The best Tex-Mex you can get in Williamsburg hands down, and decently priced, but you absolutely have to call the restaurant to order or to confirm your online order because their business hours are not correctly posted on any platform. I have now twice ordered via Grub Hub and found out two hours later that the restaurant was not even open (though clearly my mistake the second time around for forgetting)! I'm so glad this place got it's act together. When I used to go here, the place was mad understaffed. It would take forever to get anything. They also had a great selection of breakfast items (huevos rancheros, huevos picados, etc) that I wanted to try and claimed to open at 10 each morning. The problem is, they never opened before 12:30. I subpoenaed a tape from the surveillance camera when I brought this up. Here's a transcript of me talking to the manager. "So what time do you open?" I said. "10 o'clock in the morning." she said "Right.... But you didn't open 'till 1 today. I live across the street. Do you just open at 10 on the weekends?" I asked. "Si. Si. Every day 10 o'clock we open." she said. "Right but yesterday you didn't open 'till noon. The day before you didn't open 'till 1. The gate was down and nobody answered the phone. I've never seen this place open before noon." I said. "Si. Si. 10 o'clock we open. Every day." She said. Anyway, they renovated the place and got rid of the mediocre rotisserie chicken. Service is much better and they have gone back to what makes this place great. Authentic Mexican food. Ahhh, Mexican food. Simple, delicious food that has nothing in common with what you find at Loco Burrito or Taco Bell. I mean no disprepect to the many other types of Mexican fusion. They're certainly no more or less valid than the Tex-Mex food I love. My mom is a chicana from Texas and passed down her love of the cuisine to me. For me, Mexican food begins and ends with tacos, burritos, tortas, and the occasional menudo on New Years day. This place delivers the goods. "We got you, baby. You want Goat tacos, we got it. You want Beef Tongue Tacos, we got that too. Pork Ear Tacos, Cilantro/Onion Tacos....Let's get all Mexican up in here." My 2 Favorite Tacos: The Deluxe Taco This sucka has Steak, Sausage, Onion, Pepper, and Mozzarella Cheese. The Nuevo Mexico Taco: This bad boy comes with any meat you want. It has Cilantro, Onions, Tomatoes, Lettuce, Crema Fraiche and comes on a homemade tortilla. Got-Damn! Their burritos are superb and their tortas are the closest to the ones my Tia Aurora makes that I have found in the city. Their homemade guacamole is both fresh and delicious. **TAX SCAM This place overestimates tax on all food orders and rounds up to the nearest dollar. If you are ordering pickup or delivery (outside of seamless/grubhub bc tax is automatic there) BEWARE and call them out on it! I am not sure if it is a policy passed down by the owner or something the counter people do to get extra tip money, but either way it is illegal. I don't think anyone else really thinks about it or cares, I know for a while I haven't. For me, it is the principle that they are pretty much stealing money. --Just to confirm, NY city sales tax is 8.9%-- I recently called them out on this scam when I went to pick up food. I asked how they got to $2 tax on a $15 food order (should have been around $1.34). The first girl couldn't explain - or was scared to - so she referred me to a second waitress/counter person. I asked her how they arrived at $2 on $15. She said "well it's 8%" (which is still wrong), but I called her out on the fact that the tax was more around $1.30. She got out a calculator and put in the numbers (I saw her type everything) and the darn thing displayed $2! They must have it rigged to round up. I pulled out my phone and did the calculation for her and showed both of them. She then said "well, you don't like it, you don't have to pay it" and I told her what she was doing is illegal. I said I would pay the correct amount, and she got upset, pulled out the 70 cents and said "this is what you're arguing about?" I told her it was the principle. I gave her my card, told her what to charge me, paid and walked out. This is actually quite insane and I know nobody notices. I can't imagine how much extra cash they make with all of the orders, it must run into the hundreds of dollars each day and into the thousands per month. I plan on trying to speak to the owner and also filing a complaint with the BBB. I just checked this place out on the recommendation of other yelpers, and their reviews are spot on. The food here is amazing & cheap. I've been having a hangover day, so New Mexico Place was the first food I ate all day (at 7pm) & I basically had a Mexican feast. They have mexican coke in bottles here which was a godsend to my stomach. Then I stuffed it full of nachos with guacamole - ummm their guac is soooo good - AND I had the flautas. Three of those tasty guys for $4.50! Wut!! My whole feast was like $13. This place is horrible. Lets start at the begining. I walk in. All the lights are off and the time was 1:30pm. Its prime time lunch service and no lights. The walls are hardly painted and i just didn't want to be there. However, i stuck it out and gave it a GO, because the reviews are good...I dont know what you guys are thinking. I order and as she was taking my order and explaining a few things to me about the menu she