Came here to watch a friend's show one night, and obviously to see what all this Reuben hype is all about. Oh man, it did not disappoint! I tried out their "Award Winning" Reuben with turkey pastrami and it was definitely just that. Coming from a super Russian family I've developed a huge fondness for pickled and sour things, i.e., sauerkraut, and lots of it. It definitely satisfied my sour and tangy craving, but the turkey pastrami was by no means masked by the taste, I savored every delicious flavor happening in that sandwich. They're a little on the pricey side, especially since no sides come standard. That being said, the sandwiches are enormous and we definitely couldn't handle eating anything else after wolfing them down. After a couple hours of digesting though we managed to venture back to the front and nab a piece of cheesecake... obviously we had to taste other aspects of NeWorlDeli. I am by no means a restaurant critic and really maintain minimal needs. Unfortunately today I went to New World Deli because I was getting my car worked on. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak sandwich and some house cab. I'm into raw meat for sushi but not on my sandwich. I then sat in the restaurant for an hour (still waiting on my car) listening to the owner (I assume) joyfully greet and speak to the customers one by one at their tables but he never came to mine. I have been complimented by many for my smile and happy appearance so I know I do not have rbf. He sounded so genuine and happy talking about Christmas and would have loved for him to come over just to say hello. Instead he ignored me even when I got up to order more from the restaurant to eat/drink since my sandwich was raw. I sat in line while he spoke with the customer in front of me that he knew and then walked away when he was finished assisting her. I get a Reuben or a toasted sandwich and it's delicious every time. I crave this sandwich. The sandwiches are huge so I don't waste time with soup or any of that other stuff. Salads always look good but again...Reuben is where it is at for me. Maybe get the sauce on the side if you're that type of person. They're always happy to accommodate. It's a neighborhood deli and they have an eclectic music playlist. The huge windows let in lots of light so there is that familiar cozy feeling to this place. Ah, perhaps this is not the best place to get take out from but I did it anyways because they had good reviews so I took the risk. By the time it delivered to me, my New Jersey sloppy joe was legitimately soup. I couldn't eat it with my hands because the bread was so wet and the thousand island sauce was so soaking through, it was nauseating. The fries were ok, the potato salad nothing special. My friend said the cheese on the cheesesteak sandwich was strange and off flavor. The only one redeeming star was the key lime pie. I have driven by New World every day for years and finally stopped by on Sunday afternoon for lunch! There was love music when I stopped by which added to the experience! My mom ordered the Turkey and Gruyere with a cup of Chicken Poblano soup and I had the Ham & Swiss on a French roll. Both were good and we both commented on how good the bread was! A-OK in a good way. And it's less about the quality & happy staff at NeWorlD, and more about me and my baggage. I just get antsy over boutique prices at a sandwich/deli shoppe, and I'll start subconsciously nitpicking over stupid things. It's kind of an attack of "Why am I paying for something I could easily do myself?" This is one of those places that's been around for years, I've driven past them a zillion times, and they've got their own parking lot on Guadalupe. It's fun to see them swing your ticket from the cashier to the kitchen on that high-wire thing, and be prepared for a long line during lunch. Our veggie burger with fries and the eggplant parm sandwich were decent, and probably would have been better if we had checked-in on Yelp first and used the deal. Stuff happens. Apparently dinner is an entirely different affair here, I'm not sure there's wait service, and there appeared to be a bar that was unmanned during lunch. I'm mildly curious to visit their new Uchi/Uchiko-like sibling on Far West. I really don't know what else to tell you about NeWorlDeli - my iced tea was great, it's just this place isn't my cup of tea. You might love it. read more

I have driven by NeWorlDeli about 45 billion times. Finally (finally!) I came in here with a good friend for a quick lunch. The place is actually a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. And I could park in the parking lot instead of down the street which is a total bonus. We couldnt decide as my mouth watered all over the whole menu. Dribble aside, I was able to pick their special: "more than half" delicious curry chicken sandwich and the tomato bisque. The flavor of both were spot on -- enough creaminess in the chicken salad and great flavor without too much basil in the soup. This is simple, delicious fare. It was quick, reasonably priced and they have diet RC cola. Hilarious! They do a great job for a good price and its quick and local. It's hard to find better than that. read more

