I've been moving around the bay for a bit now - A lot of apartments have 'amenities', but nothing can hold a candle to NEMA. No gimmicks either, all well thought out and will definitely make life easier for you. Everyone... from the concierge, to the mail room to the valet is super nice. This review is specifically for Abby Bergman in the leasing office. I cannot say enough about how enjoyable and smooth she made my move. I had left San Francisco for a few months and was looking for a new building (mostly the newer luxury buildings in SOMA) and had narrowed my list down to 4-5. Abby happened to be my first appointment -- and I'll just say I did not have another appointment. She literally talked to me about the building and my options for nearly TWO HOURS. She was so extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and thorough -- and did not at all get frustrated with my 100 questions. She let me know what units were available in the timeframe that I wanted to move in (I had a specific date) and walked me through video tours and the floor plans of each of the 3 options that were available. She went to great length to discuss the pros/cons of each to help me make my decision. I had a friend go and check them out for me to help me make my decision (we all 3 had decided on the same one). This was about a month out before my move, so there was a lot of back and forth and MANY questions from me -- she was always responsive and (most importantly) up front about the answers. I very much appreciated that. She made sure that everything was all set for me on move-in day and exactly what to expect. If you're considering NEMA for your next home, I highly recommend that you ask to work with Abby, as she is absolutely fantastic to work with. 5 stars for the leasing process alone!! read more

Where to begin... NEMA is the right and best choice with an incredible amount of reasons why. #1 Abby - she was our leasing agent through out the whole process. She would answer all and any questions in the most timely manner. She continued to be helpful after we had moved in and offered to give us another tour to clarify some new resident questions we had. Abby is a ROCKSTAR and will make your move and decision a breeze. She is trustworthy, timely, and always helpful and informative. After moving in we were accommodated by the extremely kind concierge and other members of the NEMA staff- shoutout to Evan who went out of his way to help us out on move in day. You will never experience an easier move in : private elevator access leading to the loading garage, moving carts, and the most amazing helpful garage staff that offered to help properly park our U-Haul into the loading dock! So far we have enjoyed the many perks of NEMA- given covid life and all! Packages are always safe and even delivered to you. You can text concierge at any time with any question. An app for renters provides easy access to amenities in the building, including maintenance requests. Do not worry about the area, you are walkable to Hayes and walkable to a market (not overpriced) next door with amazing restaurant and to go options. This review is about the maintenance team. I recently moved into NEMA and experienced some issues with the thermostat. I submitted the maintenance work order on the app which was very easy. The crew responded in a timely manner. Marco and Salvador came to my unit to help me with the issue. They were polite and friendly. They quickly dealt with the problem and fixed it. Valet service is best in class, special shout out to Marvin, Gilbert, Rae (& the whole team), whom go above and beyond everyday.  As if app requests for cars weren't convenient enough, the guys know my schedule and I never wait due to this highly efficient crew. Cars are well protected and treated carefully; garage is highly secured, so if you own a lux vehicle this is the place to live. The doormen are also best in class, as well as  great people, whom are lovely to come home to (Tino, Merry, Taha, Don, Anthony) are key to making the community feel safe and like a home. There are no issues with packages in the building, which is a huge consideration when choosing an apt in SF. Community events and fitness classes are a ton of fun, frequent and a great way to connect with neighbors. I enjoyed the wine tasting trips, trip to Tahoe and all the innovative, cool events the team regularly hosts (goat yoga!!!). In home massage, onsite salon and a great business are great for when life gets super busy. As for my apartment, I love the concrete floors and the shower is great for tall people. The finishes are sleek but lack lighting was overlooked (no overhead or closet lighting included). Overall an awesome experience; I love living here! read more

