I went here last night for the first time after reading reviews on here and hearing about this restaurant from some other sources. I have never tried Viatnamese cuisine before and was excited to dig in and give it a shot. For beverages, they offered many tradiational Viatnamese drinks, including coffee and sodas. I opted for a beer - though they did not have any Viatnamese brews on the menu. For an appetizer, I tried the grilled beef skewer, and it was fantastic. It was served with a spicy peanut dipping sauce which enhanced the flavor even more. I had been intent on ordering pho for my main course, so I went for it. I ordered the "Beef Stew" pho - big mistake for me. The broth, vegetables, and noodles were amazing - very tasty and spicy. However, I did not realize that the "stew" would consist of various beef parts like stomach and tendon. Not my favorite parts of the cow, unforunately. Despite my ordering mistake, I would highly recommend the pho here. The various other dishes ordered by our group smelled wonderful, and I tried some of the spicy beef with chii pepper and lemongrass ordered by another in our group - and it was great. I'm planning on giving New Centry a try again in the future - this time for one of the Vermicelli bowls mentioned by others here, as those looked great as well. read more

Don't come here expecting to be waited on every 5 minutes to see how your meal is; chances are it's gonna be great. Their new century egg rolls are pretty good but a bit on the pricey side. I got hooked on pho while living in a different state where it was basically on every corner. After moving back home to CNY, I went on a search for it. Everyone who eats pho told me the same place: New Century. The restaurant is in a plain looking house on the Northside of Syracuse. Only a couple parking spots in front, but plenty of street parking on side streets. Lots of space inside, including a huge bar that usually seems empty. Their menu has plenty of Vietnamese dishes to choose from. Their pho is exactly what you expect it to be: a big bowl of broth, noodles, and beef of all cuts. I prefer a richer, more flavorful broth, and New Century has the best in the area. All soups are served with the usual sides of bean sprouts, lime and basil, and every table has sides of hoison sauce and chili's to add, if you so choose. Their house egg rolls are amazingly delicious. They're not in usual egg roll wrappers, and I'm honestly not sure what it's made of, but they're a New Century house recipe. Always have to get a side. Everything is fairly priced and affordable. Staff is mostly friendly, but can seem unattentive at times. Bottom line, best place in CNY for pho. If you want it, this is the place to go! read more

I've been craving for Pho since I've moved back up here! I'm originally from Southern California and can get Vietnamese food right down the street and for cheap. We rarely come up to Syracuse because it's almost 2 hours away, but we had to drop off someone at the airport and was able to squeeze in time to grab dinner here. Their pho was DELICIOUS!! A little stingy on the bean sprouts, basil and lime. Ice Coffee with milk is really expensive here- $3.95! They didn't have the usual condiments on the table like hoisin sauce and sirachi. Down to business: Their phô. It's amazing. The broth - soooo full of flavor, I didn't even add the plum sauce or chile sauce. The meat and noodles were cooked perfectly. The sprouts, Thai basil and chiles, fresh. The New Century egg rolls, wrapped in a super crispy shredded-type shell, did not disappoint either. We ventured gently into the world of durian by trying the durian milk shake. Very interesting. Fruitier and sweeter than I imagined but, even in a shake, had that funky, funky smell at the end. The jury is still out on whether I'd get it again, but that's my taste, not the restaurant's issue. After splitting our appetizer and each getting a (huge bowl of) phô, we took home leftovers from both phôs. Mind you, this is my bottomless pit of a college student son and me (I eat like a normal human lol). Servings are large!!! The only thing that I think could be improved upon would be the lack of checking up on us at all during the meal. For appetizers we ordered the Vietnamese rolls and the new century rolls and they were the best I've ever had, and the sauce it came along with was delicious. Unless you are Vietnamese, the best pho you can get in ***Syracuse*** is probably at New Century. This is my go-to Pho spot for the past 4 years. The pho and most other Vietnamese dishes are authentic. The broth for the pho is flavorful, to an extent that you might consider hydrating yourself with a bottle of water within the hour. The vermicelli is also cooked just right and I know a lot of people don't appreciate the texture of the noodle, which should be a bit past al dente, unlike pasta. The meat in the pho always looked pink and rare when it's served. You don't want the meat to be cooked already because you are supposed to mix the meat in the pho to cook it! Of note, don't put/eat that yellow/orange pepper in the side dish that comes with the pho, unless you want your mouth along with the rest of your intestine to burn for the next 30 minutes. The atmosphere is great with friendly staff, and the price is reasonable. The parking is doable since they have a larger space in the back. If Vietnamese natives would come to eat at this restaurant, you should too. read more