The staff is amazing, I always chat with the owner like we are old friends ( did eat here once a week for 3 years). I am not sure he remembers me, but he makes me feel like it. New World Deli was the midpoint of a great Sunday group bicycle ride that we dubbed the Reuben Ride. We arrived before they opened and sat outside on the benches chatting and awaiting the opening. The owner saw us outside and came to talk with us and was very nice and offered to let us sit inside. Several of our group did indeed order the Reuben sandwich we had heard so much about. They must have satisfied cause there wasn't much left over. I had the Turkey and Provolone sandwich which was awesome. They all looked as good as they tasted and were obviously made with fresh ingredients and breads. After our meal we lingered a while longer to tell stories and just enjoyed good friends and a beautiful Sunday morning. New World Deli offered a comfortable environment and great sandwiches to make it a great start to the day. So after fueling up it was time to get rolling back North...our first Reuben ride complete. Finally tried this place the other day. I was unaware that most people just get the half sandwich so I looked like an oinker getting the whole sandwich. My lunchmates didn't even finish their half sandwiches, and I ate my whole one. It was just meh, okay - but i ate it all because I was starving. I thought it should have come with a side or something. Maybe I should have gotten something else but it wasn't all that and it wasn't worth $8. But they did have free wifi and a plethora of hot teas which I took full advantage of since I've been kind of under the weather for awhile. And also extremely close to my house. I plan on coming again sometime, but next time I need to get something a bit more impressive than roast beef and swiss on french. I search of the ever elusive soup and sandwich source, we visited the NeWorlDeli on Guadalupe directly across the street from the State Hospital. It is well located and possesses a golden asset, a parking lot next door. The dining room is perfectly Austin quaint, it is staff with very friendly and professional folks. The menu is varied and appropriately priced. The atmosphere was very relaxing and inviting with many customers hanging around and enjoying the free, and very fast wifi. So why 2 stars, the food. My wife's salad was well refrigerated, limp, with that, you know, "been in the frig too long taste" with limpy lettuce, and cucumbers. The chicken posole soup with very little chicken and minimal flavor. My french dip was okay, but the au jus (and I didn't think this was possible with me) was way too salty which completely masked any flavor in the sandwich. OOOooo! This place is good! It's on the drag, north of the drag proper. There's usually enough parking. The deli is in an old-school refinished space -- tin ceiling panels and everything. The way to go is the Sloppy Joe -- a scrumptious pile of meat and cheese double-decker topped with cole slaw. If you want to do it right, get them to grill the sandwich. It is really, really good. I like New World Deli well enough, but it's more of a place that I go because it's near me in Hyde Park and on the way to other places than because it's indispensable. Pluses: nice variety of hot and cold sandwiches, usually big, reasonably priced (but increasing of late). If you stick with the traditional deli fare (reuben, etc.) , you're solidly in four-star territory. The vintage board games are a nice quirk, the soda fountain selection avoids the usual Pepsicoke products, and the staff seem pretty nice. Other things I like less. The soups are so-so (the tomato bisque is pretty ho-hum). The sandwich breads and burger buns are often bagged and pre-sliced affairs, a big downer for me. The salmon burger's curiously regular shape seems to indicate pre-made or boxed origins. To sum, wandering away from the more conventional deli offerings seems like an exercise in diminishing returns. I'll be back, as I'm invariably hungry and in the mood for a nearby sandwich, and you should probably check it out to see if NWD is your style, but a little more thought and love could take the menu to a higher level. read more

It's nice to find an old school deli. I had the French Dip sandwich. It came out on freshly toasted French bread. The melted cheese added that perfect element. The au juice was good, but seemed like it could have packed a better punch of taste. They offer half sandwiches too. read more

