You must get one of the platters here. The tacos are just mediocre, and I'm a tad perplexed why most of the reviews here mention the burrito - I wouldn't ever really recommend getting the burrito at a real Mexican-Mexican place in NYC. Save your burrito craving for the California-style places. Actually, just save it for California. The chef at this place shows obvious love and pride in the specials. Last night I got the carne asada plate, expecting the typical slab of flank steak, rubbery but adequate when dressed with enough of the homemade salsa verde that accompanies every meal. The first surprise was when the server asked if I'd like my meat cooked medium-rare or well. Wow, I thought, maybe I'm getting something a little more special here. What arrived at my plate was just stunning! A GIANT cut of a sirloin steak, beautifully charred (grilled!) on the outside, while impossibly pink and succulent within. It was phenomenal, and at $11.95, certainly the best value in the neighborhood. The carne asada is served with fries and rice, though I subbed out beans for my fries. Accompanied by a side of flour tortillas, the meal made my day. My friend got the chiles rellenos, which were also excellent: Smoky, complex, with a fantastic alternatingly soft and crunchy texture. On a previous visit I tried the pozole (only available on weekends) but it wasn't tremendous, only average. They put chicken in it, rather than pork... Somewhat curiously, the menu offers a pupusa, those Salvadoran meat-filled (or cheese or been) goodies. The chicken pupusa, which we tried last night, was delicious. The tacos, as mentioned above, are not great, and neither is the tostada. It's best to stick with the platters. This place has beer and apparently homemade sangria. It has low lighting and despite being nearly always at least 95% empty, it is a friendly and comfortable place to relax over a leisurely dinner. read more

Ordered delivery, didn't tell me the total or how long it would take. Waited 1hr 15mins for cold food. With no oven or microwave to heat up the cold slop they excused for food, we called back for them to say they would resend someone in 20 mins. Told them I would call back in 15mins to check back on the re-order. My friend ordered one quesadilla with a side of rice and beans. I ordered a chimichanga. When we looked inside the takeout boxes again to try and salvage whatever edible anything we could eat, the rice and beans were not even halfway filled and the quesadilla had no cheese or ingredients that were anywhere near a quesadilla. I was pleased until they called back a 3rd time to say the delivery person had gotten into an accident and that they had no bikes and would have to give us credit. She didn't sound too convincing. I was very surprised and shocked at this matter. We ended up not eating dinner and are still starving. I gave her my name and number without much confidence and told her I would be there the next day to get my food and redeem my credit. I love how cute this place was on the inside, which was completely unexpected from looking at it's exterior. From the exterior, this place looked more like a take-out Chinese-owned Mexican joint. Fortunately, it wasn't. The ladies in here were politely nice, didn't say much, but were nice nonetheless. We had the horchata and a michelada before ordering our food. The horchata was a lovely, milky texture with a nice roasty rice taste. The michelada wasn't as good as the ones I've had in Mexico, I don't think I tasted any lime in it, it was actually quite odd. I couldn't make out what was in it. The food here is quite simply prepared, very filling, and pretty flavorful....especially at these prices. Oh man, being from California, this restaurant hits home for me. The menu is simple, the value is spot on, and the staff is really nice. The tostadas, tacos, rice and beans are my fave and quite tasty! So are the quesadillas. Can't forget about those. They're prepared more on the traditional side, using queso fresco instead of shredded cheese and a gordita (thick corn masa shell) instead of a tortilla. Yeah, I'm definitely a fan! Our standard Mexican delivery choice, although being three blocks from our home we're increasingly doing takeout. In a neighborhood full of Mexican options, Nuevo Mexico stands out for authenticity and fresh flavors. You won't find any frozen peas or chopped carrots in the burritos or grated cheddar cheese on the tacos. The quesadillas are massive and quite nice. The pork and chicken taste rather fresh - not like they've been stewing in a pot all day. Delievery, ordering is quick, painless and error free. There's still more more menu exploring ahead of me: chilaquiles, tortas, soups, cemitas, but my half-dozen trips have convinced me that this is the best spot in the neighborhood. Pro tip: If you can, eat in. Chips and salsa are free at the restaurant, but a steep $4.50 when ordered. In two years of ordering from/eating here, I don't think I've ever had a bad meal at New Mexico Place. From my days as a burrito al pastor gal to my current meatless ways, this place has been consistently great. The portions are huge, which is good when you're having a serious carbohydrate-and-cheese craving, a problem that I think a lot of Mexican food was invented to solve. Hungry? Stressed? Overwhelmed? Nothing that a plate of spicy enchiladas with salsa verde can't fix. Nothing's going right in the world? Eat some more guacamole and you'll feel better in no time. I live 10 minutes away which makes this the perfect late night dinner spot. I'm pretty obsessed with Mexican food. Originally from LA, I feel confident that I know good Mexican food. HOWEVER, I can't say I'm an expert at all on Tex Mex. As a result, New Mexico Place has some dishes that fit my style, and others that don't make the mark. Regardless of your preference, their enchiladas are killer. Seriously, I don't even like enchiladas but I decided to order the Enchiladas Suizas because Yelp told me to and it was the best choice. Huge portions, super gooey cheesy, excellent flavor and spice, and super comforting. I had enough to take home for leftovers! Their guacamole and home made chips are also amazing. A little pricy compared to everything else on the menu but we were starved and guacamole always hits the spot. Tacos are a different story. I love love love tacos. I'll eat tacos for breakfast, and I often do. New Mexico Place does tacos with a Tex Mex twist because they top it with lots of lettuce, a bit of crema, and sprinkles of diced tomato. Typically, I like my tacos with pure Mexican toppings - raw onion, cilantro, and maybe a little salsa/pico de gallo. We eventually ended up brushing off most of the lettuce and putting on their salsas which were amazing so it wasn't too bad. Just make sure you figure out what you like! My boyfriend got a plethora of tacos and I think our favorites were fish, barbacoa, and chorizo. They ran out of shrimp so will have to try that next time. Yumyumyum! This place is so good, and makes me happy to live near it. The food is so delicious and affordable, that it rivals going to the grocery store. For $3 you get a huge quesadilla in a home made tortilla that is filled with delicious ingredients. For $4.50 you get three huge delicious flautas, which is a great deal, considering that at Bonita on Bedford ave you get only two little ones for $7 (sorry David!). This is one of my neighborhood places for good food, decent portions and reasonable prices (most items are in the $10-18 range). They've really undergone a transformation over the past few years both in terms of the decor and the menu. This was to keep up with the changing neighborhood and I think they're succeeding. A drawback up until recently was that they didn't serve liquor (BYOB), but they now serve beer and wine. Try the sangria ($22 for a pitcher. I call them--to add drinks to my order--and I'm placed on hold for a lengthy time--finally I'm told that my delivery guy refuses to deliver to my address. My order would have easily been $50, and I'm a good tipper, but they won't deliver to my address. I was told they would prepare my food IF I wanted to come pick it up. Maybe they should specify what other address they prefer NOT to deliver to. A saddddd disappointment because the food looks delicious. I'm addicted to their dobladas de papa. Their aguas frescas are pretty good usually too. Avoid anything that is the "veggie" version of any dish. I'm a vegetarian and I have done well to stick to beans and rice, potato tacos, and the avocado salad and juices. Their guac is pretty bad but edible if you're desperate (doesn't seem to have much real avocado, or it's just very watered down with other bland ingredients). Went here on a Yelp recommendation and I have to say this is why Yelp exists. The carnitas burrito is probably the best burrito I've had in New York. Rice is soft, moist and perfectly textured with hits of tomato and guac (on the side) to round out the flavors. The pork was cooked perfectly. I've never eaten a burrito with meat cooked so well. If I had to guess I'd say it was pan-fried, but left to sit just long enough that one side gets a nice crisp while the rest of the meat remains tender and delicious. Not only do I love to eat here, but whenever I'm drinking in Williamsburg I order delivery from here as well. The torta is good as well, and I've been meaning to try the lengua tacos (they were out of the meat the last time I was there) but the burrito is certainly the star. read more

