We had reservations for Sunday at 6. We arrived at 5:30 and was seated right away. It was not crowded at all. Our waitress was super friendly and upbeat but she immediately let us know that there was only one order of fried chicken left if we wanted to order it. We were not ordering fried chicken so it wasn't an issue but I thought it was odd that this is an item they would run out of on a Sunday. I ordered the chicken fried steak which came with mashed potatoes and greens. My husband ordered the catfish dinner which came with hush puppies, grits and greens. The food arrived pretty quick and was hot. My chicken fried steak was just ok. The mashed potatoes were good and the greens were the worst I've had. It was like a pound of sugar in them. Caught me off guard. It was so sweet that it was inedible. My husband's fried catfish was prepared perfectly! (We asked for it to be fried hard) It was hot, fresh and well seasoned! The hush puppies were a bit dry and taste like they roll it in the same fish fry as the catfish as it had a slight fishy taste but the grits were amazing! It had a white gravy/sauce on top of it and it was just soo good! I had wished I ordered his plate even tho we swapped a few forkfuls. One thing I noticed was the menu had changed. Based on other yelp posts, there were items that I had in mind I wanted to try when I got there like the egg rolls. The menu is vastly downsized from when they first opened which was a bummer. Usually when a restaurant downsizes their menu by that much, it's usually a sign it won't be open much longer. So go while you can if it's a place you've been wanting to try. Service was solid too, everybody attentive without doing too much. Drinks: I got the drink flight and I gotta keep it real... this was my only real complaint. Out of the four drinks, only ONE was good. I don't remember all the names, but the golden one with Jack Honey was cool. The other three? Easy passes. For $42, that ain't it. 3/10 Appetizers: Now let's talk food. The biscuits are CRAZY. Soft, buttery, fresh, and that pepper jam takes it to another level. They even put the jam in the hush puppies which is a power move. 10/10 The crab cakes were fire too. All flavor, real crab meat, no filler nonsense. Definitely something I'd order again. 9/10 Main Plate: I ordered the fried fish with Brussels sprouts and mac & cheese. The fish was top tier. Fried perfect, seasoned right, crispy but not greasy. 8/10 The Brussels were mixed with sweet potatoes, good balance, good flavor, just nothing that made me lose my mind. 7/10 The mac & cheese wasn't for me. Most of the food was really good! A standout was the cheddar chive biscuits, u liked them a lot more than Red Lobsters especially paired with the whipped butter and sweet spicy jam. The BLAT was so good! The pork belly had great flavor and the bread was nice and crispy! I probably would not get the deviled eggs or Mac again but you can't love everything. My favorite dessert by far was the banana pudding! I wish it was a bigger portion like the peach cobbler in the martini glass. The service was okay, the server didn't really know the answer to any of my menu questions and had to go ask. He was not very attentive, but it wasn't bad service. The theme is southern, has lots of animals throughout, and some Jonas brothers Easter eggs for fans! On recommendation from friends, we decided to get dinner here before going to a concert. The comfort food on the menu looked good as well as some great beer prices...23 oz beers for 13 dollars on the strip....sign me up!! Hub and I shared the chicken tenders that came with some bbq sauce and another tasty sauce. We also got the biscuits..hub loved these...they came with a spicy jam and some butter. We got a side of mashed potatoes with a requested white gravy and the Brussels sprouts....there were more carrots than Brussels which was odd, but all of the food was extremely tasty. Our friends got the shrimp and they really like that...they also raved on the biscuits with spicy jam. We will definitely be back...the inside was fun and they had the football game on. Came to Nellie's on a recommendation from a coworker. It did NOT disappoint. The interior is large, open and clean. Service was good but nothing exceptional. THE FOOD was the star! The prices were high, but thats to be expected in Las Vegas at a strip hotel. Highlight: Chicken & Waffles (5/5) $35 - the waffles were a tasty side for the main show, THE CHICKEN. It's honestly one of the best fried chicken pieces I've ever had. Crispy thick batter, super juicy inside and topped off with the hot sauce it was incredible. I wish I could give a higher score. However there were so many things that made this just a solid three. First off they open at 11. We stopped in at 11:10 and there was nobody in the restaurant except for one group that had just been seated the host let us know that they weren't going to start seating for another five minutes unless we had a reservation. I just always find that strange when a restaurant opens at a certain time and they don't start seating what the harm would be in having people