Their biscuits are the best. They only had one plain one left. So I got a strawberry biscuit also. I wasnt to crazy about getting the strawberry biscuit. But when I tried it I quickly changed my mind. I'm back in Chicago now wishing I had one right now. The plain biscuit itself is buttery and has a solid texture. Perfect crunch on the outside and great inside. All buttery but just the right amount. Then take this biscuit and add fresh strawberry pieces. The tart sweet of the strawberry makes this one damn good biscuit. It's unique. Then I had the glazed old fashioned donut. It tasted like a great buttery pound cake. I guess you could say its pricey but not really for the quality and the unique tastes and flavor. Coffee is very good also. We were tasting the three items in the car. Great little roadside stop for breakfast or lunch. My wife and I both went with the Salmon Bagel, with different cream cheese varieties. We enjoyed our breakfast at Whistle Stop Grocery! Their grocery assortment is unique and great brands of better quality foods. We got breakfast sandwiches and they were so good! I got a side of garlic aioli and it was fresh and amazing. My marshmallow latte was perfect. We went during Labor Day weekend and the wait was 30 minutes. Want the best sandwich in southwest Michigan? Whistle Stop is where it's at!! Easy ordering at the iPad kiosk. Built my own sandwich, it was heavy on the garlic aioli, but the balsamic onions were mind blowing. Love they had gluten free bread, would have preferred a lettuce wrap, but a satisfying, stacked sandwich, that kept me full until dinner. The matcha lemonade tasted like it was missing some sweetness, so maybe order with strawberry? Much better than Milda's, though I am sad Whistle Stop is phasing our the superior Great Lakes Potato chips for Kettle brand. Wish they had a bit more to choose from for sides. This place is the best pit stop or lunch spot! Their new veggie was absolutely delicious. They are friendly even when busy. We've been here several times and usually sit outside, but this year we visited in December and took it to go. Ordering online is super easy and allows substitutions, which is also amazing. There is no restroom, which is the only drawback. 5 stars!!! read more

The ordering process is confusing and they're super sloooooow to fulfill orders. We ordered online ahead of time and while the ordering system indicate our food would be ready in 35 mins, it took just under one hour. While waiting customers were confused, clustered, and staff didn't do much of anything to help. I assisted more customers than the staff did, as customers walking in asked "do I need to order sandwiches online?" or "where do I order coffee." Very convenient and pretty good selection for a small store near rental homes in Union Pier, MI. We were hoping to pick up some local wines here, but staff explained they don't sell them because there are so many wineries nearby. Pretty pricey for liquor here but some unique finds, like rich and decadent dark chocolate covered orange slices, homemade hummus and rosemary ciabatta bread. Good selection of cheeses, cured meats and unique items (like honey comb) for a delicious charcuterie board. The baked goods here looks really fresh and tasty too. read more

I've been a customer for several years. Generally very good fresh foods. However, I had a very odd experience here today. I bought some of their "fresh" chicken salad which I've purchased a number of times and been very satisfied with. Not this time! The chicken salad was well within the expiration date but smelled bad and tasted worse. The manager told me that sales are final on their "fresh" products and just because i "didn't like It" didn't mean it was bad. She refused a refund. I made a large order, 7 sandwiches at 1pm on a Thursday. It took over an hour for them to be ready. They were also out of avocado, but instead of refunding the $3 (for 2 sandwiches) they said they'd throw in free chips. When I returned home, the bag was missing a sandwich ($11.50) and no extra bags of chips ... I wasn't amused. Sandwiches were fine, nothing mind blowing. I called your phone number almost everyday last week - and 3 times yesterday and left a voicemail because I had questions about how many people each of your thanksgiving dishes served. No one called back, despite the outgoing message saying you will return the call. Today I drove 30 min round trip to talk to get my questions answered in person and was told I missed the cut off.  Nowhere on your site did it say what the cut off for ordering was or how many people each dish served. I assumed since I called many times and left a voicemail BEFORE the cutoff (which again was not made clear on the website) that someone would have gotten back to answer my questions. When I drove to finally get these questions answered (which is ridiculous that I had to do this in and of itself) I was rudely dismissed and told no exceptions.  As someone who lives in the area full-time with even more family in Lakeside who are regulars, I expected better.  I am extremely disappointed in what just happened will no longer be patronizing Whistle Stop. read more

Stopped in for breakfast three days in a row while vacationing in the area off-season (January). It's a great little store with a nice selection of fresh sandwiches, dips, bakery items, coffees, snacks, and gourmet-style packaged food items. Reminded us a bit of a "micro" Whole Foods store. Modern, well lit and clean. You order and purchase the freshly made sandwiches at a tablet/kiosk and purchase everything else at the front counter. It's two different transactions which was a little odd at first, but the staff were very friendly and explained the process to us as soon as we walked in the door. The sandwich ordering process was easy and straightforward. We recommend ordering your sandwich first thing and while you're waiting (took 5-10 minutes for us), browse the shelves and order your coffee. We ordered breakfast sandwiches every day, varying them slightly each time. We recommend getting an aioli on the side. To do so, just chat to the cook through the small window as ordering them on the side didn't seem to be an option on the kiosk. The sandwiches were absolutely fantastic. The breads were perfectly toasted, the egg portions were generous and the roasted red pepper topping were delightful. We tried the herb aioli and the honey butter aioli and they were just wonderfully seasoned and a great compliment to the breakfast sandwich. The cold brew coffee was deliciously smooth and the staff accommodated my own custom drink order (iced cold brew w/vanilla syrup and a splash of cream). We did take pictures of our sandwiches, but the pictures didn't seem to do justice to how delicious they were so I didn't include them in this review. Trust us, the breakfast sandwiches are tasty! They also have a decent selection of newspapers for purchase and we picked up a Chicago Tribune as well. read more

Recently people have been commenting that this place is too expensive and doesn't have good service. I highly disagree with these statements. We used to stop here every year on our vacations. For the past 2 years, we've stopped, they have been closed just post Labor Day. Ok, not a problem, I get that they need a vacation, however, their website, which says it was updated just a week ago, doesn't say anything about their taking time off. It still says open 7 days a week. This is the only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars. It's disappointing to keep stopping only to find the business to be closed. We wanted a quick breakfast before going on a wine bus tour. We didn't want anything heavy, but saw that this place would fit the bill perfectly. We arrived fairly early and it was busy. There are a few counters but it was confusing to know where to go. We ordered sandwiches at one spot and were given an order slip. We didn't realize you need to then get in line and pay and also order coffee at same place you pay. There's another register by the coffee which apparently wasn't being used ( of course we went to the wrong one first) and no one is there to direct you...not are there signs. The sandwich offerings are good. However, they didn't put tomato or garlic aioli I ordered on mine. When I had to go back in I overheard the cook saying he did put it on ...NOT UNLESS ITS INVISIBLE. The other gentleman ended up getting some for me. But that was awkward and I didn't want to go back outside to get it to prove it. Coffee is ok. Adorable little market/cafe in seemingly nowhere. We stumbled upon it looking for something healthier to eat besides the regular fast food along the Highway. It has east coast vibes. It was pretty expensive but you get actual food, not overly process junk that makes you feel sick later. Perfect roadside stop for a break.