Moved in towards the beginning of February and I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed living here. The building is super dog friendly and close to a dog park as well. They have movie nights and community events to meet other people in the buildings and it's overall a great way get to know everyone. The amenities are fantastic! Never had an issue living her. Nema -- the best. I've lived here for almost 3 years and I can't say enough incredible things about it. It truly is a community. What I mean by this is I've met some of my closest friends here. The staff: the staff is what makes this place go. Let's just say I have nicknames for everyone of them from Donny Boy (Don) to E-Dog (Eric). They have made me enjoy coming home. Nema is the pinnacle of living in San Francisco. It's clean, the amenities are best in class, and the location is superb. You're nestled between uber and Twitter. Below twitter is the best market in the city: the market on market. Great food, wine, vibes etc. it's city living and I love it. When I reflect on my time living at nema, I can't help to think back at the amazingness that I experienced. Nema has been a huge part of my life. Huge shout out to the staff. Same Pros and Cons as my previous review. It's just a shame that prices have increased 130% since my time there. I understand that it is a top of the line, luxury apartment, but it's also not in the best area. For those of you unfamiliar with SF, the location is 1 block east of some of the worst streets in the downtown area and about 4 blocks south of the Tenderloins. I do wish the dog run was accessible from the inside, I did find a back hallway that I could exit right there, but I still had to walk on the street to return to the building. It just wasn't safe a night for my wife to talk the dogs out. I remember when a dismembered body stuffed in a suitcase was found a block away. read more

Starting to feel like they nickel and dime you for everything. We had a maid service come in that was recommended through NEMA that I'm guessing mistakenly took our key. Reached out to the maid service to see if they had it, they didn't. Not a big issue. Went to the leasing office and told them about my situation. Not sure who I spoke to but wtf - for lost keys it's $50 (me - haha you're kidding me right ?). "Nope, they're lost keys and we have to replace them". Sighs, rfid cards, seriously?! Definitely wasn't happy paying $50 for them to issue me keys. I told them I used their maid service and her response was, "We just recommend them - your choice to use them". If you're going to recommend services, make sure you hold yourself responsible for their actions. Do your due diligence and hold yourself accountable. Her response makes me wonder why I even live here. Luckily, my leasing agent who handled my original application brought the charge down to $25 because I still had a key. The shower of my apartment only comes out straight hot water and they came fix it for two times but the problem is still unsolved. However, the apartment is offering me a guest suite for me to take the shower and they called the maintenance to come and fix it. This post is solely about the NEMA Garage: The nema garage and its staff are freaking amazing. I love Neil, Marvin, and Ray, they always welcome me back with smiles and a car ready to go. Even on its most busiest days they always make the time to saw hello and make sure I am ok. They def go way above and beyond what is expected of valet people. One day I came in with a busted tire and I was frantically worry as I had to go back out for another meeting within 2 hours. Ray went beyond the call of duty and told me to relax and he would take care it. I came back from my apartment 45 mins later and Ray not only changed the tires to my car but showed me where I need to get it fixed and the price I should expect. Overall, your car is in super safe hands especially when you have such amazing valet staff to take care of you and your car. read more

Great building, terrible management. I've lived here going on 2 years now and I've been absolutely horrified by the management in the building. I've lived in many luxury buildings throughout my life but this one is the absolute worst. They claim to provide services but frankly I have not experienced anything that would be considered special (other than the valet) especially for the price one pays to live here. You pay for a service not for the actual space. I could move into an apartment double, if not triple, the size for the same price. There have been several incidents in which the management was not only unable to handle in a professional and timely manner but were also unapologetic and continued as nothing had happened. Not even a sorry. Why should I have to feel uncomfortable walking around my own home? I have to leave through the garage because often times I don't want to walk through the lobby because of a certain person in the lobby. Some people like Don, Tino, Erik and Kinley are great but others are just awful and often times they're temps. The standards of this building have just been constantly lowering since I've moved in and I'm not sure if they just become comfortable and stop caring but things seriously need to change. There is also no outlet to complain and I've talked to several of my friends who also live or lived in this building who have the same complaints. The complaints I have made have been disregarded and hopefully by writing this something will be done because clearly NEMA management won't do anything about this so hopefully someone from Crescent Heights will. read more