just sit down and letting them know it may be a couple minutes before their server is with them. So we did wait for five minutes until they started seating. We were seated in a nice open area. I really like the design of the restaurant so that's why everything else is disappointing. We ordered two drinks and the presentation was beautiful. However they put them on saucers and because the drinks are overflowing, they tend to stick to those saucers, and I almost spilled my drink a couple of times, when the saucer stuck to the drink but the drinks were delicious but would be better served on a napkin or maybe something with a cork absorbing bottom. We ordered the still cool and 2043. Next up the appetizers. We decided to give the deviled eggs, a try, and these were so scrumptious.. my only complaint about this is a lot of the egg whites were misshapen and missing. I get it you peel eggs they're imperfect, but I would expect more from a restaurant where you're paying as much as you do here also, this is just me but they serve five eggs and I wondered what happened to the other half of the last one I would've been happier with either four or six pieces. Next up for mains we went with the mac & cheese, the chicken strips and the chicken and dumplings. Let me start with the chicken and dumplings. I think this is the one I was most disappointed with it was so watery and there was barely any chicken or dumplings in the bowl. It's like we had gotten the end of a pot. It was more of a chicken soup than anything else. Next up the chicken strips, they're nothing special just very basic even a little dry in some places. The mac & cheese was just a little bit grainy, but the flavor was excellent. Finally for dessert we had the banana pudding. I love the presentation however, again this is just a standard banana pudding. I myself make a better one. I would expect more from a restaurant of this caliber where the final bill with tip is $160 and finally the bathrooms. I felt like I was in a gas station going into the restrooms and my husband said the same when he visited the men's restroom.... worst restrooms in Las Vegas. I always love eating here when I stay at The Grand. I had the shrimp and grits and they were so good. The restaurant is pretty big so my dad, mom and I were easily able to get a seat without reservations. The restaurant is located close to the monorail entrance/exit, so if you're staying at another hotel, you can take the monorail down and not have to walk far. read more

We went for a late afternoon large lunch and dinner. I had the Traditional chicken dinner. Very good portions as with anything else though in one of the hotels you pay the casino tax ie increased prices. I didn't really take any pics it's just like a pricey sports bar. The food was ok. We came to Nellie's for an early dinner before seeing Ka. The food was mostly good with a few perplexing stumbles. Brace yourself, as always, for Strip prices. The best features: huge portion of crunchy, tender, and juicy fried catfish; plenty of plump, clean-tasting crab and crisp veggies in the crab salad. The ordinary: the fries were pale and not crisp. They could have used a little more time in the fryer to match the perfect breading on the catfish. The greens were fine, without much pork flavor. The disappointment: the vaunted biscuits were doughy and soft without any notable flavor. It's not brain surgery to serve a crisp biscuit -- heck, Popeye's and Red Lobster can do it, and so can anyone popping open a can of Pillsbury. I brought the leftovers home and toasted them in the convection oven the next day, making them 500% better. For $11, Nellie's can't handle that? Also, I discovered after mixing the crab salad together that the "citrus" included chunks of lemon in addition to chunks of orange. I never want to bite into a square of lemon! Has eating lemons become a thing and I didn't get the memo? I had to comb through the salad to pick them out. Sheesh, put some lemon juice in the dressing or some zest on the crab. Inside the mgm Grand place looks cool but a bit empty at 6pm. Hostess not very welcoming. The waiter was friendly. I got the country fried steak. I love Southern food, so I had to try Nellie's, especially since I was staying at the MGM. Nellie's was started in Belmont, NC by the father of musicians the Jonas Brothers as an ode to his grandmother Nellie. The Vegas location is almost 3 years old. It's located right by the Monorail station at MGM. It's a fairly large restaurant with a large bar and live entertainment. They used to serve lunch and brunch but now just offer dinner. The menu is full of Southern staples at elevated Las Vegas Strip prices. If they're on the menu, I always order fried green tomatoes and shrimp and grits. Nellie's had both. The tomatoes ($23) were decent, supposedly crusted with pecans, but it seemed like a regular breading to me. They came drizzled with a roasted red pepper sauce with some greens and pickled onions and ranch dipping sauce. I also ordered one of their specialties, a Southern Roll, which is a fried egg roll stuffed with BBQ chicken, mac and