I came in for lunch and was immediately seated by the host. They put me in the dining room where there were only two other tables. Several waitresses in that room looked at me several times, but just purposely ignored me and never came to get my order - never even acknowledged my existence. My husband and I decided to have the Chicken Fried Steak that was with a homemade, rich country gravy. He had his with mashed potatoes, and I had mine with French fries. The fried steak was a generous portion which was too large for me - I took half home to enjoy for lunch the next day. Three stars because this is the tale of two experiences. 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times"....... First off, the staff is friendly and courteous, no issues there. Secondly, my fiancée and I go there every Sunday morning, usually getting French toast, pancakes or an omelette. The breakfast is stellar. 99.9% of the time. Then today.....decided to get a late lunch there, and we were both hungry; I ordered shrimp Parmesan, my fiancée ordered the sampler for us both. Man, it wasn't just borderline tasteless, nearly everything had an odd taste, like an after taste. Though maybe the oil was old in the dryer, but my pasta was awful tasting; thought maybe the sauce, but the potato skins had a weird gumminess and aftertaste that was just off. Either one of us wanted to complain as we frequent the restaurant in the AM and maybe thought it was an off day, but both meals? The price is wrong it's $2..99 with one refill not $2.59, both times it 's filled with ice. The size of tumbler is 12 ounces, with ice you might get 4 or 5 ounces in each. After that it's 2.99 again, you might get 20 ounces total in 4 tumbler servings for 6.98. Resturante cost is not even fifty cents a tumbler (syrup cost). After spending close to $100, the soda was 20% of bill, was 7 times 2.99=20.93, 7 time if 5 ounces = 35 ounces, 2 liter (68 ounces) bottle cost $.99 cents. Kid size is the same price, separate from the kids meal ( 3 chicken tenders, 1 side and soda 10.99). So if you get soda get it with out ice. this way you'll get 20 to 24 ounces for 2.99, not 35 ounces for $20.93! After not able to explain or explanation: "I'LL GO SOMEPLACE ELSE!" read more

I've only been there once but was not impressed. It was dinner time, and I ordered their meatloaf meal. The mashed potatoes tasted bland (like something that came out of a huge metal can), but the slices of meatloaf were the worst I've had in a very long time. They tasted terrible - maybe like what you'd expect at a school cafeteria or a kids summer camp. Whatever they served me, it was NOT meatloaf (especially when compared to homemade or at least what you get at Cracker Barrel). It was all I could do to eat one slice; I left the other slice to meet the garbage fate they both deserved. Whenever we drive by the restaurant (which is frequently), all I can think about is the nasty meatloaf. I haven't given the restaurant a chance since. Someone who went with me ordered a different meal (some sandwich with sauerkraut), and they really enjoyed their meal. Others have encouraged me to give the restaurant one more try - and to go at breakfast, which is allegedly their best meal. The main thing going for this restaurant from my initial visit was I was very impressed with the friendly waitress. The chicken was 2 star at best. My party of three adults and one child had both roasted and "broasted" chicken. We weren't impressed. I ordered white meat and was presented, after some wait, with legs and thighs. Please train your staff. Other than that snafu, the waitress was sweet and attentive. Desert was delicious. My family loves New Freedom diner! It's everything a small town diner should be, right down to the old school coffee bar top where you can grab a seat if you're lucky. NFR was recommended for crab cakes. So glad we took the recommendation. Really good crab cakes full of crab and seasoned well. $15 for one huge cc and two sides. I opted for the garden salad with fantastic blue cheese dressing and a sweet potato. For $0.75 you can get a small cup of soup. The Hubs and I both tried the Tomato Crab Soup which was really rich and yummy. Service was friendly and efficient from start to finish. We will be back for sure! read more

We had a major change in our Thankgiving celebration this year due to the Covid thing. We were supposed to all have a family get together in Maryland at relatives house but all was canceled at almost the last second. My wife and I decided to order from New Freedom restaurant. We got Turkey dinner with all the trimmings for 4 and we were amazed at how good everything was. Since it was just the 2 of us we had plenty for dinners the subsequent nights through the weekend. Hubs and I went In here two weeks ago. Burger was good, Mushroom Swiss, but wasn't as big as the bun and perfectly round. So either it's a frozen burger or they cook it in a round burger cooker that keep the meat formed. Texture made me think frozen. Anywho, hubs got the gyro and it was good. Sweet tea isn't brewed sweet tea. Tastes like Lipton bottle which is gross. Overall though it's a good place to get a home cooked type meal. read more

