I put down a 20.00 deposit on him, said i had to wait 4 more days before i could see him, and they would call me. I cant believe how wonderful all the employees and volunteers were. I was looking to adopt a furrbaby almost two years ago after thinking about it and making sure I had enough time and resources. My first experience was with a dog Nilla who was a terrier mix and after getting her home she spent the next 2 hrs crying at my front door. I tried everything I could think of taking her outside, loving on her, etc. but she clearly was not happy there and after attempting to reach someone by phone I took her back. I was crying and felt so bad but the employees were so kind and understanding. They agreed it wasnt fair to her. I left that evening in tears and pretty adamant I wasnt going to try again. Im so glad I changed my mind. About a month later I decided to go see a few dogs at the humane society I saw online just to see how we did visiting, I was still very unsure. I went on a Sunday afternoon and I asked to visit with Koko a then 8 year old chihuahua. They were busy so I had to wait a lil while but when the employee came out of the room with Koko I was already thinking she was precious. We went in the room and Koko was giving me kisses and sniffing everything it took less then ten mins and I was ready to take her home. That day snd the first time every person there was so caring and kind. When Koko and I adopted one another it was just great. Shes become my child, my friend and it doesnt matter how bad of a day I have shes always right at the door when i get home w kisses and tail wagging. Had a great experience with front of the building staff, then the older lady with shoulder length gray hair not 100% on that (was not able to get a name because she just stormed off from us) was one of the rudest people i've ever encountered in a shelter/service environment. If you don't want to be deterred from adopting here, make sure you don't speak to the old lady. She treated us like we were children, mocked and yelled at us for sliding a paper over to see the kittens better and was extremely disrespectful. I have never experienced this before, she should not be working there if you want people to stay and actually adopt. I'm fairly positive this is not the first time this has happened based on reactions by other workers that were around when we went to make a complaint of her awful demeanor. Will probably never adopt here again because of her, she's ruining the help you're trying to get these animals. Would like to add we have adopted here before with amazing service! But like I said, we will never return after being treated like we were just now. read more

Great staff! Every person that works there truly cares about animals and wants to see each one go to a good home. Even the volunteers will go out of their way to help you find the right pet for you. They offer low cost vaccinations (call to make an appointment), and even help to feed your pet if you are struggling to do so. To anyone looking for a new pet, I highly recommend NHS as your place to search. To anyone just wanting a quick fix with no plans to adopt, yes, this place is for you too! I can't say enough great things about the wonderful folks at the Human Society! We went in looking for a dog and they were so wonderful! They listened carefully to our needs and did not blink an eye when we said that our small condo would only accept small dogs and that we were worried about allergies. In fact they simply used this information to narrow the search to small pups with hair instead of fur. With a glint in her eye, the kind woman at the front desk said she knew just the dog for us. They took us to a visiting room and within a short time the pup parade began. They brought in an adorable dog who while very sweet we didn't click with. I was worried that they might be unhappy that we didn't feel like this dog was for us - again not at all! It was simply on to the next, the dog that that thought might be our guy. Sure enough he was! I knew instantly this pup was for us and he seemed to too! The adoption process was easy and the requested donation was nominal. As we left with our new family member they rang a bell and you could tell that all the staff were thrilled to have saved another life. When I called a few weeks later to request immunization records I cried on the phone as I thanked them for saving my new family member and matching him with us! He is such an amazing little guy and without this no kill shelter his life could have ended far to early. We later learned that they had lovingly kept him for three long months. Far longer then most shelters would have hung in there. Also, in addition to updating his vaccines they had neutered & groomed him while he was there. I cannot say enough about the hero's from the Human Society! If you are thinking about a pet - start here!!! They have amazing dogs, all sorts of breeds including specialty breeds and all ages. No money could be paid for adoption fees, as there were no people-friendly cats available, when people-friendly cats were listed as available on their website. On the website, there was a cat, Petunia, who was 10 years old, and described as "I have been in retirement for some time now, which means only ONE thing! I know just how to enjoy all the good things in life. Naps, sunshine, movies and snuggles..." The receptionist said to come in after 3:00 pm. I did. I came to adopt her. When I spoke to the employee in charge of cats, she told me that Petunia