cheese, bacon and drunken collards, served with a sweet chili sauce and the same greens and pickled onions. It was fine, but cost $17 for one. And the dipping sauces both came in those little plastic cups meant for take-out, which cheapened both dishes. The shrimp and grits ($37) were a bit non-traditional in that the grits were not creamy, but rather fried triangular cakes akin to polenta. They may have been crisp at one point, but not when served. The 5 blackened shrimp were tasty, as was the Cajun cream sauce. The menu mentioned a pico de gallo topping, but that was non-existent. I also got a trio of sides for $28. I chose the fried okra, drunken collard greens and mac and cheese. All were good, but the ranch dipping sauce served with the okra again was in a plastic cup. For dessert, I ordered the seasonal cobbler ($15), which was peach, served with vanilla ice cream. The peaches were canned, but the topping was tasty. Although Nellie's has a full bar and cocktail menu, they do not offer any mocktails, so I made do with iced tea. A pleasant but pricy-ish meal. I would return to try their fried chicken, fried catfish or country fried steak. read more

No, Nellie! Nellie's Southern Kitchen is a restaurant that is approaching its 3rd anniversary in the MGM Grand restaurant row. Notable for being owned by a bunch of people named Jonas, it seems to be a combination of sports bar, cocktail bar, and soul food restaurant. I stopped in for dinner with some friends, and we shared a number of food items. Meatloaf ($35.00): a really good start. A tasty meatloaf with gravy is the core of this dish, and it goes very well with the included sides. The mashed potatoes aren't Robuchon-y, but they're delicious. The green beans are cooked nicely too; I believe they were sauteed with some pimento peppers. Chicken and Dumplings ($33.00): not a great main. Some of the chicken was tough and chewy, and the dumpling I got was mushy and doughy, not something I even wanted to finish. That's really unfortunate because it appeared to be served with a good side. Well, the biscuits were a bit dense and not that special either, really. It was the cinnamon honey butter that was airy and smooth and balanced and really addictive, and that's something I might actually come back for. Chicken and Waffles ($35.00): oh look, more cinnamon honey butter! Now that we've got that out of the way, the waffles were actually quite good too, and the strawberries and syrup were good accompaniments. However, the fried chicken was not anything to write home about. It makes me regret not ordering the bone-in stuff. Trio of Sides ($28.00): sounded like a good way to round out the meal, but I could've done without it. While the Four-Cheese Mac and the Drunken Collards were nice, they weren't really worth it. The Bourbon and Brown Sugar Yams were a bit lacking in those two flavors too. I did enjoy my time there. I felt able to relax in the lofty space, and I appreciated that it wasn't dimly lit. Some of the March Madness games were on the TVs, and the live musician was doing a solid job covering both contemporary songs and older hits. Service was solid, although the kitchen seemed a tad slow to get all of our entrees out. I'll chalk it up to the restaurant being a bit busy I guess. Nellie's Southern Kitchen is a hit-or-miss spot that could be a viable option if you're staying at MGM Grand, need to use MGM Rewards comps, and/or simply prioritize "vibes." Me as well as 15 of my team members decided to reserve a dinner at this location since it reopened after its month shut down. I will say that we absolutely enjoyed our time here with great food and plenty of drinks. The ambiance was very comfortable, clean with great lighting. I decided to try the following * CHICKEN 'N' WAFFLES * This was delicious. So good. * ANSON MILLS GRITS * Got this as a side and they were amazing. The receptionist as well as our host were extremely friendly and attentive. The decor was really nice and they even have a bar area. I ordered one of their newer menu items, the SAIL AWAY MAHI FISH TACOS. They were $33 and very underwhelming. The mahi was perfectly cooked, however the corn tortilla would have been better warm or slightly toasted. The pineapple salsa and crisp slaw did not pair well together. The pineapple salsa was big chunks of pineapple that overpowered the plate, and the slaw had no flavor. More drizzle of the hot aioli and seasoned slaw would have elevated this meal. It only came with 3 tacos for $33 which was a bit steep. A side of chips and salsa, rice, or even beans would have made this plate more fulfilling. My friend ended up sharing her green beans with me. The green beans were okay, tasted like green beans sautéed in garlic, more seasoning would have made those more enjoyable as well. Overall, glad I got a chance to give it a try. This was one of the worst meals I have had. I came in with high hopes too! We started out with the biscuit appetizer and they were SO dry. The jams they served with it were just okay. Then the chicken and Mac and cheese came out. You can tell in this photo how dry they both were. Literally