Mediocre Chinese food at centre of Toronto's Chinatown. Surprisingly busy, so I had high expectations. But im Chinese, and this was not to my standards. The infamous dry stir fry beef with flat noodles was just meh. Chinese pot soup was good. But all utensils and plates were sticky and gross. I decided to give it 3 stars not because of their food. tbh, the food was good, especially for Cantonese food, for example, the fried rice noodle was very tasty and full of wok hai. The service was also good, the waitress was nice and polite. so...what was exactly the problem? Well, it's a big restaurant and it had lots of people. It was already summer and it was really hot and uncomfortable inside. I was sweating and feeling dizzy after having sat for half an hour. I should've asked the waitress to turn on the air conditioner; however, it was our first time being there and I was worried about it was not a thing the waitress can decide and that we'll make her embarrassed. I decided not to do that and try to have lunch as fast as possible. I think I'll still go there in the future because it's pretty authentic. I'll update my review next time. read more

It's pretty good. Came here for dinner on a weekday and it was pretty busy. Ordered the Lemon Chicken (15) and Stir Fried String Beans w/ Minced Pork (12). The lemon chicken sauce was really heavy so it was filling and taste wise it was decent. The String Beans were really good, not that spicy and a good amount of that salty minced pork. I thought the food at New Sky was mid and honestly pretty basic in terms of the menu relative to the more authentic spots in the area. We started off with the chicken corn soup which was very good, but then the rest of the dishes (crispy ginger beef, sweet and sour chicken, chicken fried rice, salt and pepper shrimp, black bean beef sizzler) were all pretty average and nothing really stood out to me as something I'd come back for. New Sky is one of the legacy Chinese restaurants in downtown Chinatown that has a good combination of good food, decent prices, and best of all for me, great lunch specials! What is most unique about New Sky, is that it has a Peruvian influence with obviously someone from Peru involved in the restaurant's direction. There is even a separate menu, although it is in Spanish. I tried ordering something from the Peru menu but had a difficult time figuring out what to try and the Chinese server wasn't much help. I ended up ordering a dish that was a bit much for one person, and was meant to be part of a larger selection of dishes to be shared so I was disappointed. I'm not sure if there is a type of "lunch special" from the Peru menu. Their Chinese lunch specials are excellent! I love how they come with a choice of 3 different soups, with my fave being the egg drop soup with nice chunks of fresh mushrooms thrown in. The spring rolls are fantastic here as well. Super hot, right from the deep fryer, I could barely hold them sometimes and had to use a napkin to keep from burning my fingers. The taste of fabulous! The lunch specials are often so good, I end up devouring every little bit and then go home and can't really move well and want to take a nap. The beef dishes are incredible. We love this place. When the pandemic started easing up and we looked around several of our favourite places had closed or changed owners. Friends recommend this restaurant which has been around for a while. Fairly large with a family dynamic, friendly , it can get quite loud when the place is full, but in a good way as you can feel that people are happy and comfortable. I need to tell you Friday is better than Saturday for certain dishes we order, i.e the vegetables hot pot. So far we haven't not liked anything we've ordered, in other words the food is consistently great. Which is saying something as my family is picky, 1 vegan,1 pescatarian and me. They will adapt the dish if you need it gluten-free, for example. The service is great and they get to really know you as a customer. Try it you'll like it. read more

