Too good to share with pup!

Stopped in while taking the dog for a walk up Avenue. The Crispy beef and sweet sour soup was excellent and so was the service. Jonathon hooked my dog up with a water bowl (ate on the patio of course) and even a little beeper thing in case I needed immediate service. I dodnt need it though. Lunch was quick, delicious, and super value. Under $20 for two courses and a drink!

This place is well nestled in North York which is their second restaurant after the one in Toronto. Compared to a lot of Thai eateries, this place is affordable for consistent quality food. They are known for their Pad Thai. Competition is pretty stiff with many restaurants in very close proximity. You can get a great deal for a meal at this restaurant on Groupon but the portions are smaller.$$

Soup and spring rolls as starters

Got a Groupon for Satay on the Road. Decided to try it out. The decor is nice and comfortable. Groupon has its own menu which is not shown on the groupon site. But it was not a bad selection of choices. Soup had a strong lemongrass flavor, pad thai was super saucey, chilli chicken was not spicy enough and missing the char kind of taste. All these are not necessarily bad things.. as i know some people do like their pad thai super saucey... but it was not to my preference. customer service was good as the waitress told me afterwards that they could customize to your tastes.. so for anyone who doesnt like overly saucey pad thai. you can ask for it less saucey. autocorrect is telling me its saucy not saucey... whatever....

So I've been going to Satay on the Road since I was born and I'm not exaggerating when I say it has NEVER disappointed me or my family (which is why we've kept coming back for 25 years!!). Among MANY dishes that I love, Cashew nut chicken is my all time favourite and I plan to one day replicate the dish to perfection I've never wanted the recipe more!! The service has always been so friendly and it's such a beautiful place as well with wonderful Thai artwork. It is a delight to call satay on the road my go too restaurant. Everyone I have brought here to try it is amazed by how amazing the flavor is and the quality of their food. You won't want to go to another Thai restaurant again!!! I hope they are doing okay during COVID and I'm ordering take out as much as possible! I even keep containers of their cashew nut chicken in the freezer! Stocking up! Anyways, I hope this review encourages you to try it out, please please do!!

Lunch special - crispy beef and venerable broth soup

This is a mediocre Thai place in the area. Good if you work in the area and looking for a lunch. The staff are friendly. Parts of the patio are shaded. I had the seafood in blackbean sauce and it has lots of veggies which I liked but only a bit of seafood. It tasted okay. The spicy sweet and sour soup was tasty. The spring roll was mediocre. My friend had the crispy beef special and it tasted a bit sweet and the pieces of beef were a bit tough. He usually gets the Manchurian lunch special - and he says that is better. He also had an iced tea which he said was sweetened with a bit of honey. Our total bill came to $~25 + tip Would I come here again? Only with work colleagues as it is convenient. Would I get take out? No

Came here with some colleauges for retirement party due to receiving a coupon for 25%. Unfortunately the restaurant owner had said that they could not accommodate our coupon but as an apology will compensate us with a few free appetizers. He gave us generous plate of spring rolls and Icecream as dessert. The food was so flavourful with generous servings. Environment was clean and service was excellent.

Sambal fish in chili paste. Not spicy at all.

The staff were extremely nice and quick with their service. The restaurant was very long and had a surprising amount of tables with lots of Thai decor. We ordered the following: Green curry with brown rice 7/10 - chose tofu as protein and it was very good, flavourful coconut curry with lots of vegetables - $18 Khao Soi 9/10 - Egg noodles with beef and a golden coconut curry, very flavourful and filled with lots of onions and green + red peppers. Very tasty and presentation was on point - $21 Thai iced tea 7/10 - a little too sweet for my liking but still pretty good - $4.5 Golden sweet potato fritters 8/10 - loved the texture for this, almost like fries but fright in a light batter. Came with sweet and sour dipper sauce too - $14 Overall I thought the food was very good, and portion sizes were good as well, we ended up taking home most of the sweet potato fritters because we were too full to finish! total spent was about $75 after tax and tips

