It's hard to find true Tex Mex food in Chicago (not Mexican, but Tex Mex), and this place hit the notes. We started with the skillet queso with brisket, which was tasty but a lot for only two people! My chicken fajitas were delicious, and my boyfriend had the quesa birri tacos which came with guajillo consomme for dipping. I also had a margarita that packed quite a punch! We tried Next Mex couple of times and unfortunately we won't be going back. My husband ordered shrimp fajitas, the shrimps were so overcooked, the dish was blend, came also with dry unseasoned rice. Another one of these hipster Mexican cantinas that are everywhere. I'm not complaining about it. Next Mex is the go to place for Mexican American in Lemont. Has new takes on old favorites. The prices on a few things are high but there's happy hour and specials too. Came in with the crew to watch a game. It had a drink special going on. They had a margarita made with The Rock's tequila, Teremana. It was $9 for a pretty good pour. This was so good I hit the Rock Bottom of the glass quick. It's made by putting The People's Tequila into a mixer. Then take a lime, get yourself a big one. Shine it up real good. Turn that son of a bitch sideways. Stick it up your candy ass. Then squeeze some juice into the tequila and shake. Food was pretty good but there weren't many vegetarian choices. The best of these is the Salsa Trio. It's $4 for a nice sampler of a few. The salsas are avocado-tomatillo, chile de arbol, and one of the chef's selection. All of these had mild spice and weren't too hot. The chips were crispy and tasty on their own but these of course are even better with these house made salsas. Has lots of good drinks and good Mexican American food. It has mostly good prices. Absolutely love the fact that you can order individual tacos so you can mix and match. I'm a beef guy. Wife likes the pork. (Didn't try the fish) All of the tacos were delicious. Next Mex is modern Mexican. Very cool. Nice patio. Street parking. We arrived and while there were table available, we waited for quite a while to be seated because they ran out of silverware. Staffing issues are all over but this was a new one. No worries though, it was a nice night out and time went quickly. The bartenders were great. Drink recommendations were spot on! They knew the menu and were fun to interact with. The hostess ended up being our server. She was a Jack of all trades and worked hard to make sure things got done. We went for the first time and had a lackluster experience that left us quite irritated. To start, I ordered a bourbon and the waitress came back saying they "accidentally" poured a whiskey to finish the bottle. They asked if it was ok, I said fine as not to cause a fuss. Out of curiosity, I checked the price and the one they poured was also more money. I'm glad I did verify the price because when the check came, they tried to charge me the extra for the whiskey I didn't order. Beyond that, the rice is extremely bland and portions are tiny. $15 for two small enchiladas and some bland rice is shameful. The other dinner we ordered was a $17 chicken dish that hardly had any chicken on it and was laid on a small plate of the bland rice. The server was odd and made some really unnecessary and inappropriate comments about how quickly we ate and how much we ate when she came to get our plates. We're two average sized adults, not that it should matter. All in all, a nauseating dinner experience. We will never go back and will never recommend anyone to. If you want excellent Mexican food in Lemont then go downtown to Moreno's. Our experience there was much better. Friendly staff, good prices and great food. read more

Another solid dining experience at my local Tex-Mex, Next-Mex. I tend to stick with what I know, which is their Chile Rellano and Portobello Fajitas. I will have to eventually branch out, but I get a little hesitant being a vegetarian. Started with their Margarita Mexican Bulldog Style. Never a disappointment, and my eldest son got a kick of how fast the beer would pour itself into the glass! Chile Rellano is delicious, although I do still find myself adding their house salsa to it. My younger daughter appreciated the blandness of the original sauce provided, though, which is good. If there was heat she would not eat! The Portobello Fajitas were slightly on the too oily side this time. I couldn't enjoy the taste and texture when there was oil covering every single veggie. Needless to say it took a while for those leftovers to be consumed. The boys love the Shrimp Tacos and Shrimp Fajitas. Score for them! Rice and refried beans - were just ok Al pastor taco - delicious Chicken tinga taco - also delicious. I liked the shredded lettuce they used on it. Verde chicken enchilada - good but I liked the tacos more I also ordered a side of elotes Which tastes bad at most restaurants I go to. However, Next Mex has awesome elotes!! The corn was charred, good portion of Mayo, chili powder, and cheese. My husband Had the steak burrito. Unfortunately when guacamole in the burrito gets