I'm taking off a star for consistency: Over my last 3 years in Syracuse, we've been here numerous times. As I stated in my review back in 2014, I deemed it my "go to pho place" - but then over time I started noticing a decline in quality. When Vietnamese Noodle House opened up in North Syracuse, I even preferred going there and it was double the drive. We gave New Century more tries though, and it seemed like everything was back where it used to be. However, we went last night and it was the worst pho we've had in a while. I don't know if it's because the restaurant was extremely busy, but the soup definitely tasted off, almost like it was rushed so the flavors didn't have enough time to develop or the noodles had given it a strange paper like flavor. The noodles were not cooked all the way through either. The grilled pork chop plate we had, as someone mentioned in earlier reviews, was too well done. They give you a little bowl of soup with it, and this broth tasted how the pho should have, in my opinion. Their fish sauce for the plate is also very spicy so I didn't pour it all over my plate like I normally would have. Overall, I still like this restaurant, but I don't know what's up with their food. Is it change of management? How busy the restaurant is? New chefs? It's hard to feel comfortable coming here and spending money when you're not sure how the food is going to be, or to recommend this restaurant for that matter as well. read more

Awul service. My group had to wait quite some time to get water and then some more time to actually get our orders taken. Usually, I'm quite reasonable with these things since there might be confusion or there is a lot going on for the server at the moment. However, that could not be the case since there weren't even that many people in the restaurant at the time or they had been served already. The first restaurants we stopped at were all closed; after calling a few more places, New Century said they were open and had room. The inside is roomy, the vermicelli is good, and the pho is better. I especially enjoyed the number 10 - I'm from D.C. and the broth honestly rivals anything I've ever tried in the city. In addition, they have a few parking spots in the front which is always better than pay per hour. We enjoyed all of the food we got, and were extremely full for $10 per person. But he said that the kitchen was closing and that we would be the last orders. He then proceeded to take orders for two other groups that came in after we ordered. We tried New Century and were delightfully surprised! The restaurant was bigger inside than it appeared from the outside. The spring rolls were delicious and I tried Bun Dac Biet for the first time. The pork meatballs were very good, as well as the eggroll on top of the vermicelli noodles with peanuts, beansprouts, and other veggies. When i pulled up to New Century, I was slightly afraid to get out of the car. There was only this one sign with its name and extremely poor lighting and no windows. Its location is a bit tucked away and surrounded by residential. When I proceeded to walk through the entrance it felt like i was walking into a home. This place is only vietnamese place I've in Syracuse. Being Vietnamese I've tried a lot of authentic dishes. I've tried the Bun Bo Hue here and it didn't excite at all. The flavor of the broth was almost bland with a hint of beef broth. However the Pho wasn't bad. It is not as authentic as I would like but it isn't bad. I would come back here and get the Pho again. Authentic, satisfying food, but disappointing service. After hearing about a decent Vietnamese establishment in Syracuse serving pho, I was interested in learning more. My family and I ended up visiting here on a chilly Sunday for lunch after some persuasion from me. The place is tucked in a quite neighborhood on a corner lot. It seems like it was a refurbished house with many walls knocked down to create one giant dining area. I was a little hesitant at first, the interior seemed a bit rundown and dirty, but this did not sway us. We were seated at one of their giant table and left to peruse the menu. It took quite some time for the server to just come take our drink order. By the time he came, we had already decided what we wanted for our meals; not a good sign considering we had our indecisive mother with us. We all decided on splitting the New Century Egg Rolls for $5.95. We were given a total of 5 smallish pieces. This crispy egg roll consisted of a shrimp and pork mixture stuffed inside a fried noodle exterior. While I wasn't crazy about the sauce it was served with (it seemed a little too fishy or something) the roll itself was bursting with flavor; it didn't even need the sauce. Between the quality and freshness of the ingredients, I thought it was a solid dish. All of us ended up ordering a giant bowl of pho for $8.95. I decided on the rare beef, brisket, and tendon (#13) pho. I