The food is above average and delicious, and they have many menu options for you to choose from. As soon as you walk in you're smacked in the face with their bakery section and the many customers perusing and lining up for their pastry purchases. Once seated we went for the large portion of their famous talked about wok fried beef flat noodles. My oh my. The "wok hei" was strong and flavorful. Permeating every delicious chopstick mouthful. When I was young, I went the Boss regularly when my family did grocery shopping in Chinatown. I don't go often anymore, but when I do, it's always a bit nostalgic. What I tried: - HK Milk Tea: Very good. Sometimes I go for bubble tea, so when I drink a proper HK Milk Tea like this one, I forgot how the milk tea is so much more intense and the texture is much thicker. - Ham & Macaroni Noodle in Soup: OK. For those who are familiar with the dish, it's exactly what it sounds like. It's basic comfort food. Nothing fancy. - Breakfast Set Pineapple Bun: Good. The "pineapple" topping is a bit sweeter than most, which I liked. - Breakfast Set Eggs and European Weiner: OK. Again it's nostalgic comfort food. - Breakfast Set Beef Brisket and Rice Noodle Soup: OK. It came out fast. Brisket was generally OK, but there were a couple of dry pieces. Noodles were too soft and broke very easily. This place is very similar to other HK Cafes. The place is relatively clean, service is quick (and friendlier than I expected), the food is cheap and comes out fast. To keep overhead costs low, they don't have a website and they take cash and debit only (no credit cards). As far as HK Cafe's go, I think it's comparable to any of them. We made a pit stop at this bakery after exploring downtown and Chinatown - mostly to give the kids a break from walking! It was a great decision because we found some real treats. We tried a few things, starting with the custard egg tarts. They were wonderfully soft and fresh, though they do tend to fall apart easily, so be gentle! We also got a couple of steamed buns: one with BBQ pork and another with pork and veggies. Both were delicious, with tasty fillings and perfectly steamed exteriors. The caramel pudding was a nice addition too. A quick note on payment: they don't accept credit cards, but they do take Visa debit, which is handy. If you're paying with US dollars, they accept them but use their own exchange rate. Definitely worth a visit for some yummy baked goods! read more

I'm not sure what it is but I always love coming here for one dish. It's their yang chow fried rice. The rice is fluffy, there's lot of shrimp and the Chinese sausage is plentiful. Every time I come here, it never disappoints! We also had their beef fried noodles. Lots of bean sprout and not too oily. A very good dish! And we finally had their satay beef soup noodles. This was the third bakery that I visited during my time in Vancouver for my trip and it was amazing! I visited the bakery yesterday to get a snack and it was pretty quiet inside. Also, the service was really good when I was getting my items. The first item that I got was the Pineapple Barbeque Pork Bun which was not too sweet or salty, had a good texture, and had juicy meat inside. The next item that I got was the Barbeque Pork Bun which was soft, fluffy, and had tender meat inside. The third item that I got was the Coconut Bun which had the perfect amount of coconut, was not too sweet, and had a soft, fluffy texture. Singapore noodles - 2 people in the group ordered it and all agreed it was very on point. Lunch with my family on January 1, 2020 and was busy, as expected. We waited 20 minutes for a table. There is no waiting area, the bakery is the waiting area. There was only 1 chair which was already occupied. Couldn't find a seat for mom elderly mom. Bakery was busy while people weaved around those waiting for a table. There are lots of Hong Kong style restaurants in Vancouver. I would rate this location as 3 out of 5 for food and drink quality. A bit greasier all around. My lemon iced tea was a bit off. The wontons in the wonton noodle soup was small. The service was good as the staff were all busy and nonstop. Attentive in refilling tea and food arrived quickly. I've been here twice in the last six weeks in the 2pm hour, on a weekend and a weekday, and the place was still busy, with not too many free tables/booths. The food is good and affordable, when food in the neighbourhood has increased in price. The staff are also friendly and welcoming, which is a plus. As we got seated to our table this is the one thing... That I always like to order from the menu and that would be no other than the Mince Beef w/ Raw Egg over steam rice!!! The Boss is my second favourite Hong Kong diner in Chinatown. My favourite is of course Goldstone... The Boss is probably a bit cleaner and newer but it lacks the character of Goldstone. The food is pretty standard for a HK diner. Nothing stands out as especially good or especially bad. I had the spaghetti with beef. It was ok... If I have to complain I'd say a bit too much sauce. My g/f had the breakfast set... eggs, ham, and a noodle soup. Both were ok... Service is ok. The women at Goldstone are friendlier to us but that's probably cuz we go there a lot! If we come to the Boss we usually come here cuz Goldstone is closed (Tuesdays). It's a nice number 2! read more

