My husband and I were visiting Oregon for the first time because it was our Anniversary and we decided to do something we've never done before so we made the drive from Redding to Medford. We were looking for a place to eat and stumbled upon New Sakura, I was hopeful but also hesitant because all the Sushi experiences I've had in California since moving from Hawai'i have been mehhh. However, we ended up coming here and we definitely were not disappointed! The food was tasty and affordable. The service could use some work but it seemed as though the owner was serving everyone and there is a help wanted sign posted out front. Regardless, I observed how they interacted with their regulars and I loved that they treated them like family and knew them by name. I was really impressed and decided that they get a free pass on my average service for that. Here's what we ordered: Assorted Tempura - The batter was crunchy and the perfect texture and it was flavorful, the tempura sauce was perfect as well. Black Dragon Roll - My husband said this was his favorite thing we ordered because the flavor was nice. White Tiger Roll - I really liked this roll, it was creamy with a hint of heat. Chirashi Bowl - This is my go to, all the fish was pretty fresh except for the Ahi but this bowl was still great. I was very surprised at the size of the rolls and the portion sizes for everything else. Other pluses: ample parking and wheelchair accessible! We visited this sushi restaurant for the first time yesterday. We chose it because of the great reviews! The food was very fresh and the menu options were great. However, even though the plates were gorgeous they were extremely bland and flavorless. The female server we had was friendly and attentive but the male who would check in on us wouldn't respond and make us feel like we were an inconvenience. It was a real mood killer. We also didn't receive wasabi or ginger on any plate but one and once they took that plate away we didn't have any. We would eat here again if we got invited by someone but we will likely not be back otherwise. Like I said, the food and fish tasted VERY fresh. My Wife and I found a gem in Medford! The food was excellent. We started off with the garlic edamame and a half order of chicken katsu, flavor and katsu dip were on point. We ordered 3 rolls the deep fried Oregon roll (savory with some crunch), the Three Star roll (many different flavors and textures in each bite), and the Dynamite roll, this roll was baked, which we haven't had before, we loved it! The owners of this restaurant are delightful people. We have been enjoying their Ashland restaurants for many years (Little Tokyo and the former Mihamas) so we were happily surprised to walk in and discover that they had recently taken over New Sakura. I ordered sushi and fried calamari from there as well as a salad and a bento and a bagogi beef. Both the bento and bagogi was literally the same meal just packaged different and the sushi had an extremely strong smell and dirty taste and made ne sick soon after eating it Edit: I called them to let them know about the fact I got sick from their food and they tried telling me I was wrong about what I ordered and that it made me sick. They were rude and disrespectful with verry poor customer service and communication. I don't recommend eating here at all. Medford has a sushi, and it's phenomenal. Enter New Sakura... But the overlooked gem on the menu here is the chicken bento box. It's a masterpiece. Sushi, salad, teriyaki chicken, and either gyoza or tempura. Every component, down to the salad and dressing is worthy of 5 stars. I have become a regular here due to the lunch time allure of the chicken bento box. The portions, the quality and the price ($11.50 at the time of writing this) are hard to beat. Sometimes ratings can be based on the reviewer's perspective. I take in consider the whole package and rate it as a whole. SO, with that being said, I shall justify this 3 star rating review. First of all, Medford isn't a big city with lots to do or eat. Sure, it's a cool city, but in terms of comparing it to the bigger cities like Portland or even Eugene, it's meek in comparison. Sakura was near our hotel and one of the few establishments still open at this odd hour (2:30pm). The restaurant was fairly big and we were one of the three patrons in. Sakura does not promote or pretend like it's a high end Japanese restaurant. However, the prices seem to be on the above average for something like this. This was totally fine because, after all, this is Medford. We didn't want to splurge everything on this A-OK place so we just ordered the minimum necessary. An order of Vegetable Udon and an order of Unagi don. Also, one Asahi beer if you count that. By no means was the food bad, but it wasn't like delicious either. The waitress was nice and so was everyone else there. So yes, stop here for your Japanese fix. read more

Got the beef ramen it was not good. No flavor and the meat was bad. The egg was over cooked and basically rubber. They're sushi is just ok.

No one was here when I came in for lunch. That alone makes me a bit concerned. Second, the food pricing at their restaurant was a good bit more than the prices on here. I went in for a bento box that I was hoping to get but nope! Not for nearly $20. I live on the west coast so Im used to prices being higher. I also get inflation being a big factor in prices but this was pretty steep. What I did end up getting (tempura shrimp, egg rolls and salad) were ok. But not the best I've had and honestly not enough to justify the prices. If Im ever in town again Ill likely not revisiting. read more

Has the usual Japanese standards (Teryaki, Udon, Yakisoba) plus some more unique dishes (Korean spicy seafood salad), and a huge menu of American-style giant nori rolls with a dozen ingredients. Portions are substantial; try not to get carried away and order sushi, small plates and a bento (like I did), because you'll be taking some home. I wish I could buy their fish retail. It was very fresh and high-quality, better than I can buy at any store in Medford. Maybe they would sell me some excess? Also, the tempura is excellent. While overnighting in Medford we were looking for something other than typical travel food. We found this delightful sushi restaurant. Their miso soup appears to be made from scratch and it showed in taste and texture - much nicer than that which comes from a powered mix. We had tempura prawns and two of their speciality rolls.
