I had the hard drive swapped on my iMac a little over a month ago. The team did a great job and they were pleasant to work with. But when I had to use my computers internal mic recently, my audio comes through muffled. Long story short the adhesive strips used to close the iMac back up were covering the small mic port. When I contacted Nerds on Call to explain my suspicion of this, they were super rude , never returned my calls, instead I had to keep calling them. I was very surprised because this was a complete 180 from my first experience with them. Anyhow, I ended up replacing the adhesive strips and my mic is perfect again. But I definitely wouldn't ever use these guys again, not because of a simple mistake with covering the mic (it happens) but because they treated me like shit when I even suggested there was a mistake made. read more

I have been having problems with remote work sessions disconnecting and reconnecting and initially brought my laptop to a corporate competitor, left it there for 3 days, only to have them call and say it was working "just fine" and the internet connection worked fine. I told them I never said I had an internet problem and explained it again and that it had to be the laptop as I've checked everything else. They wanted to come to my location and test the equipment at a rather expensive rate. When I explained the problem again they really didn't listen and gave me a blank stare. It seemed they wanted to take the most expensive route. I walked into Nerds On Call yesterday and talked to Cameron. It took him about five minute of asking me questions to determine the most likely problem was that my laptop was not properly updating Windows and that the update I had last downloaded was problematic. He suggested I try updating to the newest update manually first and then come back in if it didn't work. I did exactly what he said to do and now everything works perfectly. He certainly could have taken my laptop and charged a fee, but he didn't which I found refreshing. The moral of the story is....this location now has me as a client if I ever need a repair. read more

If you are having problems with your computers, don't call these guys. Unless you have a gaming computer, they are completely clueless. On Friday of last week, their technician deleted ALL of our company files. When I called them in a panic in Monday, because we weren't able to conduct business due to the fact that ALL of our files were in the recycle bin, they were rude and cut me off when I was trying to explain to them what happened and basically dismissed me, telling me that they'll see me at 2 that afternoon. I couldn't wait until 2. We ended up having to pay another company over $300 to fix the mess the nerds made. After emailing every day since Monday, I finally got a call back today, (Thursday) not from a supervisor as I had requested, but from a smart ass who, when I explained what had happened, called me a liar. We will NEVER do business with this bunch of clowns again, and I highly encourage to not let them touch your computer if there is anything that you value on it. read more

UPDATE #1: This review caught the attention of Nicole, who called me directly. We had a much more pleasant conversation, in which she told me that they were unable to easily test the power supply (it is a touchscreen computer). I decided I would take the time to do the testing and/or replacement myself. UPDATE #2: So.... I received another phone call from Nicole at Nerds on Call pressuring me to improve my review on Yelp!. Now, I like to think I'm a fairly reasonable and level-headed guy. I had previously told her I would update the review to reflect our conversation (which I did, above), and I committed again to take a "second" look. Here's how the experience balances out for me: Pro: -The phone call I made was great and the person told me what I wanted to hear (+1). -The drop-off was average - the guy at the desk seemed to have a hard time hearing or remembering spellings - like my name and address - but I repeated myself to his satisfaction (+0). -The first response from Nicole was nice. She explained the situation, offered a variety of solutions, and committed to following up with Leroy (+5). Total positive: +6 Con: -The second call from Nicole pressuring me to change my Yelp! review was ... let's say, odd (-1). -Driving almost one hour to discover what I was told on the phone wasn't accurate (-2). -Demanding (Leroy) that I pay $130 for the diagnostic I expected to receive for free (-2). -Encountering Zuul (the Gatekeeper) on the telephone in all his demi-godliness (-10). -Returning home with zero progress and two broken computers (-2). (I didn't mention before that I took two for diagnostic... but it's the whole truth. The second needs a PSU that they wanted to charge $140 for) Total negative: -17 I'd give another +5 to staff at the Department of Consumer Affairs, but that's a different review. What do y'all think? With almost 3:1 negative rating, does this review deserve more than 1 star? I'll add one just because I'm a nice guy... ------------- Issue #1 - The Money The power button on my computer stopped working. Last week, I took the machine apart and removed the power supply (I've been working on computers since 1997). I called Nerds on Call and asked if they could test the power supply for me. The person on the phone said that they could do it and there would be no charge. The person also said that they do free diagnostics on the whole computer. I said "So I should put the thing back together and bring it all to you, then," and he agreed. Today, I dropped the computer off at Nerds on Call and described the above conversation. I told the person at the desk that I believed the problem was with the power supply. I asked whether their diagnostic was quick enough that I could wait because the drive was more than 20 minutes, and was told that it would probably take 3-5 business days. Two hours later, I received a call from Leroy saying that they tried to plug in the computer and it wouldn't turn on. Leroy said that in order to test the power supply, I needed to pay them $130. This was a complete bait & switch and appears to be intended to lure individuals to their shop with a promise of free diagnostics and then coerce them into paying exorbitant fees. Issue #2 - Customer Service After I explained the above to Leroy and was subjected to the broken record of needing to pay for the diagnostic, I asked for contact information for the owner of Nerds on Call. I was told that Ryan Eldridge was the owner, but that I could not call him. Leroy told me that he didn't have a phone number to reach the owner, and that he would not ask the owner to call me. Realizing that some owners are "at a distance", I asked for contact information for Leroy's supervisor. Leroy told me his supervisor was Nicole, but would not transfer my call to her. He also refused to provide me with a means to contact Nicole, and he refused to ask Nicole to call me. Leroy was incredibly offensive on the phone and seemed to consider himself some sort of "gatekeeper". I tried to convince Leroy that I wanted to talk to Nicole because of his behavior (and not the real problem ... because that wasn't good enough for Leroy). Leroy said that he was able to handle any concerns I had about his behavior. Yes ... this guy told me that the only person I could complain to about his service was him. After I threatened to call the licensing bureau, Leroy agreed that he would talk to Nicole. But ... he said that he would take Nicole's response and call me back. I would not be allowed to talk to his supervisor. I asked how I could verify that he had actually had a conversation with her - he said that he didn't have a way to do that, but he would call me back with her response. read more

