Nelson Westerberg is a disaster. I am utterly disgusted by this company. On the move the broke furniture, then insisted that I sign an electronic doc saying everything was out of the house but refused a final walk through and ran away as quickly as they could. We went in the basement and there was still loads of boxes there they were supposed to take. We had to ship it via the post office for thousands of dollars, as the house needed to be vacated within two days. I complained and they resisted and fought me on it. Finally, they offered a few hundred dollars as compensation. On arrival after going through the boxes that were delivered there were numerous items missing. Either lost or stolen. I asked them to look for the missing boxes but there was no response. Please know that this company uses contractors. In this case, it was a father-son team assisted by a local person. They complained about having to live in a place not as "nice" as my house (and it wasn't a luxury home). Further these are not employees but contractors. They don't use employees to move people. Third guy was just some random person they hired just for this job. This is who was losing and stealing our possessions. Don't use this company under any circumstances. read more

We were referred to Nelson Westerberg by someone we trusted (a top-end refinisher of some of our antique furniture) and this was important because we knew we'd be transporting our furniture cross country and it was important to use a high quality mover who would take care of our valuables and our move. Also, because our situation was rather complicated (moving refinished furniture from the refinisher, our Baby Grand piano from the Steinway store, and some items from 3rd party storage) - we felt our move required good and clear communication. So one complaint, our coordinator Bridgette was very slow to respond and didn't return calls - right up until a couple of days before our cross country move. As a result, we communicated by email only (against my better judgement) which led to numerous miscommunications during the move. A single 30 minute phone call (which, unfortunately we never had) would have likely avoided a number of these miscommunications. Our move was complicated enough that NW should have taken the time to actually speak to us about some of the specific details around our move. A second complaint - because my move was as an individual as opposed to a Corporate move, I had to pay 110% of the original estimate (based on weight, which we knew was high) - up front - before the move even began. So I was out of pocket for a very large bill (more than $26k), and then when the move was completed, we were informed that NW would reimburse us the credited amount - almost $2500, in 6-8 weeks. So I had to pay 110% in advance, and the move itself took about 7-10 days, but NW took almost 2 months to reimburse us. Thirdly, the packers in our home state (Wisconsin) did not mark many items, and misplaced some important hardware (unmarked, and placed in random boxes) - which led to incorrect re-assembly at the final location - some of this was our antique, refinished furniture that we were trying to protect. Fourthly, a baby grand piano was packed by reportedly expert "3rd party piano moving experts" improperly, resulting in damage to the piano during our move. We are in the midst of handling claims for the damaged items, so it is hard to say how that will all go. I may be following up on this site with an update for claims. Overall - the entire experience was poor, and left a bad taste in our mouth about the quality of NW as a mover. As a result I cannot recommend them, despite their self-professed reputation as "the best". From the other Yelp reviews I read here, it is clear that in reality, customer experience with NW is at best mixed, and actually quite poor. In our case we were heavily influenced by the one personal recommendation, but based on what we've learned I would not use NW again, and I'd recommend that anyone else with other options should probably exercise those options. I will say that the driver Stephen, and his crew that accompanied him cross country were very good, and I'd highly recommend them. His direct communication with us really helped us plan our cross country flights, and saved us a lot of trouble, so at least there was a silver lining in what was otherwise a very disappointing move. I think this proves that effective communication is the most important aspect in a move, and in that regard NW failed overall. read more

Botched my moving date for a new job. Confirmed date with them weeks ago and never received any follow-ups. When I follow up with them, they tell me they never confirmed anything (despite an email from them specifically listing my target date for a move and confirming with them over a call when they surveyed my house for what will be moved). VERY unprofessional and entirely UNresponsive. Only used them because my employer required it. Otherwise, would NEVER choose them willingly. read more

