Haven't had sushi since I moved to Oregon. After looking at Yelp we decided to try this place. The food was great and the staff was very friendly. They were also very helpful when I couldn't decide which roll I wanted. I had the Salmon Fiesta Roll and it was so flavorful and fresh. My boyfriend had the heart attack and told me to try it and it was great as well. Besides the food being amazing the service was good. My wife and I had to come to Medford for business. She was craving sushi and so was I! LOL it had been a while. We decided to come here and see if the food was as good as people said it was. It most definitely was! I had one of the Bento bowls with beef and my wife had sushi and Poke Salad. The service was excellent the restaurant is very clean, and the food was wonderful. It's definitely a hole in the wall. When you first walk in this very unassuming building the first thing you notice is that all of the floors are covered with carpet and there is a pretty significant fishy odor that is not appealing to the nose at all. We were sat rather quickly and service was very prompt I will put that in this restaurants favor is that the service is excellent we were checked on very frequently by our waitress. We ordered the sashimi platinum which is 20 pieces of sashimi for $42. When it arrived it was very obvious if you have sashimi often that the tuna was old overall the selection was pretty poor of what the chefs choice was and really the only thing that the sashimi had going for it was the thicker cuts of fish but I was very unimpressed. Considering what the prices there are better places to eat in Medford or if you want decent sashimi. We also ordered rolls that we just got to go I was unwilling to stay any longer. Friends took me to lunch at Sakura Japanese restaurant while visiting Medford. Met at noon on a week day. Not crowded. Seated immediately, hostess very friendly, patient. Came by twice before we were ready to order. We ordered the unagi ( cooked eel) sushi, tofu bento box and tempura udon. I had the udon. The tempura came with one shrimp and four different vegetables. The dipping sauce had good flavor and the tempura had a nice light crispy batter. The udon has mushrooms, spinach and kamaboko (steamed fish cake). Broth very delicious as well. Just right for a cool Oregon fall day. Prices are very reasonable. My dish was $10. No tax in Oregon. The others enjoyed their meals as well. Clean plates. I would go again. I'm updating my review today to five stars because the folks here have absolutely done everything to make me happy with my dining experience. I've had a couple of the bento dishes but really come for the sushi. It's never been old fish- always tastes fresh and that's obviously so important for sushi. The restaurant is very clean and well kept. It's quite large actually but certainly doesn't look that way when you pull into the parking lot. The only thing that kinda makes me crazy is my spider roll that I pretty much order every time is never the same size. Sometimes it's huge and a 2 biter for each piece and then I've gotten these really small almost California roll size bites. I guess if the size of the soft shell crab varies then maybe this is why the size of the roll varies? It's the only reason why I haven't given 5 stars is because of inconsistency. If each of the sushi chefs rolled similarly then it wouldn't be so much of a big deal. All my pictures have spider rolls and every one is really different in I will visit them again, really because it's a comfortable little restaurant with really nice owners and employees who are taking good care of their customers. read more

I went to this place after my first choice was closed for 4th of July week. It was two of us. We walked in and were promptly seated but it took a waitress 10 minutes just to walk by quickly with two glasses and set them down as she continued to walk away. Five minutes later she came to our table and was about to ask something when she turned around and walked away. We waited for five more minutes and nobody came back to serve us anything. I went to Sakura because I saw other Yelp review that this place was Japanese-owned. But, this place was NOT Japanese-owned. Here's why: When we entered, I asked the Caucasian waitress if the sushi chef was Japanese, and she said yes. But the chef and other Asian waitresses communicated each other in Korean. He communicated to customers seated at the counter in Korean, too. We ordered sashimi plate. What they called "white tuna" was a type of fish called "escolar," which is banned in Japan for causing diarrhea. It's not banned in the US, so there's no problem serving escolar as white tuna. But I've not encountered any Japanese-owned restaurants that serve escolar. In Bay Area, there are many Japanese-owned restaurants, where you get albacore, if you order white tuna. A minor difference, but yet another sign that this restaurant is not Japanese-owned. And the chef didn't talk to a Japanese customer in Japanese. The food was good for Americanized Japanese restaurant. I think the chef is well trained for a non-Japanese person. Yet, this was hardly a Japanese-owned restaurant. Here and there, I saw signs of Korean influence in the "Japanese" food they serve. read more

My go to test for a sushi restaurant is their yellowtail nigiri style. It's so simple but hard to hide anything unsavory with it. Both times the yellowtail has been super fresh, sweet & a generous portion. We then ordered the Rockstar roll, spicy tuna, kani & cucumber, topped with fried lobster & drizzled with Sakura sauce - delicious! Also got the miso soup & a simple spicy salmon roll. Craving vegetable tempura and Japanese teriyaki we decided to try New Sakura for my husbands birthday. We never went to the original Sakura on riverside ave due to the location not having much "curb appeal" and I don't care to go to restaurants that are paired with karaoke lounges, just not my thing. My husband got the " heart attack" four jalapeños stuffed with a cream cheese spicy tuna crab mixture deep fried in tempura batter drizzled with spicy mayo,eel sauce topped off with deep fried rice noodles. Pretty presentation. He said for ten dollars they were very delicious but not filling, his second appetizer was smoke salmon nigiri which consisted of two small pieces of salmon 1/4"thick ,two inches long by one inch wide served over two tablespoons of rice with pickled ginger and wasabi paste on the side, Good quality sushi but not really worth the cost $5.50.His main course ,salmon bento box.He enjoyed that.The salmon bento was very fresh moist full flavored. His only complaint about the bento was the size of the california rolls, they were bite size. All in all he was very satisfied with his birthday dinner. I had the vegetable tempura appetizer for starters. Tempura was perfectly golden, not oily at all. The vegetables were tender not mushy. Tempura gets over cooked and tends to get mushy when veggies are cut too thick. Its apparent that the chef knows what he's doing. My main course ,chicken teriyaki rice entree. The chicken teriyaki was the best Ive had in years. Being a Japanese food lover I've tried all the Japanese restaurants in the Rogue Valley. My experiences have been tempura is either greasy , mushy ,soggy or scorched. The chicken often is dry , missing the wood charcoal hibachi flavor then drenched in teriyaki sauce to cover up dryness. At New Sakura My taste buds were jumping for joy!!! Finally a Japanese restaurant that can do my favorites to my liking! Good size portions too for the cost, $9.00 for the teriyaki breast, rice & salad. Can't comment on the salad, I'm not a fan of iceberg lettuce nor Japanese salad dressing. Our waitress was very charming , our food was served quickly not a long wait at all maybe 10 minutes for the appetizers ,meals followed right as we were done with first course. That also seemed to be the same at all the other tables in the restaurant. Fast turn over without the feeling of being rushed. We loved the food so much we just had to go back four days later and do it all over again! We brought our daughter and her family the second time and were not disappointed. Only difference ,they were busier the second visit with no effect on quality, quantity or service. I can't wait to go back again...I'm salivating writing this review!