We lived in NEMA for 2 years. First of all I want to say, that this is the best building we lived in the US. Stellar amenities, great location, quiet unit, outstanding gym (variety of professional equipment), breathtaking roof top, great aroma in the common areas, Service has generally been fast and to the point, we also never had issues with packages. I want to specifically mention amazing professionals who continually provided outstanding service from our perspective: Kinley, Eric, Don, Nina, Kim. We did have an issue for the first few months with some neighbors smoking which impacted our experience. But management was able to solve this problem after a few months, we were very grateful, and ended up staying for 1 more year at the time. This review would have been 5 full stars (maybe even with complains about not being able to give 6), but upon the move out, there was seemingly a mistake with having  $160 extra fee deducted from our deposit for some cleaning. We had cleaners over to prepare the apartment for move out on the date we returned the keys. Our cleaners have specifically cleaned back side of the stove, behind the fridge, and de-dusted behind the washing machine - which were still named to be the reasons of additional cleaning fee appeared on the move out statement. This issue was not resolved - unfortunately, we did not receive a response for our follow-up email about our request. Hence - 4 starts. Other than that, this was a great place to live. read more

Serious problems with security - I've been broken into by people impersonating cleaners, and numerous incidents with strangers sneaking past security and knocking on doors. SF police won't do anything even with crystal clear video footage and positive identification of the individuals. Otherwise, great building - but can't recommend until the security issues are addressed. UPDATE: once again, Don is amazing and he's trying to make changes... but it's been months and nothing - random people walk past the front desk and into the building. read more

Effectively, NEMA has turned out to be a highly elaborate bait and switch deal; they promised the world and ended up delivering a shiny pile of flashy falsehoods. I'll preface this by saying my issues are with management; the building staff has always been exceedingly nice. I recently got my renewal offer package, which raised rent by over 10% and parking by a whopping 40%, an offer that exploded 60 days before my lease was up (have you ever heard of the rental market in San Francisco allowing you to find a place two months out?). When I complained, they promised to do something about it -- and came back with an IDENTICAL renewal price but offered to kick me $400 and an accent wall. Wow, such a bargain. Strangely coinciding with all of this has been the newly developed leak that goes all the way down my side of the building (affecting a multitude of units), a leak INSIDE of the walls, every time it rains. With barely any warning and intermittent notification and responsiveness, my apartment was rendered uninhabitable (85F and louder than a rock quarry due to giant blowers installed in my bedroom) for a period of almost 8 days. They did not offer alternative lodging or other restitution, but maintenance did seem very apologetic and they cleaned my place after. Following the work, management has gone completely unresponsive on mine and other peoples' requests to simply make us whole for the damages to our property (broken mirrors, plants, lamps) and the inability to use our apartments that we incurred as a result of the work. We are legally entitled to quiet enjoyment of our units and that has not been the case. I was simply disappointed that a place billing itself as a community would egregiously profit-seek and force its already high-paying tenants out in favor of newer, higher-paying ones; now, I'm actually outraged that a luxury property manager would act like a slum lord. The front desk staff and maintenance guys are still really nice, but none of that makes up for the blatant mismanagement at the top. Do yourself a favor and stay away. read more

My experience has been a Nightmare from Day 1 ! There is Construction on the building and next door ! The apartment smells bad from the clog up sinks & garbage disposal. The Concierge is SO rude. The Community Staff sends continuous emails, text, and in room phone calls everyday. The Laundry room has been broken for last 3 weeks & my in room machine is also not working. The 3rd floor has free coffee when its not broken. I know this is "medical California" but the hallways always smell like weed. And the Synergy staff has enter my room unannounced while Im in bed sleeping which is very scary for a Girl traveling alone. I came to SF to work because of Nema I have not been able to be concentrate. Im always worried about everything going on in this building :( $5,000 paid in full up front for 30 days :( read more

