I haven't read a comic book in probably 15 years. But when I saw an image of Daredevil #1 (image attached) I thought I'd change that. After all, once a week, I'm at the public library close to this shop, so why not give it a shot? The exterior is really not much to look at. But under the heading of "don't judge a comic book by its cover" (see what I did there?), I ventured forth. In my youth, this would have been an absolute mecca for me. I would have *begged* a parent to take me here and blown the entirety of whatever allowance I had while here. Their selection is fantastic. I intended to buy DD #1 and walk out, but I left with far more because of their incredible selection and my weak willpower. I almost have to laugh when I step into this place. I recently have got back into comics somewhat, buying a few trade paperbacks here and there. Walking into this store for the first time in over a decade transported me back into my teenage self. The store hasn't changed. I mean, literally, down to the lay out, weird smell, and the absurdly high checkout counter manned by the woman with coke bottle glasses. Since I last collected comics, their value has depreciated while the volume has skyrocketed. This is no more apparent when scanning the $1 back issues and seeing almost every comic I used to own. It's actually more enjoyable now, reading strictly for enjoyment, rather than stressing out about obtaining a particular valuable #1 variant cover. I sympathize with one of the reviewers in regards to selling his collection. I had a similar sized collection with signed issues and was offered $100 flat (by a different comic store) stating they "don't buy individuals". I just took it as I just wanted to dump my collection and be a grown up. I accepted the reality comics are pretty much worthless and are meant to be enjoyed, not stored for profit. It's good to see this nostalgic place is still going, even if the woman behind the counter said the comic my girlfriend picked up was for "breast cancer treatment week." -_____- read more

The Quincy store was a common weekend destination for me growing up, and now that I've moved back to the area, it's assuring to find out that the younger me had good taste! Quincy maintains one of the larger setups in the NEC chain, and is well organized for its current and back issue sections. While it doesn't maintain the largest collection of unsorted back issues (expect about 10-12 long boxes) in the chain, there is a reasonable amount of sorted ones featuring comic runs from the late 80's and up - most comfortably in the $2-5 range. Where the Quincy store really shines is its diverse and well-maintained collection of Gold and Silver age books, featuring an entire room filled with nothing but older issues dating back to the 40's. Everything's well sorted, from the higher-priced issues lining the walls, to the lesser books within the center cabinets (which you can thumb through on your own, but will need an employee to pull anything out); they even cut down on average search time by having a Marvel side and a DC side. Any inside damage to the rarer books (ie, missing centerfold) is clearly noted as well, along with a significant price reduction, which is appreciative. If you're looking for older comics, this is the place to be, and if you're just starting out, it's a great place to get current books and take in some comics history! read more

Not at all a fan. Alright. The location's good, they seem to have a wide selection of comics, and they've got a small selection of RPGs and CCGs. So stipulated. My beef is when I came to sell the bulk of my comics collection, over eight hundred issues dating from the Sixties into the Nineties, all in near-mint condition or better, and the crowning one of which was a copy of X-Men #94 *signed by Chris Claremont.* It'd been appraised by the manager of another NEC location at over a thousand dollars (not including #94, which is worth several hundred dollars by itself WITHOUT an author signature), and he recommended the Quincy location for a sale as being nearer to me. Beyond that, he was kind enough to set up the appointment with the manager in Quincy. That fellow offered $53 for the collection, and stuck by the assertion even after the other manager's appraisal was mentioned. Now given that the cheapest this location sold used comics for at the time was $3.00, getting six cents an issue was beyond absurd, it was gratuitously insulting. (I wound up getting $570 for a PART of the collection from a different buyer.) So ... the way I figure, if the manager was comfortable with cheating one customer -- and not just a guy off the street, but in a meeting set up by another NEC manager -- what other chicanery is going on here? Were I still in the practice of buying comics, I wouldn't take that chance, not with so many other options in the Boston area: Million Year Picnic, Newbury Comics, take your pick. read more

