My mom and I had a hour to kill waiting on an appointment around lunch time in Southside, so we decided to hit up Newks. I was seriously surprised by how large it was on the inside.... so that was a plus. Definitely has the chain or franchise feel, but in the clean, well spaced out kind of way that almost seems familiar. The manager personally opened the door for us as we were arriving and leaving and checked on us twice during the meal... nice touch and those small gestures mean a lot to me. So you walk in and order from the large menu on the wall and typically for lunch I am going to go with some kind of soup and sandwich combo. I ordered the smoked ham and Swiss with the ultimate crab soup and mom had the chicken salad sandwich and broccoli cheese soup. My sandwich was good. The bread was fresh, ham had a great smokey flavor to it and there was a dijon-mayo combo that complimented everything well. As for the ultimate crab soup, while ordering I was informed that it was spicy, like a she crab soup. It had a nice spicy kick, not overwhelming, but that didn't make up for it overall. It wasn't great, just ok... and without question, not "ultimate". I did try mom's broccoli cheese and it stood on it's own.. but again, not the best I've ever had. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but if you are in the area and need a quick lunch in a clean place, check it out. Totally spaced out on the complimentary condiment station since we were in and out... but not real sure if that would have made a huge different in my opinion or not. So I've been wanting to try this spot for a while now and I had a sizable lunch break, so I decided to treat myself with Newk's on friday! I had a pleasant first experience. I was totally lost trying to order off of the express to-go menu when the manager (I think) was nice enough to show me the real menu (haha) and give me some options/suggestions. He was patient and knowlegable. I liked that they had a complimentary station in the middle of the restaurant and plenty of options on the menu! Now down to what I ordered. I got a combo of half sandwich, half soup; I got a turkey breast and avocado with clam and corn chowder. Both were great! I kept seeing everyone elses order of those ginormous salads so I may do that next time. I work nearby so this will soon become a regular spot! Oh! and this year marks their 10th year anniversary, so I got a cute, giant red christmas reusable cup. I thought that was a nice touch. read more

I had been waiting until I actually had a chance to eat in to write the review, however since time continues to fly I will write the review on my take out experiences. The first time i stopped in for a grab and go salad, I was surprised at the multiple offerings. I ciuldnt choose, so I went with the Black and Blue salad. Great choice tender strips of steak over a bed of greens with a mound of blue cheese crumbles,fresh veggies. Delicious. I have been back 3 times since choosing from the grab and go section. The Ultimate salad is the best weekend treat that you can feel good about, even though it borders on excess, but only in a good way. I just discovered you can order online. So the next time i dash in I plan to order online a put a few personal touches...maybe add avocado and egg to the Ultimate...mmmhmm sounds like a plan. I happened to find this place because I wanted an early lunch (they open at 10:30!) You place your order at the counter and receive a number for your table. They offer a huge selection of soups and salads. I enjoyed a half a steak sandwich and half a ceasar salad. The server at the counter was very friendly and helpful when I explained that I have never eaten here before. I would love to come back and try more things! Not all Newk's are created equally and this location is among the best. We stopped in recently for a quick lunch and I was reminded how good Newk's menu items can be. Service was super fast and friendly and the cashier was happy to patiently answer questions as we decided, giving us a great first impression. I like how you order at the counter then take a seat with your number to have lunch brought to your table. Makes the workday lunch service faster. I knew I enjoyed the Newk's Q sandwich in the past with chicken, bacon, cheese, and the white barbecue sauce I love, but this time I tried the Newk's Q pizza. The pizza has to be the best meal I have had at any Newk's. The crust was actually light and fluffy with a perfectly done crispiness. The toppings were generous with the smokey bacon, the tangy white sauce, melty cheese and topped with jalapeno slices for an extra pop of flavor. I haven't stopped thinking about how good this was and I am now inspired to try other pizzas here. It was definitely large enough to share. My guest had the ahi tuna topped salad and really enjoyed this