Finally tried the only Chinese restaurant in town tonight and oh man, it is soooo good!! The crab rangoons were to die for and they were huge. The combination fried rice was perfect and had vegetables and mushrooms that I've never had in fried rice before - perfection. The egg rolls weren't my favorite, they're different from what I'm used to but that's okay. I think maybe they needed more cabbage inside but that's okay, they were still good. My waitress was attentive and the food came out so quickly, fresh and hot! I loved that I could sit by the window and see the water while I ate. The serving portions were huge and I had to take leftovers home. Definitely recommend! read more

This food ranged between barely palatable and passably okay. The cashew chicken was all right, nothing special and I didn't see many cashews in there. The general tsao was really not good. The soggy breading fell off and there were tiny pieces of chicken in there with dried edges. The sauce was so way off base, how are they calling this general chicken? The rice was on the dry side and really had no flavor at all, so it was a waste of space. The only thing really good was the pleasant disposition of the lady at the register and the fortune cookies. New China in Ashland is one of the only spots in the area to get Chinese food. I like the old-school casual vibe of the place. It's also right on Lake Superior. The kung pao tofu ($12) was teensily sweet with clearly from-frozen peas and carrots, but was acceptable, all things considered. We thought the vegetable lo mein ($11) was also perfectly fine. Everything was salty. I liked the spice of the singapore noodles but the saltiness made it hard to finish the dish. The kung pao chicken was fine. I found it funny how the house soup served with the specials had more crackers than soup though. Would not recommend the wonton soup though. When I travel, I tend to select restaurants that offer carry-out, that way I can dine in peace in my own room, not to mention, I can graze all evening if I like. (I eat slowly.) Chinese restaurants tend to be the best at carry-out (not always but usually) so I opted for New China based on Yelp reviews. I ordered mushroom egg foo young. My order came up quickly, before I could finish a post on fakebook. When I ordered, I asked for utensils since they are sometimes overlooked. Back in my room, I opened the bag and was pleasantly surprised to find a plate, dinnerware, napkin, soy sauce (which really wasn't needed, the dish was flavorful on its own) and a fortune cookie along with a container of rice and another with my entre. Who could ask for anything more? My egg foo young was well textured and came with a flavorful, thick gravy that a spoon would stand up in. The rice was good, starchy, oriental, stick-to-your-ribs and stick to everything else rice, just the way I like it. My fortune was a bit of strange philosophy but maybe I'll use my lucky numbers for a lottery ticket tonight. Yes, I would patronize New China again. read more

We were craving Chinese on a road trip so we decided to try out New China restaurant. There was no wait when we went and we were seated promptly. The waitress was very friendly. The food was good as always, but the waitress we had was very rube when we walked in. The bill was split down the middle between my party and when we went to pay it was really high for what we ordered, when we asked why she said its because she had already charged 20% to each bill. She wasnt going to tell us if we didnt ask. When we questioned her she got very rude so my boyfriend said hed just pay for both tickets and it was $180 and he gave her a $200. I was in town for a family emergency one week and then a funeral a week later. Eating here both weeks I and had a different experience each time. The first trip I ordered the subgum wonton in the middle of the day and it arrived quite good. A week later I ordered the same thing in the evening and it was like a completely different dish. It arrived heavily mixed with soy sauce and had a completely different base flavor. It was clear that there were two different cooks on different shifts making things differently. Not nearly as good in the evening. I also was a bit disappointed with the house soup as it is more of a crunchy noodle dish with very little liquid for a soup. Visiting the area from Michigan and I stopped in here for dinner. Place is nice inside and the staff was friendly. My husband and I went on a couple day road trip North. We had heard from a waitress in upper Michigan that if we go over to Ashland to eat at this Chinese restaurant. She stated it was to die for. Later that night in Ashland we met some bikers in a bar that highly recommended it again. We knew we had yo try it we were not disappointed This has to be one of the best Chinese restaurant we have ever ate at. We were the only two on the patio yet the service was on top of everything. Our waiter checked on us often but not too much. Our appetizer came out fast and fresh. The food was amazing. Food was served in beautiful metal bowls with lids. When I opened mine I gasped. The waiter asked what's wrong and I stated that there was enough food for a family. He laughed and said the portions are large there. I've been to a lot of places and I realized this was absolutely the best when I finally ate in Chinatown this last year. I travel for work and had Chinese all over America trust me nothing comes close. Food is amazing, always freshly made with great portions and the service is five star really it's that good. Who would think to travel to Ashland, WI to have the best Chinese food of your life? I wouldn't have. My 15 year old son said "If I had to choose a place to live based on Chinese food, it would be here." I've had Chinese food in Seattle's Chinatown, in Hawaii, Chicago, and many other places. I have eaten at New China many times, mostly as part of a regular lunchtime gathering of friends and coworkers. The service has always been very good and I really like the food. The portions are huge (I always get two meals out of whatever I order), reasonably priced and the menu is pretty expansive. I realize there are some who live in large metropolitan areas who will scoff at the authenticity of a Chinese restaurant in northern Wisconsin and they are certainly entitled to their opinion. I admit I do not have a lot to compare this to as my Chinese food experiences have been limited to restaurants located in the rural Midwest, but I would recommend New China to all of my friends and to guests visiting our area. read more

