These guys are good; they may even be great, but as the saying goes, 'You've got to be a brain surgeon to pick a good brain surgeon.' In short, I'm no IT expert; I'm also not terribly literate. Having said that, I've consulted to, and designed CRM systems for many large corporations including News Ltd and did the initial market research for Microsoft to launch Windows NT and Windows Advanced Server in Australia in the 1990's; so I've had considerable experience observing many IT systems applications vendors and integrators in action, as well as had to manage our own network of servers with up to 50 users. They fixed a ransomware attack fast and recognised a hardware problem in 5 minutes others had not recognised in a whole lot more time. So for this area, they are excellent; and good value. If you maximise the productivity of IT in your business, you suffer substantial loss the moment your systems are down - these guys charges are insignificant compared to those losses. read more

I used to love them, but their service has gone down hill over the years. The nerds will be talking to several customers at the same time, leaving you hanging trying to figure out if they are still there. One time the nerd gave me wrong info about what programs I had on my computer. They wont accept checks for payment. They dont always return emails. The convenience is nice having them fix your computer remotely. read more

Had them come out and repair computer . They told me hard drive needed to be replaced..paid them to replace.. Still had same problem Paid them more money to repair..Still not right.. took to another place and they told me it had nothing to do with hard drive .Problem was solved after a 10.00 part was found bad.. Total scam. Free diagnostics... followed by "oh, we need to run an advanced diagnostics with NO GUARANTEE it can be fixed...and oh by the way, that'll be $155" ...Read on: My laptop keyboard and track pad completely died. System ran fine, would turn on normally, just unable to use any controls. Dropped off the laptop at the Marconi location on Thursday morning. Dingy little place. Tech "expert" (more like Big Mac for breakfast, lunch, and dinner expert) comes bumbling out from behind a wall wiping his nose with his hand then sits down to manhandle my laptop. I explain what's wrong, he switches it on and takes a look, then repeats exactly what I said as though he had just made some incredible revelation. He then gives me the textbook "we'll run a standard diagnostics FREE OF CHARGE (he sounded so proud and eager to tell me that) then we'll call and give you an update." Didn't get a call till Monday morning from an aggressive, borderline hostile gentleman demanding $155 for an advanced diagnostics test which he insistingly keeps re-wording as a 'non-refundable deposit'. I ask "Does that mean it can be fixed?" His answer, "I don't know, that's what the advanced diagnostics is for." I reply, "So I'm paying you $155 to SEE if you can fix it?" Here's where it gets good. He completely avoids my question and says "the $155 can be applied to a data transfer service we provide in case there are docs/pics/music files that you wish to be saved OR you can apply the $155 to the purchase of any of our refurbished products." I ask again, "SO I AM PAYING YOU $155 FOR YOU TO DETERMINE IF IT CAN BE FIXED??" He again completely skirts the question and hits me with the same "you can apply the non-refundable deposit (which I find downright amusing that they have the gall to call it that) to the transfer service or product" $155 to transfer documents and pictures??????? GTFO!!!! Long story short. I said NO THANKS. Picked up my laptop Tuesday morning, took it to iFix in Davis. iFix called me a few hours later with an explanation of what's wrong and that they can fix it SAME DAY FOR $85!! 10 am drop off, 5 pm pickup, and $85 later, my laptop is working good as new. I noticed they even gave my laptop a good cleaning. Yelpers/customers: YOU"VE BEEN WARNED. Nerds on Call prey on naive, oblivious, computer noobs. Their 5 star reviews (most of which are conveniently on their home site) are from moms and dads, the elderly, and generally people that don't know an on from an off switch. Go to iFix. I really wanted to give these guys a high rating but what started out extremely promising just turned to garbage after. It was like Midas with the golden touch had an incompetent half brother that turned everything into $hit. The original people I dealt with were phenomenal on the phone and seemed to know what they were doing (I have over 20 years in IT myself but my knowledge is so rusty and did not feel like taking the time to work on what was essentially a play computer for my wife and the nanny). After contracting them to do remote diagnostics on my work computer and game computer, we started to discuss a virus they found on the game rig. The day crew was excellent but the latter people they had work on my system did not seem as competent (I had the computer up on my big screen and was working on my laptop and periodically looking up to see what they were doing). I figured, take off the control freak gloves and let these guys do their work. It started taking too long (as in days, going into a week) so I spoke to the original person who sold me on maintenance (I think his name was Tony) and decided to trust that they could figure out the problems better if I shipped the computer to them to fix and while out there, gave him a list of things I wanted to upgrade on it along with a special request "DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DELETE OR REFORMAT HARD DRIVE WITHOUT ASKING ME AND MAKING SURE THAT THE 6 MONTHS OF BABY PICTURES AND VIDEOS ARE AT LEAST SAVED, music files to be saved after that as well" So I wait quite some time and finally get my computer "fixed" and upgraded. All my irreplaceable pictures and much of my music gone! Much of my software gone! But who cares about the software when MY CHILDS 1st 6 months are gone!!!! Luckily I had some saved on other computers but not all of them as I figured since they charged me for full backup remotely, and were going to do a local backup that they would not lose the pics. I figured wrong. Even this could be repairable since I am sure somewhere they may have the files but to add to the fact that they would call at the exact times I asked them to not call as I am unavailable (after 9am usually in the morning when I told them I am working and not near my home computer and please call back after 4pm at least) but then they would promise to call and not call me for days or weeks. Then they would call at 9am or 12 noon basically any time BUT the time I asked for a call back and say sorry we will call after 4pm or at 6pm and never call me back. I really liked the guys I spoke to there, I had nice conversation with some of them but combining this level of incompetence with a lack of caring (they charged me in total upwards of $1600 to upgrade the one computer and do maintenance on both yet never finished...hell, never even completed a diagnostic on my main computer but part of that is my fault since after they screwed up the first, I told them to fix that before I even think about letting them back into my main one). I was going to let this whole thing drop but they had to open up an old wound and several months later (ths was all last year) they call me last week asking about my service contract and if I want to renew it. This is the same service contract that I told them to not charge me for but they did anyways that you will see complaints for on this forum. So they ruin a computer and charge me $1600 or $1700 for it, they lose my baby pictures and files, they lose most of my music, they took over a month to do this, they never finish the work nor try to make good on it (sorry but calling me over and over while I am at work and saying oops ya we will call you after 4 or 5 and never calling, is not trying to help your client), yet they want to call me to renew a service contract that I told them I do not want and that I was nice enough to not take them to court after charging me anyways for. I tried to like these guys and tried really hard to want this to be an incredible review since as I said there are some really knowledgeable and friendly people working there, but sadly they seem to get overloaded and hand it to the Hodors of the company (my nerd reference). What kind of service is this? They make people pay for support and the people that are supporting their customers have no experience what so ever. Most of them have never worked in a technical support position prior to this company. Do you want to give your money to people who are practicing their home grown skills on you and your computers sensitive data? Mistakes from these guys happen regularly, I wouldn't recommend having your computer touched by any of these people or contacting them for any help. God forbid you have a simple question about a price for work! They will ask for all of your information. They don't even drug test their employees! C'mon now! Who doesn't drug test these days? They don't keep in contact with customers and give updates and they don't know the meaning of customer service...literally. I'm not joking. Ok, I feel bad. After watching these guys on Good Day Sacramento, I recommended my mom use them to get her computer cleaned up and protected. She is not super tech savvy, so I was there to help her get it started. Brandon made it sound like it was pretty straight forward. He said it would work overnight and they would touch base with her the next day. Well, it's been a couple of days now and things still aren't right. The system timed out at 9pm and didn't run overnight (even though she was told it would). She is getting passed around from tech to tech and each time a tech tells her they will call back, they simply don't or they leave for lunch without a simple call to say that! I wish I could sit there in front of her computer and help, but I can't. :( Bottom line is the tech's need to just keep her informed. She understands that it can only go as fast as the internet (and she has highspeed), but they need to call back when they say they will and just get it done. She's paying a lot of $$$! read more

