Food is good, recent service was terrible. They are not adequately staffed, our waiter was (trying) to handle over 10 tables. Took a 1/2 hour before we could get the waiter to take our order. At the end, took 40 minutes to get and sign a check- and bill had to be corrected as part of our order never came. Simple, one-course lunch took over 2 hours. My first time going to Nero's drive past all the time going to Short Hills Mall. Decided to try for lunch after appointment in Livingston. The 3 stars are really because of server Nick he was nice and attentive very engaging. So the food was okay not great my fries and chips tasted burnt I believe because frying oil was not changed and it just tasted like burned tasteless nothing. My chopped salad was good. I came here for lunch with some colleagues and was pleasantly surprised at how busy this place got mid day! I ordered a steak sandwich (medium rare) and it came with fries the steak was cooked well in some areas and then very raw in others. The flavors were good so it didn't phase me much. The servers were fast and attentive but I kind of feel like we were a little rushed. 2-3 tables of people quickly turned to a full room of people so I can certainly understand needing turnover but it felt like things were taken away pretty fast? I never write reviews but after my experience here I have to. I went up to the hostess with my family asking for a table and she said that there were currently none available and if we would like to wait. We said yes and she went to see how long the wait would be. After taking a few minutes she said that we would be able to be seated right away. We were led to a table that was under the direct sun and still had a check on it. We asked if we could be moved inside because it was too hot and the server asked if sitting in a booth was okay. We said yes because we preferred that instead of sitting under the sun. We then went inside and saw that there were two tables open as the server was leading us to the booths. We asked if we could sit at a table in the main dining area instead as they appeared open and available and the server told us we could take it. I didn't appreciate having to ask multiple times to get a good table. Clearly, they had plenty of space available and those spots weren't reserved because nobody else was coming in and the outdoor seating area was practically empty when we left. It almost felt as if they were being racist towards us as we were the only people of color dining at the restaurant at the time. I don't know if this was an issue with a select few employees or the establishment in general. read more

I finally got to eat here after a couple attempts without a reservation (even on a weeknight!). It was packed on a Wednesday night. We had the shrimp cocktail and shoestring fries, which were both excellent. The cocktail menu had so many delicious-sounding drinks, it was hard to choose. The bourbon smash was perfect and not too sweet. Each of us had a pasta dish, and everything was great. Honestly, I don't love the old school ambiance, and the table cloths are a bit much, but because the restaurant was so lively and the service was attentive, I don't mind. Heard some mixed reviews for this place but when I found out we could walk there and get our drink on, plus eat a nice meal, we gave it a shot. That was a mistake! Nero's was thoroughly disappointing. Our waiter sucked; maybe he was just slammed, but he still sucked. We told him it was our first time here so he could recommend some fan favorites and near misses. He failed to read the specials which was just plain dumb. When we asked him why he didn't tell them to us he said he thought we knew what we wanted to order. Jackass - didn't we just tell you we'd never been here. We ordered a bottle of wine - they ran out of it and had to get one from the basement. That took 20 minutes. Our apps were OK, nothing to write home about (we got clam chowder and clams oreganata). It was someone's birthday and they sang and brought a cake - nice gesture. That was until they also shut ALL the lights off in the restaurant to do this. Are you serious? We're all literally sitting in the dark - people are trying to eat, read a menu and order. Hello!?! Finally, after being there more than an hour, we asked where our food was. The waiter said it was "on the fire, coming right out." Another 20 minutes go by and still no food. When it FINALLY came, it was cold. That was the last straw. We sent the food back and asked for the bill. A manager came over and told us they were really busy for a Friday night an apologized for the horrible service and experience. Shove it lady - it's Friday night, you're a restaurant, get with the program, you should be busy, but not too busy to serve your guests. Having been a long time resident of Livingston, NJ we visited Nero's another time hoping the experience would be different than prior occasions. Unfortunately, our hopes and wishes were not realized. Nero's is managed and patronized by an obnoxious pretentious group of people who perceive themselves to be more important than they are. Despite our expressed desires, we were seated in the old "back room" with absolutely no ambience. To make matters worse, we were seated next to 2 families with 7 young children whose manners were as absent as their parents' respect for others. This, after all, was a Friday night, at an allegedly high class establishment and not Chucky Cheese on a Saturday afternoon. Despite 3 separate requests to be reseated (relocated) to a different section, we were forced to endure these pretentious self important people whose children believe running around the restaurant bumping into others' chairs is acceptable behavior. Over the decades, each time we have visited Nero's we expected that our prior experiences were atypical or exceptions to the "general rule". We asked ourselves: how can this place survive if they treat patrons as they do. However, our repeated experiences demonstrate that the way we we have been treated is the status quo for Nero's. Unless you are a "regular", be prepared to be treated like dirt! We will NEVER. visit Nero's again. While I am certain, Nero's will continue to overcharge its patrons for overrated food in a less than desirable atmosphere, I hope that is not the case. Nero's ownership and management should appreciate that patrons have choices and that their way of dong business is unacceptable. read more

