Been a customer for years. Excellent food, service is quite fast. Never ate there but have many takeout and delivery orders. They tend to be spicier than not. but only on the spicey dishes. I ordered the sesame chicken, and it was basically all breading with barely any chicken inside--completely unsatisfying. To make it worse, it didn't even come with the broccoli it usually does. New China is a solid, American Chinese comfort food joint. I've ordered twice from here, and each time the food has been pretty good. Nothing spectacular, but nothing terrible, either. So why three stars instead of four? The lunch specials come with rice already in the same bowl as the main dish. Kind of a weird combo with lo mein, but better to know for the future. Came here this time for 2 lunch specials ($8.95 each). The lunch special includes pork fried rice or white rice, a can of soda, and your choice of over 25 meals. I chose shrimp and Chinese vegetables, and also got an order of Szechuan Beef. Phoned it in and my order was ready in 10 minutes. There is plenty of parking available. It has become my go-to Chinese take out spot. So far I have tried: -Egg rolls (yes! Just like NY) -Shrimp and broccoli combination platter - comes with pork fried rice and an egg roll. I sub garlic sauce (spicier and a tad lighter) instead of the regular brown sauce. There are only 5 shrimp included but for $12, you can't beat it. -Wonton Soup - good flavor. Doesn't include the shreds of pork that they do most places in NY, but good overall. I always add crispy noodles and a yellow mustard pack for some crunch and spice. -Crab Rangoons- these were good but are also easier to come across locally. 8 in a bag. Light on filling. I felt it was overpowered by too many baby corns and bamboo shoots and so many green peppers. I'd use 1/3 of each a little more chicken and sauce. I was very disappointed. I tried the same dish down the street on 49th, and new china can not compare. My husband had Kung Pao chicken which was good. My favorite was the won ton soup which was very good (: I would return, just for the soup. The egg rolls and rice was meh. Rice was definitely dry. Again the Spring Gardens was much better. They made it to order with my white sauce and substituted chicken fried rice instead of pork fried rice. Portion was lunch special sized (for me it was big enough for two and a half small meals) and were packed together in the same container. The wonton soup was delicious and had lots of wontons. Drove into town on Christmas Day, failing to consider the limited options for dining due to the holiday. After an hour where my fiancé likely thought I was about to transform into the Hangry Hulk, we found this place. Having grown up with New York Chinese food, this place absolutely hit the spot. The menu is exactly like New York Chinese restaurants, as was the inside of the restaurant. (Big ups to the pictures above the counter!) Having lived in New Orleans for the last decade, good Chinese food is something I attributed to just New York, much like pizza. I could not be happier to be proven wrong. The woman who took our order was incredibly friendly and chatted with us for a bit. Before we knew it, the food was at our table. General tso's chicken was great, as was the pork fried rice. Krab rangoon did the job. The egg rolls were perhaps the least impressive of all that we ate, but still decent (and better than 95% of the ones in New Orleans). Seriously, this place saved my Christmas, and possibly my engagement haha. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor. You won't be disappointed. read more