warm it doesn't really taste as good, so he didn't care for it as much. First time here. Right away parking was right in front and super easy. They have a very nice patio with a lot of space. Their wifi was down so there was no music, but it was still a nice ambiance, everyone was nicely spread out. Our server Julian was very informative and funny, made our experience there that much better. I was happy to see a frozen prickly pear margarita because you don't find that flavor in the Midwest that often. It's my favorite flavor to get in Arizona! For appetizers Julian recommended the chicken rollitos, filled with chicken, black beans, corn, etc I would compare them to egg rolls. These rollitos are a must try ...boy are they good. A good portion as well, you get 4 but they are big and filling. We also tried out the bacon wrapped shrimp, comes in an order of 5. They were the perfect size and the bacon was cooked nice and crispy. Moving to entrees, my boyfriend and I split the steak chimichanga with melted cheese on top. Julian was able to give us both a verde sauce as well as a spiced red. I skipped an entree for myself to save room for the fruity pebble fried ice cream... and wow worth it. Oh boy, this really was a let down. Cute outdoor patio space was a positive. Once seated it took 15 minutes to get water/ place drink orders. We ordered the brisket nachos, which were fine, not awful, but didn't seem particularly hot either like they had been sitting on the counter for a bit. Our main course came out for two of the four of us, we waited another 15 minutes to see our waitress to ask where the rest of the food was for our group. I will say that our waitress was friendly, she was clearly stretched too thin, seemed like a staffing issue. The food that came out was mediocre at best. The burrito bowl had a minuscule amount of rice, and was mostly a salad with brisket on top for $14! It was hardly any food of substance for that price. While the grilled fish tacos were fishy tasting, the tortillas did seem fresh and home made. The fried fish tacos seemed like a frozen fish patty that was cooked earlier chopped up onto the tortillas. Just all around not fresh or impressed honestly. Every one of them were delicious with amazing, unique and complex flavor profiles, high quality meat and fresh produce, on tasty homemade corn tortillas. This time we tried the carne asada pizza (marinated steak, grilled onions/peppers and chihuahua cheese..) it was delicious. Better location and this place kills it everyday. Summer 2018 Sat outside for a couple drinks and appetizers. It's very peaceful out on the patio aside from an occasional train which isn't so bad. Server was attentive, although they weren't busy i feel he'd be that way anyway. Immediately we got some chips and a house salsa. This salsa was better than average. As we consumed our beverages we decided on the salsa trio and the pork sopes. The trio of salsa included an avocado tomatillo (delicious), roasted red pepper (decent) and a sweet mango (below average). Chips were crisp and appropriately salted. Quality of food is great, portions are perfect. Can't wait to go back Update!- My family hosted a baby shower for me here Mother's Day weekend and the restaurant was a perfect location! We had 35 women seated comfortably (but room for more people) with room for the taco and salad bar, dessert table and gift table. Service was spot on and food was delicious. Everyone commented on the quality of the tacos and yummy appetizers- guacamole and chicken wontons rolls. Margaritas and house sangria were also a hit! Ideal restaurant for hosting large groups. With booths and larger and smaller tables and also outdoor seating available. Food was good and some unique menu items not seen at most Mexican restaurants The sound levels were reasonable except when the HVAC unit kicked on and the air conditioning was overly loud while running. We tried Next Mex for the first time. We enjoy Next Whisky Bar in Lisle so trying their sister restaurant was a must. We went a Saturday before the dinner rush and opted to sit at the bar. We were quickly greeted by the bartender who we now know is the manager. She was amazing throughout our entire time there. Chips were warm and salsa was good. If you like spice you'll want to ask for it. We also had a small side of the warm queso... YUM!!! My husband and I both ordered tacos. They were all delicious. We ordered the Steak Nachos, Chicken Tinga Tacos, Al Pastor Tacos, and a Steak Burrito. I ordered via phone and prepaid including a tip with my credit card so I didn't have to handle cash. The order was ready by the time I arrived and all I can say was that the food was well prepared, well presented, warm, and very very tasty. Had a quick lunch at Next Mex this week, and I would come back. The menu is good and includes a number of lunch specials, at very reasonable prices. I enjoyed the taco salad with chicken, that had a rojo sauce as a dressing along with guacamole, which was tasty. Only issue was that I had two whole bay leaves in the salad mix somehow.