NEMA Requested my first review be taken down on the count of "lacks a firsthand customer experience": "Came to lease an apartment at 12:30. Both leasing agents were out to lunch... uhh.. do you want to rent a fucking apartment or not?" ... you want a detailed account of my customer experience? Fine. Here you go :) I arrived at NEMA on Friday October 3rd at 12:30. Why did I arrive at 12:30? Because I have a 9-5 job that allows me an hour lunch mid-day. I imagine that most people who have a job that can afford this place generally have lunch between 12 and 1... but that's beside the point. I walked up to some sort of receptionist in the leasing office. Detailed account of conversation with said receptionist as follows: Me: Hi, I'm hoping you have 30 minutes to give me a quick tour of the building. Receptionist: Unfortunately our tours are 1 hour. *exchanged strange glance* Me: I only have a half hour, my boyfriend has already seen the property and I just want to take a look. (she should have read my words as.. we are ready to lease an apartment but I just want to walk around and make sure I like it first....I don't care about your 1 hour sales pitch) Receptionist: All of my agents are out to lunch. Would you like to schedule an appointment, we're closed tomorrow, (Saturday??? Whatever) would you like to make an appointment on sunday? Me: No, I'm out of town. *silence from other end* What type of leasing establishment does not operate during the most high-traffic times for looking at apartments... lunch on friday, and all day saturday? I wonder if : 1. You can rent an apartment without giving any commission to the lack-thereof leasing agents 2. You have to deal with these slackers once you live here? Anyone know? **Update - now been at NEMA 6 months. -It's a saturday at 7am and construction is in full force. If you're in the south tower and have a nice view, sleeping is IMPOSSIBLE (even with ear plugs). I am woken up daily to it and it's my biggest complaint thus far. -The south building is also awoken by garbage trucks at 2am every sunday and weds, too. -Heat in the apartment is still an issue on clear, sunny days. Summer is going to be a nightmare again. No fix yet. -Using your dryer in your apt heats the place up like crazy. -2x I have had food delivered that was specifically told to go in the refrigerator and concierge just left it sitting at their desk. -Gym is STILL not open as promised. -Have learned they breed discriminate against dogs (and I wasn't sent the list until after I signed my lease, which pretty much invalidates their list if I wanted to get legal about it). They also require a monthly fee to have a pet for "maintenance", yet the dog run is still not open and the pet spaw still costs $10+? read more