couldn't be touched. A manager said the website was not updated as quickly as the internal system. This has nothing to do with the false advertising of the cat. But if this problem were relevant, why didn't the receptionist, who has access to the internal website, use that access to give the correct information about the availability of cats. Why was there no communication between the receptionist and the employee in charge of the cats? I spent $40 in total on ubers there and back to be victimized by false advertising, no attempt to address my complaint, and defensive employees, fearful to take any responsibility for anything. It was an "us against me" situation, and it was disgusting. This is not acceptable. I want someone to address these problems in communication and make them do better, make them realize they cannot get away with this level of sloppiness because it amounts to false advertising. I wrote to the Better Business Bureau. Sure, adopt a pet from this shelter. They treat the animals well. Care is not the problem. The problem is there is a touch-and-go chance on whether or not you will have a good experience within the obtuse maze of a bureaucratic system that does not work. read more

I drove over 40 miles to look at dogs because I was ready to adopt, but I was told I could not view any of the dogs; I had to look at pictures or go online, and then I could meet the one I was interested in. I'm sorry, a picture is not good enough for me, and what are they going to bring them out one by one? Wouldn't that waste their time? Last week my family rescued our first pet from the Nevada Humane Society and I can't say enough good things about our experience. Due to unfortunate circumstances with our last animals we knew finding the right fit was going to be a little challenging. Took the kitty to get fixed at the clinic. Staff was efficient and informative. They have a protocol that helps everything run smoothly. For example, cats must be in a carrier, and no blankets or anything in the cat carrier. They marked the carrier so that the correct one got returned to us. Pet is to be dropped off at a certain appointment time, and picked up within a window of time. Kitty was treated well, and had no post-operative issues. We adopted two cats from here at two different times and we had a great experience knowing we were making a difference. We adopted the first cat (Persia) a year ago. She is the sweetest little kitty and we love her to pieces. Six months later we adopted Max (the troublemaker) and he gets along wonderfully with Persia. The staff was friendly both times and helped us choose our cats. They informed us up front that Persia had a bad tooth that may need to be pulled. When we brought her home she wouldn't eat at all, so I took her to the clinic. They got her in right away and they ended up extracting 4 rotten teeth free of charge. I stopped by Nevada Humane in Reno yesterday to adopt a puppy that had been saved by Washoe County Animal Control. while sweet Feather wasn't a good personality fit w/my existing rescue pup, I still wanted to give shout-out to how well NHS is handling the COVID-19 crisis. Stopping by this shelter in person was pretty heart-breaking...there were a lot of folks there who rely on their pet food support program + I saw two sweet pups being surrendered by their owner. although the staff was overwhelmed, the volunteers were very compassionate and professional in interacting with the public which was good to see. during my appointment, they were also very generous with their time, in answering questions, and in letting me and my dog t-rex interact with feather. overall they are very similar to Bradshaw Animal Shelter in Sacramento where I adopted t-rex...meaning they directly transfer the most in-need animals here from animal control and do transparent behavioral + health assessments. so if you are on the fence about adopting or fostering an animal as a quarantine buddy, I'd strongly recommending checking them out (or donating to their food support program). read more

The amount of love and work the employees at Nevada Humane Society pour into taking care of the MANY animals in need warms my heart. Some of the animals have been there for YEARS and have surely forgotten what it's like on "the outside". My husband and I visit the shelter sometimes to make donations and provide "pep talks" to the dogs and cats (while giving them treats, if approved). The facility is organized and clean, operating like a well-oiled machine. Get another cat? No way, we already have two! Yes, that's what I told myself until my girlfriend showed the three kittens she was fostering on another social media site. I instantly fell in love with the long haired, gray and white male. The sweet little kittens were only six weeks old at the time and we were told that we had to wait until they were at least eight weeks old and at least two pounds. The wait was soooo long! My friend told me the day she was going to drop him off and that they would contact us after he was neutered and ready to go to his forever home. I received a call early afternoon and was told he would be ready at 4. We arrived at about 3:45. The waiting area is very well organized, brightly lit and clean. The staff (I know some were volunteers as well) were so helpful and nice. We waited about 10 minutes before it was our turn to be interviewed for the adoption. I filled out paperwork on our life, if we had other pets, etc...and she went over that as well as asking additional info. After that, she went