My family and I made a reservation for 7 to celebrate Mothers Day. We were able to get seated after 5 min or so and the waitress took our drink orders almost as soon as we got seated. We were offered coffee right away and loved hearing the specials for the day. The place was a nice bistro style decor so the tables were close together but it was quite clean. I ordered the Chesapeake omelette w/ cinnamon raisin bread and fresh fruit. I was very happy with my selection and the food came out rather quickly. I liked bread and omelette taste combination and the special came with a mimosa which was a nice surprise. I would recommend folks check it out for brunch/breakfast celebrations. read more

I came for lunch with several friends today and since reading the reviews I just had to order the baked tomato soup. Lovely presentation in a smallish white crock with a layer of cheese baked on top with some croutons popping through. The gals at my table said to be careful because it was so hot. Theirs was, mine had one hot spot which quickly became only lukewarm as I stirred it. I do think there was too much oregano in it for my taste. I asked for my bowl to be 'nuked' in the microwave so it would be hot and when it came back, it was indeed hot and it had extra flaked Parmesan on top. I stirred it in and honestly, it helped the overwhelming oregano taste. So that was a plus! The soup itself is filled with diced tomatoes and is creamy. Very good, once the extra cheese put the oregano in check. There were dark croutons in it, like maybe pumpernickel. I'd have preferred French or Italian bread croutons. I had the Twisted Allen sandwich which is a Rueben made with a grilled chicken breast ( the meat) served on a pretzel bun. Very tasty sandwich ! I chose house made potato chips and they were delish!! Other diners had some other sandwiches and they all looked good. One gal had a salad that looked superb. The tables around us had beautifully presented meals and our server was excellent. I have gone here 2 time for breakfast. Let just say I can make a better omelette. For the price you sure don't understand eggs or a omelette. I wanted a western omelette all there green peppers were sweet in which it gave a awful taste to it. The eggs weren't cook properly still had raw egg inside of it . If you can't get a omelette right I can't bring my self to come back for lunch or dinner. A diner make better one a cost is right but your is triple the price an can't get right. If you find yourself in York, Pennsylvania, you have to stop by this bistro. Their food is some of the best in the area and they use fresh and house made ingredients. The service is also fantastic- the fact that this is a family-owned bistro shows in the friendliness of the staff. Their salads and sandwiches are especially great when topped with their shaved London Broil (pictures over their signature salad). Don't leave without trying their bruschetta (also pictured), which is by far the best I've ever had. This is an adorable restaurant with a really quaint atmosphere. We went for dinner on a Friday night. The menu was really nice. They offered a nice mix of entrees. I ordered the shrimp stuffed with crab meat with a pecan and goat cheese salad and bacon sautéed Brussel sprouts. WOW! Everything was wonderful. My husband ordered the sage and mushroom risotto with a Caesar salad and the sea bass special. His food was awesome too. Yes... he's nice and shares. :-P This restaurant is a perfect Friday night splurge. The dinner prices for entrees are all around 30-ish dollars but they come with two premium sides. We will return most likely for brunch sometime soon. In addition to a warm atmosphere, and exceptional food, we also had wonderful attentive service. It really doesn't get any better. read more

A casual sit-down dining spot with a menu focused on sandwiches, soups and salads. This was my second visit, both times were with a group. We tried an assortment of things: Baked tomato soup -- basically tastes like lasagna, sans the noodles; presentation is similar to french onion soup. There were four bowls of this at our table of 6 and it was a big hit. Twice baked potato topped with crab cake and tomato -- this was a special which 3 out of 6 people at our table ordered and enjoyed. Bistro Club -- a layered turkey club sandwich Grilled Rachel -- a riff on a Reuben sandwich, but with turkey instead of pastrami (though they do have a regular Reuben as well) Black Russian -- thinly sliced London broil with grilled onions and horseradish dressing The sandwiches were all tasty and filling. We ordered one of the sandwiches with fries, which are steak fry style and delicious. While I'm not blown away by the food here, it's a solid, consistent place -- a nice lunch spot with good variety, good quality and good service. I've heard the brunch is great, so will try that at some point. read more