I took my laptop here when my dog ripped the power cord out and messed up the DC jack. I should begin by saying that it HAS been fixed and is in working order, however, after waiting for five days for the part to come in, I finally called (because nobody had called me) and the operator said, "Oh, yeah, it's been finished for a couple days." So, I went to go pick it up and the gal that fixed it showed me it had been repaired, but when she booted it up to demonstrate, the battery wasn't charging. She told me it was likely a new battery, so I took the laptop home and ordered a new battery. When the battery arrived, that was not the problem, so I was forced to take it back. After keeping it another day or two, she told me it was a software issue with Sony, but it definitely was NOT a problem before I took it in to Nerds on Call. I picked up my laptop (this is my third visit to their location, if you're counting, over the course of eight days) and brought it home. Imagine my surprise when I got it back to my house, and the wireless had absolutely NO range at all. Again, this was not an issue before I took it to them to repair a DC jack. I took it the next morning BACK to their location where it took an hour to re-diagnose and figure out that she had unplugged one of the antennas and did not plug it back it. (Side note - after she had replugged it, it took another twenty minutes to figure out that the reason it couldn't connect at that point was because of their wireless network). Ultimately, they fixed the problem, didn't charge me for any of the either two times I had to bring it back, and it was reasonably priced. HOWEVER, I would seriously reconsider taking anything back to them. There must be someone who is as reasonably priced but is has a slightly higher attention to detail. read more

Despite the negative reviews here on yelp I was in desprate need to repair my computer that stopped working. I called around town just trying to find someone who could look at it to tell me what the issue was and the cost to repair (if necessary). The Geek Squad over at Best Buy wouldn't even entertain the thought of glancing at it unless we paid $70. Fry's said it would be $120 to diagnose the hard drive and then I got to searching online for a local outfit that would be courtesous enough to look at our unit to determine if it was even worth the time or money to savage. To the rescue came Nerds on Call! I found them on google.com, call and made an appointment. The service from the first call was excellent! Adam came out to my home after 7 pm and inspected my hard drive and was able to diagnose the problem within minutes. He asked if he could take the unit back to the shop to double check that the problem was the power box and would call with the cost to replace if in fact that was the issue. A few days later I received the call from Adam letting me know that the power box needed to be replaced and said he would have an agent call me back with the price to replace. I received that call within minutes and the price was exceptional and approved immediately! Dylan is the man. I built a custom PC and when I finally started it up, I got BSOD. I was stuck in a restart loop and was pretty scared I'd wasted money on the build. Dylan was able to diagnose and correct the issue within a day! Because of the flat rate, I didn't have to worry about hourly costs. In addition to fixing the main issue, he was able to install extra hard drives I had laying around and correct fan wiring within the case (even suggested more optimal cooling). My computer was on the fritz one night after deciding to start up a game of Dark Forces (classic old star wars game). Anyway, I'm a big gamer so I had a G73 ASUS and like a moron, I had the lappy on my comforter in bed as I was playing. I found Nerds on Call and liked what they seemed to portray so I gave them a try. Was greeted after waiting a minute or two just before closing so kudos to them for letting me stop by. Explained my problem and handed over the keys, so to speak and waited for their diagnostic. They called me up a couple days later, one day earlier than they originally said :), telling me they didn't know what the problem was yet but they'd like my permission to try putting thermal paste (I believe they said) on the CPU to see if that would fix the problem. It didn't but they did find out the GPU was dead, fried and no good so there wasn't much of a point to continue finding out anymore problems after that. It was about $170 total to get all that done but nice as they were, they offered to let me get a new computer and bring it in to them and they'll re-image my old hard drive to the new computer, free of charge. They said since they weren't able to fix my problem they didn't want me walking away empty handed! Very kind of them, in my opinion. Good place with nice people. Each time I got a call, the person was pleasant and professional in updating me on my computer. I only leave off a star for the strange fix, halfway through the diagnostic. If they weren't sure what the problem was, and it was clear they didn't even get to the GPU, why suggest a fix? read more

