table were occupied. I will ask groupon to refund my money as I was denied to eat this place. I have driven past this place so many times. My friend said lets try it. I am sooooooo happy we did! My tastebuds were jumping for joy. We ordered two appetizers and entrees and WOW! All of it, so delicious! Topped off the happy tummy with Persian tea and Ice cream with Faloodeh (sp?) I will go back very soon and will bring as many curious people that I can find. I ordered food for a 4th of July birthday party I was having for my husband. I found the owner to be very pleasant and accommodating. Food arrived on time and the presentation of the food was very professional....very impressed. I ordered the chicken, steak and salmon kebobs. My wife and myself always try unique restaurants. We were looking forward to Middle Eastern food. When we arrive in the restaurant, it was empty except for the owner and a waitress. The restaurant was hot. We were about to sit outside, but it look like rain. Finally the owner turned on the air condition. We ordered several stews and grape leaves. The grape leaves was different and had rice that was well season. The bread was brought to us and was stale and not heated. I ordered another bread, this time it was heated and not stale. The stew had very little meat and wasn't tasty at all. The rice had a little saffron on it. When we received the bill the charged us twice for the bread 1.95. Usually the bread in restaurants is free. They are so desperate for money they give you bread without telling you that they will charge you for it. I learned a long time ago when a restaurant cuts the quality and quantity of their food, it will go out of business in a year. read more

Food was OK. Service was OK but their ability to accommodate left a lot to be desired and their understanding of the Groupon deal is a joke. My wife and I went for a Sat evening dinner. We had the $40 worth of food for $20 Groupon. We ordered the Kabob specials and asked if they would give us 1/2 salad / 1/2 rice instead of the full share of both. The answer was an emphatic "no." Not sorry, but we cannot accommodate you but "I asked the owner and he said No." Ok so we got over that one. Then when we presented the Groupon at the end of the meal they told us we had to order desert in order to be able to use the Groupon. We checked the Groupon carefully and no where did it mention this stipulation. We brought it to their attention and they said if we don't order desert they cannot deduct the Groupon. our second visit to this restaurant was a complete disappointment, as I'd really enjoyed it the first time, six months ago! the hummus no longer came with a round piece of bread that at least seemed house-made (even if it wasn't; I don't know whether it was) -- it now comes with lukewarm, supermarket pita triangles: not at all enjoyable. the hummus itself, my husband noticed by glancing behind us at the kitchen, was Tribe brand, which, while good, the restaurant should probably not leave gaping out considering I can buy the same tub they bought at Costco for the price of the portion (not to mention we've now determined the entire appetizer wasn't even made by the restaurant). food itself: husband really enjoyed his chicken dish with rice. I remain neutral about my salad. take it or leave it. now, my biggest reason for downgrading my original rating: the service was very off-putting. upon arrival, a waiter (or bus boy? I couldn't be sure) came to fill our water glasses. to get mine, he reached over me, grabbed my glass BY THE LIP, filled it, then returned it to my right side once again HOLDING IT BY THE LIP, with several fingers, no less. I was very thirsty but didn't touch it. a man, presumably the owner, took our order and tried to upsell me to add a "vegetarian" version of one of their rice dishes (now I'm curious whether he'd have charged the same for just the rice with no meat, actually, since they had no listing for vegetarian entree options) with my salad and seemed annoyed that I didn't want it (we ordered a trio of appetizers so even if they had listed vegetarian entrees I would have gone with a salad). when he brought out our appetizers, he plonked the dish down on top of my desert fork and spoon, and even though he saw me pulling them out from under the dish as he set down the bread, he didn't apologize or otherwise acknowledge it. we also asked him for a diet coke and a different water cup -- my husband explained about the fingers on the lip, and the owner (again, I think he was the owner, but maybe I'm wrong) just said ok and didn't apologize -- also, conveniently brought me a diet coke but never brought me a different water. I was too annoyed to bother asking again at that point. I really liked the waitress whom we mostly dealt with, except when she put down my salad, she also got in some of my silverware, then moved it by touching it on the parts that would go in my mouth -- and while I get that they totally touch them this way when placing them on the tables sometimes, I prefer not to think about it while I'm using it, which I could no longer do. I was given a gift certificate to this place. It was a gift certificate given to me by parents of a local soccer team I coached. It was from Summit Downtown Inc. You know, the town organization trying to spur dollars being spent in establishments such as Negeen. Well I was horrified to see the owner publicly question the validity of the certificate in front of other patrons. Additionally, we were supposed to get a certain discount for dining Monday-Friday. The owner proceeds to tell me I'm dining on the weekend even though his signage says otherwise. He had also given me a hard time when I came in with a Groupon a prior time. My in-laws are from the Middle East so I've eaten a ton of Middle Eastern cuisine over the years. The food here is slightly above average. But the owner's behavior towards people with coupons and gift certificates is completely unacceptable. If you want better Middle Eastern food with a lot less attitude (albeit less ambiance), I recommend Aida's Cozy Kitchen in Chatham. read more