over what procedures they had done (neutered and microchipped) and how to care at home. He had been given some vaccinations, neutered and was microchipped and it only cost us $60. I think that's a great deal. The whole process took about 45 minutes, so make sure to include that in your schedule when you go to pick up your new pet. After all the paperwork was filled out, they brought our new baby and they checked his microchip. We then put him in our carrier (always important to have a pet carrier!) and the staff congratulated us and rang a big bell for the new adoption. Unfortunately, I was very badly treated here as a volunteer. I saw frequent miscommunications about policies and procedures, general lack of responsiveness from staff, and a very high rate of staff and volunteer turnover. I tried to raise concerns as politely as possible, but nobody was interested in listening to me. If you want to adopt your pet from NHS, go for it, but I would have serious misgivings about telling anyone to work or volunteeer there. read more

Made an appointment to adopt a kitten and arrived at scheduled time. Was told we could only view the cat we requested online. Ok. Was lead to see the kitten. Right then I noticed the nasty attitude of the employee Gary. Because my friend had questions about another cat he lost it and was not only indignant but rude enough to tell us that if we did not take the kitten we would ruin his chances of being adopted. (Not true . Asked another employee) He said that he had worked here 20 years and no one had ever questioned his service before. My wife and I were amazed by the folks at Nevada Humane, especially Sydney. We have owned lots of cats over the last 15 years. Having finally moved into an apartment that allows cats, Lori and I were eager to find our latest companion. We went to find a cat on December 31st, the DAY after we moved in to our new apartment. (Can you say "eager?") The facility is huge and sparkling clean. We were greeted by Sydney who accepted our paperwork and told us to look at the cats up and down the halls. We split up to see more. I discovered a girl named Tak in her cage, in a group of male cats in their cages. She was a year and a month old. We both looked all around for at least a half-hour. Lori found a few that were possibles. She asked me if I had found a cat I liked. I said, "Tak." She said, "No, cat. Did you find a cat?" I brought her over to Tak's cage and said, Tak the cat." We flagged down a guy named Daniel and asked to meet Tak in an interview room. We sat there waiting to see her personality and demeanor. Daniel brought Tak in. Tak looked at us, came up and kissed Lori's hand, and promptly lay on her back as if to say, "See how cute I am?" We were sold! Sydney explained everything about her and checked our paperwork. A half-hour later, Tak was ours in a brand new cardboard cat carrier. With other cats we've had in the past, they'd spend the first night under the bed. Not Tak. She inspected the living room, bedroom, bath and took notice of the litter box and food dish and promptly sat on a chair as if to say, "Well, it looks like a nice place. And you folks seem nice. So we're a family." She immediately took to everything and to us. She is one of the nicest cats we have ever had. Wow.....what a "top notch operation" they are running there in Reno! My wife and I went in today at around 1 pm or so, and by 2:30 or 3:00 we were on the way home with a new, awesome puppy! The staff at the Nevada Humane Society really do keep that place in order! It is SO CLEAN there! They understand that people won't be so inclined to stop in for an adoption if the facilities are not in good order or smelly and such. I was really impressed by the attention to keeping the place so clean! The staff members really seem to care about both the animals under their charge, and the people that go there to adopt. Why I'm giving 4 stars is though I wish she didn't get sick the very next day I got her. But now she's been healthy and happy. Sabrina I got from my coworker Oct 2014 who adopted her from this place months prior, I believe her gum disease didn't show up until she was living with my coworker. $1000 later, she's healthy and happy and she is my kitty even though I wish my coworker would have fix her health issue before. If you are a rescue pet enthusiast, you are probably aware of how shockingly bad shelters can be. If this is your first time and you are researching (very good choice, I applaud you), some shelters can be down right horrifying. I visited the Nevada Humane Society shelter in Reno and I almost found tears of joy. I have NEVER seen such a place. The employees should be mentioned too. They were extremely welcoming. Back to the animals... I only visited the cats (future crazy cat lady). My sister and I walked in and before we knew it, we were guided to a room to play with kittens! Yes! If you need a kitty fix, this is your place. This shelter gives you the chance to see if you bond with the animal without someone breathing down your neck. The older cats were in open rooms and the happiest, healthiest and muched loved felines you could hope for. You wont have that urge to rush into a decision to "save" an animal from horrible cage time or euthanasia. There are always risks when you adopt (wrong fit for your family etc... ) but this shelter is a great way to go! read more