Nelson Westerberg (Atlas Moving agent) is the worst company we have ever dealt with. They have robbed us of our sanity and our money. We hired them to move us from the Chicago Area to the Denver area (a ~$14K move) and they have provided the worst customer service I have ever seen. First, our household goods were loaded up in Chicago. They promised in writing a delivery date in Denver of June 23rd. After numerous calls and little response, our goods were "delivered" on July 2nd - a whopping 10 days late with no explanation other than they were out of drivers. And I use "delivered" in "air quotes" as our items were stuffed to the gills inside the center of a semi-truck. When they opened the side doors I was shocked on how our personal items were stacked on top of each other. Almost every box was crushed, and many plastic bins were broken. They also opened bottom panels on the semi, and literally pieces, parts and items started falling out from multiple households right onto the street which the drivers had to sort though (asking us what was ours and what was not?!?) After going through all of the boxes finally, we have discovered that we are missing parts to so many things (shoe racks, 3 metal shelving units, our 2 mountain bikes are missing the hubs, hardware for assembling tables, legs for tables, etc...) I cannot list them all. Our treasured dining room table was smashed underneath the contents of another family's load (they do not even try to seperate them) and all 4 legs broken. There are so many parts missing, we are still discovering issues as of today, July 29th. They found our log rack and the parts to one of our tables in the cab of another company's semi 7 days after the delivery date. I submitted a claim on July 8th, which was an extremeley detailed typed letter with forms attached. I courteously explained what the issues were and submitted a fair amount of the claim along with receipts. However, their claims department has been no help at all, and I have received no contact from them other than 1 e-mail on July 10th saying they have received my claim, and someone picking up the dining room table and taking it for (what we have been told is 4 weeks) repair. I called them today and they said I needed to fill out another form. I feel based upon the # of damaged items, missing items, the quality of their service, uber-poor execution and uncaring attitude that this may be the worst company on the planet. I am very sad to post this review as I really strive to post positive reviews, but when I know I have been ripped off, I have little recourse. If anyone from Nelson Westerberg reads this I suggest you pay my claim. read more

This was my third long distance move with NW and all have been fantastic This was the hardest as we stored furniture with them for 13 months--they are so accommodating as they recognized moving is stressful!! Before moving, I thought that the other 1-star reviews were probably people that just want to complain about everything. WRONG. I believe everything these people claim went wrong, because I experienced exactly the same. Firstly, they sound very cordial over the phone and when they come in to do the in-home estimate they are very professional and courteous. The movers themselves are pretty friendly... they've probably got little to do with the corporate and scheduling end of things. They informed me early on in the process that a move would take place between 8-10 am. That's not such a bad window, so I woke up early and prepared for their arrival. I get a call around 830 telling me they are on the way, I am pleased. At 10, no shows, no calls. I call THEM and am informed that the driver switched a pickup with me and someone else so he wouldn't be arriving until noon. at 11:55, the movers show up. They actually got stuff packed away pretty quickly, and like I said, friendly enough. But with no effort to inform me of a delay, not cool. During the waiting time I called their offices to request some sort of discount because I had my schedule arranged around their arrival in the morning. My entire days schedule was screwed because of this. The woman told me she would get back to me... and of course never did call me until today - AFTER the moving guys already called me to tell me they were on the way! She called and "apologized" for not informing me sooner, and of course didn't forget or waste ant time to charge me the full amount for the move which was not prompt on both ends. To their credit, the delivery guys on the receiving end did call several times to let me know their whereabouts, and were nice guys. A lot of the boxes were badly crushed, which is expected, but a lot of the furniture was badly damaged as well... I expect this to happen to a degree, but I wish the various hands that move someone's property were a little more sensitive to handling with care. Complete and utter unprofessionalism on every level. PART ONE - Where to start? I am still waiting for my second load. It's a corporate paid move but I keep getting charged for extras out-of-pocket. My wife is really angry about our coordinator's incessant comments about being unprepared for the move even though we supplied more than half the boxes (they ran out - I have pictures) and we have pictures showing how things were separated so she is moving things so that they are physically separated by 50-60 feet or more. We kept getting threatened upon delivery that the crew was going to leave. I was "instructed" to take my phone off of speaker so my wife could not speak. After a month no furniture is assembled, TVs are still crated even though my cable service has started, and I still don't understand how beds can be delivered without the mattresses that were sitting on them (so I bought mattresses). Items that have been in my family for decades (ceramic and glassware) were put into boxes with no packing and as a result arrived shattered. They moved alcohol which is expressly forbidden and I shouldn't have to mark and I still haven't found half of it including a $1000+ bottle of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon, my father's remains are still missing which I am extremely upset about, my daughter's viola valued at over $5000 hasn't yet been found, I had Native American sculptures, blankets, pottery and kachina dolls (2 of which were broken and again high value collectibles aren't supposed to be moved) moved, frankly I am tired of her shifting the blame on me and my wife. They sent someone out to look at things before the move. They were in such a hurry to leave (I kept getting told they were going to walk out even though no one yelled at or spoke negatively to them) that 75% of the boxes are not only in the wrong rooms, they're on the wrong floors of the house. So I'm hiring movers to move things in my house Their crew supervisor looked at our things and said it "must have been packed up by $&@? Mexicans." I am Mexican-American and my mother is Mexican. No apologies for blatantly racist comments. PART TWO - It's been nearly a month since my first load arrived and we expected the second load to follow almost immediately. It was ready to go. I had to pay out-of-pocket for this, I still don't have beds and nothing in my house has been put together. Additionally, my home has been damaged after I asked the crew to be careful running up and down custom wood floors and stairs and I am facing repairs and more out-of-pockets costs on those. When the first crew showed up they didn't have enough boxes and I paid nearly $400 out-of-pocket for boxes for your crew. It seems that your advance person should have known what was needed and I asked if we could get boxes. Now, my wife had to sign to pay for extra boxes or work was not going to be completed. Am I supposed to also pay for storage when I'm not holding anything up for something I was forced to prepay? Please do not respond blaming anything on my wife's attitude or our poor planning. YOU are the professionals. YOU have been paid over and beyond what was expected. YOU are the company that left trash all over my yard at two houses. May I send you a bill for the cleanup? Can I get ANYTHING put together here so my home is livable? I've had to hire workers to relocate boxes ALL over my house. Again, don't blame my wife. I saw and heard her give explanations and your workers ignore our requests. Do I have to hire an attorney or call the police to get my property? I spent $1900 to pay for this load and I've spent more than $400 for boxes YOU did not provide, cleaning up both of my properties and hiring workers to move items in this house after YOUR racist supervisor (by the way I'm Mexican-American and I have yet to receive an apology from ANYONE at your company) told the crew just to "dump everything in the living room". I also have several hundred dollars in damaged goods. PART TWO - We expected the second part of our load to follow immediately. Nope. Didn't happen. First, this "national" trucking company could not find a driver for weeks. Then, they found a driver, but the truck broke down. And, even if it gets here, there's no one to unload it! What kind of moving company has NO drivers, NO trucks and NO crews? And promises to contact you daily with their "plan" then doesn't call? This one! read more