left---yes just walked away. No warning, she want into the kitchen and gave food to another person waiting. I love this place. The spicy pork burrito is fantastic, but even better in chimichanga form. Their molle enchiladas were also pretty good but a little too sweet for my taste. I am a little reluctant to write this review because this spot is perfect and i don't want a huge rush of hipsters all up in my "local" taco joint. Its not really even local as only my boyfriend lives nearby so i only go here when i'm visiting him. But now that he's moving i can unleash the secret! This place is awesome. You can get a solid meal here for less than $10 and it is never crowded. Tacos, burritos, quesadillas-- its all good, traditional style mexican. Spicy pork, chicken tinga and chorizo are my favorites here. You can get the spicy pork as a platter, it comes with rice and beans and a basket of tortillas. So good! And if you eat there, you get free (freshly fried) chips and salsa. Their salsa is a little soupy and took some getting used to but it always made fresh (you can tell cause the cilantro is so green!). I have come to love the salsa. Also, strawberry agua fresca. YUM! Oh oh, and they have a steak platter there that is decent. I mean its not peter luger steak or anything but for something like $15 you get a steak, rice/beans, a taquito type thing, and onions/peppers type thing. Its a lot of food and it tastes good. Mexican Food is hit or miss in Manhattan. Which is why I stay away from it when i'm in the city. Some of the best is located in Brooklyn. This place definitely knows what good food is. I recommend getting anything with Chorizo. Whether it be tacos, flautas or the best thing there, burritos. Try the CHORIZO! It's pretty damn good. My mouth is already watering right now. Finally! Mexican food that I can enjoy like how they do it in California. I've been on a search and craving for Mexican food like the way they do it in Southern California since I moved here 6 years ago, with no luck. Then late last night on a craving binge, I decided to find a random mexican restaurant that still delivers around 10:30pm and stumbled on New Mexico Place. The food arrived promptly (perhaps because it was close to their closing time) and when I opened the box, i could already tell this was going to be good. I ordered 3 tacos (bistec, spicy enchilladas, and tongue) and a tamarindo drink all for $11. Amazing. Good proportions and the tacos were simple the way i like them. Just cilantro, onion and lettuce. The beef (bistec) was the closest thing to carne asada i've had here in NY. thrilled! Even the hot sauce was similar to the style i was used to back in Cali. I can't believe i've finally found a Mexican joint that I can crave now and it's just down a few blocks from me. This is going to be a good year. My first visit to New Mexico Place raised an important question: can you give a restaurant five stars for a dish that isn't actually on the menu? Here's the story. Like any good ex-San Franciscan, I've spent many nights since I moved to New York dreaming that of one special taqueria I left behind in the Mission. I have since found plenty of good (and even great) Mexican restaurants in New York City for when I'm in the mood for tacos, enchiladas, chilaquiles, or tamales, but I still hadn't found my burrito joint -- until I came to New Mexico Place Restaurant, that is. Which brings us back to the question at hand: can you give a restaurant five stars for a dish that isn't actually on the menu? See, I had a not-perfect-but-genuinely-great burrito at New Mexico Place, but this is how I had to order it: "One chicken burrito, please. Can you add beans? Okay, great, one chicken burrito with beans, plea-- oh, wait, I'm not done quite yet. One chicken burrito with beans, please, but no lettuce, tomato, sour cream, or cheese. Yes, that's right -- one chicken burrito, add beans, no salad. So ... that would just be a burrito with chicken, beans, rice, and guacamole, I guess. Yeah, perfect. One of those, please!" I came exactly as I ordered, and it was FAN-TAS-T -- -- Okay, maybe I'm getting a little overexcited here. The rice was a bit drier than I would have liked (but I immediately fixed that problem with the delicious spicy red and green salsas they brought upon request), and the tortilla wasn't a little bit grilled on the outside (which is an important issue to anyone trying to recreate a sort-of-Mission-like-burrito). So maybe it wasn't quite fantastic, exactly, but it was really damn good. The chicken was moist and not icky at all (i.e., no scary bits of fat or connective tissue floating around), the guacamole was great and very limey, and the whole thing was certainly big enough to share. I'll definitely be back -- and next time, I'll ask them to grill the outside of the burrito for a second after they wrap it. The final verdict? Although I'm tempted to give New Mexico Place five stars for making the first craveable burrito I've had since I moved to New York, I just can't forget that, if left to their own devices, they would have served me something STUFFED WITH LETTUCE. So four stars it is. They shouldn't be sad, though, because they're going to get something even better than that fifth star: a lot of my money over the coming months. read more