My cousin and I were looking for some authentic Chinese food and if you're looking for big portions and a classic Chinese restaurant vibe (with kind servers), then this is definitely a place to swing by. Although the vibe was great, the wait for the food was a little long (took around 35-40 minutes after ordering) and they mixed up our fried rice dish with a noodle one. To be fair, they fully admitted it was their mixup and asked if that was okay, and we said it was. Although the char siu didn't seem too fresh, the chow mein was pretty big (definitely had to grab a takeout box for the leftovers), it was also crispy and abundant in toppings. One thing I did love was the little fortune cookies at the end! Haven't had those in a long time! In this restaurant, some tables are really close...we had a chair only a foot from us. The table for two was butted against the wall and very small, so it was hard to eat comfortably. We ordered a double lobster with ginger and green onions, rice and watercress with garlic. The lobsters were a special. They were really small, and not as tasty as the larger lobsters we've eaten in other Chinese restaurants around town. We were not provided with anything to place the empty pieces of shell, extra napkins, nor anything to clean our hands. The watercress was not good, as it was so old it was bitter. On Spadina in Toronto, one can find some of the greatest foods in Chinatown. One night when my family and I were fully moved into our new condo by the lake, we celebrated with New Sky Restaurant, and what a celebration it was! From stellar service, to spectacular eats, New Sky did not fail to impress me at all! Already entering the restaurant, we could sense the ambiance of satisfaction as customers devoured their foods of Chinese delicacies. Despite how crowded it was, service had a table cleaned and ready for us within minutes. We took our seats, and like every standard restaurant, we were given hot tea and the menus to choose our dinner for the night. Once we had ordered our food and settled - we waited for perhaps 5-10 minutes when the waiter served us some hot soup, on the house. Have this soup with some red vinegar and/or pepper, and you'll enjoy this pleasant starter! And soon enough, with perfect timing for a hungry family, the food came out. The whole meal was served with white rice for the four of us as well: Stir Fried Vegetable in Tofu Sauce - a very pleasant dish Steamed Green Bass in Soy Sauce - it was prepared perfectly and the fish was extremely flaky (so it was good!) Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab in Spicy Salt - for a non-spicy lover like myself, this dish could only be eaten to an extent. However, it was a very delicious dish for the rest of the family, and for myself as well (up to my spicy limit!) Mussels in Black Bean Sauce - This dish was extremely tasty and savoury. The mussels were prepared in a way that it wasn't too chewy and the sauce was quite succulent. Definitely a recommendation! To end the night, we had some dessert, on the house - a nice bowl of Red Bean Soup for each of us to wash down our food. How many times have I been here? Maybe once or twice a year. Maybe 10-15 times since 2009. I always come here with Thai people, my family, friends and coworkers. It seems like a food spot for Thai people. FOOD (3 stars) They have many kinds of seafood such as lobster, crab, fish, clam, oyster, and scallop. I try to avoid having Chinese food because I usually eat Thai food 4-5 days a week already. Their food is quite similar, and many dishes are oily. However, many dishes are difficult to deny. We often order the same dishes almost every time. They were Live Lobsters in different kind of sauces, Fried rice with Crabs, Cold Chicken with Jelly Fish, Steamed Live Seabass, Snow Pea Leaves with King Mushrooms, etc. However, we also tried new items this time too. We had razor clams in Black Bean Sauce, Stuff Crab Claw and Sautéed Jumbo Shrimp with Szechuan Sauce. My today favorite was Cold Chicken! AMBIANCE (3 stars) They have many round tables. Each table is good for ten people. The restaurant could seat at least 100 people in their dining room. The best thing is they close very late on Sunday to Thursday at 2 am. and open until 5 am in the morning on Friday and Saturday. Favourite seafood restaurant in the Chinatown area. I remember this restaurant Pre-Covid and there will always be a huge line outside waiting for a table. Without a reservation, you'll be looking at a 45mins-1hr wait. Now you can just walk in.. it's sad to see family businesses take such a hit and you can see that. The taste of the food is still good but as a regular here, I can tell it's changed. New staff and probably new chef has changed this restaurant. Seafood is a good bet here - especially the clams in black bean sauce! The beef steak in black pepper is also very D.E.L.I.C.I.O.U.S. Their steamed fish is consistent here as well - normally very soft and cooked through perfectly. Definitely bring someone who can read and speak Chinese here if you want authentic Chinese food and an extended menu. read more

Very disappointed in the service and food. Went for Sunday lunch. I believe they were so understaffed on the dining floor and kitchen because I had to wait 1 hour for my first dish. Beef Chow Fun [2 of 5] Ho Fun was kind of old. And the beef was dry. Tripe with preserved vegetables [2 of 5] Tripe had smell to it. Not fresh or not washed cleanly. Taro stuffed on duck [3 of 5] Looked ok, however, I am not sure if the chef are suppose to leave the duck skin on and fry it. When it came out, the skin was the blackest part of the taro duck. It was a big grosh. I wish they removed it the skin and did not fry it. I don't think it is not a good idea to fry the fat duck skin. NOTE: Accepts all credit cards. read more

Our go-to Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. This restaurant has been around for a long time and serves good traditional Chinese (Cantonese style) food. The service is meh and the decor is dated but we keep coming back! For their delicious steamed crab rice wrapped in lotus leaf. Their stir fried green beans with pork was also pretty good. Meals always comes with house soup of random pork or chicken bones with carrots beans or random vegetables. I also recommend their sesame beef and seasonal fresh seafood. I haven't been here in many years, but we had a craving for snails and clams, so automatically thought Chinatown as nothing beats seafood cooked in black bean sauce. Our go-to place in the past has always been Sang's Great Seafood Restaurant, but remembered our last time there it wasn't that great, so came to New Sky since it was just up the street from Sang's. Since it was late around 11ish on a Thursday night, the place wasn't busy with only three tables occupied. Therefore, we got friendly, fast and efficient service like most of the Chinese restaurants in the area. Perhaps it helped that we spoke Cantonese as we always seem to get somewhat better service if we spoke Cantonese. I guess it helps some of the staff since their English can be very limited at times, but the server we had spoke English very well. He even was going back and forth speaking both Cantonese and English with us, even though we spoke Cantonese to him the whole time, but we were speaking English among ourselves. Server informed us they're open until 5am on Friday and Saturday night. Perhaps he assumed that both my friend and I were in our 20s. I have long passed my days when I was out until that early in the morning, but it was nice to know should I ever need a seafood fix at that time if I'm still awake, then I can come here. We ordered the sweet yam leaves which was cooked in a shrimp paste with lots of garlic. It was very tasty and the leaves were quite tender. I'm guessing not many people know about the sweet yam leaves as they'll probably opt for the sweat pea shoots, but try it next time if it's available in the Chinese restaurant you dine in. The snails and clams we ordered were cooked in a black bean sauce. The first few we had tasted good as it has been a long time since we had them, so the taste of nostalgia returned to us momentarily. That didn't last too long since we found the dishes to be too salty. Thankfully, we ordered a bowl of rice to share to absorb some of the saucy goodness. We also found the prices a bit higher than what we normally would pay, since usually three dishes would cost under $30, but for it to cost close to $40, we were a little surprised. Perhaps it was market prices for the items we ordered, we don't know as we just ordered without looking at the menu since we knew what we wanted when we arrived and just placed the order with the server. I guess next time we should look at the menu or ask for pricing to avoid any surprises, but when one needs to satisfy a craving, we simply do not care too much about prices as long as it tastes good. Perhaps we should learn to read Chinese because there's a special menu listed on the wall only in Chinese characters. read more