They hire contractors that show up to tell you they are packing you and moving you when they want despite any pre-planned arrangements with Nelson. Nothing but stress and headaches. The original estimator was a five star out of five stars professional. The driver 5 stars. But the rest... well, read on! Estimator. Five stars. We were promised gloves and masks due to COVID-19. Crew showed up for loading and for unloading with no masks and open finger gloves. When asked, we heard mumbling and gripes. Driver had them. So be prepared to be your own policeman. The estimator was DEAD ON regarding the number of boxes. Deduction for masks. Down to Four Stars. But wait! There is even more! The driver, AFTER THE FACT, asked us to sign off on the paperwork. He kept the log in sheet of boxes, so we had no way to verify while in process. He could not download the final paperwork! He had no printout!! We hooked him up a VPN network and a hotspot thru our personal phone so his tablet would work thru OUR data plan. Can you say, "UNPROFESSIONAL!" It happened again on the unload. Once again, he asked us to sign off AFTER the work was done WITH NO WAY TO READ IT! He even initialed for us on a page we did not sign because it would not load. We had no sheets to check the unload against. No way to verify what was done. Was it his fault? More on that later. Down to 3 stars. But wait! There is even more! The original estimator was shown the entrance to our gated subdivision, which is tight. We said that if the truck would not fit, we would use the company that moved us in three years prior. "No problem, he said" The day of the move, the driver wanted a shuttle! Said it would cost "about" $1200-$1600 extra. No way! We pointed out that the 42 homes all had moving trucks and the one that moved us in was way bigger! So he got it in. But had trouble leaving. The other truck had no issues! Down to two stars. But wait! There is more! The delivery was to take place at 2 pm on Friday. We left for the 18-hour trip the next day and get a call 24 hours ahead of unload. First, THEY had to unload on a Saturday because the law said we had to wait 24 hours to own the home before THEY could unload. It would cost us an extra $600. What?!? I, the writer the review, pointed out I went to law school, there is no such law. Oh, in essence "oops company policy, not law." I pointed out that I did not see the policy in writing. "Oops," in essence, " Ahh, oh, ahh..." A few hours later. We get a call. They would charge us $600 to unload us on Friday at 2 PM (the pre agreed upon time) since it was after 12 noon on a Friday and is considered OVERTIME. Ok, no problem, you can unload us at 11:00 AM. Huh? You can move up your closing? Sure we can? Did I mention I went to law school, ahem? Another return call. They will unload us at noon after all, no extra charge. No extra fees. AND they acted like THIS was a favor. Down two whole stars for this one. Ree-dic-U-lous. For those keeping count- about $2200 in extra charges that have been attempted so far. Rating -1 star But wait! There is more! We quizzed (read here, grilled) the driver who, in defense, said HE got a call from dispatch, and THEY told him WE had agreed to a Saturday unload (at an extra fee) so the moving company could get an extra load for the driver on that Thursday-Friday. What!?! So let us get this straight, They will charge US $600 for a late delivery so THEY can make extra money. Why not call us an offer us a $600 discount and we both make money? We would have grabbed that deal! Nope. Down to -2 stars (wow real negative territory here!). But wait! Yes, sadly dear reader, there is more! We still await over 40 days later, for the final weight (we get a discount, if lower). Down to ... oh, I guess that means -3 stars. Can we do -3? But wait, again, Virginia there is some good news. The driver was as nice as could be. Real sweetheart. All but one piece arrived safely and intact. They readily agreed to fix the one broken item. He was a super driver who ran his crews smoothly. Crews were very courteous once they got with the mask program. Was not his fault that they do supply him with a workable cell phone connect tablet, portable printer, and the training to use technology! He is the one that made the delivery possible by insisting his customer get what HE promised. I give him and his crews 5 stars. He saved the day! So back up to two stars (-3 + 5= 2) because the driver was that good! Phew! 2 stars This is our 10th move, first one with them. We have moved with Allied and North American all five stars. We will not be recommending Nelson Westberg to anyone. We were not going to write a review, but they kept bugging us and bugging us to do so (3 times!). So, lose a star for bugging and bugging us, even though we contacted you about our negative experiences. Knowing that, you still wanted a review? Well ok, we will review what we already told you. First nothing was happening, alot to do with the HR department at my work. Then I hear from different people none of which had a date when I'd get my things. Weeks ago I was told I have a moving company now, Nelson Westerberg Inc. I have yet to hear from them and no one answers the phone. I've been waiting for my stuff to get acknowledged at least. Instead all of my things have been sitting in a storage for months. I've literally sold a house and bought another one and closed on both and have yet to have any idea when I might get my things. Not sure where to start with this one. We were assigned Nelson Westerberg as our moving company this summer (2012) for fully paid relocation for my job. I mention it was fully paid for and hope that this review is not viewed as ungrateful. Certainly, the relocation saved us some money - but that's it. After working with Nelson Westerberg, I'm certain I would have better off spending my own money on a rental truck and making the cross county move myself. But let me start with good points. Kathy G., my corporate contact at Nelson Westerber was amazing at staying in touch and did her best see that this move went well. Unfortunately, there's only so much you can do at her level with astoundingly incompetent and rude subordinates. Also, the packing crew that showed up before the movers to pack the condo were great. They were friendly, respectful of our belongings, and very efficient. I think they had our condo (about 6K lbs) packed up in under 2 hours. However, as soon as the packers left, the entire move went down hill from there. The moving truck arrived with two complete a$$holes. The driver refused to speak to me or even acknowledge me. I greeted him at the breezeway in front of my front door and he walked right past me and into my living room. I greeted the second mover and asked how he was doing to which he replied, "I was fine until I got here." He too walked right past me and into me home. I asked if they needed a hand. Neither replied. My wife offered them drinks and snacks, neither replied. We were made to feel like idiots in our own home. I made the mistake of calling headquarters and complaining. The driver then got a call on his cell from his supervisor which he was obviously upset about. The two movers then offered what felt like 'forced' apologies for their attitude and continued about their work. The only other times they spoke to us was once to simply say, "you know we're gonna be here all night, right"? and then again at the end to get our signatures. My wife and I were pretty panicked to see all of our possessions drive off with these two guys. After we arrived in Detroit, we checked into our apartment the day our items were to arrive. An hour before the intended arrival time, we got a call from the driver that he was 'broken down in Montana'. Yes, he waited until an hour before the delivery time to tell us he was still 1500 miles away. It would be another week and a half before we'd see the truck. Fortunately, it was a different crew that delivered and they were very polite. However, when all was said an done we were missing furniture (family heirlooms) other possessions, and much of our belongings were damaged. Granted, we were reimbursed for these but that doesn't replace heirlooms. We're pretty sure this was retaliation for the initial phone call I made. Anyways, if you're looking for a good moving company and stress-less move, look elsewhere. Or, if your relocation agent pairs you up with Neslon Westerberg, demand they choose another company. read more

