Half portobello veggie and half tomato soup

Time after time, when I want a quick, reliable dinner, I always fall back on Newk's Eatery. Their staff is always very genuine and kind, and is always willing to make accommodations. In addition, I usually pay with Blazerbucks, which can sometimes be tedious; however, the staff at Newk's is always genuine and never upset over the payment. Located near the hospital, Newk's offers a comforting environment and reminds me of Jason's Deli, which was a staple in my childhood. Food here is always consistent. I recommend eating in the restaurant instead of ordering takeout. My order is usually the half-portobello veggie sandwich and tomato soup, but sometimes, when I order to-go, as I did last night, the bottom of the bread is a bit soggy, which is to be expected since it has pesto on the bottom. When I order in person, I find that the sandwiches are a bit better and less soggy, regardless of what I order. I am also a collector of Newk's cups and love that they offer a sustainable choice of reusable cups. I wish they used cardboard instead of plastic for takeout containers, but for a large chain, they still make an effort with reusable options.

Stopped by here for dessert recently. Guy who waited on me wasn't the friendliest. Picked up the strawberry slice from the cooler area that had the cakes and chicken salad. Told him I didn't need a bag since I was eating inside, yet found out that despite saying that, he didn't give me any utensils and I spent the next few minutes looking for them around the corner. After I didn't find them, I asked another worker who seemed as if she was bothered where were the utensils, then asked me if I was going to eat inside. I responded yes and she walked back to the counter to get one. Even if I were to take it out, can I still get a fork yall? Geesh! Just on these interactions alone make me skeptical about returning for food. The restaurant has a few onsite parking spots, but we parked in a deck since we were visiting another restaurant for food and walked down to Newks. Oh and the cake was ok. Nothing to write home about. A solid 2.5 star experience overall.

I have had Newk's before but it was always a catered event and it left me impressed. I have wanted to visit and i finally did. I decided to go all in for the Steak "Q" Sandwich and I was happy that I did. It was really good but the boba punch was the best. It's been a while since I had Boba and the burst of flavor from the balls was entertaining. The place is easy to access with parking in the rear. Service was fast and the food was hot. I do recommend this place. It does have an open sunlight presence that adds to the environment.

Do you like waiting half an hour curbside for a cold sandwich you ordered online? Perfect!

Today I had the pepperoni pizza. It was okay. The crust was not hard enough. It was kind of soggy. Had better before from here.

Each time I go it smells like burning bread! I get something quick to prepare to avoid smelling like "burned food"!

I like that you can get either a half or a whole pressed sandwich! Very casual atmosphere. Everything was clean. If they're busy, you may have ~10 minute wait, but not too bad.

While none of them have tasted quite as good since then (something about working up an appetite on the beach?), we still really enjoy a rare opportunity to eat at one. I knew we would be ready for lunch after a morning at a local museum, so I had researched possible venues earlier that morning. I showed my wife a short list and she immediately gravitated to Roly Poly. That would have been my first choice too. This one (the last one remaining in Birmingham, apparently) is in the Homewood neighborhood / area. It is located on a busy street with shops and plazas lining both sides. These look like they were built no later than 1950 but have evolved and been renovated as new tenants cycled through. We did angled parking on the street out front, but there may be better / easier parking on surrounding side streets. The only issue we had was backing out into traffic when we left; it took a few minutes for a gap. You enter and order at the counter. They have menus available there for you to check out. They have a rack of chips available, plus maybe other sides? I didn't look beyond the chips. You then sit down and wait for your order. I guess they have call-ahead too. Seating is along the wall to the right as you enter. There is a long bench the length of the wall with separate 4-person tables spaced along it, with 2 additional chairs each. Our order seemed to take a while, but it may have just been what we ordered (hot sandwich) versus other simpler orders getting filled faster. I got the French Twist, which is my favorite. I only got a regular and not a large, but I think I could have finished a large. My wife got something else, chicken-based I think. We both enjoyed this a lot. If I lived in the area, I'd probably stop in here semi-regularly.