The fact that they have a Black Forest Buttercream Cake and a Black Forest Sponge Cake is confusing (usually there is just the Black Forest Cake; I had never heard of Black Forest Buttercream). It was misleading for The Boss Bakery, which has the same owner as Maxim's Bakery, to name it as Black Forest Buttercream Cake because Black Forest has cherries (I saw the absence of cherries in the buttercream cake only when I saw the slices of both cakes in the fridge). The chestnut (which was mixed with cream) in the chestnut roll was overly sweet, and the taste of prune for the prune cakes was not strong because there were only bits of prunes inside (mostly brown sugar taste). When we asked the server how long will the cake last, she said people usually eat it in a couple of days. Does that means the cake was old or she just did not know its expiry date? read more

This place still offers affordable lunches for $11taxed....with a drink of your choice! Who does that these days? Isn't that crazy? Well they do and the food is decent quality and the size isn't shrunk like most of the surrounding restaurants during covid. I can't hold that against them, times are tough but my money goes further at The Boss so I keep coming back. If I'm not that hungry my take out lunch order becomes part dinner. There's about 10items as lunch special, every two weeks it's changed. There's total of 5specials menus that get rotated. Right now with Take Out only rules by the government all 5 menus are available! If you come in to order it'll take about 15mins. You can always call in first. Service is prompt staff are attentive. There' also the pastries, all decent size (unlike Maxim which are 1/3smaller). They even have century egg and salty egg yolk pastries- items that some bakeries don't make. For decent pastries at a decent price try the Boss on Main st. Or for really good fruit cocktail cakes come here! The cakes here are some of the best and are perfect for celebrating an occassion. For a long time they were the cheapest too, but now they are fair priced but oh so worth it! The great thing about this bakery is that they open fairly early. Usually on the way to work I can grab a cake or a box of pastries for the office or for an occasion afterwards. The food was not bad. Been here couple times and I would say the deal is the all day breakfast A + B. The A includes Egg, ham and bun. B includes a noodle and chicken. If you get A it cost $6.95 and plus $2 you get B. The best part about this place is everything on the menu can be substitute for something else. The breakfast came with tea or coffee. So that's pretty good. Overall you can't expect too much from this place. Its a Chinese HK style café place. Prices are not bad. Only fall back is parking. Dining here you do get $1 off parking but that doesn't cover your entire parking fee. We parked for 1hr and 15 mins and the parking lots place rounded it to the closes half hour. It costed $2.50 for parking less $1 and parking came to $1.50. Most places if you dine here its free parking. So not cool. Also there are lots of Chinese café style in Vancouver. My family came across this bakery and cafe while we were looking for a good place to eat in Chinatown. We were seated right away, and the menu looked quite promising. I ordered the mini baked pork chop rice with iced lemon tea. I have to say that the rice was pretty good. The sauce was a little too sweet for my liking, but overall it was a pretty good dish. I guess I expected it to be very small since it was labeled "mini", but I still wasn't able to finish it. Also, the rice was not just plain white rice but was flavored and had bits of eggs in it, which was nice. Also, the pork chop was fried, too! The lemon iced tea was good - a bit better than the "standard" lemon iced tea. My sister ordered soy sauce chicken wings. They said we had to wait fifteen minutes, but that wasn't a problem. The wings were quite tasty. Again, I thought it was a little too sweet, but she really enjoyed them. My mom ordered plain french toast; however, after she cut into them, she saw that there was an orange center. She switched it for the regular plain french toast, which made me sad because I really wanted to try that filling! The french toast was pretty delicious. It was fried nicely, but wasn't too oily. My dad tried their mini black pepper steak with rice. The steak was tender, and the portion they gave us was quite generous. And lastly, the minced meat porridge came towards the end of the meal, so all of us were quite full. The porridge's minced meat definitely wasn't what I expected. I think the meat chunks were bigger than I thought. But, the porridge tasted quite nice overall. There was constant traffic flowing into and out of the cafe. I thought it was a pretty decent meal, especially in Chinatown. The waitresses weren't very nice or pleasant, but the man who worked there made up for that. When I come to Chinatown, usually one of the things I am coming down here for is some HK style breakfast (many Cantonese friends of mine would call it the A-B meal, I will get to that in a second.) There are only two places that I will actually enter for some decent food, here and Maxim's around the corner. Both are pretty much the same in terms of what they serve, the only difference is location, and the fact I don't have to walk up a flight of stairs to the restaurant portion of this bakery. Out of all the 'local' Chinese bakeries, I will give 'The Boss' credit for having one of the better mooncakes (oh... autumn moon festival is around the corner) yet I have become a mooncake snob lately and have been feasting on some fine ones from across the Pacific Ocean... no matter. Trying their selection of buns lately, BBQ pork bun, pineapple bun, egg tart, it feels they have slipped in quality and taste. They don't have that 'fluff' as they used to. As for the "A-B" meal... it's a breakfast terminology, as breakfast served at these places consist of a selection of A, B, or A + B. A usually is tea or coffee with eggs, bacon and a bun. The B is usually some heavily weighted dish to go along with your eggs, like a bowl of rice vermicelli served with pickled cabbage and pork, in soup, or something on those lines. On this day I ordered just the A, which got me eggs, some mystery sausage that was cut into cute little pieces, and a pineapple bun on the side. My drink, HK milk tea. The eggs seemed a little on the over oily side, and the sausage was generic, not as generic as a package of no-name sausage in a 12 pack you buy at Superstore, but it was what it was. The pineapple bun, well, the top was crumbling quite quickly after my first bite and was probably the best part of this meal, including the drink of course. Right now, I would suggest Maxim over 'The Boss', which means I will have to go there again, then come back to see if they decided to improve.. or keep it as is! read more