I think at this point Im a kabab expert. The beef kobideh was absolutely disgusting, it smelled like damp wet clothes that have been left in the washing machine for days and didnt dry. The chicken and barg "bakhtiyar kabab" was wayyyyyyyyy overpriced. 3 pieces of chicken and 3 pieces of barg for $18? really. If it was amazing I wouldnt mind the price, but it was your average chicken kabab. Fountain drinks which are completely flat and filled with ice are $2.50 each with no refills. No yogurt/white sauce/or vinegar based dressing with entrees. No salad or soup included, only grilled (not even grilled just burned) onion tomato and green pepper. Wouldn't recommend, there are many great persian restaurants in NJ and the city, dont waste your money on overpriced nasty food. Service was excrutiating slow, I was starving and after 20 minutes of waiting after appetizer I see the owner bring the raw kababs on a skewer from the basement. :( On top of all that it was burning hot in the restaurant with fans turned on instead o AC. read more

In getting ready to visit with family in NJ, and checking out Groupons available, I came across a Groupon for Negeen Persian Grill. I was excited to have Persian food which I have always enjoyed and even keep a spice at home that a Persian friend brought back from a trip back home to Iran. And upon reviewing the website, including the menu and the story about the husband and wife team, I was looking forward to my meal. The restaurant wasn't very busy at all (a cold night) and we were the only ones in the restaurant initially. The service regarding filling up our small water glasses wasn't great and we had to keep asking the wife of the owner who was our server. I even said to her that maybe she should bring us an extra larger glass each so she didn't have to keep coming over to fill our small glasses, and she didn't. Until another two diners came in, she seemed to be busy reading a book. I will say, the hummus was delicious and my co-diner enjoyed his meal (a chicken & filet mignon kabob combination). As one who eats a lot of salmon, my salmon kabob didn't taste very fresh and was extremely fishy in taste that I had to eat each bite with rice/veggies to mask the bad taste. Since my co-diner is local and would possibly frequent again with his family, I didn't make a big deal about my dish since he seemed to like his and I didn't want to discourage him from coming back, since I don't live there. This restaurant seemed to be the only Persian restaurant nearby and my co-diner and his family like to eat out a different types of restaurants. When I asked for the bill so I could pay the difference over and above the Groupon amount, my bill included an 18% tip based upon the pre-Groupon amount plus tax. I personally never tip on tax and I should have been able to determine what tip I wanted to give vs. being told too unless I was advised this up front. And if/when I use a Groupon, I do tip on the pre-Groupon amount too. And if service is great at a restaurant, I may even tip more along the lines of 20% and at times even more. To me, the 18% tip on the pre-Groupon/pre-tax amount was too much. When I raised this as a question to the wife about the tip, she seemed to complain and tell stories that when people use Groupons, they don't tend to leave much of a tip, may tip on the Groupon amount not the total amount, and even seemed to complain about how one gent keeps coming in with a Groupon each week. I said something along the lines that maybe she should say something to that patron rather than keep accepting/allowing the person to keep using a new Groupon each time. She didn't seem to like that response. And she also didn't seem to understand what I was pointing out to her about the tip including the tax amount either. And when I raised the 18% tip as a question to the husband/owner who finally came over after the wife telling me what she did, his answer was along the lines of that this practice of charging 18% was suggested to him to do it this way, and something about not being an accountant (appearing as if he was blaming someone else and appearing to not understand how this was set up). The husband/owner seemed to make a comment about what kind of amount are we referring to that I had to pay extra (on the tax). As a principle based person, it is the principle here, not the amount. Based upon the conversations regarding the tip amount, and their attitudes, it was at this point that I told them how my fish didn't even seem to taste that fresh. I did take the leftovers home thinking maybe they would taste better cold the next day and if not, I would throw out. And there was some rice and veggies leftover too which I enjoyed. I do not recall seeing on the Groupon, nor the menu, nor their website, nor being told about this policy until they brought the bill and I had given her the Groupon at the time of ordering. I used my Visa to pay the amount on the bill including the 18% on the pre-Groupon amount plus tax. However I am thinking of calling my Visa company to dispute this since I felt forced to give an 18% tip and on top of the tax too. I recognize that businesses sign up with Groupon to get their name out there, generate more business, etc. So they should be taking into consideration that allowing Groupons may make them a little less money in the short run and hopefully help attract loyal customers, assuming the food/services are great. If a business feels that they are losing money by accepting a Groupon, then they shouldn't be doing business with Groupon vs. what seems to be taking it out on the customer. BTW, regarding the leftovers, of pieces of salmon served in total, only one that I ate the next day didn't taste very fishy the other two did. As a principle based person, this just didn't seem right which is why I decided to write this review. The look and feel of the restaurant seemed great however what a disappointment in how they seemed to manage their business and my salmon. read more