I dined here on what is apparently the only night of the week they're open for dinner, and I'm glad I did. It's a cute, clean little spot that has a bit of a Mediterranean vibe to it (or at least as much as one can have in York). It was late, and I was hungry, and I opted for their salmon special, which came with crab meat atop it and what I think was a lemon sauce. When ordering most mains, two sides come with them, which for me meant a salad (with mandarin oranges, a bit of cheese and a sweet--cranberry, I believe--vinaigrette) and then a generous portion of grilled veggies surrounding the salad. Bread came first, and a hot roll with nicely spreadable butter was a good way to take the edge off. It seems like the definition of a four-star spot--very good, though not quite perfect. The salad was tasty, though the dressing might have been a hair sweet for me. The bread could have used a little more flavor, though slathering butter on it did a lot to perk it up. The salmon was nicely cooked, and I very much enjoyed the crab on top of it as well. The veggies were simply but properly cooked--nothing was overcooked, which is always a plus. Servers were friendly--there's a certain informality to the place--and fairly attentive. All in all, an enjoyable spot. Prices on the mains aren't super low (high 20s to low 30s), but given that they come with sides and portions are substantial, I found pricing to be fair. Wow. I came here for Mother's Days breakfast. I surprised my mom by driving 3.5 hrs in the morning from Pittsburgh. I cannot believe I woke up at 5:30 in the morning to make it to this breakfast, but you know what? It's absolutely worth it. I had the best egg Benedict in my whole entire life. They had a Mother's Day breakfast special - lobster egg Benedict with grits. It also came with mimosa. The whole plate was presented so beautifully and my first bite was the cheesy creamy grits. I normally am not a fan of grits but goodness I LOVE THIS, so freaking good! And mmm the Lobster Benedict. Wow everything was so good. I was exhausted from driving at first but eating this delicious food, it just made me so damn happy! My family all enjoyed the food, my dad got the drunken French toast, and THAT was so special as well. I highly recommended both of these dishes. I cannot wait to return to this place. read more

One of the better breakfasts I can remember having in a long time. Tucked away in a small shopping center in York, Tapinade is the kind of breakfast place that everyone wishes they had nearby. Definitely come hungry - featured menu items are enormous 3-egg omelettes, buttermilk pancakes twice the size of your face (but half the cost of a 20 dollar bill), and larger-than-average cups of interesting coffee roasts, such as the red velvet blend I had during my visit. Come thirsty as well - BYOB! We brought champagne for self-poured mimosas. The dining area is small but tables are spaced well; no need for claustrophobics to worry. Very friendly, warm vibes were impossible to ignore. My impression was that the staff genuinely valued our business, and they made it a point to check in with us frequently without interrupting conversations. The menu didn't seem to have a weak spot. I would love to come back and experience more of it. Glad I had a chance to stop in. read more

This is our go-to breakfast spot in York! Sure, there aren't too many - but Tapenade is a gem of a spot regardless. I'm not a huge fan of the lunch menu; it's primarily sandwiches and salads. We've had lunch here once and it was okay. Breakfast, on the other hand, is phenomenal. (Hence the five star rating). This is my favorite spot for breakfast and lunch in York. I have eaten here at least 300 times over the past 5 years - no exaggeration - and have never been disappointed. Tapenade is head and shoulders above 99.5% of the restaurants in York County. This is a great place to go for meals for business or pleasure. The food is fresh and creatively prepared and the service is excellent. Even when we couldn't make it to the restaurant (due to the birth of my daughter and other life events), my husband would make the 50+ minute roundtrip drive to pick up breakfast on Saturdays. Absolutely LOVE the breakfast food here - the Benedicts, omelettes and baked oatmeal are excellent. My absolute favorite is the California Eggs Benedict. I get the hollandaise sauce on the side of the Benedicts and also the Cordon Bleu omelette, which is tasty. The breakfast potatoes are excellent and my kids love the pancakes and French toast, as well as the breakfast meats - ham, bacon and sausage. We also typically share a fruit and yogurt parfait, which is always really good. The soup is always good here. My mom loves the tomato soup. I usually get a seafood soup. The salads are very good (favorites include the Spinach & grilled chicken salad, Chicken alla orange salad, and the California Cobb) and sandwiches never disappoint. Try the Mac-n-cheese side if they have it that day - it's so good! I usually get the Turkey Florentine & Bacon sandwich and my husband gets the chicken salad sandwich, which has grapes and is served on a delicious soft croissant, and we share/split them. Highly recommend either/both! And definitely also ask if they have the sweet potato casserole side - my husband absolutely drools over it. We've had dinner here a handful of times and it was always very good. Most importantly, after becoming a "regular" here, the staff and owner (who are truly wonderful and lovely people) made an effort to get to know our family and when my mom was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago, they always asked about her and even offered to take food to her since I was relocating across the country -- not a level of caring that you often experience as a restaurant patron. The staff and owners really do care about their customers and you become part of their extended family. Also wanted to mention that I took 2 group cooking classes here (offered on Sundays from time to time) and they were a fantastic experience, too! Love, love, love Tapenade Bistro!!! I had lunch here today with my sister. I had eaten here some years before and was excited to go back. We arrived at 11:20, and she asked about breakfast options. She was disappointed to discover that they could only bring the baked oatmeal as they had already converted to the lunch menu. We ordered our food - a burger on gluten free bread(they did not have gluten free buns) and the special of the day - a flatbread cheesesteak with their ranch dressing. It was supposed to be London Broil, but some of the meat looked more like chip steak. Also, the dressing was VERY spicy. She said it had ranch on it, not the habanero ranch it came with. The specials board also only said ranch dressing. The food was okay - for the price. I thought it was very over priced for what it was. She had a burger that came with fries, I had the special flatbread, which didn't come with any sides. My sister had a hot tea and I had coffee. We both had water. Our bill was $37 and change. For that price for two sandwiches, I want it to be excellent, not just decent. The atmosphere is very nice. read more