I called them to have a technician come to my office to investigate why my computer was shutting down each time I sent a print order. Dylan looked at the system and was baffled by the problem and re-directed the printer spooler. That $149 call produced zero. Next he came out a second time to take my computer to his shop to reinstall Windows 7. That would be an additional $298. I opted out of that suggestion as I felt I was subsidizing him shooting into darkness to see if he could hit anything. After I thought about it for a minute, I decided to check the surge protector since the added surge from turning on the printer seemed to be overwhelming it. Bingo, problem solved for $50. Don't look for a brain tumor when the patient is having a heart attack. I wasted time and money and they have lost a customer. read more

Solid service. I had taken my computer to their (now closed) Stockton office for repair. They were able to fix it promptly and did a good job. I purchased the optional 1 year warranty on the part when I got it. Six months later, the part failed. However, their Stockton office was no longer open and they had moved all of the operations from that office to the location on Marconi in Sacramento. This was a bit problematic for me because what was a 30-40 minute drive to their offices was now well over 90 minutes for me. I arranged time to drive up there and drop of the machine for them to look at it and see what had happened. They determined that the part had failed they gladly replaced it under warranty. However, when I got my computer home, I found that the warranty repair work had caused an issue with the operation of my computer. I called and after discussing the issue with their customer service representatives, I was able to meet one of their techs at the halfway point (in Stockton) and drop off the computer. They diagnosed the issue and discovered that it was an issue with their repair work. They fixed it and met with me to return the computer. Service was prompt, and their customer service was solid. They took care of the issue and backed up their service well. I would recommend these people to anyone in the area. Unfortunately, since they are now so far from me, I will not likely be able to use them if I have other issues with any other computers I own and will have to seek more local service. read more

I had never gone "outside" for computer repair and wish I'd chosen another repair service. Generally I had to call them to find out what was going on. They had my computer for a week and then called me to tell me my computer was ready when I had already picked it up hours before. They never asked if I was satisfied/happy with the service,and they didn't tell me what they fixed, except in jargon words. They were as impersonal as a business can be. When my computer was ready, they gave me an invoice that included 90 days of help from them, but would continue at $25 a month after 90 days. That was all set up and their office couldn't undo it. They said I had to call the main number, which I did and got patched back to someone in Sacramento who said he would take that off my account. We'll see. I think it is dishonest to build in a monthly $25 charge for their help whether I want it or not. I am not at all happy with the repairs.They stuck their icons on my desktop and some of the ones I actually used are gone. My AOL account with all its bookmarks and contacts is gone. I will have to hire another person to put things back where I can use them. I didn't realize their repair would mean I had to reset my online banking accounts which was annoying.This has cost me weeks. I know I am entitled to three more months of "help" from them, but I don't think they can speak my language. read more

