My sister recommended this little drive thru while we were in town for my nephew's graduation. We decided to stop in for some milkshakes to tide us over until dinner. I ordered the peach and my husband and mother stuck to the more classic chocolate and vanilla. They were all delicious and hit the spot after a day sitting in the sun. The food was okay but the service was atrocious! My husband and I stopped in just for a fry. We ordered and they asked us to pull forward. And then we waited....and waited....and and waited. For 25 minutes we waited for ONE FRY. Finally my husband and I gave up and decided to ask for a refund. The girl who took our order was chatting with her friends who were standing outside the window and made my husband wait an extra 5 minutes at the window for her to finish her gossip and when asked for a refund she was very snotty with him and told him the fries were almost done and she wouldn't issue a refund. 3 minutes later a total of 33 MINUTES we got our fries that by that time were cold. After driving hours without seeing a decent sized town we decide to stop here to grab a bite... Crossing our fingers we read reviews for different restaurants in town, this place seemed to be decent... We pulled up one person ahead of us and somehow still ended up waiting for over 20 minutes. We ordered a cheeseburger, hot dog, and two fries...This was the worst burger I have ever had:( there was soooo much mustard and ketchup combined with a ton of lettuce that my my burger was ice cold and saturated with condiments. We had to ask for condiments, salt and pepper and we also asked for napkins but we're told (oh no they are at the bottom of your bag)... Of course they were not.. So now I have been left with and an inedible burger leaking condiments and no napkins. The hotdog was soggy as well from soo much of their special sauce. What a waste of time and money! Anyone who sees this should be aware that they do not accept credit or debit cards? At this point, you would think you're more likely to find a place that doesn't take cash. Do not go if you are in a hurry. My shake has all but melted while waiting for my food. Still here waiting.... Looks like the other car in the lot has probably been here longer. The peach shakes a little on the side of lacking any peach flavor. I can taste a hint of it if I really focus. I just got my food. I won't wait to put a rating as I didn't know you could mess up curly fries this badly. Half are crispy, half are soggy. The bag has layer of grease. Enough said. I decided to wait and give it the benefit of the doubt. Avocado Swiss burger..... Bottom bun was soggy from the over abundance of ranch, the avocado was mushy and didn't taste right. Been here twice in La Grande now and have not been disappointed! Service is a little slow but they have great burgers so I'm happy!:) The tater tots are bomb too! Nells is your classic drive-through greasy burger joint. Last time I went, they had hand-dipped corn dogs that were great and love the curly fries. If they have a signature "thing" it's the specialty drink menu. They make shakes and cream drinks and other mixes of soda, juice, and flavored syrups. Try one if you're feeling adventurous. I have lived in this area 21 years this month. And have been to Nell's exactly 3 times. When my Hub. and I first moved here, when I took some clients through. And today because no am moving soon and it is my Birthday! Now to the bad news... I really do not know what all the hoopla is all about! Got a double cheese burger. Check. Fries. Check. Milkshake. Check. Okay...I asked what went onto the hamburger... Special sauce, pickles and onions, okay. Didn't think you had to ask for lettuce, tomato, isn't that just the usual? Or even mayo? Drove away with great anticipation, parked at Bi Mart parking lot and dug in! First the fries.... Hmm a little salty, couple more fries with special sauce this time. Still way to salty. Started on my double cheese burger with anticipation, wait, what, only a few onions, special sauce and the meat and cheese? Where was the tomato, the lettuce? Another bite or two, it is way to salty! No!! This can't be happening! This was to be my birthday dinner to!! So there were a lot of crows hanging around so yelled out the window if they wanted dinner they can have it! Special little drive-thru! No place to sit down, just so you know if you're planning some stops along your road trip. There is usually a rather long line for service Friday and Saturday night--it's a popular place and making the food and fancy drinks takes a while. That said, I love it! HOLY COW!!!! This place was great!! Stopped on our road trip from Chicago and ordered the bacon cheeseburgers, an Oreo shake and the tater tots and fries. Burgers came with special sauce, which is delicious, pickles and onions. The curly fries were crazy good and the small was plenty! I would rate this place higher, but the people who work here couldn't be more slow. To order a drink and get it, it takes over 35 minutes. No this drink doesn't make you pee gold or anything of the sort. Everything on the menu is extremely overpriced and the young teenage girls that work there actually look at you and discuss when you do not give them a tip. We stopped here on our way thru town. We use Yelp all the time for restaurant reviews so we thought we'd give it a try. We ordered steak burgers, fries, onion rings and chocolate shakes. The chocolate shakes weren't that great. Runny and way to much chocolate syrup. The steak burgers weren't that great either. The onion rings were just so/so. But the French fries were awesome. We'd stop there again just for the fries. But if you're in a hurry this is not the place for you. This is not your typical mcdonalds fast drive thru!! read more

Our group of 5 was initially very excited by the extensive menu. However, the wait was unbearable. In fact, it still is. We are still here.

I love the curly fries and pink sauce and come to Nel's just for that. However, the last two times I stopped there, the service was non-existant. The second to last time I was there, the girls were inside yukking it up and never looked at the car outside, going back and forth in front of the speakers to try to get someones attention. I could see them inside, laughing it up...after about ten minutes ( hey- I was curious) they finally saw me and asked for my order - and when I pulled up to the window I asked the girl if she had not seen me or heard my car and she said no. Really? The radio must have been up way loud? I went back a week later and this time I could not see anyone inside. I waited for 15 minutes outside their window ...then finally knocked on it....LOUDLY. Again ...curious to see their excuse. Someone finally came to the window...laughing. I told her I had been out here for fifteen minutes and she said they had been mopping the floor. Really? I looked in the window? No one was in sight. They are probably getting stoned in the cooler? I love the fries and crazy drinks....but it's just not worth waiting 10-15 minutes to get their attention and then another 10-20 minutes to cook an a single order of fries when there is no one else they are waiting on. read more

Great place to eat! Very friendly and helpful staff. One thing I can say for all others coming to nells for a meal is please be patient everything is prepared as you order it. Also all munchies come with fry sauce if you would like any additional sauces it is a additional cost of $.25 or you may exchange the fry sauce. read more