My spidey senses started tingling after the guy at the front desk asked me "how much did you pay for this new" before I left after checking in my daughter's laptop for a repair. It's a newer laptop, and I figured it wouldn't be a terribly difficult fix, but this place also doesn't like to commit to anything in their explanations--like if you ask them straight-up "can this part be replaced?" they are hesitant to say anything. I asked, "can you fix this screen" and they said "we will take a look and see what we can do." I didn't know fixing screens is rocket science now, considering some kid in Elk Grove replaced my iPhone screen in 20 minutes one afternoon, so maybe I should have taken my laptop to him. But anyways, long story short, I brought in a laptop to get the screen replaced because it had been dropped and broken--everything else was fine on the machine. I finally get the quote to repair the $279 (new) machine--they want $303 to fix it. Okay, let's break down the charges, shall we: They CAN'T fix it, it turns out, but they can send it to Acer, who CAN fix it--so they want $154 to "facilitate the repair with Acer" (the girl on the phone couldn't explain what this means, but I'm assuming it covers them filling out the "help" ticket that you can do online via Acer's website before sending them a product to repair). Next charge: $129 as their "minimum service fee." Now, call me crazy, but you can't get much more minimum in service than doing nothing and having somebody else fix the laptop, but I understand that they want their piece of the pie, too. Next charge: $25 to ship it to Acer (I guess that can't be included in the "facilitating repairs with Acer" charge). Total to repair a $279 Chromebook: $303. I went online to Acer's website and found out I can simply fill out a help ticket and ship them the Chromebook myself . . . I found this whole experience with Nerds On Call to reek of bait and switch, inflated prices, and a bunch of B.S.. I would never recommend this place to ANYONE who needs a computer repair--unless paying more than the value of your item with a list of vague charges seems valid, I would take Best Buy's Geek Squad over this. read more