They made my bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich as a chopped bacon omelette on toast. I wanted actual eggs, bacon, and cheese stacked. Told server I would be ok with them just putting a couple pieces of actual bacon on top. Another server came by and said that's how they make breakfast sandwiches and they could remake it the way I asked but if I wanted 2 pieces of bacon to put on the omelette sandwich I would be charged for a side of bacon. I told them to remake the sandwich then but then changed my mind and canceled the whole thing because my wife was almost done her steak. Seems ridiculous to be willing to toss the current sandwich to make a whole new one and make me wait then just bring two pieces of bacon. New Freedom Restaurant We haven't been to New Freedom Restaurant for at least six months because of a series of unfortunate experiences. I know it sounds incredible especially since this was one of our favorite go-to restaurants in the area, but it's true. I am not going to surface the issues that stopped us from visiting the restaurant on a weekly basis, but I am going to review our latest last-ditch effort to give the restaurant one more chance to redeem itself. A few days ago, we were in the mood for crab cakes and thought of New Freedom Restaurant since the crab cakes we had there previously consisted of almost entirely jumbo lump crabmeat. When we arrived, our favorite server, Hanah, had returned after quitting. She was just as surprised to see us as we were her. She knew our beverage order and went to get it while we perused the redesigned menu. I decided to get a new entree from the Specials Menu, the Jumbo Fried Oysters, a salad, and coleslaw, instead of crab cakes. My mother decided to get a new entree from the regular menu, the East Coast Basket; a Crab Cake, two pieces of fried chicken, and a salad. The restaurant stopped carrying the most popular salad dressing, the parmesan cracked pepper. So, we opted for other salad dressings. Nothing changed about the salads other than the dressings. They still offered a free beer with dinner. When the Jumbo Fried Oysters arrived at the table, I was utterly disgusted and disappointed. There were approximately seven-to-eight oysters on a bare, white plate with a wedge of lemon and two plastic containers of cocktail sauce. The oysters were small-to-medium in size. After putting some cocktail sauce on one of the oysters and eating it, it tasted like a fried potato pancake, not an oyster. There was absolutely no flavor of oyster whatsoever. And, the oysters were definitely not freshly hand-shucked although they varied in size. Not only was the presentation pathetic, but the taste was dour, too. My mother's crab cake was not jumbo lump crabmeat either. It was regular backfin crabmeat, not a lot of filler, mostly crabmeat, but not the usual jumbo lump crabmeat. Her wing and thigh were fried lightly crisp, and she enjoyed it. She ordered a baked potato with sour cream and butter with her entree. The potato was acceptable. I got my usual dessert, the chocolate eclair that comes from Yia Yia's Bakery. I usually rave about the eclairs, but the eclair tasted old. The chocolate was mottled, the Filo dough was stale, and the cream filling was bland. I complained about the oysters, but in the tradition of New Freedom Restaurant, they did nothing about it. I no longer support the once great place to eat at incredibly low prices. We will never return nor recommend the restaurant. I did not take pictures of the food this time because the food was not worthy of a photograph. read more

The food is actually pretty good. It's the service that is awful. The staff seems nice but the waitresses are constantly overly busy with little support staff. I have been there twice and both times food took forever. Literally like 40 minutes after we ordered today and 90 minutes after we sat down. Slow or no refills, burned French toast and my plate of food was cold while it was delivered. The waitress seemed to be running around like a mad woman though. Seems like she was serving 1/2 the restaurant and this place is big. The restaurant is understaffed and likely hires some staff that is unable to preform well in a large restaurant. Last time I was there, the waitress was nice but really slow and forgetful. It seemed like she couldn't manage all the tables she had and she was really struggling. Again, she was very nice but clearly not getting the help she needed. It makes me sad to say this because I wish them the best, but the running of this place needs serious revamping. I have rode by this place many times and always said, "I have to try this place one day!", and last Thursday while riding from the York Harley Davidson Open House, we made the stop! Upon walking in I sensed a comfortable and very relaxed family atmosphere. We were seated by our very pleasant server, Lisa, who took our beverage order while we looked over the menu. I ordered off the daily Specials page and had a Crab/corn chowder, Diner Burger w/onion rings and strawberry ice cream for desert. Every bite tasted as delicious as it looked. But he would be back soon. 20 mins later we checked out an I asked to speak to the manager again. He finally came out from the back. He did not appear to be sincerely apologetic, he even made a remark about the free food. J guess he means the chicken that was not eaten and was taken away.. will not eat there ever again. My husband and I live in Maryland but spend a lot of time in this area of PA. We usually go to a restaurant up the road but decided to try breakfast at the New Freedom Restaurant last Sunday. I was so excited when we walked in, the desserts in the case looked amazing and the food the other patrons had looked good. We were seated promptly. Then, we waited for over fifteen minutes and no one ever came to our table to take our drink order. The worst, we saw the servers pointing at us and talking among themselves two or three times. While waiting to be seated we overheard a waitress standing right next to us tell customers she knew about her table of 10 currently there that wouldn't shut up and leave. No one ever stopped by our table for so much as to take our drink order, we sat for 15 minutes waiting! Well busy or not, we didn't get even our drink order in while we sat and watched others come in after us and get served right away. How can you screw that up? The fries were cold, hard and greasy. The grilled cheese, the bread was great but a horrible taste processed cheese. My dad ordered some kinda beef on bread, barely any gravy and cold. Step moms meal was an almost veggie less veggie lasagna and also cold. My husband's eggs weren't cooked well and his pancakes came almost as we were finishing our meal.