I met some friends here for lunch and thought the place was just OK. The meatball sandwich I had was bland and needed more salt and seasoning. The cheese and broccoli soup was equally as bland. Nothing really stood out other than the lack of seasoning/flavor. It's really too bad the food wasn't better since the place is quaint and very comfortable. Not sure why I haven't heard of been to this place until now. It's this rather large deli off of Guadalupe in Hyde Park, and I'm totally a fan. Pretty cozy, but eclectic atmosphere; definitely a good place for lunch during work (they bring out your food pretty quickly) or for taking your time and enjoying your meal. I had an avocado reuben, which made me pretty happy because I love it when places make vegetarian alternatives of popular non-veg dishes. A couple of things that stood out to me: first, the portions are HELLA generous!! My sandwich (I believe sub-$8.50?) was enormous and stuffed! Not only could I not finish it, but I probably can make a second meal out of it! Second, delicious! Great rye bread, tasty and tangy russian dressing, and smooth, creamy avocado all sandwiched with a not-too-in-your-face sauerkraut made me quite the happy diner. I want to try it but I'm afraid I won't like it since it has sauerkraut and I'm not even sure I like to begin with. Their Jewish rye bread is good too. I didn't think I was a huge fan of the flavor at first but it's really not bad. Only sucky thing here is you can't do their half a sandwich and soup with their grilled sandwiches. Had lunch there today, good. Spicy Black bean burger on wheat bun - don't really understand why they call it spicy. It was good. LARGE, you could order it and share with someone. I didn't ask for cheese so that was a bummer, I didn't even think about it. My husband ordered the Hickory Smoked Ham and Swiss on Sourdough. He said it was very dry. Shared order of large fries. They said that small fries was "one handful and large was 2 handfuls". They must have a giant in the back handing out fries because it was HUGE. We could have easily eaten a small order. The large was a heaping basket. (You all know "the basket", it's the plastic oval bowl, solid bottom and grid on side). They were good. Didn't have any salt on them though :( They did not have Coke products in the fountain, but had them available in a can. The fountain drinks were the Pepsi & DP products. Our friends had the Smoked Turkey Gruyere on Rye. She said it was yummy - I was jealous. It looked awesome. Our other friend had a ruben - which is what they are suppose to be famous for. Its big thats for sure. The rye bread was very nice and toasted, held up very well to what is normally wet sauerkraut. Corned beef was plentiful too, as was a nice smear of russian dressing. A pretty decent attempt at a New York/Jewish style deli, but in the end it's still more of a better-than-average diner with a decent bottled beer selection and live music. I really wanted to like NeWorlDeli both because I love New York/Jewish style delis, but also because I'd really like to reward any business that uses a portmanteau for their name. But, it wound up being really just another coffee shop/diner without much more than average sandwiches. I came to see a friend of a friend perform in a bad on a Saturday night and the band was great. The beer selection was good too--even if it was entirely in bottles. (I'm not going to complain about getting a Convict Hill Stout.) It was really the sandwiches that were a letdown. I heard that they had the best reuben in town, so my wife got a turkey reuben, but the turkey and smoked gruyere sounded too good to pass up, so I got that. The turkey reuben was good, but not stellar. I don't know if I should have asked for the turkey pastrami rather than just turkey, but what we got was just turkey and so lacked the distinctive taste of a reuben. The bread was correctly drowned in butter and then pan fried though, so that was good. The turkey and smoked gruyere was more disappointing. They offered me a sourdough french bread for it and I jumped at the offer. What it came out on was indistinguishable from a store-bought hoagie roll. More so, I couldn't taste the gruyere at all. I could see it, but it lacked any of the strong flavors that a good gruyere is supposed to have. Oh well. At $26 for two beers and two big sandwiches, it's not crazy expensive either. I'll probably come back to try the basic reuben with the hope that it'll be what people are raving about. In the meantime though, if you're looking for a sandwich fix, this probably isn't your place and if you're looking for the best reuben in town, I think you should go to Easy Tiger instead. read more

NeWorlDeli has some seriously delicious sandwiches and probably one of the best tomato soups I've had in Austin. After driving past the cafe for several years without visiting, I finally decided to check it out and was pleasantly surprised. As a huge fan of sandwiches, I'm always happy to find a new deli in my stomping grounds. Since it was my first visit, I opted for the "Award Winning" Reuben. They should probably add "gratuitously large" into that name somehow because holy carp is that a lot of food. There was easily an inch-and-a-half of meat (so good) with another half-inch of sauerkraut (excellent). The only thing I would change is the bread which got a little soggy from all the juices. I'm pretty sure if anything else were added to this sandwich it would collapse inwards upon itself and form a black hole. read more
