I must admit I think Neon Moon might have garnered a five star review if I hadn't just spend 20 minutes remembering the gelato and espresso places I had experienced in Barcelona. So unfair. And yet, even with Barcelona in mind, this place rated four stars. Maybe I should say, this is the best gelato and espresso I've had in Michigan and Illinois. Now I would like to rant a bit, so maybe most of you don't need to finish reading my review. The espresso machine should be spotless, not matter how busy, and they weren't that busy. I love the glass they dripped the brewed espresso into, but this means they weren't dripping directly into a demitasse so they couldn't mark it artistically. In fact, the front of the machine was littered with used stacked shot glasses and larger receivers, filters, and while I did see her use all fresh clean parts, the used clutter in front should not have been visible. Worse, even though I was having my espresso there, it came in a disposable paper cup. I suspect the clutter took a while to accumulate because my order of a straight double shot of only espresso confused her, I'm guessing almost all the coffee orders are for lattes. The espresso was good, fresh ground, but I'm like the character played by Sly Stallone in "Tulsa King." I need the ceramic espresso cup and saucer. I found the gelato to be delicious, and they serve it with plastic color changing spoons sort of like mood rings (if you're younger than dirt, ask a grandparent). read more

Max at neon moon was fantastic. best vegan chocolate gelato I've ever had! Mint chip was amazing. The whole place was adorable and had a cool vibe. We went every day of our vacation, and Max was very hospitable and made neon moon a fun place to return to. The atmosphere was amazing! read more

We were super excited to try this place and drove a decent way to come try it. The outside looked very cute and seems like great place to hangout. Their website lists a pretty robust amount of vegan options and it's listed on other sites like happy cow as being vegan friendly. When we walked in, no one greeted us and when we got up to the counter to take a look at the options, we were immediately asked what we wanted to order even though we've only been in there for like maybe 30 seconds to a minute. We let the staff know that we would just need a second because we haven't been there before. The girl looked annoyed that we wanted to look around. There was no one else trying to order, so I'm not sure what the issue was. After looking through the options, it didn't seem like they had any vegan flavors. There were some things labeled dairy free, but those things are not necessarily the same, especially if you have allergies or sensitivities. I asked the team member if they could let me know which ones were vegan because I'm not seeing any labels and she snapped back and told us there are labels out that indicate which ones are vegan. I apologized for my oversight and went back to look for those labels and after looking again, there was nothing labeled vegan only dairy free. I asked her again sorry to bother but nothing seems to have those labels that you mentioned only dairy free to which she looked us blankly in the eyes and just said "yeah". I wasn't sure if that meant that they were out of the vegan flavors or she wasn't sure which ones were actually vegan but the lack of response and just the lack of communication skills were just confusing honestly but again, this is like definitely a high school aged kid so I wouldn't expect amazing customer service when the place is being staffed by high school aged girls . I wasn't really sure how to respond to that and honestly like we just wanted to leave, but my partner had already gotten their ice cream handed to them and we'd driven all the way out here so I just tried to ask one more time and I pulled up their website and I said hi sorry to bother you again but like it says you guys have all these flavors so are you just out of stock of them or do you not actually carry these you -just like let me know so I can understand and like maybe plan accordingly next time. The girl just looked at me blankly again, like I was speaking a different language and then eventually another team member seemed to like over hear and then chimed in that they probably were just really busy earlier in the day and sold out of those flavors. That's a totally fine explanation and totally reasonable. It's a busy beach spot and that explanation totally sufficed. I just don't know why the other girl acted like I was pulling teeth to ask a basic question that she should be able to know the answer too. Overall, we ended up just leaving quickly. We plan to sit outside and eat the ice cream but after that like super weird and offputting interaction with the staff, we just decided to leave. This place has great reviews and we were so excited and came all the way over here to try it and it's disappointing we didn't get to have that same experience. Out of all the shops and restaurants we visited that day in this area this place was pretty much the only negative experience. I know a lot of people don't think it's a big deal, but it's important to have staff know the allergens in their items because that can be like a life or death situation for someone with an allergy or could make someone with a dietary restriction sick if told the wrong info and there's no reason that a customer should be treated rudely when asking a question that is basic food service knowledge to answer. read more

What a pleasant surprise! I knew they had great gelato, but now they offer gourmet coffee and breakfast options. The egg soufflés were delicious, fresh ingredients and very well made. We tried the mushroom, spinach and feta version. Looking forward to trying the other 2 types. Our cappuccino and iced mocha were perfectly made as well. The mocha was very well balanced, not too sweet. The pleasant outdoor atmosphere was lovely as well. Love this new breakfast addition to the area! read more

We really enjoyed our stop here. We wanted something a little different than the standard ice cream shop. The flavors were so good and such variety! The salted cookies and cream was so yummy. Match and strawberry were a great combo, as was fruity pebbles and blue moon. Yum! Lots of options, including some dairy free sorbettos. The service was friendly and quick and the outdoor seating area was so cute. They offer a flight of flavors - four half scoops of you just can't decide. read more

Neon Moon has moved into the space formerly occupied by Izzy's Bean & Gelato Shoppe. They have a nice assortment of flavors and we all enjoyed our selections. The salted caramel was the standout among the flavors we tried. There was outdoor seating available, but we notice any indoor seating while we were there on a rainy evening. A little slice of heaven in this sleepy beach town. Employee was beyond patient with a group of teenage boys who got there right before us. Lots of variety of gelato including vegan, dairy free, nut free, and gluten free. Maybe my favorite part was the spoon that changed color when it was cold.