The cost of a new Nexus 7 (1st gen) on Amazon is $190, the manufacturer's charge to replace a cracked screen is $170. The Nerds on Call estimate for the same repair is $220. This was for a shipped repair, not an on-site service call. incidentally, the screen assembly is available for less than $70. read more

ihad work done replacing a drive after 5 days i got my PC back. Soon after I started having problem downloading w fire-wire from a Panasonic video camera i thought at first the camera was bad. A few months later my Grandson came over to visit and tryed to play a dvd in the pc/dvd player it did work and was missing some drivers infact The orginal HP DVD player was missing from my start menu. oh and i had several Phil Lesh downloads in Itunes that are shown with a (!) saying the file cant be found. when i confronted nerds they wanted me to pay them to fix what they broke! they seemed confused and the tech told me he just started working on PC's. read more

Ok...I don't know what went wrong with everyone else, but we had an amazing experience with Michael at Nerds. He has been very responsive to our IT issues, including a ridiculously complicated home stereo system that another guy started and couldn't get around to finishing. Michael is professional, smart and (really!) great at explaining some difficult concepts (for me at least). He made some great recommendations about equipment and we have enjoyed working with him. Searched my phone for computer repair and found these guys. While they did a good job on their SEO the service dosen't match. I was having issues with my computer and took it to them. I explained that the computer was not starting up and I thought it was a power supply issue. No quote was given and I figured I would get a call with the problem and a cost. Call came and learned that the motherboard was history. Simple I will purchase another computer and have them transfer the data to the new hard drive. Brought in the new computer and dropped it off, couple of days later I get a call that there's not enough room on my hard drive for all my data and they tried to upsell me on a new hard drive. When I did't bite on that they informed me they could compress the files, still no quote. The data was transferred and got a call that it was ready, then I get the cost $129... After a little back and forth they aggreed to erase their work and give me back the computers. I took both computers to Computer Works in Yuba City where the tech says "why do a data transfer, let's just pull the hard drive from your old computer and put it in your new one" how simple. Five minutes later I'm out the door for $30 I have all my data and programs to bout. read more

Mine was a long repair process, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately satisfying. My Mac Mini is over 3 years old, so when it became unbearable SLOW I was prepared to dump it and get a new computer. But the guys at Nerds on Call assured me they could make it good as new. So for $229 the adventure began. It was great that the work could be done remotely, I live over an hour away. But after 2 months of repairs, reboots, cleaning and clearing, the computer was still not running smoothly. The guys in the shop don't always return the calls left with the girls answering the phone. Eventually I had to take the computer in to the shop on Marconi and Cory went way above and beyond and did make it nearly as good as new. 4 stars instead of 5 because they don't always return phone calls. I also think the initial promise of making it good as new was way too optimistic. The Nerds must have spent over 30 hours on my computer, which is just not cost effective. But they DID make me happy. I heard of the company on a quick google search for local computer repair places and Nerds ON Call came up. I gave them a call and we arranged for one of there techs to come out to my home to take a look at my laptop. I explained to them for about a week (4 months ago) my laptop screen was not working, although I could still hear sounds of activity within the internal laptop as well as the keyboard lights were turning on. Since then I have purchased a laptop, and kept this one in a case. Around Christmas time, I turned it on, and it worked fine. Even afterwards I used it for about 5 days consecutively and it appears to have no problems, was just getting my laptop checked out since my sister needed here done also. The tech told me it migh need a LCD replacement, or some part (can't remember the name) might be slightly out of place causing the problem. After I have him permission to take the laptop back to there local store for diagnostic testing, I got a call from a representative in Sacramento saying that it needed to be sent to Sacramento since there were unable to pin-point the problem, and the computer showed no difficulties while in there possession. I declined to have my computer sent out, and Told them I would pick it up. Instead, they suggested to me that I schedule an appointment to have them drop it off, of coarse after they wanted me to state why I am refusing to get my computer sent out..for "documentation reasons." Nevertheless, after my laptop was brought back to my home, I attempted to turn it on and it would not come on. I let it charge overnight (thinking it might have been dead) and still wouldn't come on. Now three weeks later, and after many failed attempts laptop is not working at all. And it's not making any sounds of internal activity as it was when it did give me problem. After contacting the company they said it probably "finally gave out." So my laptop, which was purchased Jan 2010 (barley 3 yrs ago) allegedly "gave out." Imagine the frustration I have endured through this company. And to top it off, I get a call from a customer service representative the other day asking me how was my experience with Nerds On Call; but as I'm explaining what happen she keeps interrupting me to tell me "hopefully next time it's better.." And "we can come and do a free estimate if you'd like.." Nevertheless, I will NEVER associate myself with or business with this company again! If I could leave them half a star rating I would.
