Tom, the business owner, offered me $5600 to complete a 100 linear foot fence with a cheaper design…read morethan I had requested at the first site inspection for a quote. When I requested that instead of 4"x4" posts we use 4"x6" posts, he told me that since the size difference was so "out of the ordinary" it would cost an extra 50-70% on the whole job, making it a minimum of $8400 just for that small change to a more sturdy post. He also said that he would be "happy to do the job" the way I wanted the fence, and not the cheap way that he wanted to for $5600, for $10,000. Of course you will be happy to do a job that gives you 3 times the market value for the work, Tom. That didn't happen this time, and don't let him swindle you either. Tom will take you for a fool if he can. The price of the materials was around $2000, including brand new tools. Do your own cost itemization because shady business owners like Tom will do it for you and wildly inflate the numbers if he even bothers to itemize the cost of materials and labor at all. Most contractors choose not to because then they can't justify the insane markups they like to tack on to the price of the job. UPDATE: Tom responded, and so I will respond to his nonsense. I never said that Tom included the price of brand new tools in his quote. I said that I did the market research myself (pretty easy, just walk into Home Depot and tally the costs), and found that all of the materials including brand new tools amounted to around $2,000. Tom does not itemize his quotes and when I asked him about the inflated prices for the 4"x6" Pressure Treated Posts via email he basically shrugged it off and said "if you think my prices are too high, then go with a competitor". I did just that and sent him a scan of the written quote from his competitor Reuben Borg Fences that quoted me around $4500 and built the fence mostly as I asked them to. Tom responded with a snarky "thank you for enlightening me." NOTICE how nothing in Tom's response dealt with the issue of him artificially inflating his price up to $8400 from $5600 just for a change in the size of fence posts from 4"x4" to 4"x6". Don't do business with Tom.

It took me months to find providers that would install an aluminum fence and even longer to find one that would install a fence we actually liked. Susan came out, gave a prompt quote and also quoted on a smaller job for us. The price wasn't cheap - I was definitely used to the pricing on wood fences - but was in the range I expected. It took about 6wks because of the lead time on getting the materials, but installation was quick, and they knocked out 2 fences with gates and 1 extra gate on a barbed wire fence as well. They were pleasure to deal with, extremely professional and the fence looks great. When I had a couple minor fixes, they came back out promptly, made the fixes without hesitation, and I've had 0 issues with the fences/gates since installation. By the time the warm weather came around, our hardy weeds would wear down to a brown dust on top of packed clay soil. We might have tried parking cars on the hard pack. It was a hot dusty mess. When the rain came, one day of rain could turn the hard pack into a morass of sticky gooey mud which was hard to clean off the feet, and hard to clean off the dog. Our backyard was unusable about 3/4 of the year. Finally, we had a couple of slopes in the backyard that were a challenge to know what to do with...it was not an easy place, full of work. The best thing (among many) is that Steve is knowledgeable about plants, how they respond to the weather, and where they will grow. He is also willing to work with you, listen to you, incorporate your ideas, convictions, wishes and desires for the planning of your landscape. I do believe Steve was tired of seeing our number on his caller ID when we called, but he always got back to us, answered our questions and made adjustments as he went. We were definitely heard in our wishes. LIving Earth Gardens handled our soil construction (where they turned it from clingy, muddy cement to soil that would grow stuff) They cleared brush, the planted trees, fruit trees, and put in a drip system to help us water it all. From start to finish they had the tools and know how. They also put in some stairs to make the slope navigable. You will find the whole staff energetic, positive and conscientious. We are pleased with our yard and the effort that was made to get us there.
