I'm still pretty new to exploring different food spots, so I was excited to stop by New Town Bakery & Restaurant and try a few things. I went with the steamed buns and a couple of the bakery items, and everything looked so tempting that it was honestly hard to choose. The buns were comforting and satisfying, especially paired with a warm drink. The service was friendly and the staff kept things moving even though the place was fairly busy. It has a very casual, local feel, which I actually enjoyed. The dining area can get a little lively and noisy, but I think that's part of the experience here. Overall, a nice little stop if you're exploring Vancouver and want something casual and comforting. I'm still learning my way around Cantonese food, but this was a fun introduction. Great place for Dim Sum and comfort food. Service was polite and friendly. Like any Chinese style restaurant it was noisy but comfortable. We ordered Chicken and Chinese Mushroom Congee , Vietnamese spring rolls, turnip cake, gyoza, steamed rice cake. For drinks I had Mais con Hielo, and my wife got lemon iced tea. Get all your baos and buns here! Nice and fresh and cash only. You can either dine in or do takeout but be aware that the process is different for both. For dine in, you get seated and order and will be served tea. Prices are ever so slightly higher but not enough to really notice. Takeout, you order at the front and off you go. Anyway, I'm a huge fan of steamed bbq pork buns so imagine my absolute adoration when we got a huge steamed bbq pork bun here. It's the size of my face. Fluffy bun and savory bbq pork without the red food coloring, what more could you want? Mango pudding was also a nice touch. Refreshing and not too sweet so it's a great dessert to finish off whatever meal you were having or just as a standalone snack. New Town Bakery is one of those Chinatown staples that feels like a rite of passage in Vancouver. We headed there for breakfast, excited for pastries and a classic bakery experience, and decided to dine in. Once we sat down and were handed the full menu, though, I had a brief moment of panic. The menu is huuuge and varied, plus none of the items I had mentally planned on ordering were on there. We pivoted and ordered pork siu mai, congee, look fun noodles, and a few steamed buns (they're especially known for those). The congee, noodles, and siu mai were all fine--very standard, not particularly memorable. In fairness, they weren't what I came for in the first place, so that probably shaped my expectations. The real standouts were the pork asado siopao and the chicken deluxe (bola bola). Both have Filipino roots, and the siopao especially brought a comforting sense of familiarity--soft, fluffy, and filled with that sweet-savory pork that felt like home. Those alone made the visit worthwhile. They actually have quite a few other Filipino influenced items like hopia and puto which was surprising. Ironically, it was only after we left that I noticed the sign on the window highlighting their most popular items--exactly what first-timers should probably stick to. I had ordered a few pastries to go with the intention of trying them later... and then completely forgot about them, which I'm still a little sad about. Overall, it was a good visit with a clear lesson learned: go in with a game plan and order the hits. It's a beloved Vancouver institution for a reason, and I'd definitely recommend stopping by--just know it's cash only and do a little pre-order research so you can make the most of it. Seemed like a must try Chinatown classic when I was researching Vancouver spots. Chinese breakfast in Vancouver, B.C., Canada... My niece and I were looking for a place to eat and found New Town Bakery & Restaurant. Metered street parking was not free on a Sunday in Chinatown like in Honolulu. My niece reminded me that this is not even the USA... LOL! She figured out the parking because it was a pay with credit card type of meter. Note: I had asked about free parking. Employees at the front said that it's 20 minutes away... It was a bit drizzly, so hot congee (jook) - with Thousand Year Egg - and a steamed shrimp noodle roll sounded good to me! It was delicious, warming, and filling! Service was efficient - like a typical Chinese establishment. Haha! We were reminded that it was a cash only place. That's fine for me. My niece (younger generation) didn't have much cash on her... October 25, 2025 - The next place we tried in Vancouver was also in Chinatown and just a few places down from Chinatown BBQ. New Town Bakery was also highly recommend by the people of the internet. I got the chicken Deluxe bun, egg tart and Wintermelon pastry. All the food was good. The meat stuffing for the bun was sufficient and filling. Discovered something surprising today--I never realized those steamed buns have been fixtured above New Town Bakery's awnings....for years. The area has a definite streetwise vibe that makes quick visits appealing, and honestly, it's easy to miss the quirky charm if you're always rushing in and out. We finally dined in. This place was recommended to me from a woman I met on my plane ride to Vancouver. She said they are famous for their bao buns and boy were they delicious! It's soft, succulent meat, ratio between lean meat and fats are balanced, sauce is just sweet and tangy, not overwhelming. I give the crown to New Town Bakery in Chinatown, BC. Mei Li Wah in Chinatown NYC used to be my numero uno spot to get roasted/pineapple pork buns. Although its not apple to apple comparison, I solely compared the inside taste of toppings that were similarly used between these buns/bread. This is a good authentic aging Kong style bakery and restaurant/cafe. It's now one of our favorites for Vancouver! In the cafe we order Beef Chow fun (with Hong Kong cold and sweetened milk tea not in the photo for the lunch special), wonton soup (with most wontons consumed already), ha gow (shrimp dumpling). All three dishes are yummy, but I have to say I loved the broth that came with the wontons - a simple item done well. You can taste the chicken used to make it, and it's on the salty side as it's as an accompaniment to the wontons. After we ate, we paid and went to the front to buy some baked goods.