Living at the NEMA had it's ups and downs. I can't exactly complain about the comfort of having a valet service pull my car out with a text, or having a fantastic team of concierge and porter office employees saying hello to you by your name when you walk by. Or how the NEMA's maintenance would fix things quickly. All of which are expected with the premium price I would be paying for. What I can complain about forcing me to listen to the same Spotify playlist for a year and a half like some Guantanamo Bay torture practice. My apartment was on a terrace level and the NEMA installed speakers 5 feet from my bed playing club music from 6am to 10pm. Sometimes forgetting to turn it off at night. Any complaints I made would lead to temporary relief, or an equally terrible Mariah Carey holiday playlist. I can complain about how my apartment had zero privacy. Hundreds of people daily would walk by my private terrace and peer into my living room and bedroom daily. When I brought it to the management, they said that the plants were sufficient to block people looking in. All the while, the leasing office would walk their tours through and point into my living room using me and my furnishings as the relaxed, working at home example to live up to. I can complain about the NEMA's bait and switch practice of promising things during my tour of the building like car washing or gym access, or a dog run. Few of which came into existence 7 months after I moved in - regardless of the fact that I was paying for them in my rent months before. I can complain about the NEMA doing nothing about people flicking cigarettes into my patio or the burn holes in my outdoor furniture. Or tossing beer cans over into my space like it's a trash bin. I can complain about how there is no air conditioning. I can complain about how my patio was in the buildings outdoor space but the building refused to hose it down. I can complain about the NEMA calling itself the most high tech building but having the poorest built building portal known to the internet. More than half its tenants are coders and web designers and you can barely make the web payments work correctly. I can complain about the times when the NEMA would enter my unit without prior notice to do "routine work" even though I was home, sick, in bed and ignoring the knocks to the front door. I can complain about how the fire alarm would go off if I even thought about using the oven. I can complain about the zero effort the manager Jason put forward to respond to my unhappy emails, or how the management is only available when they want something from you, but when you need them they are in "Meetings." or will get back to you weeks later. I can complain about how the NEMA sent me a message through their internal site stating, "We looked at what we're charging for new rents and what the rent trends are in the market. We came up with the following renewal offer by lease terms." ..."If we do not hear from you by the above date, your rental rate will be automatically renewed at the month-to-month rate." Quietly trying to increased my rent by 24% during my stay in the building - pushing my small one bedroom cost of $3581 to $4450.80 I can complain how even after I told the building manager Jason I was not interested in that lease deal - because my original lease stated, ""...Following such termination date, this Lease will continue on a month-to-month basis." - He still illegally signed me up for a new month-to-month lease tacking on an additional 10%. on top of a 14% increase for the market increase. I can complain how the NEMA bullied me with eviction into paying the additional "month-to-month" fees. I can complain about how I took immaculate care of my brand new apartment but was charged more than $1000 to replace a carpet that was less than 2 years old, and completely clean. I can complain about how I am still waiting for the prorated amount for my move out month. But my biggest complaint of all about how the NEMA is a building with all the potential to set a positive standard for San Francisco but becomes an inflated version of everything wrong with the housing market happening around it. If you want to pay lots of money, too much money, and live in a beautiful built, shiny black piece of crap that has a fantastic car valet, a pool, and free coffee. I would highly recommend moving in. Got my renewal package a few months ago, and now that I've decided I'm not going to stay, I've decided to write a review. I didn't want the negative review to affect any chance I had of negotiating a better offer. As someone else has mentioned recently, it's a very elaborate bait and switch deal. Last July I was moving to San Francisco from the East Coast and was looking for a place to live. NEMA looked awesome from the renderings, but it wasn't opening until October. The leasing agent suggested that I could do an AirBnb until the building opened. I ended up extending my corporate housing an additional two months just so I could move into the building, which turned out to be rather expensive. After moving in, the only amenities that were ready were the pool and the rooftop terrace. It would be almost six months before the gym came online. Not to mention that NEMA is constantly surrounded by construction, more than a year later. The art installation on the street in front of the North Tower has literally been under construction for since the Spring of this year. We're talking 6 months to install planters, 2 monoliths, and stone. So after living here for 12 months, they send me a renewal that increased my rent $532 a month. Rent was already expensive, and I wasn't naïve--I did think that rent would go up. But that's a car payment's worth. I'm just totally fed up. Literally everyone that I know who moved in here around the same time I have has or is moving out. Let this be a fair warning to potential renters! The building is great and the staff is beyond amazing. In fact, I do have to applaud everyone on the staff. The fitness classes are awesome, and the gym is fantastic. The concierge and the resident coordinator staff know me by name, they know my unit number, they seem like they generally care. Even the few times I've needed maintenance, the maintenance staff was fast and a pleasure to deal with. That being said, potential renters beware. Prices will continue to go up, and it's unfortunately that NEMA works so hard to build a "community," yet they squeeze every last dollar out of you until your squeezed out. One major rant I have about this building is the sponsorship. Every single resident event that they have is sponsored in some way. They ask someone like ZipCar, Scoot, or another company to serve wine and cheese so you can be marketed to. They don't spend a dime on actual resident events, so don't let them fool you that they actually care about fostering a community. read more

NEMA is an absolutely beautiful place to live, and apartments are gorgeous. The amenities are for the most part nice (with the exception of the dog park, which is one of the most miserable excuses of an animal park that you'll find in San Francisco, which is ironic since the building proclaims to be animal friendly). Unfortunately the positives things about the building end there. The property manager Jason, has not only been incredibly unfriendly towards me the entire time of living at NEMA, but has attempted to leverage his position as property manager to fine me multiple times for things that did not even occur, to taking away my parking sticker and parking spot AFTER I had paid for a full month of parking (I'm thankful for the parking garage manager Samet who went above and beyond to try and compensate for Jason's childish and completely unprofessional behavior). NEMA is corrupt from the too down, and the sooner Crescent Heights gets rid of Jason the better. read more