chicken jerky. I was here about 4:30 on a Friday and the place was completely empty. The Southern Chicken Salad Sandwich is amazing and, apparently, under rated on the menu. I don't see many photos of it in the Yelp reviews so I have to assume that chicken salad is somewhat less ordered. But I was at the restaurant for lunch and wanted something simple and hand-held. I'm really glad that I ordered it because it was unlike any chicken salad that I'd had before. I couldn't tell you what herbs or seasonings gives this sandwich its flavor, but it is unique and delicious. It was my last day and I wasn't looking for an expensive lunch or a particularly "Vegas" experience, so this casual place fit the bill. I'm not implying that it isn't nice; it is. But it's casual and comfortable, which is what I needed. They only points that I'll take off is the fact that I lost my credit card at the restaurant. Now of course, that is my fault. But, I left the card in the check book and wish that the server had given it to the bar, the host stand, or the hotel security. I checked back later that day, in the evening, and the next morning before I left. Nothing. The hostess on the following morning suggested that it might still be in the book, and I asked if we could go back and have a look, but was denied. I had been eyeing this place. First off, the chairs are heavy!!!! Why? I understand quality but dang. We started with the biscuits and they seemed a little too dark, smothered them with butter and it was yummy. The jam that came with it was nothing special, actually tasted store bought. For entree we had the fried chicken. It was good but not the best I've had. The meat could have been more tender, the crunch was there but something was missing from the spices. The collard greens needed salt, because they use an alcohol it added more sugar and salt would offset that. The Mac and cheese was not good. The noodles were over cooked and the sauce seemed like it was added and tossed in a pan right before serving. I sent that back and got the sweet potatoes, they were amazing! Went here for dinner with friends last night when we were in Las Vegas. This was my first-time here and was recommended by my friends. This restaurant is located inside the MGM Grand on the Las Vegas Strip. We had an enjoyable time and meal while we dining here. This is my first time having Southern comfort food in a very long while so it was a treat. We ordered a few appetizers to share (fried green tomatoes and the biscuits that came with jam and a cinnamon-flavored cream which were quite delicious). 5/5 I shared the fried chicken dinner (5/5) with my friend while the other members of our party mainly chose to have the chicken and waffles (5/5), Mac n Cheese skillet (5/5), Summer Salad (5/5) and Hawg Hill Pulled Pork Sandwich (5/5). Service was great, food delivered fast, medium sound in dining area so great for conversations with dates, friends, or just a meal with a good time. The chicken was MOIST! The crust was top notch, ate every crumb. Sides-potatoes were flavorful, creamy and some secret ingredient that made us want a bucket of mash. We chose Nellie's Southern Kitchen for our Thursday night dinner because 1 they have one in Belmont near where we live so we can compare and two we hadn't eaten at a "southern" soul food restaurant yet. This restaurant is big, but it is incredibly loud. There is a stage where the Jonas Brothers and others perform from time to time. I think I also recall seeing a bar. We started off with the biscuits (because we love biscuits) but they took forever to come out of the kitchen, and they were over cooked. They give you cinnamon butter and strawberry jam. I don't usually like strawberry jam but this one was good! It's not too sweet. After 45 minutes our food came out. We both ordered the fried chicken. The chicken was the highlight for sure. It was crispy but extremely juicy and tender on the inside... it's hard to do that. Mac and cheese and collard greens also come with the chicken. I loved the Mac and cheese, not sure about my Mimi. It was soft and gooey and cheesy, that's the type of Mac and cheese I like. And the collard greens are good, but it's spicy. It's drenched in a type of hot sauce and pork is added inside it. Oh and by the way, their sweet tea is pretty good. Besides all of this, Nellie's southern kitchen gets a 4. Our server was nice, but service was incredibly slow. Nice staff, fast service & pretty yummy breakfast. They do also serve lattes (non flavored) but was not listed on the menu FYI! I just kept it simple and had eggs + biscuits & gravy. I will say their other items looks delicious! It's inside of MGM Grand. read more

Good place to go to dinner if you're seeing a show at MGM. Highlights at our dinner were of course the fried chicken, corn cobs and also the hush puppies. Don't waste your money in the calories on the mac & cheese or fried green tomatoes though. The macaroni and cheese was disappointing because it wasn't cheesy at all. Also the fried green tomatoes were tiny little slivers, not the big thick slices you'd expect. read more