I am heartbroken. I adopted a dog from NHS 1.5 years ago, after a long search for my best friend. I was told she was an active 2yr old with a lot of energy who'd be great on runs, and she didn't like cats. That all sounded great, I don't like cats and a runny buddy was something I never knew I wanted! From the beginning, she was terrified. She shakes like a leaf when she's acknowledged, and she's 40lbs, so not a teeny little thing. She growls at me every day, and snarls at me most despite being the main walker, feeder, toy provider etc. As I told NHS, I have only known loving dogs, so stupidly I thought I should prove to her she's loved and safe by giving her hugs and kisses. After she split my lip that first week I smartened up and stayed out of her face. I also called NHS and received no guidance. Since then I've gotten another 2 bites that are open wounds with blood and too many nips to count. Not only is she not good with cats, but seems to want to harm every living thing she sees or hears. She has understandably frightened the neighbors and their children with how hard she tries to get at them. I've spent thousands of dollars on dog training videos, classes, calls with trainers, constant calls and emails with her vet, an array of medication, and nothing helped. I always felt we were one thing away from solving her fear, anxiety, anger, confusion, but her behaviorist broke the news to me that that is not the case. She has done work with NHS and other shelters, and was flabbergasted that my dog was adopted out. As harsh as it sounds, she said these are exactly the dogs she'd recommend be euthanized due to the crazy liability of not being able to fix a dog's aggression, just try to manage it. She said all other options have been exhausted and behavioral euthanasia is the safest option for everyone. I am devastated beyond words. I had no clue something like this could happen. I've gotten second and third opinions all saying the same, who have tried to comfort me by saying I did all I could, and there's only one way left to help my girl. I am grieving and hurting from this news. I'm disappointed in NHS for not giving her a proper evaluation, and for not giving me any guidance I so desperately sought in those scary times. I know the shelters are full and they are desperate to find every animal a home, but their decision to not eval or do a very poor eval on my dog could have resulted in catastrophic consequences for me, anyone in my community, and my dog herself. read more

I have adopted two healthy and happy kitties over the last year and overall had a wonderful experience. I felt like I was given adequate time to visit with the kittens and make decision. I felt confident that the information about the kittens history, medical conditions (one had a little kitty cold when I brought her home), and care that was needed was accurate and well informed. I have had the first cat for just over a year and he's doing great, and our little girl has almost been a year with us and she has come out of her shell so much! In addition, The shelter was clean and spacious. The only thing I didn't like about the shelter was I couldn't look at an animal without a volunteer hounding me. They post multiple times a day on social media but haven't returned any of mine or my friends nor family members calls for adoption or to answer any questions. More people need to know about the beautiful work these volunteers do to help these poor animals. Between the vets, handlers, and front desk advisors they have the biggest hearts out of anyone. We adopted our little guy who the staff called Barkley. His name is now Wilson and he is adjusting beautifully to our home. He loves having a big fur-brother! Wilson was neutered and had first round of vaccines while he was there and was also being treated for an ear infection. All of which was taken care of by the humane society. Unfortunately, and understandably with so many animals either being surrendered or found they prioritize their time to medical needs first. So things like bathing get overlooked. Wilson is so smelly from being a stray and then getting neutered he was not given a bath, which we understand, but just means that we all have to do our part to donate any way we can! One thing I have done to help is set my Amazon Smile profile to give a percentage of my purchase to the Nevada Humane Society. I purchase A LOT! If money is an issue but you still want to help old blankets, food that you no longer need, toys that you notice your pup doesn't play with anymore, etc, donate whatever you have! read more

This is a nice facility, with a caring and welcoming staff. A few days ago we went in for the first time and ended up adopting an older cat. We noticed quickly that it's a well-run location and you can tell that everyone there is looking out for the animals' best interest. They also do their best to help potential new pet guardians understand the history, temperament, and particular needs of any animal they may be interested in. A special mention of thanks to Jim in the cats section for his patience and kind help. He let us take our time getting to know our new friend and also gave us as much info as he could to help us make a decision. We never felt rushed or pressured on anything. After we decided to bring home our rescue, he even helped us with a few temporary supplies to tie us over for a few days. One other important thing to note, is that the shelter also provides support after the adoption process, with lots of information and even a help line, which helped us feel supported in taking on this new responsibility. They also understand that sometimes adoptions just don't work out so they make