ZERO STAR. My wife and I went there on a Wednesday night with an expired Groupon because we had forgotten to use it in time; therefore, we were not able to use the promotional value. We could only apply the amount that we had paid for the Groupon, which never expires, so in essence, we would not get the discount, just the amount we paid for the Groupon, which is ok with us. When we show the Groupon to the lady at the end, she said she cannot accept it because it has expired. I tried to explained to her that the amount we had already paid for the Groupon never expires, and we are not asking for the promotional value, just the amount we had already paid for it, which was clearly stated on the Groupon. She became enraged and yelled at us for taking advantage of their small business operation and chastised Groupon for ruining their business. She called her husband over, and then he started yelling at us for not ordering more food to make up for the Groupon. I told him we are not asking for any discount and they are not giving us the promotional rate. We are paying the entire dinner with our own money which includes the face value of the Groupon that we had already paid for. They don't seem to understand. He kept saying we are using an expired Groupon and it's not good. I refused to back down, and they finally agreed to apply it. Mind you all their yelling was done in front of another party in the dining room. Apparently, this husband/wife team did not seem to care. They ruined what was supposed to be a nice quiet evening with my wife. Food was so-so, service was terrible, we never had our water glass filled until we asked during dinner, and she never fill it again when it was empty. On top of that, they charged us 18% gratuity and they never respond to our "Good Night" greeting when we left. I guess they don't want us to come back. Coupon or no coupon, DON'T GO THERE. One star is too good. The place was empty. After getting a watered down soda they made no attempt to replace it, basic attitude was we don't care. 20 minutes after eating I had to go back and use their bathroom. When I made it home I was violently sick, all night. I wrote to them advising I was sick, without asking for any compensation, just to notify them that their food was not fresh. I never received a response. They are clearly going out of business and are using up old food, and don't care. read more

Tried it for the second time. The service was excellent and the bill was correct, however the bread was stale...and cold; seemed like packaged pita. Portions are small but good. The rices are wonderful but some come with only some dishes, unlike Silk Road in Warren where they are ordered separately. Great rosewater & pistachio ice cream. If I feel like traveling, SR is a better choice; similar but better food. Maybe if they tweak the menu a little. Lovely decor. read more