You know, when I get away from larger cities, I don't really have high expectations for things like Chinese restaurants. I just don't really think to myself "You know where I bet I can get some decent Chinese food? Northern Wisconsin!" It just makes no sense. But then I go and have dinner at New China Restaurant and am pleasantly surprised. Scanning the menu, there are a lot of delicious sounding offerings, including the go to standards of Chinese restaurants like General Tso's and various fried rice dishes. There is a good variety of options so anyone should be able to find something to eat. I opted for the Singapore Noodles. My dish was served with a cup of the house soup which is a sort of scallion type of broth with wontons on top that was pretty good. A nice little starter and far superior to some places where they bring you egg drop soup which should not be a thing that exists. Then came my dish. It was served in a sort of fancy metal dish which was sort of a nice touch. Then I lift the lid to discover that I have just been delivered a meal that could feed a family of 5 (slight hyperbole). Seriously, I heaped a large plate full and it looked like I barely made a dent in the overall pile I was given. Considering my dish was only like $9, this was a big win in the ratio of cost to quantity. Singapore Noodles was a noodle dish (dur!) of cellophane noodles, various meats some water chesnuts and such and a nice bit of spice. It was really quite good. If I was local I could definitely see myself making this a usual dish for me. On top of that, I ate myself full and still managed to leave with a container and a half of leftovers. The service was fast and friendly, the restaurant clean, comfortable and inviting. All in all, this isn't "good Chinese for a small town", it's just good Chinese food, period. read more

I would agree with Patrick about ignoring previous reviews. I had visited this restaurant in the past and it was nothing to write home about, but I just revisited yesterday and was blown away. The decor was totally redone and is absolutely beautiful, it felt classy yet comfortable and way more spacious than before. Our server was so attentive, friendly, and efficient. At one point I spilled some water and within 10 seconds she was over with extra napkins, I never even had to ask! The food was absolutely incredible. I had the vegetable lo mein and it was comparable to any of the best Chinese restaurants I've visited. I do think that this restaurant had their problems in the past, but they've really upped their game and serve incredible food in a great atmosphere with impeccable service. we called for carry out and ordered 2 general tsos with chicken fried rice and 2 egg rolls. ordered blindly while driving and didn't think it would cost more than $26-30. we get there for pick up and it's $60! just to get all the way home and have no utensils or fortune cookies. This was my first Chinese restaurant ever.. At first I though the place was pretty good. We didn't really eat here all that often, but for the most part, I thought it was good. After moving, and being able to try many, many Asian style restaurants, I now take back that statement. I've had a lot of great Chinese food, and this restaurant, is just OK now. At the time, I enjoyed, they have a pretty big menu with traditional menu items with some American items, like cheeseburgers and french fries. Love the new decor at New China. I feel so relaxed in this setting even if the place is packed, which it often is. Whether you are looking at the Lake or in a booth next to the etched glass, the view is nice. I had the sec Huan beef and it was just enough spice without being overpowering. I went in for late lunch on jan. 4th 2018. Everything was excellent. The food was very good and full of flavor. I ordered the Singapore noodles and they were top notch. My girlfriend ordered lo mein with no meat (an item not on the menu) and they brought it to the table and it was great too. Also the portion sizes are generous and everything was good value. The interior of the restaurant is great and it's way above the standard for Ashland Wisconsin. Our waitress was very professional and nice. The few chinese dishes I've had at this restaurant have been well seasoned and pretty tasty. I would have given it 4 stars where it not for the service. I'm not sure if it's the owner or who, but the staff looks at you like they're doing you a favor by serving you. I've been going to this place for 5 years, and I have yet to see the lady crack a smile. It doesn't feel inviting so I usually order take-out. If they didn't make my favorite dish rather well, I probably wouldn't eat there at all. As it is, I limit my patronage to once every couple of months or less. I'd like to go where people are happy to see me and there are many restaurants in the area that fulfill that requirement. read more