it simple to bring the animal back during a trial period if necessary. Bottom line is it's a well-managed shelter where they really want to find good homes for the animals. If you're thinking of maybe adopting a pet in need, please consider checking them out. On 12/22/2017 - the Friday before Xmas - you went home to your friends and family and ate too much and laughed too much and spent time with your family and friends and loved ones. While Trudy and I went home with a death sentence, uncertain about what I was supposed to do to help her or how to "monitor" her tumor growth because you wouldn't talk to me. I gave Nevada INHumane Society over a month to call and talk to me and no one - NO ONE - called to answer my questions or to tell me what to do now for my dog who had cancer, which was discovered WITHIN the first month that I had her, even though it took CONSIDERABLY longer than a month to get you to do anything about it. On 2/14/2017 - Valentine's day. You all were enjoying your flowers and cards and chocolates and stuffed animals and dinners out with your significant others - While Trudy stopped eating that day. My beautiful little beagle, who used to get up on her hind legs and literally DANCE FOR JOY every time I brought her food out just couldn't stomach her food any more. For the rest of the week I could only manage to get her to take a little bit of canned food out of my hands, and that was all. On 2/24/2017, She was still drinking water but had taken no food at all, not even out of my hand, for 3 days. After spending another $500 (on top of about that amount that I had already spent in the past 30 days so out of pocket expenses of about $1,000) it was found that the tumor in her abdomen (that you will NEVER convince me you didn't already know was there) had infiltrated her bladder and she had kidney damage. At 2:30, they gave her the sedative. By 2:45, her heart had stopped. I had her for barely 5 months. And in the end, there was nothing I could do but let her go. You hurt my dog. You refused her the proper care and checkups she should have had as soon as *I* discovered a lump on her side. I BEGGED you people to do a proper workup and checkup to find other tumors. If you had done the proper workup during her intake, you would have KNOWN that her teeth were too bad to put off fixing them in 6 months or a year - and she didn't even live for 6 months anyway. If you had done the proper workup, you'd have found her cancer and either cared for her as you promised or put her to sleep before she had to suffer, and before I had to suffer along with her. I hope you enjoyed your Xmas, while my dog was growing sicker and sicker and I spent the entire time I had her worrying about what was going to happen next, while I went through an entire month waiting for you people to tell me what I was supposed to do next after your vet REFUSED to talk to me, and walked right past me without a glance. Who cares. You get to chalk up another "successful" adoption, right? Who cares that she dies because you lied about providing necessary health care. I hope you enjoyed your Valentine's day sweets and dinners and cards and toys, while Trudy stopped being able to eat normally at all. I hope you choke on it every day from now to the end of time. If you are thinking of adopting a pet from these horrible people, be sure to read all the negative reviews, including the ones on the "not recommended" list, because every single one of those tales of heartbreak and malfeasance by the INHumane Society should be taken to heart. We trusted you. Her former owner trusted you. Trudy trusted you. I trusted you. It took me EIGHT YEARS to get over the death of my last dog. I don't expect to be getting over this any time soon either. Trudy, of course, is past getting over anything at all now. And she will never dance for joy again. Good speed, Trudy. Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. Now the dream dreams you, rather than the other way 'round. The staff at the Nevada Humane Society is AWESOME especially D.J. (I hope I have her name right) !!! Previous to adopting we had to put our 16 year old Aussie to sleep due to the fact that she had an inoperable tumor in her stomach. We still had a small dog that we had adopted 5 years ago from a shelter in Redding, California. That said, my husband and I decided to adopt a dog that was in need of a good home. We applied for a few dogs but we realized we were competing with many others. Since the advent of Covid-19 there are many individuals that are adopting animals right now. That seems to be a good thing. I hope so. We were extremely fortunate to finally get accepted to adopt the dog that we have now. She's only a year and a half old and had already had a litter of puppies and basically she's still a puppy herself. Poor baby. I have to say though that this dog is phenomenal!! Initially she was very shy and apprehensive but within a week her personality started to shine. She's extremely smart, loving and sweet. As soon as we sit down on the couch she cuddles beside us and falls asleep. She is getting much better walking on a leash. She loves her walks and she is already bonded to the dog we already had. They love playing together! Also it didn't take her long to follow our dog's lead and go to the bathroom outside. Her shelter name was Sugar Snap however my husband renamed her Lucy. My husband and I feel extremely lucky to have her as part of our family now. Many thanks to the Nevada Humane Society! The staff was very kind and thoughtful.