A reservation is highly recommended because there are only a limited amount of massage bookings. The appointment started off upstairs at the spa. The chairs are placed in a lounge with 5-6 other chairs. Overall, a mix of relaxed and painful massage (in a good way!). Next, we went downstairs to the restaurant for lunch. The service was speedy and friendly. The mango salad and crispy shrimp were both really good. As was the pad thai and stir fry spaghetti. The coconut ice cream wasn't very good, and sadly we weren't able to sub it with another dessert. Also got the super cute mango juice that came with some boba balls and bear shaped ice. Overall, it's a great experience and value for $50. The food seems authentic and decent portions for the cost. Their regular menu also looks very enticing so I will definitely want to come back and try it!

It was mildly spicy & crispy & tasty, though slightly hard (it would be better if it were slightly moister). Spicy clams were pretty good. We asked for it to be less spicy & it was below mild spiciness. The sauce was rich & creamy with some complexity. Deep fried holy basil on top added a nice texture. Mackerel fried rice had a good smoky wok flavour & was mildly spicy. There was a lot of egg (for the GTA) & there were crispy bits of fish inside. The fried fish was on the dry side but quite tasty. The lime on the side was very dry.

I had the tom yum risotto the flavours were good but it was really weird to me how they used jasmine rice. It literally reminded me of a white bowl of rice mixed with sauce... I also got the chicken pad thai. It's not the authentic pad thai you would expect - more ketchup side but I didn't mind it. The portions were outrageously small for $20 though. The menu is quite extensive but after asking for some advice and fan favourites, I ended up with the Tom yum seafood "risotto" and the hubs got the Green curry baked cheese with chicken cutlet. First off, the baked curry was okay... not a lot of green curry sauce. The chicken was fine. Not really a dish that wow'd us too much. The Tom Yum Seafood risotto was very tasty and flavourful. I was told it was a fan favourite so I was very intrigued. Sadly, upon arrival, it could have used a better presentation - they put it on a big flat plate so it looked...kinda gross. Secondly, they didn't use Arborio rice. I get that that would've taken a lot longer to make but using regular rice was a disappointment. But after a taste, I was definitely wow'd by the flavour. I quite enjoyed it, despite the rice. Not sure we're going to be in a hurry to come back but it's worth a try!

I reserved a month in advance for my husband and I to eat at 6:00, and the restaurant steadily filled up during the course of our dinner. This, on a Monday night, is surprising, and a testimony to Pai's popularity. The interior of the restaurant is quite beautiful and welcoming, betraying its somewhat sketchy location above the Rose and Crown Pub. Sure enough, we were not disappointed by our meal. We started with some deep fried tofu bites, and these were really crispy and a delicious way to prepare tofu. It was a perfect, light appetizer. Then, on to the main course: My husband ordered Chicken Pad See Ew, and it had the thickest noodles that I'd ever seen in this dish. I wasn't sure what to expect! I tried a bite, and it was so tasty, with a variety of textures and a slightly smoky flavour. The thick noodles were beautifully cooked and complemented the dish very well. To my surprise, it was one of the better renditions of Pad See Ew (my usual go-to at Thai restaurants) that I've tried. I ordered the Khao Soi, with both shrimp and tofu (they kindly obliged, with an extra charge for the shrimp). This was unlike anything I'd ever seen, and its presentation was spectacular, with it's golden curry sauce and plume of fried egg noodles. My first several bites were superb: the fragrant, coconut flavored curry sauce perfectly complemented the noodles, shrimp and particularly the toful. On another occasion, I think that I would just order the tofu. Eventually, I found the richness of the sauce too have overwhelmed me, and I took the rest home. With its really spectacular amount of coconut curry sauce, it was excellent the next day with some additional tofu and steamed rice. All in all, very satisfactory, and our waiter was really pleasant and informative about the food. Was it worth reserving a month in advance? I'd say yes, it was, as Pai presents an excellent interpretation of Thai food, and the presentation of the the Khao Soi alone was worth the wait! Not to mention, we had a whole meal the next day from the leftovers! We will come back when we are in the area, if we can get in!!