As a tex-pat living in NYC, finding good Mexican food around here is like searching for the holy grail. New Mexico Place is one of the few Mexican places that didn't fill me with rage. I used to eat here all of the time when I lived around the corner from the place. Now that I live in Greenpoint, I will take the 20 minute ride on the B43 just for their delicious tacos, gorditas, and enchiladas mole. The portions are huge and cheap! Also, the Mexican Coca-Cola that is always spelled "cock" on my order ticket never ceases to crack me up (I am forever 12). It still surprises me that after being open 2 years, this place is ALWAYS empty. But I'm also okay with it being like my own little secret taco place. Only downsides are: a) they charge $6 for chips and salsa if you get your order to go (it's free if you eat in the restaurant). The salsa is delicious and spicy and the chips are homemade, but $6, really? b) sometimes they do not answer their phone when you call to place a delivery order. I'm not sure if they just don't want to answer the phone or if it's because their jukebox is always turned up to 11, so they just can't hear it. (turn that thing down already!) read more

Do not be fooled by the awning or the ghost township you may find at most times of the day: this place is superb. The prices are so right and the food is so fresh. Nothing is greasy, and all meat is high-quality and well prepared (none of that pesky, purple chicken tucked under a blanket of beans). The queso blanco is delightful. The chorizo is well seasoned. The burritos are huge, so don't try to eat the whole thing in one sitting (unless you plan to take a long nap later). The service is totally, 100% subpar and zombie-like, but it doesn't affect the rating for me because I don't give a shit about service in restaurants like these as long as the food comes out in a timely fashion and the waiter/waitress isn't being an asshole. I then looked at the menu and saw cheese flautas that were so cheap that I assumed they had to be subpar. WRONG AGAIN. They blew my mind in their awesomeness and the portion was generous too. I should probably add at this point that the friend I came with is Mexican and does not suffer fools gladly when it comes to people who try to fuck around with her Mexican food. No problems here. By the middle of the meal, she nearly had tears in her eyes (and it wasn't just her intense enjoyment of one of the super-hot salsas). I just moved to Brooklyn over a month ago from Texas, and have since been on the hunt for some quality mexican food. Of the places I've tried so far, New Mexico Place is now my default for quality food, sizeable portions, and reasonable price. I tried the spicy pork burrito. Although everyone compared this to a chipotle burrito in size, it was actually bigger. It was stuffed with rice, beans, cheese, and spicy pork. With it, were ample sides of sour cream and guacamole. (the sides more than covered the burrito, unlike when ordering fajitas at your local family style restaurant where they serve you a pound of beef and a thimble of sides). When I started into it, I immediately felt like I was taking part in a man vs. food challenge. This thing can easily be two meals. While not overwhelmingly unique in any regards, all of the ingredients were quality and had plenty of flavor. Especially the pork, which did have a lingering spice to it (not hot, just good flavor). Their red and green salsa were both good as well. I'd recommend the green, it's got a sweet taste at first, but then sort of a tangy spice on the back end. My girlfriend ordered the picaditas which were like 3 corn tortilla pizzas with onion, green sauce, cheese and sour cream. She also had a fried pork taco and we split a side of rice and beans, and a side of guacamole. Both were plenty to share between us. I am a little disappointed we didn't get any chips w/ the guac, not sure if you have to request that specifically, but after all the other rave reviews I had read, I'm bummed they weren't in our bag. The worst part about my order is that it took over an hour to be delivered on a Sunday night. But based on the food I'm going to give it another try, hopefully delivery isn't that consistently slow. I'm putting it right out there at the onset, the shrimp nachos at New Mexico Place could be the best I've ever had. Seriously! Nachos are something that in my opinion Tex and Cal Mex just gets better. Giant plates of tortilla chips that are messy with meat and cheese and beans and vegetables and everything else. Well these nachos follow that recipe. And the shrimp are cooked perfectly. And the chips have a really strong corn flavor... I could go on and on. As far as the other items go, they were all good. Barbacoa taco had lots of flavor and plenty of crunchy griddled ends. Minus points for having lengua on the menu, but being out of it. They had huitlacoche quesadillas, which were good and really big. The gordita came out a lot later than the rest of the food, but was hot and crispy. Fish tacos were pretty good. The tinga tostada was crunchy on the bottom, saucy on top. The service was a little slow, as there was only one girl working all the tables and the phone. But the food is really good. Some of the better tacos I've ever had. Have tried chorizo, barbacoa, lengua, and al pastor tacos as well as the chicharron gordita. No usage of nasty flour tortillas replacements. Meat is not dry. The tacos are never soggy (which is a problem most ny-area taco places seem to have often). Tacos done