To me going out to eat is not just about the food it is about the service. Rating this place the food was a 4 but service was -1. The owner/manager seemed to be the person waiting on us, he didn't break a smile not even one time. When it came time for me to present my Living Social voucher, he flat out told me it was for dinner only. I basiclally explained that it was not stated on the voucher I had. Lucky thing Lilving social provides amazing customer service, I called and let them know the issue and they refunded me the total of what I had paid for the voucher. So we basically paid him straight with no tip and will not be visiting again. What a shame. Good food but the people were just not right.. He was very defensive and made no apologies. It is the responsiblity of the restaurant to list all rules on the deals they set up through Groupon and Living Social. Certainly not the consumer's fault. read more

This is a great local spot for delicious Persian food. We love the kashke badamjan appetizer which is a smoky eggplant purée served with freshly made pita. The shirazi salad and stuffed grape leaves are also excellent choices. For entrees I love the zheresk polo which is a chicken kebab over rice with barberries and toasted almonds. The lamb dishes are also fantastic. I've read the reviews complaining about the service and have never had a problem. We have eaten here at least ten times and the owner and staff have always been friendly and professional. read more

I was pretty disappointed with this restaurant. Thought it would be much better with the previous reviews. The interior is slightly cramped and the a/c doesn't work very well. The service was ok, but nothing spectacular. I got the fillet/chicken skewer combo. It was nicely marinated, but quite over-cooked. The fillet was extremely dry and almost inedible. The presentation was pretty lacking...a pile of rice with a few pieces of meat and grilled veggies along the edges. My wife's dish had the same problems. For the price, I was expecting a lot more....flavor, cooking-technique, style, presentation, quantity....something to justify the price. It wasn't completely bad, so I'll give it the 2 stars. read more

Wow. What can I say about that gormeh sabsi! As good as any I've had and I've had it plenty. We were greeted by the owners who were very nice and hospitable and took a lot of pride into making the food like we were in their home. Loved the kabob kubideh and the eggplant starter dish as well. The worst service that I have received in any restaurant, we have a groupon coupon and the owner told me that he is not making profit if we don't order more food. We told him that we can buy what we can eat. We have a 60$ coupon and he told me that out of the 30$ I paid, 15$ goes for groupon and he get only 15$ out of it. A group of my friends and I choose to meet at Negeen Persian Grill for dinner on a Monday Night. We checked to make sure they were open on Monday and they were. We were happy about that. We meet once a month and always look for new places I can not give this place a recommendation. Maybe the take out is better than what we experienced. The service was lacking which was sad, since we were the only dinners in the restaurant at 6:00 PM . We all ordered and had to wait 30 minutes, for our entries. I wonder if this was done since we did not order appetizers. It was fine, because this is our chance to chat . However, when our meals arrived we were all disappointed. I ordered the lamb, it was over done ( crispy) and I received one lolly pop size chop for $20.00 Two of my friends ordered Filet Mignon which looked more like round and they asked for sharper knives. Another friend ordered the shrimp and scallops. She did not complain but it looked like they took one scallop and quartered it. We did have to ask for pita and they brought one pita, which was not warmed and served out of the package whole. We will not be going back. read more

The food here is adequate. The rice was plentiful and tasty. The meat was fine. We ordered kabobs. I asked if they came with vegetables and was told yes. We each got one wedged of nearly raw if warm onion. One piece of green pepper and one pievce of tomato. My big issue is with the service and attitude. We walked in to a nearly empty restaurant at 7:15 on a Thursday night. When we indicated that we did not care to sit at the only table for two in the restaurant (there were two of us) as it looked cramped and the cold air from any opening of the door would have been hitting us directly in the back we were told that it was a n awful lot of work for them to clear the extra place settings at the table for four. He didn't complain about this once, he complained about this numerous times. If I didn't have a groupon I would have walked out at that point. The rest of the service was no better. I ordered a cup of tea and was asked whether I wanted a cup or a pot, Having no idea what size either was or how much they cost this was not a simple question and there was enough back and forth with the waitress that you'd think she would have gone directly to get it (especially since there were only two other tables that had people she might have been serving). But I never did get my tea. On top of this they automatically placed a 18% tip in the bill. Ive never heard of such a thing for a table of two in the states. I won't be returning. read more