Pretty good food, but vastly overpriced for what they're doing. They are consistently inconsistent. Some of the servers are outstanding. Others simply don't have their act together. Very good selection of beer and fun cocktails. They do a great job of adding specials to the menu on top of their already extensive menu. The food is well prepared and fresh. However, from time to time those service issues rear their ugly head. Every so often the food takes way too long to arrive. I simply can't get past how much they're charging. At their price point, the food and service has to be consistently spot on. The food is quite good though not outstanding. The service is usually excellent but subject to lapses. Another thing that strikes me is their birthday routine. Sure it's great to bring out the cake and candles and sing. However, do you really need to dim all of the lights to the point that other diners are in uncomfortable darkness? I ordered the turkey burger with mac and cheese. The turkey burger was yummy but the mac and cheese.....I found several white hairs and an eyelash in it. The recipe also changed since I last had it sometime last year. Instead of a cheese sauce, it looks like they just placed the pasta in a roux and topped it off with a shredded cheese. Hopefully they will consider going back to the old recipe and make sure to tie their hair back when dealing with food. read more

See the Sunnyview Farms business acumen? My gentleman asked for ONE of the meatballs they were serving at the bar- the waitstaff couldn't accommodate as " bar was serving tapas. You should have ordered it there if you wanted it." OK, so we ordered a grilled calamari: 2, just 2, dried up tentacles with a scoop of cannelloni beans!!! WTF?? My guy had a steak that was cooked perfectly. I had " Kobe" ( yeah right) bolognasse. The pasta was WAY overcooked- I couldn't pick it up with a fork. It wS boiling hot! Bar quality food with fine dining sounding menu and prices. The pictures on their website are deceiving - the octopus appetizer there is pictured with 3 big tentacles and small bean salad on the side, the actual dish is a bowl of beans with one and a half tiny tentacles. The tuna entree was decent quality fish but the salad it comes with was lacking flavor. I was there last week with 3 friends for lunch and I have to say it was not even GOOD. The cost with lunch and two drinks a piece no desert was $67.00. The first thing was the shrimp was good but I asked for hot sauce it never came out. The second thing I confirmed that the meal I had ordered had no potatoes.. well that did not happen and the chicken was over cooked ROCKS... which had to be washed down with a few drinks. Spent the entire night on the can after eating some of their Oysters from the Raw Bar. It was troubling. The other appetizers were good and my wife enjoyed her Chicken Parmigiana. We live about 10 minutes away and I almost didn't make it home and to the bathroom in time. In fact, its really very good, i just usually choose more adventurous places to go. I have to disagree with the negative posts on here esp when it comes to quality, service and portions. The shrimp cocktail is so fresh all the time and they are huge (I usually order 3 shrimp for me as they are a la carte ) next I usually split a Julio salad, consistently good I must say. The baked potato for a side can serve 3 people and is delish!! Entee faves include chicken parm, veal Milanese, chciken aglio, and any steak dish... The carrot cake dessert can feed 4 people and is sooo big and fun to eat. Valet parking is wonderful as well, I never feel under or overdressed here because it really is the kind of establishment that can be an after work bite to a get dressed bday dinner!!! This place is such a great place to have nearby. It's been around forever which makes it nice because you always see familiar faces working. It's also the place to be so you almost always run into people you know, but it's a big place so you can also keep to yourself if you'd like. They have a great bar with awesome happy hour so that's always fun to go to. It's not a crazy bar though, usually 30 year olds and up, although the occasional younger groups will come in and enjoy as well. The food is amazing!! It's a big menu but not too big like some places have - handing you books to sift through! It's just the right size with a lot of classic dishes like chicken aglio (so good) and amazing steaks, as well as fun new dishes. The raw bar here is the only one I'll go to all year round etc. Because of it's freshness. You can't beat it here. Make a reservation and go trust me you won't be let down!!! read more

Went there with a group of 33 people from our yacht club and was surprisingly pleased at how good it was. They gave us a limited menu because of the large size group and was concerned that the chicken with fried onions was the only thing I wanted. When the chicken came I thought it maybe dry. Upon my first bite I realized that this chicken that was sautéed tasted more like delicious fried chicken. It was delicious and plentiful. I would go back again. read more

It is as good as it gets! Eating here at least once a week and I have never had a bad meal. Our server Mary Grace remembers our drinks and always tells us what's good on the menu; altho eveything is. The food was decent, but for a 5:30 reservation in a not terribly crowded restaurant, our food didn't come out until after 6:30 at least. Also, what i ordered without onions came with onions, and the steak that was ordered very well done came about medium. The small child we had with us also had to wait a while for her dinner, but it did come out about 20 before the rest of the food - the result being that as polite as she was for a while after she finished her food, she was just getting restless as ours came out. Frankly speaking, and this is not my first time here, I have never experienced a good dining experience. Flavor wise at best is 2.5 stars. If you love salt, you might give Nero's Grille 3 stars. Clams Oreganato, 6 of the smallest clams with a bread crumb mixture that was about 25% salt, the sauce was not bad, but didn't help the dish. Linguine with Clam sauce. I ordered it with whole wheat pasta. Again, overly salty but that was not my issue. The pasta, while it was al dente, was in pieces that was too short to twirl, and too long to stay on the fork. Seriously, for a dish that costs $26.00 for a plate of pasta, at least the pasta should be prepared properly. 5 other dishes were placed on the table and I had to wait an extra 10 minutes for my sub-par dish to arrive. The portion sizes are decent, and the food is amazing! They have a decent wine selection, and the wait staff is really helpful. There are a lot of private booths if that's what you're looking for, and nobody rushes you out. However, I found that the food was slightly overpriced. read more