Scam Alert!!!!! I called them and told them exactly what happened to my wifes MacPro. They told me to bring it in and they would do a diagnostic test on it at NO COST. When I drove all the way out there the guy says it will be $150.00 for the test. I told him what I was told on the phone and he just looked at me. He said we like to give the details in person. DETAILS, WTF, I gave all the details on the phone. "Well we only give a free diagnostic for software and outside physical appearance." I said, I told the guy that water was split on the computer when I was on the phone and it would not turn on, he said we'll run the test on it for free. I went to another place on J street and he said there would be no charge to find out what is wrong with your computer and then you can decide what to do next. A third place told me the same thing. The technical support for my 89 yo grandmother was fine and the reason they are getting 2 stars. The problem I have with this company is that when she died with 4 months of service already prepaid (she was billed for 6 months service in advance) they refused to issue a refund for the unused time. That is reason enough for me to not recommend this company. Update 5/11/16: Nerds On Call contacted me and resolved this problem. We still don't agree regarding Nerds policy but they did issue me a refund and that's worth one more star as far as I'm concerned. If I hadn't had to go through all this trouble to get a refund they would be getting 5 stars. Update 5/16/16: When we say "the customer is always right" it is not meant to be taken literally as though every word spoken by the customer is God's own truth. What it does mean, however, is the customer pays the bills and without them your company would cease to exist. When you publicly attack a customer you present yourself as uncaring and in this case, unsympathetic. You might argue that I am not your customer and I would agree that by your actions that unsavory situation is not likely to ever come to pass. The story you have fabricated in an attempt to cast me in an unfavorable light does not hold any water. And it's not because of what I said or what you said. It's what you didn't say, or do, that matters. You would find it hard to convince anyone that after having agreed to close this account you should not have immediately offered to refund the remaining prepaid balance into the bank account you have on file, without me having to ask. Somehow I was able to sufficiently convince you of who I was to persuade you to close the account, but not enough to warrant your company issuing a refund. The initial phone call to your company should have gone one of two ways: either you accepted that I had the proper authority to close the account for the deceased and facilitate the refund or you did not accept that I was in a position to do any of this and refused to do anything until I was able to verify that I was indeed authorized to be talking to you regarding this account. You however chose a 3rd course, which was to allow me to close the account but then refuse to issue a refund, a situation I can't help but point out is the most advantageous to your establishment, i.e. getting paid to do nothing. I do thank you for your entertaining description regarding "your side of the story." It has convinced me that I was correct in thinking that your company has more regard for being right than in practicing a modicum of fellow feeling in ones time of need. Did I mention that someone I care for very much died recently? I believe that is what initiated this entire interaction and yet it is clearly more important that you be right. So in the spirit of making sure you are seen as infallible I will state for the record that everything you said is absolutely correct and I have purported myself as a complete jerk this entire time. Had to drop a star in my review. The red line under misspelled words showed, but after going to Nerds on Call, the correct spelling wouldn't pop up, not in Word, websites, or even here on Yelp. As a bad speller, having the correct spelling pop up is more important than anything on my laptop. Jeremy V worked patiently on it for a few hours... but nothing worked Two of his suggestions were to take it into the shop (previously it was taken into the shop, where I was told NOT to) and his other suggestion was to hook my laptop up with a mouse or use a wireless mouse!!! At least he didn't suggest digging out an old dictionary!!! seriously Was FRUSTRATED, planned on taking it back into Nerds on Call shop, demanding old hard drive put back in, laptop restored back to the way it was, problems and all, get $ refunded & update Yelp to 1 star...I was MAD...but then another technician came in and looked at the "ticket"...he made a suggestion to Jeremy V that solved my problem, in seconds!!! I hired Nerds on call to troubleshoot problems with emailing invoices from Quick Books. They tried several times but could not fix it. I finally signed up with another online repair service, who discovered the problem was the firewall of my virus protection. Additionally, I found it problematic that Nerds don't provide after hours service, which is provided by my new online computer repair people. Having received no value for my investment with Nerds, I called and emailed asking for a refund of the $450 I had paid to cover all my office computers and they were Completely Unresponsive. My trusty old laptop running on Windows XP was running slow...it was taking over a minute if not longer to load my browser and taking over a minute if not longer to go from page to page. Even programs were taking for ever to load. I tried a malware removal program which took forever to run. What it did fine, didn't fix the problem. Not having time to try to fix this issue, I took it to Nerds On Call. I paid $179 to have my laptop serviced. Malware was removed and temporary files were deleted. I picked it up at the shop and noticed when I loaded my browser...it was still running slow but I figured that was the best that could be done considering my laptop was an old computer running Windows XP. I took it home and noticed it was running just as slow as it was before I brought it in. I did some research and found the problem. It was not malware because it was running just as slow after the shop removed the malware and cleaned up temporary files. I opened up Task Manager and discovered that one SVCHOST.EXE file was utilizing 99% of my CPU. (SVCHOST files...many which are running, are used to retrieve different DDL (Dynamic Link Library) files which are needed to run different applications (programs)). I "Ended the Process" of this file and discovered that my laptop was now running at "grease lightning" speed. I later rebooted my computer and discovered the problem came back. After further research, I discovered that the problem was caused by a bug in the latest Microsoft Update of Windows XP. The permanent fix was to disable "Automatic Updates." I did this and now the issue is permanently fixed. This shop released my computer back to me running at the same slow speed.This is unacceptable...basically $179 spent for naught. I appreciate my computer being cleaned up...but nevertheless...returned to me NOT FIXED.