This is probably my favorite restaurant in my immediate area, off the Montrose L. The food here is consistently delicious and I've never had a bad meal here. The quesadillas, chalupas, and gorditas are all excellent. I'd never had a cemita before I had one here, and I have to say, a burger and a taco mixed together is a genius pairing. I gave this four stars because of the environment of the restaurant. There is usually loud Spanish music blasting out of the jukebox to the point where you have to shout for your friends to hear you across the table. For this reason, I think it's better to get take-out here or have it delivered. And, furthermore, their delivery time is excellent and the food is never sloppy or cold when it gets to you. If you are yelping a Mexican place in this area, look no further. You stomach and wallet will thank you later. read more

But no more after today. It took more than two hours for a burrito to arrive. And when it did arrive the meat was nothing but char and fat. Now would be enough, but we also found a 3/4 inch metal wire in the burrito. Like a big stabby piece of metal. Called Grubhub (who the order was placed through) and they connected me to the restaurant.... who offered to refund 10% of my order. That doesn't even cover the tip! The inside is super cute which is why we ate here. I asked for hot chocolate and our waitress brought me another drink and wanted me to pay for it. I politely sent it back. Then she left the drink sitting there and walked away to continue to watch TV. The entire staff watched television and didn't refill our water, give us napkins, or asked did we need anything. After that the queso that wasn't queso came out and it wasn't good and the cheese was really stiff with 5 chips in it for $9. We told her that the queso wasn't good and she said she was still charging us. We were super nice and calm but wanted to pay for the chips and swap the dip out. She then avoided us and we had to ask for the check. I could understand if the restaurant was busy but we are the only two in here.