RIGHT. I do however have doubts about sanitation, but I will sometimes tolerate suspect conditions for good food (think India, Korea, etc). The decor is obviously abysmal (the facade of the restaurant evokes the same emotions as the movie Saw), but completely irrelevant as I only care about those delicious tacos. Friends, family and I have been ordering from and dining at New Mexico for over 5 years and they consistently deliver. The food is authentic non-Americanized Mexican food full of flavor and often spicy. The food may not look great, and the decor is not up to date, but it tastes amazing and that is what matters. I was absolutely shocked by the 1 star reviews on Yelp. We've ordered from them countless times and never had cold or bad food. Everything has been awesome! That is what motivated me to write a review and show my support. One person even said that they thought that the positive reviews for New Mexico were fake. I assure you that many people love New Mexico. My NYC flauta quest has finally been put to rest. The frontrunner was Mesa Mexicana in East Harlem but lost out by an inch. Came here Wednesday evening after work. First attempt to find the place was unsuccessful since the awning is no longer red but is now green, white, and red to show their Mexican pride. I ordered a Mexican Coke ($2), chicken flautas ($4.50), and a steak burrito ($6). The prices made me happy. This place is special for the simple fact that it's where I popped my Mexican Coke cherry. Like most hyped-up first-time experiences, I have to admit that it was not all that I expected it to be. I couldn't taste a huge difference. But this was not the Coke nor the restaurant's fault. The complimentary chips and salsa were my favorite in this city to date. The chips were totopes - airy and fluffy. Loved it. The rest of the food arrived quickly. The chicken flautas passed! Perfect crunch and the chicken was seasoned and not dry. Finally, a place in NYC where I can get some solid flautas. The three flautas are not served with rice and refried beans, nor sour cream and guacamole (a la Garcia's in Chicago), but were cheap enough to easily add the sides and create your own meal. This will definitely be the place I go to for my flauta fix in NYC. The burrito, on the other hand, was topped with sour cream and served with guacamole, lettuce, and tomato. The rice was a little too salty for my tastes but the burrito was fine overall. I'm looking forward to trying other things on the extensive menu, including the huaraches and pupusas - my two favorites at the Red Hook ballfields. Ok, this place requires one of those Zagat style three pronged reviews because of some major disconnect between food and service. They have good burritos here. A big filling one for a decent price. Not the best burrito I've ever had but definitely satisfying. However nice a burrito is though it should not take 25 min to make, esp when you are the only person in the place on a Saturday morning. Well at least these guys are holding it down. What the hell has happened to Zocalo, Taco Bite, Don Pancho, Yolas!? New Mexico Place will deliver quickly and pack a punch. Large Fork&Knife-style burritos, and everything else you've come to expect from an NYC "Mexican" spot. Overall, pretty run-of-the mill, but the service was fast and friendly, which leads to an overall positive experience/review. We'll be calling upon NMP again soon. read more

Being that I am from Los Angeles currently living in New York... the 2 years I lived here before I found New Mexico Place had me on the brink of suicide from lack of good tasting, reasonably priced, Mexican Food. I wasn't asking for too much.... just a solid burrito properly rolled, with refried beans! Lastly, is it too much to ask for real guacamole?! *sighs* My burrito dreams came true when I found this place.... Three Words: "Spicy Pork Burrito" that is all! We went to this restaurant with high expectations given the other glowing Yelp reviews, but unfortunately it didn't pan out. The service was really poor -- our waitress took 10 minutes to come over to give us menus and another 10 to deliver our water. My boyfriend ordered the mole enchiladas, which took 20+ to come out. The mole sauce was delish, but the lack of sides accompanying the enchilada (read: none) was pretty disappointing. My cheese enchiladas looked like they were filled with 3 sad pieces of string cheese (with most of the enchilada being soggy corn tortillas with no cheese), and it was missing the avocado slices and tomatoes, the best parts! Because the enchilada sauces and salsa were so spicy, we were dying for a refill of our water which didn't come for 40 minutes at the end of our meal. And yes, we had to beg the waitress for more water. At best, the bathroom was damn clean. On my way back from the bathroom, I caught a glimpse of the kitchen. They were putting pink-looking chicken into plastic bags to use for the following day. read more

I've lived around the corner for ~8 days now...and I have already spent about $50 there, spread over a period of 3 visits. Here is what I have eaten so far: Chorizo Huaraches (2x) Chicken Soft Tacos (2x--one order was for my dog because it was her birthday. she left behind only a scrap of lettuce--the pieces that were not covered in cheese/sour cream) Chicken Tacquitos (1x because it was a special) Guacamole (2x) Roommate gets the quesadillas and swears by them.