I had middle eastern food before and it was very good. However I will never go there again. This was a big disappointment, I was really forward to have a great meal. I would not recommend anyone set foot in this god forsaken place. There is halfway decent Persian food, but take it from a Persian who grew up on this stuff, it isn't anything special. There are 3 substantially better Persian restaurants in a 5 mile radius of this place and if you want to eat Persian food go to one of those. The server and owner of this place is an absolute asshole. When my family and I went here we even got the slightly better treatment than most because we are Iranian and spoke Farsi with the owner, and still felt like he hated every one of us. The food is very overpriced and not fresh at all. I walked back near the kitchen to go to the bathroom, AND FOUND HIM MICROWAVING all of our appetizers. He charged us extra for the two pieces of bread that he brought out with the 4 appetizers our table ordered. Not only did he not tell us it was extra, but when we found out it was we couldn't believe it. It might seem strange to some to expect these appetizers to come with free bread, but all of them are essentially considered To be dips in Iran that no one in their right mind would eat without bread. The entire table ordered the specialty dough drink and without being told were charged extra every time he refilled it, and we repeatedly asked for water that never came. The owner basically treats everyone like he doesn't want you in his restaurant, and then rips you Off at every chance possible. I could maybe understand going here if there wasn't any good Persian food nearby, but there is! Just moved to the area and we're trying out all the different places around town. Found a Groupon deal so we thought we'd try this place out. We were seated quickly and the hostess was kind. Once we informed the waiter that we had a groupon (you have to inform them that you're using a deal coupon), I think the service started downhill from there. We're two adults and a child and we ordered a combination for 2 for $43 and a shrimp/scallop special. We were told by the waiter that the owner (who is also the chef), would like those with groupons to order more , "like appetizers or desserts". We thought that what we ordered would be more than enough for 2 adults and a kid so we said that we'll probably order a dessert (we usually do when dining out anyways). The food came and I didn't think that the platter for 2 was worth $43. The filet mignon kabobs were thin slices of beef, not cubes, the chicken was the same. The $20 plate of shrimp/scallop platter was 4 medium sized shrimp with 3 scallops the size of quarters with rice...... Seriously? for $20! I think they adjust what they serve if you mention groupon or any of the coupon specials. After dessert, when we went to pay with the groupon, we were told that it was not valid for 3 people, even though the value is up to $60. The male owner came out and very rudely told us we needed to order something else. I said, we'll take a kid's meal to-go but he said that it didn't count towards a "meal. He then said loudly that "you know, we need to make money". Why go ahead and cut a deal with groupon if that's your thinking? It was just embarrassing to me as a customer to be treated like this. Doesn't he know that ususally people try a place with groupon to see if the food AND service is good so that they will come back?! So I ended up ordering another platter to-go. They of course added a mandatory 18% to our bill for treating us poorly. Overall: Food is ok (my husband grills better meats on our grill at home), service is TERRIBLE and be prepared to be treated even worse if you're there with a deal coupon. Owner is not kid-friendly. I have a 12 year old who asked some questions regarding the menu. He was not rude but dismissive. The food was fine but the prices we felt were high for what it was. They charge for the bread that you need for the dips, unless something has changed since we were there. Overall, there are better options in the area. Was hopeful ordering here, went twice. They've got a large vat of "entree" that everyone gets no matter what entree you order, or that's my experience. I ordered twice, ordered different things both times, got same not very good "entree" both times. Ingredients listed on menu did not match dish received.