I recently visited a friend who lives in Nema and I must say, the place certainly left an impression on me... The Good: It's a beautiful building in a great location with impressive amenities and a really nice kitchen in the unit. The evening "concierge" was polite and helpful. (I use quotations because this seems like a liberally used term for a doorman, rather than a professional of Les Clefs d'Or caliber). Overall, it's what one would expect given the hefty rents. The Not-So-Good: I can't really fault the place for being what it is, but I found the level of security to be more Orwellian than comforting. Coded, individualized RFID cards that track your comings and goings meticulously... To the point that a log is generated which shows which floors you're going to on the elevators and when. My friend who is a tenant loves the place... He equates it to living in a hotel... Perhaps that's what I found so disquieting about the place... Also, as an aside, I was really underwhelmed by the bathroom in his unit... The kitchen was beautifully appointed but the bathroom fixtures seemed very basic to me. If Nema is your kinda place, then more power to you, I can see why it would appeal to some people. My take is that I want to feel secure at home, of course, but I don't want to pay top dollar for the privilege of Big Brother. read more

I have been here for a few months, and it has become absolutely UNLIVABLE. The poor construction of the building has made the apartments boiling hot, and the only other option is to open our windows to a filthy construction project, making the situation even more unlivable. The amount of dust, pollution, noise, etc. is disgusting. As a result, I suffered from laryngitis for weeks and many of the people on this side of the building have had a number of health issues, as well. NEMA has ignored everyone's uniform complaints and they are simply violating the lease agreement by taking thousands of dollars for unlivable apartments. When I asked to move to the other tower, they brought me to the only "available studio" - which was smaller, on a lower floor, and had no view - for a significantly higher rent. It wasn't even comparable to my current apartment. Quite frankly, the management here is terrible at their job, seeing that they don't listen to anyone's complaints, and they should just change the entire management team. I have spoken to Jason a number of times and he still has yet to rectify the situation. NEMA may seem like a better situation to other places in San Francisco, but really they just have a veil over all of their problems. The residents are constantly complaining amongst each other, with no one's issues being taken seriously. I could never recommend such an unlivable (and overpriced) living situation to anyone. *Please note that this review/ rating is in response to the apartment and most of the management team in the leasing office - NOT the concierge, valet, and other staff. My husband and I (early 30s) lived at NEMA for a year - here are the pros and cons of our experience: PROS - Staff: They are beyond wonderful. They've taken a few lessons from the very best in the business, based on their practices. From package service to problem resolution - they are top notch. - Gym: Fantastic equipment (treadmills are $10k+ models and are extremely high end). Group classes are legit and the instructors are great. - Amenities: the 24th and 3rd Floor terraces were fantastic. - Clientele: I have to say this was a con when we first moved in - at times it felt like a frat house. But rest assured, NEMA consistently raises their prices, so one by one the peasants were replaced by Bentley driving 30 somethings. - Resident events: They do a great job of hosting events every once in a while for residents: Super Bowl watch parties, Happy Hours on the 3rd floor terrace, Day hikes, etc. CONS - No AC: While you won't need it most times, it can get pretty uncomfortable in the warm months, especially on the higher floors. We were on 7 and there were definitely some sleepless nights. - Subpar internal lighting: The light fixtures are quite useless. We had to replace every single one just to be able to see when the sun wasn't shining into our unit. - Not soundproofed from above: The units must share the floor and ceiling (which is concrete) because you could hear shoes, items being dropped, etc. very easily. - You have no choice but to valet your car: While this might be a luxury to some, it was a hassle for us. Our Audi experienced numerous bumps and bruises while in their hands - which, to their credit, they promptly fixed. - The damn window clings on Market. It's as if they're calling all the pretentious douchebags to come live there. Yes, it's in gritty SOMA but that's the beauty of it. You will see some weird shit living here. Even actual human shit on the sidewalks. But fear not, it's power washed daily. You're a quick walk from some really great restaurants and bars (Cadence, Alta CA, Zuni Cafe, Moya, Mr. Tipple's, Absinthe, to name a few). Living at NEMA was a great decision all around, but it is high-rise living... it's not the quintessential SF bay window apartment feel that some may want. But if you're looking for ease, centrality, and a little hoity toityness, NEMA is for you. read more

While we did end up going with a different place, purely due to cost, our experience virtually touring the place with Abby was amazing. She was so beyond sweet and took the time to go through every amenity and any and every question we had. We couldn't find exactly what we were looking for, but she took the time to show us multiple different units to really try and find us the perfect place. If you're looking to rent here, I would highly, highly recommend asking for her (though I'm sure everyone there is awesome). Thank you again for all your help Abby! read more