Whenever I go to The Boss cafes the three dishes that alwayd call out to me are Club Spaghetti + Club Sandwich + Baked Pork Loin Fried Rice, especially the club sandwich! Something about those mouthwatering layers of ground chicken patty, steak and ham just magnifies this sandwich to a whole new level! This is the mother of all sandwich...the sandwich god in my honest opinion! With all restaurants struggling these days The Boss is one of the many restaurants I really can't bare to lose. It brings back so many childhood memories where I'm sure many who use to lunch there after chinese school or after weekly grocery trips in Chinatown with their grandparents or parents can heavily relate to. One day soon we can sit back in those chunky vinyl booths and admire the vintage stain glasses ladies decor (IYKYK) as we indulge on some Hong Kong classics! Normally you don't expect too much from the "cheap" $6 menu, but the food was actually quite bland. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed. But it looks like they've renovated the place in recent years, and the washroom is clean. It's worth checking out, but don't have high expectations. I ordered two dishes to take away. Portuguese Chicken and rice. B-7. Baked Portuguese Chicken with rice and 31- Shanghai Chow Mein. Both were bland, flavourless, and like eating goo. The noodles had no flavour and tasted of rancid oil. Old oil recycled? No flavour, no herbs or spices or onion or garlic. The chicken was swimming in tasteless gravy. This place is a classic! It's been around for decades! My dad even ate here when he immigrated to Canada 35 years ago! It's a HK Cafe in the back, with a bakery at the front! Their pastries are great, especially their cakes! You can even order one for your birthday or special events! I love their Daily Lunch and Afternoon specials! They're soo cheap, well portioned, and filling! And most importantly, tasty haha! They have all your standard HK cafe fare! Best part is that you can go to the front and pick out a dessert to eat after your meal hehe! Love it here! Before we discovered the Richmond area, we used to come to Chinatown to get our fix on HK styled food, specifically the HK milk tea. Now what I remember most and best about this place is the "bor low yao" - a warm pineapple bun slice in half horizontally w/ a thick slab of butter in between. The warm bun softly melts the butter and each bite is absolutely sinful...I can still remember it after all these years. The place has aged and the quality has gone downhill. Let's face it. The Chinese bakeries in Seattle are no match for the ones in Vancouver and Richmond. Rating the ones in Seattle is pretty much rating them on a curve. A 4 star bakery in Seattle, is more like a 2 or 3 in Vancouver, which I perhaps unfairly have higher standards for. The Boss Bakery is fairly known in Seattle because a selection of their products are sold in the Seattle area at numerous Chinese grocers. Even Uwajimaya carries them. Although they are imported from up north and have travelled some distance, they are still on par with the ones found in the Seattle bakeries. So logically, if you go to the source which I did, my hypothesis would be that the baked goods would taste even better if I bought them at the actual storefront. As I concluded, I was indeed right. The stuff here is great. The selection which interestingly looks similar to the Maxim's nearby, is pretty standard for a Vancouver Chinese bakery, but you will notice the pricing here is cheaper than in Seattle. For instance, a slice of their cakes actually costs less than a BBQ pork bun in Seattle. Unreal. And even so, that does not mean the quality is bad. Somehow it is better. The mango sponge cake is so good. Reminds me of Japanese castella cake except with a coating of mango puree in the small openings. I have not visited a Vancouver/Richmond Chinese bakery I did not like thus far. They don't call it The Boss for nothing you know. read more

When I finally got pork chop after 30 minutes, it was not even proper "pork chop". We usually order "baked" food because it is less in unhealthy fat than fried or deep fried food. This restaurant's interpretation of "baked" and/or "pork chop" is not the same as ours. Their "pork chop" was actually just reheated pork cutlet (deep fried) covered in tomato sauce. In addition, patrons at this restaurant are really loud. They are talking really loud and all sound like they are arguing. Also I can hear their chewing sound and it irritates shit out of me. The Boss Bakery shows all signs of being a great bakery, from the scent wafting out onto the street, to the hoards of people coming in and out. Never mind that at 2:00 in the afternoon, many of the items were sold out. Boss Bakery sells the ubiquitous buns filled with all sorts of goodness, from meat to sweet and everything in between, as well as an assortment of other treats. I had to do a double take on the prices...70 cents for a BBQ pork bun?! Three coconut buns for $1.20?! I didn't realize it was possible to purchase food, GOOD food, at these astronomically cheap prices but Chinatown always surprises. The coconut buns are definitely tasty and for that price, anyone can treat themselves to a few delicate, light and sweet (or savoury) buns! read more