This company was absolutely amazing. I moved from Texas to California and everything went so smooth. Everything that was packed came to California the exact same way. I didn't have to wait a long time for them to deliver. They packed me on a Thursday and unpacked me on a Monday. The helpers were funny and very interactive all while packing and unpacking my things. Nelson Westerberg / Atlas Van Lines is a great company to use for your move...only if you DON'T care about professionalism. If you like poor communications, your personal contacts given indiscriminately to their sub-contractors (and their sub-sub contractors), getting calls from all sorts of middle men, not getting calls from the main contact people at NW/AVL, your goods delivered damaged (if they arrive at all), your goods arriving late, and having amateurs who can't stay on schedule dealing with you, then Nelson Westerberg / Atlas Van Lines is your dream company! If I had to sum it up in one word: unprofessional. During a recent move, several items were damaged by unprofessional sub-contractors used by NW. Also, my car arrived late and was damaged, and the driver tried to get away with it by trying to get my receiving signature before we examined the car. After contacting the Vice President and Gen Manager, who said that they would cover damages and cost of rental car, they later rescinded that promise to cover the rental car. Amazing! After doing several thousand dollars of business, the company tried to save $35 on a rental car instead of keeping a promise to a customer! BRILLIANT business acumen!!! The only professional people were the ones unloading us. They arrived on time and courteous. Everyone else must not posses a watch, since they all arrived 30 min to 2 hours late for each appointment. Needless to say, for the remainder of our move later in the year, I WILL NOT BE USING NELSON WESTERBERG / ATLAS VAN LINES. read more