Found myself in Quincy on a Saturday afternoon and when I drove by this place I knew I needed to pop in. A good comic store is hard to find these days so I always want to support one when I see one instead of pumping more money into Amazon. To clarify, I'm not a seasoned comic book reader (though I had my brush with JTHM and Lenore in high school), but rather I'm surrounded by avid comic collectors and my boyfriend is a gamer nerd. So, while I can't tell you what this place's back catalog looks like and the breadth of their action figure selection (which did look extensive to my eyes), what I can tell you is that they have a big variety of items and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly to a newb like myself. I do like graphic novels and their selection was superb. Also, my boyfriend has convinced me to give in and play some Magic the Gathering with him, so I bought some cards and will soon endure the torture or joy of what that experience will entail. Based on the sheer variety of items and the fact that the staff was above and beyond what I'd expect, I will definitely make the drive back here for all my geek gift giving needs! read more

the ones that work there are friendly, but.. . ya gotta start talking to them first. the three i see always are very helpful. they go out of their way ,typing,searching around other stores to find that one lil item i am looking for. i end up leaving with more than i thought i would get. and on the way home, i kick my ass because what i spent.but i get home, open the store bag . and ahhhhhhh!!! so glad that money turned into great comics. luv free comic book day too. . thank you !!!! read more

Been going here since I was a kid, and I must say, it's a pretty damn good comic store - clean, well-lighted, and personable. While New England Comics isn't particularly hip or special compared to other shops in the Greater Boston Area, the people who work there are great and you can pretty much get your fill of geekery. And if they don't have that particular collectible or book you're looking for, they can just grab it from one of their locations or easily set up an special order. And plus, you have to have a certain respect for the birthplace of the Tick. read more

I am pretty sure this is the NEComics that had a booth at SDCC this year. If this is the one, I wanted to say I had a fantastic experience with them and I believe that they truly care about their customers. At comic con this year, there was a limited edition Jim Lee Blueline Sketch Batman figure release. A small number of those figures came with a hand drawn sketch from Jim Lee. Rather than post the toys at flipper prices on eBay (which many comic book stores did), and charge 3 or 4 times the suggested retail price, this wonderful shop chose to sell their Batman with hand drawn sketch at a decent price. This meant they got some money (not tons) but more important, comic book fans had an opportunity to get a piece of art without having to empty their wallets/savings accounts to get it. I came by with my daughter earlier today and had a great time. The staff was very helpful with recommendations and were very knowledgeable. While my daughter was pretty self sufficient finding Adventure Time and Supergirl the staff behind the counter helped me find some items from my youth as well as make recommendations that I was glad to accept. I am hard pressed to leave even 1 star after how I was just treated in the Quincy Store. For literal decades I have shopped at NEC and over the last few years ive spent an average of a few hundred dollars a month without batting an eye at mostly their Quincy Store. Today when I arrived I began to remove my bag i was also promoted to remove my sweatshirt... no thanks I said and went to the bins after putting my bag behind counter as I usually do. I'm 40 years old shop there a few times a week and am overdressed for a comic shop, not a theif looking type. However I was also told I could not enter the gold room as he was the only one working and someone could steal , either me in the room where I'm on camera with expensive books or some one could walk in and steal while he was watching me. Ok. So there goes spending any significant amount of money or getting what i came for. But i noticed a buy 2 of anything get the 3rd free sign. So I took an hour and carefully selected items not already discounted so that I could enjoy the sale and still leave with comics. I'm always treated good here so I just brushed this off til I got to the register. Since I am a rewards member and already receive discounts none of my purchases were eligible for the sale according to this clerk who then laughed at me and began to mock me for thinking I'd get double discounts. He made fun of me in front of other customers! I started to question why and that this is not how I've ever been treated and He told me he wasn't even supposed to be at that store today and that he was in charge. All I was trying to do was give them money for their product and enjoy a sale on comics. I left without making a purchase. I used to spend hundreds every month in this very store for years. It's hard to even think about going back to this or even another location. I recommend buying online for back issues and Newbury comics for new stuff and sales. My decades of shopping at NEC may have just ended today. I will certainly be sharing this now in the multiple collection communities I'm a part of online and generally sharing this experience with everyone who casually mentions comics or superheros to me in the coming weeks. read more

By far the best comic book shop in the area! They have a ton of space and the staff is extremely helpful! Every time I go in there I find something new that I like. Sometimes if I can't find something I have gone to other stores thinking they might have it BUT NEC always comes out on top! I've been going to New England comics since I was a kid, and when I don't want to go out of my way to grab some light graphic reading, this is the place to go. For the hardcore collectors, they have an exhaustive collection of old Marvel and DC comics in the back. Some of these are worth hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars. The only fault I have with this place is that the selection actually isn't as good as Harrison's in Salem. For instance, I've gotten into a series called Grimm's Fairy Tales (better than it sounds!) and they seem to have stopped carrying issues as well as other Zenescope comics. Disappointing. But if you like mainstream comics from Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, Top Cow, and so on, you really can't go wrong by paying a visit to NEC. read more