was quite surprised to find I utterly enjoyed my steaming bowl of spicey goodness. This was only my second time trying pho and I was turned off from it the first time thinking it always was drowned in coriander. This was a perfect blend of flavors: enough to know they were there but not consuming the entire dish. They served it with the traditional basil, bean sprouts, lime and habanero (last time I had jalapeno), which enhanced the flavor even further. I was surprised how effectively the steeping process of these ingredients were. With just 3 small pieces of habanero, my mouth was on fire. I liked adding a little hoisin to the noodles as I ate them since they didn't soak in as much flavor from the broth as I expected. While there wasn't a significant amount of meat in the bowl, I thought that the serving size was quite generous. I had about half the bowl left of broth. I hear this is a traditional amount but, for $9, how can you go wrong? The meat was okay to me. I probably wouldn't get the tendon again; it was super chewy and fat-like. The other meats were very tender but didn't add a significant amount of flavor for me (it was probably already steeped out in the soup). The broth was my favorite part. I look forward to adding my own noodles for a future meal. The service was quite sparse and not very welcoming to outsiders. Some of us ran out of water and never did they come over once for a refill. They only arrived to drop off food and hurriedly ran off to help other tables. Not even a "how is everything going?" during the meal. It was probably obvious to them that most of us weren't very knowledgeable of Vietnamese food, but that doesn't call for them completely disregarding us. I could definitely see improvement here. Overall, I was quite impressed with their food. The atmosphere and service wasn't the best but it was good enough where I would come back here, probably for take-out. I came here on a whim with a friend, after I had been craving some Vietnamese food for the longest time. When we arrived, the front parking was pretty full, which was certainly a good sign beyond the reviews. We were seated quickly, though the seating area is quite large anyway, and waited on promptly afterward for drinks. My friend ordered the Vietnamese coffee, while I ordered hot tea and water. After giving us adequate time to look over the menu, they came back with our drinks and to take our orders. We got the Spring Rolls and the special Egg Rolls for appetizers, while he ordered a Salmon dish and I ordered the Chicken in Chili Peppers and Lemongrass (#54 or #56). The appetizers arrived first, and they did not disappoint. The Spring Rolls were fresh and had a delicious peanut sauce, but the Egg Rolls were more of a favorite with their crunchiness and the sauce that complimented the dish. When the entrees arrived, I was pretty excited, and my dish was very large. My friend's dish, however, seemed quite small in comparison, which was slightly disappointing for him. One critique is that they should have similar serving sizes for their entrees. However, it worked out that he had eaten a large lunch earlier. I did not taste his meal, but he was raving about it and finished every last bite (5 bites of salmon, but mixed with the plethora of rice, and it was a bigger meal than it looked....just more rice to meat). My dish was amazing!!! The only downside was that it was listed as being "hot," which I tend to enjoy and have a good tolerance for. However, it wasn't even mildly spicy for my taste. Fortunately, they do have a container of chili pepper at the tables, and I used a substantial amount. Enough for the neighboring tables to laugh and take notice, so maybe the dish was spicy and I just couldn't tell? I finished the entire dish, and found that the flavors were quite delicious. It was a tangy flavor, and when mixed with the Lemongrass and rice, it was a knockout. I did take some of the sauce from the Egg Rolls and used that, which was quite good too. For a Vietnamese Restaurant, and in Syracuse, I was very pleasantly surprised, which was a plus for someone who is not only a foodie, but who has been to Vietnam a few times. While visiting a friend in upstate NY I found out the closest VN restaurant is in Kingston! Even though it's closer, once you factor in the wait and crossing on the ferry, it took close to an hour. So this time I looked elsewhere and Yelp helped me found New Century. So worth the hour drive! Outside of VN, there has only been one other place (a small hole-in-the-wall in Lyon, France) that had me instantly transported back in time with the first bite! It was like I was back in VN, eating a bowl of pho for breakfast at the local corner where the street vendors congregate. It wasn't anything special or exotic, this bowl of pho, it was just simply comforting and filling, and of course, good. I won't use delicious because pho, or any food, from the local street vendors are never described as delicious. Because anything not "made at home from scratch" could never be "delicious," it's just good. My mom & "ba ngoai" would be offended if I ever uttered such "ridiculousness." But take it from me, any place being compared as "as good