Really awful. The load up was terrible with us doing a lot of work. When the unloaded it was obvious that the pads they wrapped our furniture in had gotten wet and caused damage and they did not admit to it or take responsibility. They also caused damage to the apartment and told me to submit a claim form then later denied causing any damage. I was rushed to sign forms on an iPad without being given the time to read everything and at that point I was too tired to push the matter. Do not use them. read more

The only reason for me not giving Atlas a 5 star rating is that I have never worked with another company to compare it to. I've now moved with this company twice - from LA to Chicago & Chicago to Cleveland. Both times the crew has been great (different crews) & more importantly, both times the household goods arrived without problem & in a timely manner. From LA to Chicago the driver came & delievered on Saturday, and this time the goods were picked up on Wednesday and delivered on Friday. Mike the driver was in contact whenever I called, he picked up the goods while my wife & I were at work & they had the truck unloaded it in under 2 hours (though we only had a 2bed/2bath apt). And to top it all off, the guys didn't have to unpack the goods, but helped for an hour or so. Unfortunately, I don't know the cost because it was a coporate move, but the service was excellent. read more

If you want your personal items destroyed and added charges for overweight limit and very unprofessional packers then call this company. They moved us from MO to CO and our items were packed with little regards to property and had to go to their storage unit first as our home purchase was not finalized. When we finally get our household goods delivered and started to unpack we found numerous items destroyed. Our antiques had been dumped into boxes and paper thrown on top to cover them up without regard to the damage done. Numerous expensive items were damaged, fridges, welders, ceramic items, glasses, toys, etc were broken also. We had canned goods put in boxes with bags of sugar or flour added on top and then sealed and destroyed. When we made claims for the damaged items we were told we would have to get an appraisal for the antiques they damaged but they would not pay for the appraisal as that is our problem. Of course, their appraisal they gave us to call charges us almost as much for the appraisal as they value she gives us for the damaged items. Then we are told that they will not reimburse us for our $2000 fridge as there is no outside damage and compressor fail, even though I had to unload my working fridge for them to load it and we get it back not working, so sorry your problem not ours. During the packing I had to repeatedly ask that my autograph guitar and pendulum wall clock be put in boxes to help keep them from being damaged as all the packers did was wrap them in two layers of paper and left them sitting on the floor. Avoid the Chicago office of this moving company at all costs. They hide behind "regulations." Very pricey with results that do not justify the costs. Because they are large, they don't care about one or two lousy reviews. read more

Filled out the form, full Inventory, got a quote. The quote was good, so i called to confirm my move! Only to be told the quote was a ballpark and the actual move would cost $3000 more!!! WTF how is there a $3000 discrepancy when a full inventory is provided... Needless to say, I found someplace much cheaper. read more