fresh, super sized salad. We also really enjoy how they give you a nice plastic cup for your soft drinks, so you can take a good refill to go back to the office with you after lunch. Again the desserts tempted me and looked amazing, but saving no room after the hearty lunch I have yet to try the sweets. I actually really enjoyed Newks. I ordered the half sandwich and half salad combo. I got the steak sandwich and a Caesar salad, the sandwich was awesome and it would be hard to mess up a salad. Jo got the four cheese mac and cheese and the italian sandwich. Surprisingly, he was full after half the sandwich. Came here with my mom yesterday. I frequent the one at the town center often. It was about 6:30pm on a Sunday, it wasn't busy and the food came quickly. I ordered lobster and crab bisque and Caesar salad with chicken, and she got the tortilla soup (gluten free). Some of my croutons were soft, and others were really burnt, which is why I am only giving 4 stars. I had to look closely as one looked just like a black olive. Other than that the meal was great as usual. Love this place because it's fast, healthy, pretty affordable, and they have something for everyone. When I get to recommend where we have our quarterly office lunches, this is usually #1 or #2 on the list. The food is great, and service is prompt. The prices are a little high, but worth it for a great meal. Parking is a nightmare--especially during peak hours--so we usually go between 11-11:30am when we do lunch. Visiting Jacksonville and had no idea this was a chain/franchise type restaurant. Just read the reviews stating they had good sandwiches and stopped by for lunch. The food is great, the employees are very attentive and it seemed like a very popular joint. You pay and order at the entrance, take a number and you get delivered your food at your table when it's available. This is not my style lunch spot, but I'm giving it 5 stars because of the good selection on the menu and the bbq chix pizza was great.... AND I loved the unique offerings at the condiment station. 3 types of peppers and capers! Thank you! Prices are a tad bit high... just my opinion. I'm a fan because compared to any other place where you can get a salad this one has been the best value for the size. It was Huge, Im sure I could have feed two other full sized adults with one salad. i ordered the Newks Salad and the Newks Bbq half sandwich with mac n cheese. Then I discovered I ordered way too much! they should post a warning but I took it home and gave it to my fiance ... he never would have know i had lunch with friends and brought him the left overs (it was that Much Salad) they have desserts but tend to always forget the dessert tickets because they are too busy chopping up salads and creating the food order. Over all it was really good but we waited to long for slices of cake that was already done. I like this location, especially the carry out service. The manager is always friendly and courteous every time I pick up my order. The sandwiches and the salads are good. My son loves the pizza, actually it's the only pizza he prefers to eat. I really don't have any major complaints but I did notice that it's a hit or miss when it comes to having drink carriers available. Tonight, the young lady stated they didn't have any drink carriers so i ended up doing a balancing act using the pizza box as a tray when leaving the restaurant. In a nutshell I lost one of my drinks while trying to carry my bag and pizza box into my house. No big deal, I guess it was a hint to start drinking more water. read more

Today was my first trip into Newks. We passed by it on Southside Blvd a bunch of times. And boy am we glad we did! I had a Shrimp Romoulade salad...it comes with 12 large shrimp, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, all expertly tossed with just the right amount of dressing. The salad was HUGE! My wife had a "Black and Blue" salad which she loved. They put in a ton of fresh ingredients. It was easily the best salad I have had in a really long time. I really liked the "pepper bar" in the center of the restaurant. They offer freshly grated Parmesan cheese, as well as capers, and roasted garlic. They also have individually wrapped bread sticks. I cannot say enough good things about this place. Sandwiches are super good, salads are HUGE, pizza is yummy, soups are perfection. Very friendly and informative staff, and the management is always visible and helpful. My favorites are: Loaded Potato soup (I could eat this DAILY) Newks Q (as recommended by a staff member) BBQ chicken pizza (another recommendation) Ultimate salad w remoulade dressing (giant chunks of turkey and ham!!) Club sandwich (Yummmmm) The only things I haven't really liked are the crab soup, which was a bit too salty for my taste, or the shrimp po boy...which I just