as the street vendors in [city], VN" is GOOD! The egg rolls are decent, filled mostly with taro, but surprisingly, the "New Century rolls," or house special, are what egg rolls actually are, filling wise. It has shrimp & minced pork filling, along with carrots, taro, and clear rice noodles (some mushroom or "nam meo" too I think). But what's different is that it's rolled in "banh hoi" or a little patty of rice noodles/vermicelli instead of the regular rice wrappers, then fried. Even though many raved about the New Century rolls, I wasn't impressed. Now if they did a combination where it's the regular egg rolls with the special's filling then we're talking. That's how egg rolls are done in my family. The pho came out in a relatively big size. It's actually small if you compare to big cities, but compared to upstate NY and Kingston, it's bigger. It will still fill you up so no worries. The broth smelt heavenly and tasted like home. Literally, home. I'm sure my "ba ngoai" is shaking her fist at me in VN right now O_o. Noodles were well prepared, didn't clump together like it's been sitting awhile, and the rare steak cooked perfectly in the hot broth. No hoison sauce needed. I'm a big advocate of trying things first before adding anything, well except for some lime & hot sauce lol. The broth was very well seasoned, all the spices have melded together smoothly so you don't get just the punch of one spice (usually star anise) that overpowers the others. Add in some fresh basil for another beautiful note and I was good to go. We also tried the broken rice with BBQ pork chops. The fish sauce was very good, not completely watered down like some places to accommodate western palette, but rather just enough so you're not requesting a second serving just to finish your rice dish. Hint of lime, more than a hint of pepper, and pickled strips of carrots made a great dipping sauce for the egg rolls also. Now here is the only not so positive note about New Century: the BBQ pork chops were slightly sweet. I'm pretty sure the menu listed it as BBQ in English so I guess I can't fault them, but traditionally they're supposed to be simply grilled so no sweetness at all. Im one of those who does not mixed [sugar] sweet in with my food, which is considered "salty" in Vietnamese. So that was a bit strange to taste after the pho. And I feel like it could have used a bit more lemongrass in the seasoning/marinade before grilling. I love that it wasn't Americanized but so well done (and true to its roots) that I still saw many people coming by to pick up take-out orders. The restaurant wasn't crowded though there was a steady supply of people coming in as others left. We stayed awhile and enjoyed our food and pondered our next move since we had no other plans except to make that hour drive back. Atmosphere & decoration are almost non-existent but it's clean and well-kept. That's another plus for me because it's another resemblance to places in VN: no frills just good food. The bathroom is old and worn, but very clean. Not even an errant sheet of TP or crumpled paper towel on the floor. I counted four, FOUR! Dyson vacuums in the place. My review on the wait staff is mixed. There are a couple who speak English well and was very good with taking our orders and refilling our water. There was a couple who didn't speak much English and one of them even forgot our additional order of the New Century rolls (we figured might as well while we're here). And I even ordered in Vietnamese once I realized he didn't understand me. Overall a place I wholeheartedly recommend. I even called to order take-out on my trip back: bun bo Hue. I can't really give a true review on that dish because it sat in the car for over an hour and some more in the fridge so it wasn't at its best when eaten. But the broth was very well seasoned and had a kick to it which I loved. Will update once I try it freshly made. read more

New century is - hands down - my favorite restaurant in Syracuse. Not fancy but always clean... cheerful, efficient service.... great food... and the best cafe sua da (iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk) that I've ever had anywhere. I happen to love Vietnamese food and everything from the pho to the vermicelli dishes.... the house special crunchy fried shrimp rolls... goi ga (Viet style chicken salad)... is all excellent. Prices are moderate and in my opinion - being an ardent fan of Vietnamese food and having tried it in NY, NJ, Philly, DC, Seattle and San Francisco... this is some of the best in the US. Admittedly, I have not tried any Vietnamese restaurants in Orange County CA but I think New Century would compare favorably even to places in that market. read more

Sketch neighborhood but we've never had any incidents here. We always stop by when driving through. The pho is bomb and so are their special spring rolls (made with a noodle soup, I think), #9. Their grilled chicken is crazy tasty but also very salty so we always get a white rice to go (or just take half and make our own rice). Who knew the hood in the middle of Nowhere, NY would have such delicious Viet? Oh also, they recently renovated so it looks much nicer inside. read more
