I love Newk's but this one isn't my favorite! I grew up eating Newks and I always loved getting the delicious pepperoni pizza and their famous News Q sandwich! For some reason this one doesn't hit the spot like the ones back home did. The inside is nice! It's clean most of the time that I've gone and the staff is always nice. The food is still pretty good so I won't stop visiting this one! I normally just get it to go when I have a taste for some Newk's Q sauce (so good.) Recently I've been getting the Newks Q pizza without the jalapeños and a chicken Caesar salad! Sometimes I'll get the potato soup which is really good. I usually go to this place for the healthy option for the lunch. I went in for shrimp and avocado salad to go. I got home and there was no avocado. Disappointed. Most of the time the service is good but this visit the cashier didn't even gave me a choice of dressing for the salad and no receipt. Newks is a little further away for a quick lunch for me, but a friend wanted to go there yesterday for lunch, so off we went. I asked to go around 11:30, in order to avoid the crowds. And I'm so glad we got there when we did! By noon, the line was outside of the restaurant! I picked the bowl of soup (Corn and crab Chowder) and half of a Caesar salad. We got our drinks and found a place to sit and waited for our food to arrive. After 5 minutes, my bowl of soup came out. My salad still wasn't there, and neither was my friend's sandwich/soup. It was another TEN minutes before her soup and salad came out, and then another FIVE before my salad came out. The caesar salad is pretty simple (salad, cheese, croutons, and dressing) so I'm not sure why it took so long. The problem was that I didn't want to be rude and eat my soup in front of my friend while she had nothing to eat (for 10 minutes), so by the time her food came out, mine was cold. It was very disorganized and also not conducive for turning tables over quickly on the busiest day/time of day. Our office frequently orders Newks for catering, but I don't think I'll make another trip over for a personal lunch. read more

Never really tried Newk's until one of my family members wanted to try them out, so I just went along. They offer more than just sandwich which I thought that what Newk's was all about since there's selection of pizza, soup, salad and other choices to choose from. I ended up getting just a pepperoni pizza and the first bite took me away in a good way because it tasted so authentic and fresh. What I also like is the complimentary condiments they have for your convenient to use on your food. The dessert display look good, but are a little pricey for my budget. read more

Service is the biggest issue at this location. Incredibly slow, does not work as a lunch time spot. First off, it took 25 minutes to get a club sandwich AFTER lunch rush. It is beyond me why they have 4 people working the registers (with no line to order), yet only two people actually preparing the food. What a mess. You see a ton of employees inside the restaurant, but the majority are hanging out with other employees or hanging out with customers. The tables are dirty, most tables have plates piled up. Considering the proximity to the hospital you would think there would be an understanding that customers are in a rush to get something to eat quickly for lunch and go, yet you see nearly 90% of the workers socializing rather than helping get orders out in a timely manner. A nice cherry on top was not one, but both bathrooms being "out of order". I'm not sure what management is doing, but this location needs significant improvement. read more

I am always going to lunch with a former co-worker. Today was actually a supervisor. That's a plus to lasting relationships, food. On this trip, I knew I wanted the Half Newk's Q which I normally pair up with the pasta salad. My former supervisor convinced me to try the Cup of Tomato Basil and now I am in love. It was crowded but we managed to find a booth and our food didn't take long to arrive. She had the Spicy Chicken Pizza and a cup of Tomato Basil soup. When I hear Newk's, I have a rather bland image in my head of a cold sandwich. However, the last few times I have had Newk's I have ordered everything but that, and the boring sandwich is slowly going away. Their personal pizzas are huge! Their homemade five layered red velvet cake is perfect for those who can't handle too much sugar. So light, and had just the right amount of icing, and not once did I feel sick from sugar overload! To be honest, it had way too much black pepper in the sandwich! It was very hard for me to eat and finish. I tried getting my boyfriend to finish it for me but it was hard to eat for him as well. A 16 ounce bowl of soup and a side salad of your choice. They have about four daily soup specials to pick from. The lobster and crab bisque is one of my favorites. I like to pair it with the simply salad. The simply salad comes with cucumbers, tomatoes, cheese, croutons, tossed in your choice of salad dressing. The sherry vinaigrette is my go to. Their Caesar salad is also delicious. In the middle of the restaurant they have complimentary items to add to your meal. Croutons, pickles, peppers, capers, cheese, bread sticks etc. I really enjoy this feature, it allows your to customize your meal with extras that you love. If you are in a hurry they have prepared salads and sandwiches in their fridge off to the side of the register that you can just grab and go. The staff is completely unorganized. And with the exception of a very helpful staff member working the registers, the rest were ambling around doing very little. She was drowning in questions and frustration from customers. I went in yesterday to pick up an order that I placed online and had to wait an additional 20 minutes before I finally asked for the status. they looked through a stack of orders that was rolled up sitting on the counter. They were very few people in the restaurant and in the 20 minutes I was there, multiple bags of orders sat ready on the counter but were never placed in the pickup rack. We came here for lunch the other day. It was a typical busy UAB lunch crowd. We had quick service. From the time we ordered to the time we got our food was only 10 minutes. I had the Veggie sandwich with portobello mushroom and goat cheese. The portobello mushroom was flavored so well it almost tasted like a steak. Better than some steaks i've had, honestly. The goat cheese adds a savory aspect to this sandwich that is very unexpected. You wouldn't think a veggie sandwich is this good but it is. The portion size is very filling too. To my surprise it was very busy and bustling despite downtown being a bit dead on the weekends. I am a creature of habit when it comes to Newks and got the Greek salad with chicken. Hell yeah still tastes like Athens. The size is very generous so you get what you pay for. Ingredients are fresh, wholesome and simply burst with flavour which is complemented by a tangy Greek dressing. She told us they would have to serve our salads in to go boxes which didn't make sense but we said ok.