would prefer fried shrimp on a po boy. So many restaurants are closed on Monday, so we decided to try Newk's. The interior is clean, spacious, and offers a view of the kitchen. We ordered a sausage and pepperoni pizza and chicken sandwich. The pizza was good but nothing out of the ordinary. The chicken salad sandwich, however, was amazing. The bread was fresh. I love the food here. The chicken pesto was exactly the way described on the menu. The flavors came together well only issue was the sandwich as a whole was a bit dry. Maybe a bit more pesto? The only thing I don't like is its often hard to find a table at peak times it would be nice if a staff member helped to direct seating at those crazy times. I Tried newks for the first time tonight and it was amazing. I eat a ton of salad usually without any dressing or cheese and I have found my "salad spots" where I get really great ones but today my mind was blown! The newks favorite was fresh and full of flavor. The staff was incredible, even offering me a drink while I waited (which wasn't very long). I ordered online easily. Staff was really friendly, even had a pleasantly conversation with the busser. The food was incredibly delicious, I had the chicken salad sandwich and crawfish soup. Both were amazing. My daughter had the kids meal mac and cheese which was also really good (and makes me feel better about spending $5 on a kids meal-I hate when you order a kids meal and they give you kraft or something you know costs next to nothing). My husband had a turkey sandwich which was also tasty. The restaurant was packed for lunch, and yet the entire restaurant was impeccably clean-including the condiment bar and the bathrooms. Salad size reduced! Yes, I noticed. Three years ago I would have given Newk's five stars, but they have reduced the size of their salads--twice in the past three years. They used To have big red bowls that they filled generously, then they changed to smaller bowls, well filled and now the smaller bowls are not so well filled, making it just an average salad, and definitely not worthy of five stars anymore! read more

We had never heard of this restaurant but decided to try it. We thought how can they go wrong with a salad; but we were so wrong. The first problem was the woman who took our order who did not ask any questions nor did she inform us of things she should have. We both ordered salads called Newk's Favorite which are supposed to have chicken, greens, grapes, pecans, dried cranberries, artichokes, and gorgonzola cheese with a sherry vinigrette dressing. I also ordered a chicken tortilla soup. What we learned very quickly was that this restaurant's staff needs training and the owner needs to be a little more generous. The woman who took our order never mentioned that you can get crackers for your soup, salt, pepper, and breadsticks from a table in the center of the seating area. I wanted crackers for my soup but after having gotten up so many times, I didn't want to ask for anything else. The soup was supposed to have tortilla strips and it only had about 4 tiny strips and barely any chicken. The salad had a total of maybe two grapes that were sliced very thin, only a spec of "gorgonzola", and you could not taste the dressing. The chicken in this salad is frozen cold. I asked the staff to warm the chicken in my salad before they brought it to the table and what I got was shoe leather. We asked for gorgonzola cheese and we got a little cup with some cheese in there but it did not look like gorgonzola which is a crumbly cheese and not one you can grate into strips. I had to request more dressing otherwise I had lettuce w/o dressing. They are too busy cutting corners and how much are they really saving by doing these things? The sweet tea was like dirty water. It barely tasted like tea. It was just water w/a faint taste of tea. The whole experience was so disappointing. As we were leaving we noticed the people behind us were having pizza and it did really look good. Would never recommend a salad from this establishment. Not sure I would go back either. This is my newest favorite place! I just moved here and dropped in to check it out. Fortunately I got there before the onslaught of lunch hour. The line got really long fast. I've eaten there twice now and tried several sandwiches and salads and really enjoyed it. Tasty beverages also. This place is a great alternative to Panera, but has a lot of differences. I think Newk's sandwiches are superior and salads are about the same. Panera has a huge ordering advantage with their kiosks. Newk's is not heavy into the pastry / desserts like Panera which is better for your waistline, however, Newk's has some cake that I am itching to try. I used to use Panera a lot for studying and great wifi. I am not sure Newk's would be an ideal place for that. read more