First off, I love the little center that the Tapenade Bistro is located - there's some cool little shops there, and I really liked walking around and checking out the bakery and wine shop right there. My hubs and I love this place! We have never been here for lunch, but we absolutely love the breakfast. Just this morning I had the special- lemon and blueberry baked oatmeal... Yum! My hubs had an omelet with spinach, mushroom, and spicy sausage. The eggs were fluffy and cooked perfectly. The coffee is always really good too! Although the food is delicious, the ownership is always standoffish. My family of color has visited this establishment several times and witnessed how friendly the owners can be to some. But we have never been made to feel included in their small talk and welcoming behavior. Today our waitress was so sweet and very kind. But yet again, we witnessed the two female owners spending time at numerous other tables with small talk and kind words and laughter; yet again not a peep to us, not even a "how is your breakfast." At one time, I made eye contact with one of the owners and she deliberately averted her glance to avoid a friendly exchange. Woohoo! As good as it gets! Can't think of anything that says it better. I've lived in twenty locations in the USA and visited multiple locations in Peru where I experienced the most incredible food to ever sneak under my palate and dance on my taste buds. And then. There is Tapenade Bistro. Now I'll admit I don't nor is it likely that I will ever run with the elite (and seemingly very critical) cuisine critique crowd. But, I'm pretty good at distinguishing when I am having a flood of joy pour over me in response to some tasty morsel I just popped into my mouth! I can't tell you how many times I have experienced breakfast with these folks because I'm too busy enjoying the afterglow of a fantastic dining experence each time to bother carving notches on a tally sheet. I have found Darlene and her staff to be very friendly, warm, and attentive, but of course I was not sitting at my table waiting to be offended because someone else did or did not initiate a conversation with me. Relationships take time and investment from both sides and if you invest here over time I am sure you'll soon find yourself feeling like you are dining with family! These folks really do a fabulous, amazingly good, wonderful, and awesome job of providing an great dining experience that goes well beyond consuming a plate of really great food! When I was a youngster many a year ago, there was a Quick Draw McGraw cartoon that featured a dog named Snuffles and when he was a good boy receiving his treat he would wrap his "arms" around himself as he proclaimed Mmmmh, Mmmmh over and over til he floated up into the air and back down like a feather with a big ol smile of satisfaction on his face. I have been kicking myself all week for not finding Tapenade earlier! My girlfriends and I went for a "Mom's Night Out" dinner at Tapenade Bistro last week and the food, service and atmosphere were wonderful. Our waitress was happy to chill our wine and even made some great suggestions when we couldn't decide on meals. I had Chicken Caprese and it was delicious. The dinner came out at a reasonable time, we had just finish passing some appetizers around and our waitress had just topped off our drinks. We were in somewhat of a hurry, our fault for sitting around talking instead of ordering, and our waitress went ahead and split our check for us and had everything ready for us to make a fast getaway. I would absolutely recommend Tapenade to anyone, in fact I'm trying to figure out a way to get back there this weekend! read more

Went for dinner after hearing great things from many people. The restaurant is small but cozy. Don't love the decor, but that's just personal taste. It's very clean and the service was attentive. The meal started with focaccia and an olive tapenade, which was delicious. We split calamari, which was nothing special. It was good, but not great. The marinara was no better than a pizza shop's. We then got our salads, which came with the meal. The Caesar salads came with house made dressing and croutons. The greens were fresh and crisp and then even brought anchovies after I requested them. Then the entrees came. My entree was a shrimp scallopini for $29. It was a serving bowl-sized dish with maybe 3 cups of liquid(sauce) in it. There was an overwhelming taste of garlic and nothing else. I love garlic but this was way too much. It overpowered any other flavor in the dish. The shrimp were large but frozen. The pasta, swimming in watery sauce, was cooked well but not fresh. I have no problem paying $29 for an entree. This was not a $29 entree. It was a $18 entree, at best. My husband got squash ravioli. The ravioli was obviously not drained very well because it was watery under the sauce. The sauce's flavor was cinnamon. That's it. There may have been more to it but you couldn't taste it with the cinnamon. It was awful. And way, way overpriced. Neither of these entrees was cooked with any skill or flair. Honestly, the entrees came out so quickly I think they weren't even made-to-order. Our bill was over $80, with tip. We didn't even have dessert, which I hear is very good, because we had given them enough of our money. I felt swindled. What a joke. read more

Our family, parents, daughter and son in law and granddaughter had a rough night visiting a sick relative and looked for a nice local place nearby. Went to the Tapenade Bistro at 8:20 pm on a Friday night because it had good reviews. A standoffish, unhelpful staff claimed that while the sign says they are open until 10 pm, their last seating is at 8:00 pm. Truly un believable that a place would say that with a straight face.
